Localized Supersoft Supersymmetry Breaking

We consider supersymmetry breaking models in which the MSSM is extended to include an additional chiral adjoint field for each gauge group with which the the MSSM gauginos acquire Dirac masses. We investigate a framework in which the Standard Model gauge fields propagate in the bulk of a warped extra dimension while quarks and leptons are localized on the ultraviolet brane. The adjoint fields are localized on the infrared brane, where supersymmetry is broken in a hidden sector. This setup naturally suppresses potentially large flavor violating effects, while allowing perturbative gauge coupling unification under SU(5) to be realized. The Standard Model superpartner masses exhibit a supersoft spectrum. Since the soft scalar masses are generated at very low scales of order the gaugino masses these models are significantly less fine-tuned than other supersymmetric models. The LSP in this class of models is the gravitino, while the NLSP is the stau. We show that this theory has an approximate R symmetry under which the gauginos are charged. This symmetry allows several possibilities for experimentally distinguishing the Dirac nature of the gauginos.

What can we learn from neutrinoless double beta decay experiments?

We assess how well next generation neutrinoless double beta decay and normal neutrino beta decay experiments can answer four fundamental questions. 1) If neutrinoless double beta decay searches do not detect a signal, and if the spectrum is known to be inverted hierarchy, can we conclude that neutrinos are Dirac particles? 2) If neutrinoless double beta decay searches are negative and a next generation ordinary beta decay experiment detects the neutrino mass scale, can we conclude that neutrinos are Dirac particles? 3) If neutrinoless double beta decay is observed with a large neutrino mass element, what is the total mass in neutrinos? 4) If neutrinoless double beta decay is observed but next generation beta decay searches for a neutrino mass only set a mass upper limit, can we establish whether the mass hierarchy is normal or inverted? We base our answers on the expected performance of next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiments and on simulations of the accuracy of calculations of nuclear matrix elements.

Gravitational Baryogenesis

We show that a gravitational interaction between the derivative of the Ricci scalar curvature and the baryon-number current dynamically breaks CPT in an expanding universe and, combined with baryon-number-violating interactions, can drive the universe towards an equilibrium baryon asymmetry that is observationally acceptable.

Electroweak Symmetry Breaking via UV Insensitive Anomaly Mediation

Anomaly mediation solves the supersymmetric flavor and CP problems. This is because the superconformal anomaly dictates that supersymmetry breaking is transmitted through nearly flavor-blind infrared physics that is highly predictive and UV insensitive. Slepton mass squareds, however, are predicted to be negative. This can be solved by adding D-terms for U(1)_Y and U(1)_{B-L} while retaining the UV insensitivity. In this paper we consider electroweak symmetry breaking via UV insensitive anomaly mediation in several models. For the MSSM we find a stable vacuum when tanbeta < 1, but in this region the top Yukawa coupling blows up only slightly above the supersymmetry breaking scale. For the NMSSM, we find a stable electroweak breaking vacuum but with a chargino that is too light. Replacing the cubic singlet term in the NMSSM superpotential with a term linear in the singlet we find a stable vacuum and viable spectrum. Most of the parameter region with correct vacua requires a large superpotential coupling, precisely what is expected in the ``Fat Higgs'' model in which the superpotential is generated dynamically. We have therefore found the first viable UV complete, UV insensitive supersymmetry breaking model that solves the flavor and CP problems automatically: the Fat Higgs model with UV insensitive anomaly mediation. Moreover, the cosmological gravitino problem is naturally solved, opening up the possibility of realistic thermal leptogenesis.

Outlook: The Next Twenty Years

I present an outlook for the next twenty years in particle physics. I start with the big questions in our field, broken down into four categories: horizontal, vertical, heaven, and hell. Then I discuss how we attack the big questions in each category during the next twenty years. I argue for a synergy between many different approaches taken in our field.

Impact of Neutrino Oscillation Measurements on Theory

Neutrino oscillation data had been a big surprise to theorists, and indeed they have ongoing impact on theory. I review what the impact has been, and what measurements will have critical impact on theory in the future.

Lepton-flavor mixing and $K \to πν\barν$ decays

The impact of possible sources of lepton-flavor mixing on $K \to πν\barν$ decays is analysed. At the one-loop level lepton-flavor mixing originated from non-diagonal lepton mass matrices cannot generate a CP-conserving $K_L \to π^0ν\barν$ amplitude. The rates of these modes are sensitive to leptonic flavor violation when there are at least two different leptonic mixing matrices. New interactions that violate both quark and lepton universalities could enhance the CP-conserving component of $Γ(K_L \to π^0ν\barν)$ and have a substantial impact. Explicit examples of these effects in the context of supersymmetric models, with and without R-parity conservation, are discussed.

The Minimal Supersymmetric Fat Higgs Model

We present a calculable supersymmetric theory of a composite ``fat'' Higgs boson. Electroweak symmetry is broken dynamically through a new gauge interaction that becomes strong at an intermediate scale. The Higgs mass can easily be 200-450 GeV along with the superpartner masses, solving the supersymmetric little hierarchy problem. We explicitly verify that the model is consistent with precision electroweak data without fine-tuning. Gauge coupling unification can be maintained despite the inherently strong dynamics involved in electroweak symmetry breaking. Supersymmetrizing the Standard Model therefore does not imply a light Higgs mass, contrary to the lore in the literature. The Higgs sector of the minimal Fat Higgs model has a mass spectrum that is distinctly different from the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

WMAPping out Neutrino Masses

Recent data from from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) place important bounds on the neutrino sector. The precise determination of the baryon number in the universe puts a strong constraint on the number of relativistic species during Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis. WMAP data, when combined with the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS), also directly constrain the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. These results impinge upon a neutrino oscillation interpretation of the result from the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND). We also note that the Heidelberg--Moscow evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay is only consistent with the WMAP+2dFGRS data for the largest values of the nuclear matrix element.

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in Light of SNO Salt Data

In the SNO data from its salt run, probably the most significant result is the consistency with the previous results without assuming the 8B energy spectrum. In addition, they have excluded the maximal mixing at a very high confidence level. This has an important implication on the double beta decay experiments. For the inverted or degenerate mass spectrum, we find | _{ee}| > 0.013 eV at 95% CL, and the next generation experiments can discriminate Majorana and Dirac neutrinos if the inverted or degenerate mass spectrum will be confirmed by the improvements in cosmology, tritium data beta decay, or long-baseline oscillation experiments.

Supersymmetric Color Superconductivity

Recent interest in novel phases in high density QCD motivates the study of high density supersymmetric QCD (SQCD), where powerful exact results for supersymmetric gauge theories can be brought to bear in the strongly coupled regime. We begin by describing how a chemical potential can be incorporated into a supersymmetric theory as a spurion vector superfield. We then study supersymmetric SU(N_c) gauge theories with N_f flavors of quarks in the presence of a baryon chemical potential mu, and describe the global symmetry breaking patterns at low energy. Our analysis requires mu < Lambda and is thus complementary to the variational approach that has been successful for mu << Lambda. We find that for N_f < N_c a modified U(1)_B symmetry is preserved, analogous to the non-supersymmetric 2SC phase, whereas for N_f=N_c there is a critical chemical potential above which the U(1)_B is broken, as it is in the non-supersymmetric CFL phase. We further analyze the cases with N_c+1 <= N_f < 3/2 N_c and find that baryon number is broken dynamically for mu > mu_c. We also give a qualitative description of the phases in the `conformal window', 3/2 N_c < N_f < 3N_c, at finite density.

Technicolorful Supersymmetry

Technicolor achieves electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) in an elegant and natural way, while it suffers from severe model building difficulties. I propose to abandon its secondary goal to eliminate scalar bosons in exchange of solving numerous problems using supersymmetry. It helps to understand walking dynamics much better with certain exact results. In the particular model presented here, there is no light elementary Higgs boson and the EWSB is fully dynamical, hence explaining the hierarchy; There is no alignment problem and no light pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons exist; The fermion masses are generated by a ultraviolet-complete renormalizable extended technicolor sector with techni-GIM mechanism and hence the sector is safe from flavor-changing-neutral-current constraints; The "e+ e-'' production of techni-states in the superconformal window is calculable; The electroweak precision observables are (un)fortunately not calculable.

CPT Tests: Kaon vs Neutrinos

CPT violation has an impressive limit in the neutral kaon system |m(K^0) - m(\bar{K}^0)| < 10^{-18} m_K = 0.50 \times 10^{-18} GeV. However, if viewed as a constraint on the mass-squared, the bound appears weak, |m^2(K^0) - m^2(\bar{K}^0)| < 0.25 eV^2. We point out that neutrino oscillation offers better limits on CPT violation in this case. The comparison of solar and rector neutrino results puts the best limit on CPT violation by far, |Δm^2_ν- Δm^2_{\barν}| < 1.3 \times 10^{-3} eV^2 (90% CL).

Statistical Test of Anarchy

"Anarchy" is the hypothesis that there is no fundamental distinction among the three flavors of neutrinos. It describes the mixing angles as random variables, drawn from well defined probability distributions dictated by the group Haar measure. We perform a Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) statistical test to verify whether anarchy is consistent with all neutrino data, including the new result presented by KamLAND. We find a KS probability for Nature's choice of mixing angles equal to 64%, quite consistent with the anarchical hypothesis. In turn, assuming that anarchy is indeed correct, we compute lower bounds on |U_{e3}|^2, the remaining unknown "angle" of the leptonic mixing matrix.

Standard Model Higgs from Higher Dimensional Gauge Fields

We consider the possibility that the standard model Higgs fields may originate from extra components of higher dimensional gauge fields. Theories of this type considered before have had problems accommodating the standard model fermion content and Yukawa couplings different from the gauge coupling. Considering orbifolds based on abelian discrete groups we are lead to a 6 dimensional G_2 gauge theory compactified on T^2/Z_4. This theory can naturally produce the SM Higgs fields with the right quantum numbers while predicting the value of the weak mixing angle sin^2 theta_W = 0.25 at the tree-level, close to the experimentally observed one. The quartic scalar coupling for the Higgs is generated by the higher dimensional gauge interaction and predicts the existence of a light Higgs. We point out that one can write a quadratically divergent counter term for Higgs mass localized to the orbifold fixed point. However, we calculate these operators and show that higher dimensional gauge interactions do not generate them at least at one loop. Fermions are introduced at orbifold fixed points, making it easy to accommodate the standard model fermion content. Yukawa interactions are generated by Wilson lines. They may be generated by the exchange of massive bulk fermions, and the fermion mass hierarchy can be obtained. Around a TeV, the first KK modes would appear as well as additional fermion modes localized at the fixed point needed to cancel the quadratic divergences from the Yukawa interactions. The cutoff scale of the theory could be a few times 10 TeV.

Atmospheric Neutrinos Can Make Beauty Strange

The large observed mixing angle in atmospheric neutrinos, coupled with Grand Unification, motivates the search for a large mixing between right-handed strange and bottom squarks. Such mixing does not appear in the standard CKM phenomenology, but may induce significant b to s transitions through gluino diagrams. Working in the mass eigenbasis, we show quantitatively that an order one effect on CP violation in B_d to phi+K_S is possible due to a large mixing between right-handed b and s squarks, while still satisfying constraints from b to s + gamma. We also include the effect of right- and left-handed bottom squark mixing proportional to m_b*mu*tan(beta). For small mu*tan(beta) there may also be a large effect in B_s mixing correlated with a large effect in B_d to phi+K_S, typically mixing effects are greater than 100 ps^{-1}, an unambiguous signal of new physics at Tevatron Run II.

Supergravity Inflation Free from Harmful Relics

We present a realistic supergravity inflation model which is free from the overproduction of potentially dangerous relics in cosmology, namely moduli and gravitinos which can lead to the inconsistencies with the predictions of baryon asymmetry and nucleosynthesis. The radiative correction turns out to play a crucial role in our analysis which raises the mass of supersymmetry breaking field to intermediate scale. We pay a particular attention to the non-thermal production of gravitinos using the non-minimal Kahler potential we obtained from loop correction. This non-thermal gravitino production however is diminished because of the relatively small scale of inflaton mass and small amplitudes of hidden sector fields.

Matrix Model Description of Baryonic Deformations

We investigate supersymmetric QCD with N_c+1 flavors using an extension of the recently proposed relation between gauge theories and matrix models. The impressive agreement between the two sides provides a beautiful confirmation of the extension of the gauge theory-matrix model relation to this case.
