Security Evaluation of Block-based Image Encryption for Vision Transformer against Jigsaw Puzzle Solver Attack

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the security of a block-based image encryption for the vision transformer against jigsaw puzzle solver attacks. The vision transformer, a model for image classification based on the transformer architecture, is carried out by dividing an image into a grid of square patches. Some encryption schemes for the vision transformer have been proposed by applying block-based image encryption such as block scrambling and rotating to patches of the image. On the other hand, the security of encryption scheme for the vision transformer has never evaluated. In this paper, jigsaw puzzle solver attacks are utilized to evaluate the security of encrypted images by regarding the divided patches as pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. In experiments, an image is resized and divided into patches to apply block scrambling-based image encryption, and then the security of encrypted images for the vision transformer against jigsaw puzzle solver attacks is evaluated.

Protection of SVM Model with Secret Key from Unauthorized Access

In this paper, we propose a block-wise image transformation method with a secret key for support vector machine (SVM) models. Models trained by using transformed images offer a poor performance to unauthorized users without a key, while they can offer a high performance to authorized users with a key. The proposed method is demonstrated to be robust enough against unauthorized access even under the use of kernel functions in a facial recognition experiment.

Self-Supervised Intrinsic Image Decomposition Network Considering Reflectance Consistency

We propose a novel intrinsic image decomposition network considering reflectance consistency. Intrinsic image decomposition aims to decompose an image into illumination-invariant and illumination-variant components, referred to as ``reflectance'' and ``shading,'' respectively. Although there are three consistencies that the reflectance and shading should satisfy, most conventional work does not sufficiently account for consistency with respect to reflectance, owing to the use of a white-illuminant decomposition model and the lack of training images capturing the same objects under various illumination-brightness and -color conditions. For this reason, the three consistencies are considered in the proposed network by using a color-illuminant model and training the network with losses calculated from images taken under various illumination conditions. In addition, the proposed network can be trained in a self-supervised manner because various illumination conditions can easily be simulated. Experimental results show that our network can decompose images into reflectance and shading components.

Proxy System with JPEG Bitstream-Based File-Size Preserving Encryption for Cloud Photo Streams

In this paper, we propose a proxy system with JPEG bitstream-based file-size preserving encryption to securely store compressed images in cloud environments. The proposed system, which is settled between client's device and the Internet, allows us not only to have exact the same file size as that of original JPEG streams but also to maintain a predetermined image format. In an experiment, the proposed system is verified to be effective in two cloud photo steams: Google Photo and iCloud Photo.

A Privacy-Preserving Image Retrieval Scheme Using A Codebook Generated From Independent Plain-Image Dataset

In this paper, we propose a privacy-preserving image-retrieval scheme using a codebook generated by using a plain-image dataset. Encryption-then-compression (EtC) images, which were proposed for EtC systems, have been used in conventional privacy-preserving image-retrieval schemes, in which a codebook is generated from EtC images uploaded by image owners, and extended SIMPLE descriptors are then calculated as image descriptors by using the codebook. In contrast, in the proposed scheme, a codebook is generated from a dataset independent of uploaded images. The use of an independent dataset enables us not only to use a codebook that does not require recalculation but also to constantly provide a high retrieval accuracy. In an experiment, the proposed scheme is demonstrated to maintain a high retrieval performance, even if codebooks are generated from a plain image dataset independent of image owners' encrypted images.

Access Control Using Spatially Invariant Permutation of Feature Maps for Semantic Segmentation Models

In this paper, we propose an access control method that uses the spatially invariant permutation of feature maps with a secret key for protecting semantic segmentation models. Segmentation models are trained and tested by permuting selected feature maps with a secret key. The proposed method allows rightful users with the correct key not only to access a model to full capacity but also to degrade the performance for unauthorized users. Conventional access control methods have focused only on image classification tasks, and these methods have never been applied to semantic segmentation tasks. In an experiment, the protected models were demonstrated to allow rightful users to obtain almost the same performance as that of non-protected models but also to be robust against access by unauthorized users without a key. In addition, a conventional method with block-wise transformations was also verified to have degraded performance under semantic segmentation models.

Spatially varying white balancing for mixed and non-uniform illuminants

In this paper, we propose a novel white balance adjustment, called "spatially varying white balancing," for single, mixed, and non-uniform illuminants. By using n diagonal matrices along with a weight, the proposed method can reduce lighting effects on all spatially varying colors in an image under such illumination conditions. In contrast, conventional white balance adjustments do not consider the correcting of all colors except under a single illuminant. Also, multi-color balance adjustments can map multiple colors into corresponding ground truth colors, although they may cause the rank deficiency problem to occur as a non-diagonal matrix is used, unlike white balancing. In an experiment, the effectiveness of the proposed method is shown under mixed and non-uniform illuminants, compared with conventional white and multi-color balancing. Moreover, under a single illuminant, the proposed method has almost the same performance as the conventional white balancing.

A Protection Method of Trained CNN Model Using Feature Maps Transformed With Secret Key From Unauthorized Access

In this paper, we propose a model protection method for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with a secret key so that authorized users get a high classification accuracy, and unauthorized users get a low classification accuracy. The proposed method applies a block-wise transformation with a secret key to feature maps in the network. Conventional key-based model protection methods cannot maintain a high accuracy when a large key space is selected. In contrast, the proposed method not only maintains almost the same accuracy as non-protected accuracy, but also has a larger key space. Experiments were carried out on the CIFAR-10 dataset, and results show that the proposed model protection method outperformed the previous key-based model protection methods in terms of classification accuracy, key space, and robustness against key estimation attacks and fine-tuning attacks.

A universal detector of CNN-generated images using properties of checkerboard artifacts in the frequency domain

We propose a novel universal detector for detecting images generated by using CNNs. In this paper, properties of checkerboard artifacts in CNN-generated images are considered, and the spectrum of images is enhanced in accordance with the properties. Next, a classifier is trained by using the enhanced spectrums to judge a query image to be a CNN-generated ones or not. In addition, an ensemble of the proposed detector with emphasized spectrums and a conventional detector is proposed to improve the performance of these methods. In an experiment, the proposed ensemble is demonstrated to outperform a state-of-the-art method under some conditions.

Protecting Semantic Segmentation Models by Using Block-wise Image Encryption with Secret Key from Unauthorized Access

Since production-level trained deep neural networks (DNNs) are of a great business value, protecting such DNN models against copyright infringement and unauthorized access is in a rising demand. However, conventional model protection methods focused only the image classification task, and these protection methods were never applied to semantic segmentation although it has an increasing number of applications. In this paper, we propose to protect semantic segmentation models from unauthorized access by utilizing block-wise transformation with a secret key for the first time. Protected models are trained by using transformed images. Experiment results show that the proposed protection method allows rightful users with the correct key to access the model to full capacity and deteriorate the performance for unauthorized users. However, protected models slightly drop the segmentation performance compared to non-protected models.

Separated-Spectral-Distribution Estimation Based on Bayesian Inference with Single RGB Camera

In this paper, we propose a novel method for separately estimating spectral distributions from images captured by a typical RGB camera. The proposed method allows us to separately estimate a spectral distribution of illumination, reflectance, or camera sensitivity, while recent hyperspectral cameras are limited to capturing a joint spectral distribution from a scene. In addition, the use of Bayesian inference makes it possible to take into account prior information of both spectral distributions and image noise as probability distributions. As a result, the proposed method can estimate spectral distributions in a unified way, and it can enhance the robustness of the estimation against noise, which conventional spectral-distribution estimation methods cannot. The use of Bayesian inference also enables us to obtain the confidence of estimation results. In an experiment, the proposed method is shown not only to outperform conventional estimation methods in terms of RMSE but also to be robust against noise.

A Protection Method of Trained CNN Model with Secret Key from Unauthorized Access

In this paper, we propose a novel method for protecting convolutional neural network (CNN) models with a secret key set so that unauthorized users without the correct key set cannot access trained models. The method enables us to protect not only from copyright infringement but also the functionality of a model from unauthorized access without any noticeable overhead. We introduce three block-wise transformations with a secret key set to generate learnable transformed images: pixel shuffling, negative/positive transformation, and FFX encryption. Protected models are trained by using transformed images. The results of experiments with the CIFAR and ImageNet datasets show that the performance of a protected model was close to that of non-protected models when the key set was correct, while the accuracy severely dropped when an incorrect key set was given. The protected model was also demonstrated to be robust against various attacks. Compared with the state-of-the-art model protection with passports, the proposed method does not have any additional layers in the network, and therefore, there is no overhead during training and inference processes.

Block Scrambling Image Encryption Used in Combination with Data Augmentation for Privacy-Preserving DNNs

In this paper, we propose a novel learnable image encryption method for privacy-preserving deep neural networks (DNNs). The proposed method is carried out on the basis of block scrambling used in combination with data augmentation techniques such as random cropping, horizontal flip and grid mask. The use of block scrambling enhances robustness against various attacks, and in contrast, the combination with data augmentation enables us to maintain a high classification accuracy even when using encrypted images. In an image classification experiment, the proposed method is demonstrated to be effective in privacy-preserving DNNs.

The protected images allow us to directly extract Histogram-of-Oriented-Gradients (HOG) features for privacy-preserving machine learning. In an experiment, HOG features extracted from gradient-preserving images are applied to a face recognition algorithm to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Multi-color balance for color constancy

In this paper, we propose a novel multi-color balance adjustment for color constancy. The proposed method, called "n-color balancing," allows us not only to perfectly correct n target colors on the basis of corresponding ground truth colors but also to correct colors other than the n colors. In contrast, although white-balancing can perfectly adjust white, colors other than white are not considered in the framework of white-balancing in general. In an experiment, the proposed multi-color balancing is demonstrated to outperform both conventional white and multi-color balance adjustments including Bradford's model.

Multi-color balancing for correctly adjusting the intensity of target colors

In this paper, we propose a novel multi-color balance method for reducing color distortions caused by lighting effects. The proposed method allows us to adjust three target-colors chosen by a user in an input image so that each target color is the same as the corresponding destination (benchmark) one. In contrast, white balancing is a typical technique for reducing the color distortions, however, they cannot remove lighting effects on colors other than white. In an experiment, the proposed method is demonstrated to be able to remove lighting effects on selected three colors, and is compared with existing white balance adjustments.

Piracy-Resistant DNN Watermarking by Block-Wise Image Transformation with Secret Key

In this paper, we propose a novel DNN watermarking method that utilizes a learnable image transformation method with a secret key. The proposed method embeds a watermark pattern in a model by using learnable transformed images and allows us to remotely verify the ownership of the model. As a result, it is piracy-resistant, so the original watermark cannot be overwritten by a pirated watermark, and adding a new watermark decreases the model accuracy unlike most of the existing DNN watermarking methods. In addition, it does not require a special pre-defined training set or trigger set. We empirically evaluated the proposed method on the CIFAR-10 dataset. The results show that it was resilient against fine-tuning and pruning attacks while maintaining a high watermark-detection accuracy.

Transfer Learning-Based Model Protection With Secret Key

We propose a novel method for protecting trained models with a secret key so that unauthorized users without the correct key cannot get the correct inference. By taking advantage of transfer learning, the proposed method enables us to train a large protected model like a model trained with ImageNet by using a small subset of a training dataset. It utilizes a learnable encryption step with a secret key to generate learnable transformed images. Models with pre-trained weights are fine-tuned by using such transformed images. In experiments with the ImageNet dataset, it is shown that the performance of a protected model was close to that of a non-protected model when the correct key was given, while the accuracy tremendously dropped when an incorrect key was used. The protected model was also demonstrated to be robust against key estimation attacks.
