Large-Theta(13) Perturbation Theory of Neutrino Oscillation for Long-Baseline Experiments

The Cervera et al. formula, the best known approximate formula of neutrino oscillation probability for long-baseline experiments, can be regarded as a second-order perturbative formula with small expansion parameter epsilon \equiv Delta m^2_{21} / Delta m^2_{31} \simeq 0.03 under the assumption s_{13} \simeq epsilon. If theta_{13} is large, as suggested by a candidate nu_{e} event at T2K as well as the recent global analyses, higher order corrections of s_{13} to the formula would be needed for better accuracy. We compute the corrections systematically by formulating a perturbative framework by taking theta_{13} as s_{13} \sim \sqrt{epsilon} \simeq 0.18, which guarantees its validity in a wide range of theta_{13} below the Chooz limit. We show on general ground that the correction terms must be of order epsilon^2. Yet, they nicely fill the mismatch between the approximate and the exact formulas at low energies and relatively long baselines. General theorems are derived which serve for better understanding of delta-dependence of the oscillation probability. Some interesting implications of the large theta_{13} hypothesis are discussed.

Parameter Degeneracy in Neutrino Oscillation -- Solution Network and Structural Overview --

It is known that there is a phenomenon called "parameter degeneracy" in neutrino oscillation measurement of lepton mixing parameters; A set of the oscillation probabilities, e.g., P(nu_mu --> nu_e) and its CP-conjugate P(bar{nu}_mu --> bar{nu}_e) at a particular neutrino energy does not determine uniquely the values of theta_13 and delta. With use of the approximate form of the oscillation probability 'a la Cervera et al., a complete analysis of the eightfold parameter degeneracy is presented. We propose a unified view of the various types of the degeneracy as invariance of the oscillation probabilities under discrete mappings of the mixing parameters. Explicit form of the mapping is obtained either by symmetry argument, or by deriving exact analytic expressions of all the degeneracy solutions for a given true solution. Due to the one-to-one mapping structure the degeneracy solutions are shown to form a network. We extend our analysis into the parameter degeneracy in T- and CPT-conjugate measurement as well as to the setup with the golden and the silver channels, P(nu_e --> nu_mu) and P(nu_e --> nu_tau). Some characteristic features of the degeneracy solutions in CP-conjugate measurement, in particular their energy dependences, are illuminated by utilizing the explicit analytic solutions.

Large-Theta(13) Perturbation Theory of Neutrino Oscillation

Keeping in mind the possibility of large theta(13), which will be soon explored by reactor and accelerator experiments, I formulate a perturbation theory of neutrino oscillation under the ansatz, sin^2(theta_{13}) \simeq Delta m^2_{21}/Δm^2_{31} \simeq 0.03, which is comparable to the Chooz limit. Under the framework, I derive the perturbative formula of the nu_{e} appearance probability valid to order ε^2 in which effects of arbitrary matter density profile is taken into account. I use the formula to analyze problem of possible obstruction to detecting lepton CP violation by effects of asymmetry in matter density profile. Though the asymmetry could be large for neutrino trajectories which traverse both continental and sea crust, its effect on obscuring CP violation measurement is found to be quite small.

Neutrino's Non-Standard Interactions; Another Eel under a Willow?

I report some progress that occurred since NO-VE08 in the field of non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos. After briefly reviewing theoretical developments, I give a summary of the two works in which I was involved. Firstly, we have formulated a perturbative framework to illuminate the global features of neutrino oscillations with NSI, aiming at exploring method for determination of the standard mixing and the NSI parameters. We have recognized that the parameter degeneracy prevails with an extended form which involves the NSI elements. Furthermore, a completely new type of degeneracy is shown to exist. The nature of the former degeneracy is analyzed in detail in the second work. The work is primarily devoted to analyze the problem of discriminating the two CP violation, one due to the lepton Kobayashi-Maskawa phase and the other by phases of the NSI elements. We have shown that the near (3000 km)-far (7000 km) two detector setting in neutrino factory does have the discrimination capability and is sensitivities to CP violation due to NSI to |epsilon_{eμ}| to \simeq several x 10^{-4} in most of the region of δand ϕ.

Perturbation Theory of Neutrino Oscillation with Nonstandard Neutrino Interactions

We discuss various physics aspects of neutrino oscillation with non-standard interactions (NSI). We formulate a perturbative framework by taking Δm^2_{21} / Δm^2_{31}, s_{13}, and the NSI elements ε_{αβ} (α, β= e, μ, τ) as small expansion parameters of the same order ε. Within the εperturbation theory we obtain the S matrix elements and the neutrino oscillation probability formula to second order (third order in ν_e related channels) in ε. The formula allows us to estimate size of the contribution of any particular NSI element ε_{αbeta} to the oscillation probability in arbitrary channels, and gives a global bird-eye view of the neutrino oscillation phenomena with NSI. Based on the second-order formula we discuss how all the conventional lepton mixing as well as NSI parameters can be determined. Our results shows that while θ_{13}, δ, and the NSI elements in ν_e sector can in principle be determined, complete measurement of the NSI parameters in the ν_μ- ν_τsector is not possible by the rate only analysis. The discussion for parameter determination and the analysis based on the matter perturbation theory indicate that the parameter degeneracy prevails with the NSI parameters. In addition, a new solar-atmospheric variable exchange degeneracy is found. Some general properties of neutrino oscillation with and without NSI are also illuminated.

Determination of the Neutrino Mass Hierarchy via the Phase of the Disappearance Oscillation Probability with a Monochromatic \barν_e Source

The neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined, in principle, by measuring a phase in the disappearance oscillation probability in vacuum, without relying on the matter effect, using a single channel. This phase is not the same for the normal and inverted neutrino mass spectra. In this paper, we give a complete description and physics understanding of the method. The key feature of the method is to detect advancement (normal) or retardation (inverted) of the phase of the atmospheric-scale oscillation relative to the solar-scale oscillation. We then show that this method can be realized with the recently proposed resonant $\barν_{e}$ absorption reaction enhanced by Mössbauer effect. The unique feature of this setup is the ultra-monochromaticity of the observed \barν_{e}'s. Because of this feature the phase advancement or retardation of atmospheric-scale neutrino oscillation is detectable after 20 or more oscillations if the source and the target are made sufficiently compact in size. A quantitative estimate of the sensitivity to mass hierarchy resolution is given. We have also examined how a possible continuation of such experiment can be carried out in order also to achieve high precision (few %) determination of the solar-scale oscillation parameters Δm^2_{21} and θ_{12}.

Probing Non-Standard Neutrino Physics at Neutrino Factory and T2KK

We discuss ways to explore non-standard interactions (NSI) which neutrinos may possess by expressing them as effective four Fermi operators with coefficient of the order of (M_{W} / M_{NP})^2 ~0.01 (0.0001) for energy scales of new physics as M_{NP} ~1 (10) TeV. Neutrino Factory is a prime candidate for such apparatus that can reach to the extreme precision. I describe a two detector setting, one at baseline L~3000 km and the other at L~7000 km, which is able to solve the notorious theta_{13}-NSI confusion, and possibly also the two-phase confusion. The resultant sensitivities to off-diagonal NSI elements ε's are excellent, |ε_{e tau}| \simeq a few \times10^{-3} and |ε_{e mu}| \simeq a few \times10^{-4}. Our results suggest a new picture of neutrino factory as a hunting machine for NSI while keeping its potential of precision measurement of lepton mixing parameters. Sensitivities to NSI by T2KK and the related settings are also discussed.

Non-Standard Neutrino Physics Probed by Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea Two-Detector Complex

The discovery potentials of non-standard physics (NSP) which might be possessed by neutrinos are examined by taking a concrete setting of Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea (T2KK) two detector complex which receives neutrino superbeam from J-PARC. We restrict ourselves into ν_μ and \barν_μ disappearance measurement. We describe here only the non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos with matter and the quantum decoherence. It is shown in some favorable cases T2KK can significantly improve the current bounds on NSP. For NSI, for example, epsilon_{μτ} < 0.03, which is a factor 5 severer than the current one.

Looking for Leptonic CP Violation with Neutrinos

I discuss some theoretical aspects of how to observe leptonic CP violation. It is divided into two parts, one for CP violation due to Majorana, and the other more conventional leptonic Kobayashi-Maskawa (KM) phases. In the first part, I estimate the effect of Majorana phase to observable of neutrinoless double beta decay experiments by paying a careful attention to the definition of the atmospheric scale Delta m^2. In the second part, I discuss Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea two detector complex which receives neutrino superbeam from J-PARC as a concrete setting for discovering CP violation due to the KM phase, as well as resolving mass hierarchy and the theta_{23} octant degeneracy. A cautionary remark is also given on comparison between various projects aiming at exploring CP violation and the mass hierarchy.

Probing Nonstandard Neutrino Physics by Two Identical Detectors with Different Baselines

The Kamioka-Korea two detector system is a powerful experimental setup for resolving neutrino parameter degeneracies and probing CP violation in neutrino oscillation. In this paper, we study sensitivities of this same setup to several nonstandard neutrino physics such as quantum decoherence, tiny violation of Lorentz symmetry, and nonstandard interactions of neutrinos with matter. In most cases, the Kamioka-Korea two-detector setup is more sensitive than the one-detector setup, except for the Lorentz symmetry violation with CPT violation, and the nonstandard neutrino interactions with matter. It can achieve significant improvement on the current bounds on nonstandard neutrino physics.

Long Baseline Neutrino Experiments with Two-Detector Setup

I discuss why and how powerful is the two-detector setting in neutrino oscillation experiments. I cover three concrete examples: (1) reactor θ_{13} experiments, (2) T2KK, Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea two-detector complex for measuring CP violation, determining the neutrino mass hierarchy, and resolving the eight-fold parameter degeneracy, (3) two-detector setting in a neutrino factory at baselines 3000 km and 7000 km for detecting effects of non-standard interactions (NSI) of neutrinos.

Measuring Earth Matter Density and Testing the MSW Theory

In this talk I have raised the question of how the future discovery of leptonic CP violation can be made robust even at accepting the rather large current experimental uncertainties in our knowledges of neutrino propagation in matter. To make progress toward answering the difficult question, I listed ways to proceed: (1) Obtain tighter constraints on the MSW theory by testing it by various neutrino experiments. (2) Measure the matter effect in situ, namely within the experiment for discovering CP violation itself. (3) Uncover leptonic CP violation in a matter effect free environment. I also reported a step made toward the above point (2) by taking neutrino factory as a concrete setting; An accurate in situ measurement of the matter effect looks promising.

On in situ Determination of Earth Matter Density in Neutrino Factory

We point out that an accurate in situ determination of the earth matter density ρis possible in neutrino factory by placing a detector at the magic baseline, L = \sqrt{2} π/ G_{F} N_{e} where N_{e} denotes electron number density. The accuracy of matter density determination is excellent in a region of relatively large theta_{13} with fractional uncertainty δρ/ ρof about 0.43%, 1.3%, and \lsim 3% at 1 sigma CL at sin^2 2theta_{13}=0.1, 10^{-2}, and 3 x 10^{-3}, respectively. At smaller theta_{13} the uncertainty depends upon the CP phase delta, but it remains small, 3%-7% in more than 3/4 of the entire region of delta at sin^2 2theta_{13} = 10^{-4}. The results would allow us to solve the problem of obscured CP violation due to the uncertainty of earth matter density in a wide range of theta_{13} and delta. It may provide a test for the geophysical model of the earth, or it may serve as a method for stringent test of the MSW theory of neutrino propagation in matter once an accurate geophysical estimation of the matter density is available.

Neutrinos; Opportunities and Strategies in the Future

I try to give an overview of future prospects of the experimental exploration of the unknowns in the neutrino mass pattern and the lepton flavor mixing. Because of the nature of the lectures on which this manuscript is based, I give some pedagogical discussions to prepare for the presentation in the later part. I start from measuring θ_{13} by reactors and accelerators as a prerequisite for proceeding to search for leptonic CP violation. I then discuss how CP violation can be uncovered, and how the neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined. I do these by resolving so called the ``parameter degeneracy'' which is necessary anyway if one wants to seek precision measurement of the lepton mixing parameters. As a concrete setting for resolving the degeneracy I introduce the Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea two detector complex which receives neutrino superbeam from J-PARC, sometimes dubbed as ``T2KK''. It is shown that T2KK is able to resolve all the eight-fold parameter degeneracy in a wide range of the lepton mixing parameters. I also discuss an alternative way for lifting the θ_{23} octant degeneracy by reactor-accelerator combined method. Finally, I discuss by taking some examples how some theoretically or phenomenologically motivated ideas can be tested experimentally.

Neutrino Physics around MeV Energies

We present a brief informative overview of a broad ranges of subjects, the solar, the reactor, the geo and the supernova neutrinos (but without excluding possible biases), the topics which consist of the session ``Neutrino Physics around MeV Energies'' in NOW2006. Contrary to the naive expectation, the field is found to be very active in improving the performance of existing detectors, and in preparation for the development coming in the near future. The former includes excellent performance of SNO 3He detector, successful reconstruction of SK III, and KamLAND's new ``4pi'' calibration. The next data release from these experiments will be very exciting. The latter includes effort for lowering threshold in SK III, KamLAND's purification by which geo-neutrino observation becomes much cleaner, and the forthcoming 7Be neutrino measurement by BOREXINO and KamLAND. Possible detection of relic supernova neutrinos and non-zero effect of theta_{13} would bring us great excitement. Furthermore, improved new measurement of heavy element abundance in the solar atmosphere resulted in a solar model with much lower CNO νflux and with disagreement with helioseismology, thereby bringing us a new solar puzzle.

Resolving Eight-Fold Neutrino Parameter Degeneracy by Two Identical Detectors with Different Baselines

We have shown in a previous paper that two identical detectors with each fiducial mass of 0.27 megaton water, one in Kamioka and the other in Korea, which receive the (anti-) muon neutrino beam of 4 MW power from J-PARC facility have potential of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy and discovering CP violation by resolving the degeneracies associated with them. In this paper, we point out that the same setting has capability of resolving the θ_{23} octant degeneracy in region where sin^2 2θ_{23} \lsim 0.97 at 2 standard deviation confidence level even for very small values of θ_{13}. Altogether, it is demonstrated that one can solve all the eight-fold neutrino parameter degeneracies in situ by using the Tokai-to-Kamioka-Korea setting if θ_{13} is within reach by the next generation superbeam experiments. We also prove the property called ``decoupling between the degeneracies'', which is valid to first order in perturbation theory of the earth matter effect, that guarantees approximate independence between analyses to solve any one of the three different type of degeneracies.

Recoilless Resonant Absorption of Monochromatic Neutrino Beam for Measuring Delta m^2_{31} and theta_{13}

We discuss, in the context of precision measurement of Delta m^2_{31} and theta_{13}, physics capabilities enabled by the recoilless resonant absorption of monochromatic antineutrino beam enhanced by the Mössbauer effect recently proposed by Raghavan. Under the assumption of small relative systematic error of a few tenth of percent level between measurement at different detector locations, we give analytical and numerical estimates of the sensitivities to Delta m^2_{31} and sin^2 2theta_{13}. The accuracies of determination of them are enormous; The fractional uncertainty in Delta m^2_{31} achievable by 10 point measurement is 0.6% (2.4%) for sin^2 2theta_{13} = 0.05, and the uncertainty of sin^2 2theta_{13} is 0.002 (0.008) both at 1 sigma CL with the optimistic (pessimistic) assumption of systematic error of 0.2% (1%). The former opens a new possibility of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy by comparing the measured value of Delta m^2_{31} with the one by accelerator experiments, while the latter will help resolving the theta_{23} octant degeneracy.
