Specific heat and effects of pairing fluctuations in the BCS-BEC crossover regime of an ultracold Fermi gas

We investigate the specific heat at constant volume $C_V$ in the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer)-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover regime of an ultracold Fermi gas above the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. Within the framework of the strong-coupling theory developed by Nozières and Schmitt-Rink, we show that this thermodynamic quantity is sensitive to the stability of preformed Cooper pairs. That is, while $C_V(T\gesim T_{\rm c})$ in the unitary regime is remarkably enhanced by {\it metastable} preformed Cooper pairs or pairing fluctuations, it is well described by that of an ideal Bose gas of long-lived {\it stable} molecules in the strong-coupling BEC regime. Using these results, we identify the region where the system may be viewed as an almost ideal Bose gas of stable pairs, as well as the pseudogap regime where the system is dominated by metastable preformed Cooper pairs, in the phase diagram of an ultracold Fermi gas with respect to the strength of a pairing interaction and the temperature. We also show that the calculated specific heat agrees with the recent experiment on a $^6$Li unitary Fermi gas. Since the formation of preformed Cooper pairs is a crucial key in the BCS-BEC crossover phenomenon, our results would be helpful in considering how fluctuating preformed Cooper pairs appear in a Fermi gas, to eventually become stable, as one passes through the BCS-BEC crossover region.

Spin susceptibility and effects of inhomogeneous strong pairing fluctuations in a trapped ultracold Fermi gas

We theoretically investigate magnetic properties of a unitary Fermi gas in a harmonic trap. Including strong pairing fluctuations within the framework of an extended $T$-matrix approximation (ETMA), as well as effects of a trap potential within the local density approximation (LDA), we calculate the local spin susceptibility $χ(T,r)$ above the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. We show that the formation of preformed singlet Cooper pairs anomalously suppresses $χ(T,r)$ in the trap center near $T_{\rm c}$. We also point out that, in the unitarity limit, the spin-gap temperature in a uniform Fermi gas can be evaluated from the observation of the spatial variation of $χ(T,r)$. Since a real ultracold Fermi gas is always in a trap potential, our results would be useful for the study of how this spatial inhomogeneity affects thermodynamic properties of an ultracold Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover region.

Spin Relaxation Mechanism in a Highly Doped Organic Polymer Film

We report the systematic studies of spin current transport and relaxation mechanism in highly doped organic polymer film. In this study, we have determined spin diffusion length (SDL), spin lifetime, and spin diffusion constant by using different experimental techniques. The spin lifetime estimated from the electron paramagnetic resonance experiment is much shorter than the previous expectation beyond the experimental ambiguity. This suggests that significantly large spin diffusion constant, which is reasonably explained by the hopping transport mechanism in degenerate semiconductors, exists in highly doped organic semiconductors. The calculated SDL using the spin lifetime and spin diffusion constant estimated from our experiment is comparable to the experimentally obtained SDL of the order of one hundred nanometers. Moreover, the present study revealed that the spin angular momentum is almost preserved in the hopping events. In other words, the spin relaxation mainly occurs due to the spin-orbit coupling at the nanoscale crystalline grains.

Spin Susceptibility and Strong Coupling Effects in an Ultracold Fermi Gas

We investigate magnetic properties and strong coupling corrections in the BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer)-BEC (Bose-Einstein condensation) crossover regime of an ultracold Fermi gas. Within the framework of an extended $T$-matrix theory, we calculate the spin susceptibility $χ$ above the superfluid phase transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. In the crossover region, the formation of preformed Cooper pairs is shown to cause a non-monotonic temperature dependence of $χ$, which is similar to the so-called spin-gap phenomenon observed in the under-doped regime of high-$T_{c}$ cuprates. From this behavior of $χ$, we determine the spin-gap temperature as the temperature at which $χ$ takes a maximum value, in the BCS-BEC crossover region. Since the spin susceptibility is sensitive to the formation of singlet Cooper pairs, our results would be useful in considering the temperature region where pairing fluctuations are important in the BCS-BEC crossover regime of an ultracold Fermi gas.

Mechanism of enhanced optical second-harmonic generation in the conducting pyrochlore-type Pb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7-x}$ oxide compound

The structural, electronic, and optical properties of pyrochlore-type Pb$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{6}$O'$_{0.55}$, which is a metal without spatial inversion symmetry at room temperature, were investigated. Structural analysis revealed that the structural distortion relevant to the breakdown of the inversion symmetry is dominated by the Pb-O' network but is very small in the Ir-O network. At the same time, gigantic second-harmonic generation signals were observed, which can only occur if the local environment of the Ir 5$d$ electrons features broken inversion symmetry. First-principles electronic structure calculations reveal that the underlying mechanism for this phenomenon is the induction of the noncentrosymmetricity in the Ir 5$d$ bands by the strong hybridization with O' 2$p$ orbitals. Our results stimulate theoretical study of inversion-broken iridates, where exotic quantum states such as a topological insulator and Dirac semimetal are anticipated.

Observation of Phonon-Assisted Magnon Absorption in Spin-Orbit Coupling Induced Mott Insulator Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$

The infrared transmission measurement was performed for a two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling induced Mott insulator Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ with a layered-perovskite structure. A phonon-assisted magnon mode was observed at around 1870 cm$^{-1}$ in the absorption spectrum below 180 K. The nearest-neighbor superexchange interaction $J$ was estimated to be 57 meV, which is about a half of the $J$ value of a copper oxide La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$. Our results indicate the possibility that nontrivial properties such as superconductivity are realized at rather high temperature in iridium oxides.

Indirect Optical Absorption of Single Crystalline beta-FeSi2

We investigated optical absorption spectra near the fundamental absorption edge of beta-FeSi2 single crystals by transmission measurements. The phonon structure corresponding to the emission and absorption component was clearly observed in the low-temperature absorption spectra. Assuming exciton state in the indirect allowed transition, we determined a phonon energy of 0.031 +- 0.004 eV. A value of 0.814 eV was obtained for the exciton transition energy at 4K.
