Quantitative test of the time dependent Gintzburg-Landau equation for sheared granular flow in two dimension

We examine the validity of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation of granular fluids for a plane shear flow under the Lees-Edwards boundary condition derived from a weakly nonlinear analysis through the comparison with the result of discrete element method. We verify quantitative agreements in the time evolutions of the area fraction and the velocity fields, and also find qualitative agreement in the granular temperature.

Simulation of pattern dynamics of cohesive granular particles under a plane shear

We have performed three-dimensional molecular dynamics simulation of cohesive granular particles under a plane shear. From the simulation, we found the existence of three distinct phases in steady states: (I) a uniform shear phase, (II) a coexistent phase of a shear band and a gas region and (III) a crystal phase. We also found that the critical line between (II) and (III) is approximately represented by $ζ\propto \exp(β\dotγL_y)$, where $ζ$, $β$, $\dotγ$, $L_y$ are the dissipation rate, an unimportant constant, the shear rate and the system size of the velocity gradient direction, respectively.

Pattern dynamics of cohesive granular particles under a plane shear

We perform three dimensional molecular dynamics simulations of cohesive granular particles under a plane shear. From the simulations, we found that the granular temperature of the system abruptly decreases to zero after reaching the critical temperature, where the characteristic time $t_{\rm cl}$ is approximately represented by $t_{\rm cl} \propto (ζ-ζ_{\rm cr})^{-β}$ with the dissipation rate $ζ$, the critical dissipation rate $ζ_{\rm cr}$ and the exponent $β\simeq 0.8$. We also found that there exist a variety types of clusters depending on the initial density and the dissipation rate.

Origin of rebounds with a restitution coefficient larger than unity in nanocluster collisions

We numerically investigate the mechanism of super rebounds for head-on collisions between nanoclusters in which the restitution coefficient is larger than unity. It is confirmed that the temperature and the entropy of the nanocluters decrease after the super rebounds by our molecular dynamics simulations. It is also found that the initial metastable structure plays a key role for the emergence of the super rebounds.

Steplike electric conduction in a classical two-dimensional electron system through a narrow constriction in a microchannel

Using molecular dynamics simulation, we investigate transport properties of a classical two-dimensional electron system confined in a microchannel with a narrow constriction. As a function of the confinement strength of the constriction, the calculated conductance in the simulations exhibits steplike increases as reported in a recent experiment [D. G. Rees et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 026803 (2011)]. It is confirmed that the number of the steps corresponds to the number of stream lines of electrons through the constriction. We verify that density fluctuation plays a major role in smoothing the steps in the conductance.

Simulation of granular jet: Is granular flow really a "perfect fluid?"

We perform three-dimensional simulations of a granular jet impact for both frictional and frictionless grains. Small shear stress observed in the experiment[X. Cheng et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 188001 (2007) ] is reproduced through our simulation. However, the fluid state after the impact is far from a perfect fluid, and thus, similarity between granular jets and quark gluon plasma is superficial, because the observed viscosity is finite and its value is consistent with the prediction of the kinetic theory.

Critical scaling of jammed system after quench of temperature

Critical behavior of soft repulsive particles after quench of temperature near the jamming trasition is numerically investigated. It is found that the plateau of the mean square displacement of tracer particles and the pressure satisfy critical scaling laws. The critical density for the jamming transition depends on the protocol to prepare the system, while the values of the critical exponents which are consistent with the prediction of a phenomenology are independent of the protocol.

Time Dependent Ginzburg-Landau Equation for Sheared Granular Flow

The time dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation for a two-dimensional granular shear flow is numerically solved, where we study both the transient dynamics and the steady state of the order parameter. The structural changes of the numerical solutions are qualitatively similar to the shear bands observed in the discrete element method (DEM) simulation of the two-dimensional granular shear flow.

Instabilities and turbulence-like dynamics in an oppositely driven binary particle mixture

Using extensive particle-based simulations, we investigate out-of-equilibrium pattern dynamics in an oppositely driven binary particle system in two dimensions. A surprisingly rich dynamical behavior including lane formation, jamming, oscillation and turbulence-like dynamics is found. The ratio of two friction coefficients is a key parameter governing the stability of lane formation. When the friction coefficient transverse to the external force direction is sufficiently small compared to the longitudinal one, the lane structure becomes unstable to shear-induced disturbances, and the system eventually exhibits a dynamical transition into a novel turbulence-like phase characterized by random convective flows. We numerically construct an out-of-equilibrium phase diagram. Statistical analysis of complex spatio-temporal dynamics of the fully nonlinear turbulence-like phase suggests its apparent reminiscence to the swarming dynamics in certain active matter systems.

Rheology of sheared granular particles near jamming transition

We investigate the rheology of sheared granular materials near the jamming transition point. We numerically determine the values of the critical fraction and the exponents for the jamming transition using a finite size scaling and the nonlinear minimization method known as the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The exponents are close to our previous theoretical prediction, but there is a small discrepancy, if the critical point is independently determined.

Stochastic Energetics for Non-Gaussian Processes

By introducing a new stochastic integral, we investigate the energetics of classical stochastic systems driven by non-Gaussian white noises. In particular, we introduce a decomposition of the total-energy difference into the work and the heat for each trajectory, and derive a formula to calculate the heat from experimental data on the dynamics. We apply our formulation and results to a Langevin system driven by a Poisson noise.

Phase transition in peristaltic transport of frictionless granular particles

Flow of dissipative particles driven by peristaltic motion of a tube is numerically studied. A transition from slow unjammed flow to fast jammed flow is found through the observation of the mass flux if the minimum width of the peristaltic tube is smaller than a critical value. It is also found that average and fluctuation of the transition time, and the peak value of the second moment of the mass flux exhibit power-law divergences at the critical point and these variables satisfy scaling relationships near the critical point. Dependences of the critical width and exponents on peristaltic velocity and on density are also discussed.

Geometrical Expression of Excess Entropy Production

We derive a geometrical expression of the excess entropy production for quasi-static transitions between nonequilibrium steady states of Markovian jump processes, which can be exactly applied to nonlinear and nonequilibrium situations. The obtained expression is geometrical; the excess entropy production depends only on a trajectory in the parameter space, analogous to the Berry phase in quantum mechanics. Our results imply that vector potentials are needed to construct thermodynamics of nonequilibrium steady states.

Weakly nonlinear analysis of two dimensional sheared granular flow

Weakly nonlinear analysis of a two dimensional sheared granular flow is carried out under the Lees-Edwards boundary condition. We derive the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation of a disturbance amplitude starting from a set of granular hydrodynamic equations and discuss the bifurcation of the steady amplitude in the hydrodynamic limit.

Critical scaling near jamming transition for frictional granular particles

The critical rheology of sheared frictional granular materials near jamming transition is numer- ically investigated. It is confirmed that there exist a true critical density which characterizes the onset of the yield stress, and two fictitious critical densities which characterize the scaling laws of rheological properties. We find the existence of a hysteresis loop between two of the critical densities for each friction coefficient. It is noteworthy that the critical scaling law for frictionless jamming transition seems to be still valid even for frictional jamming despite using fictitious critical density values.

Negative normal restitution coefficient for nanocluster collisions

The oblique impacts of nanoclusters is studied by means of Molecular Dynamics and theoretically. In simulations we explore two models -- Lennard-Jones clusters and particles with covalently bonded atoms. In contrast to the case of macroscopic bodies, the standard definition of the normal restitution coefficient yields for this coefficient negative values for oblique collisions of nanoclusters. We explain this effect and propose a proper definition of the restitution coefficient which is always positive. We develop a theory of an oblique impact based on continuum model of particles. A surprisingly good agreement between the macroscopic theory and simulations leads to the conclusion, that macroscopic concepts of elasticity, bulk viscosity and surface tension remain valid for nanoparticles of a few hundreds atoms.

Behavior of pressure and viscosity at high densities for two-dimensional hard and soft granular materials

The pressure and the viscosity in two-dimensional sheared granular assemblies are investigated numerically. The behavior of both pressure and viscosity is smoothly changing qualitatively when starting from a mono-disperse hard-disk system without dissipation and moving towards a system of (i) poly-disperse, (ii) soft particles with (iii) considerable dissipation. In the rigid, elastic limit of mono-disperse systems, the viscosity is approximately inverse proportional to the area fraction difference from $ϕ_η \simeq 0.7$, but the pressure is still finite at $ϕ_η$. In moderately soft, dissipative and poly-disperse systems, on the other hand, we confirm the recent theoretical prediction that both scaled pressure (divided by the kinetic temperature $T$) and scaled viscosity (divided by $\sqrt{T}$) diverge at the same density, i.e., the jamming transition point $ϕ_J > ϕ_η$, with the exponents -2 and -3, respectively. Furthermore, we observe that the critical region of the jamming transition becomes invisible as the restitution coefficient approaches unity, i.e. for vanishing dissipation. In order to understand the conflict between these two different predictions on the divergence of the pressure and the viscosity, the transition from soft to hard particles is studied in detail and the dimensionless control parameters are defined as ratios of various time-scales. We introduce a dimensionless number, i.e. the ratio of dissipation rate and shear rate, that can identify the crossover from the scaling of very hard, i.e. rigid disks to the scaling in the soft, jamming regime.
