Hermitian Flavor Violation

The fundamental constraint on two Higgs doublet models comes from the requirement of sufficiently suppressing flavor-changing neutral currents. There are various standard approaches for dealing with this problem, but they all tend to share a common feature; all of the Higgs doublets couple very weakly to the first generation quarks. Here we consider a simple two Higgs doublet model which is able to have large couplings to the first generation, while also being safe from flavor constraints. We assume only that there is an SU(3)_f flavor symmetry which is respected by the couplings of one of the Higgs doublets, and which is broken by Hermitian Yukawa couplings of the second doublet. As a result of the large permitted couplings to the first generation quarks, this scenario may be used to address the excess in W+dijet events recently observed by CDF at the Tevatron. Moreover, Hermitian Yukawa coupling matrices arise naturally in a broad class of solutions to the strong CP problem, providing a compelling context for the model.

Saving fourth generation and baryon number by living long

Recent studies of precision electroweak observables have led to the conclusion that a fourth generation is highly constrained. However, we point out that a long-lived fourth generation can reopen a large portion of the parameter space. In addition, it preserves baryon and lepton asymmetries against sphaleron erasure even if $B-L=0$. It opens up the possibility of exact $B-L$ symmetry and hence Dirac neutrinos. The fourth generation can be observed at the LHC with unique signatures of long-lived particles in the near future.

Cascade Events at IceCube+DeepCore as a Definitive Constraint on the Dark Matter Interpretation of the PAMELA and Fermi Anomalies

Dark matter decaying or annihilating into mu+mu- or tau+tau- has been proposed as an explanation for the e+e- anomalies reported by PAMELA and Fermi. Recent analyses show that IceCube, supplemented by DeepCore, will be able to significantly constrain the parameter space of decays to mu+mu-, and rule out decays to tau+tau- and annihilations to mu+mu- in less than five years of running. These analyses rely on measuring track-like events in IceCube+DeepCore from down-going nu_mu. In this paper we show that by instead measuring cascade events, which are induced by all neutrino flavors, IceCube+DeepCore can rule out decays to mu+mu- in only three years of running, and rule out decays to tau+tau- and annihilation to mu+mu- in only one year of running. These constraints are highly robust to the choice of dark matter halo profile and independent of dark matter-nucleon cross-section.

Cosmic Ray Spectra in Nambu-Goldstone Dark Matter Models

We discuss the cosmic ray spectra in annihilating/decaying Nambu-Goldstone dark matter models. The recent observed positron/electron excesses at PAMELA and Fermi experiments are well fitted by the dark matter with a mass of 3TeV for the annihilating model, while with a mass of 6 TeV for the decaying model. We also show that the Nambu-Goldstone dark matter models predict a distinctive gamma-ray spectrum in a certain parameter space.

High-Energy Neutrino Signatures of Dark Matter Decaying into Leptons

Decaying dark matter has previously been proposed as a possible explanation for the excess high energy cosmic ray electrons and positrons seen by PAMELA and the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope (FGST). To accommodate these signals however, the decays must be predominantly leptonic, to muons or taus, and therefore produce neutrinos, potentially detectable with the IceCube neutrino observatory. We find that, with five years of data, IceCube (supplemented by DeepCore) will be able to significantly constrain the relevant parameter space of decaying dark matter, and may even be capable of discovering dark matter decaying in the halo of the Milky Way.

Top quark forward-backward asymmetry from new t-channel physics

Motivated by recent measurements of the top quark forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron, we study how t-channel new physics can contribute to a large value. We concentrate on a theory with an abelian gauge boson possessing flavor changing couplings between up and top quarks, but satisfies flavor physics constraints. Collider constraints are strong, but can be consistent with the aid of small flavor diagonal couplings. We find that M_Z' ~ 160 GeV can yield a total lab-frame asymmetry of ~18% without being in conflict with other observables. There are implications for future collider searches, including exotic top quark decays, like-sign top quark production, and detailed measurements of the top production cross section. An alternate model with a gauged non-Abelian flavor symmetry would have similar phenomenology, but lacks the like-sign top signal.

High Energy Neutrinos As A Test of Leptophilic Dark Matter

Recently, observations by PAMELA, the Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope, and other cosmic ray experiments have generated a great deal of interest in dark matter (DM) particles which annihilate at a high rate to leptons. In this letter, we explore the possibility of using large volume neutrino telescopes, such as IceCube, to constrain such models; specifically we consider signals due to DM annihilation in the inner Milky Way. We find that, if Dark Matter annihilations are responsible for the signals observed by PAMELA and FGST, then IceCube (in conjunction with the planned low threshold extension, DeepCore) should detect or exclude the corresponding neutrino signal from the inner Milky Way with a few years of observation.

Topological Dark Matter

Kibble mechanism drastically underestimates the production of topological defects, as confirmed recently in atomic and condensed matter systems. If non-thermally produced, they can be cosmological dark matter of mass 1-10 PeV. If thermalized, skyrmion of mass 1-10 TeV is also a viable dark matter candidate, whose decay may explain $e^\pm$ spectra in cosmic rays recently measured by PAMELA, FERMI, and HESS. Models that produce magnetic monopoles below the inflation scale, such as Pati-Salam unification, are excluded.

Randall-Sundrum graviton spin determination using azimuthal angular dependence

Quantum interference of helicity amplitudes provides a powerful tool for measuring the spins of new particles. By looking at the azimuthal angular dependence of the differential cross-section in the production followed by decay of a new particle species one can determine its spin by looking at the various cosine modes. The heavy spin-2 Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton provides a unique signature with a $\cos{(4 ϕ)}$ mode. We study the feasibility of this approach to measuring the spin of the KK graviton in the Randall-Sundrum Model at the LHC.

Nambu-Goldstone Dark Matter and Cosmic Ray Electron and Positron Excess

We propose a model of dark matter identified with a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson in the dynamical supersymmetry breaking sector in a gauge mediation scenario. The dark matter particles annihilate via a below-threshold narrow resonance into a pair of R-axions each of which subsequently decays into a pair of light leptons. The Breit-Wigner enhancement explains the excess electron and positron fluxes reported in the recent cosmic ray experiments PAMELA, ATIC and PPB-BETS without postulating an overdensity in halo, and the limit on anti-proton flux from PAMELA is naturally evaded.

Breit-Wigner Enhancement of Dark Matter Annihilation

We point out that annihilation of dark matter in the galactic halo can be enhanced relative to that in the early universe due to a Breit-Wigner tail, if the dark matter annihilates through a pole just below the threshold. This provides a new explanation to the "boost factor" which is suggested by the recent data of the PAMELA, ATIC and PPB-BETS cosmic-ray experiments.

Determining Spin through Quantum Azimuthal-Angle Correlations

Determining the spin of new particles is critical in identifying the true theory among various extensions of the Standard Model at the next generation of colliders. Quantum interference between different helicity amplitudes was shown to be effective when the final state is fully reconstructible. However, many interesting new physics processes allow only for partial reconstruction. In this paper, we show how the interference effect can be unambiguously extracted even in processes that have two-fold ambiguity, by considering the correlation between two decay planes in e+ e- collisions.

Unified origin of baryons and dark matter

We investigate the possibility that both the baryon asymmetry of the universe and the observed cold dark matter density are generated by decays of a heavy scalar field which dominates the universe before nucleosynthesis. Since baryons and cold dark matter have common origin, this mechanism yields a natural explanation of the similarity of the corresponding energy densities. The cosmological moduli and gravitino problems are avoided.

Looking up at seesaw and GUT scales from TeV

In this talk, I discuss how we may approach physics at the seesaw- and GUT-scales using data from the TeV scale. Even though we cannot hope to directly reach these energy scales using particle accelerators, we may get convinced of grand unification and seesaw mechanism based on experimental data if Nature is kind to us. In addition, we may find compelling reason to believe in leptogenesis based on experimental data. This cannot be achieved by a single experiment, but rather a collection of them, based on LHC, ILC, neutrino oscillation, neutrinoless double beta decay, direct dark matter detection, CMB power spectrum and its tensor mode.

Quantum Interference Effects Among Helicities at LEP-II and Tevatron

A completely model-independent method of obtaining information on the spin using the quantum interference effect among various helicity states was proposed in a recent paper. Here we point out that this effect should be demonstrable in the existing data on e^-e^+ \to W^+ W^- at LEP-II and p \bar{p} \to Z^0 + j at Tevatron.

Discriminating spin through quantum interference

Many of the proposed solutions to the hierarchy and naturalness problems postulate new `partner' fields to the standard model particles. Determining the spins of these new particles will be critical in distinguishing among the various possible SM extensions, yet proposed methods rely on the underlying models. We propose a new model-independent method for spin measurements which takes advantage of quantum interference among helicity states. We demonstrate that this method will be able to discriminate scalar particles from higher spin states at the ILC, and discuss application to higher spins and possible uses at the LHC.

More Visible Effects of the Hidden Sector

There is a growing appreciation that hidden sector dynamics may affect the supersymmetry breaking parameters in the visible sector (supersymmetric standard model), especially when the dynamics is strong and superconformal. We point out that there are effects that have not been previously discussed in the literature. For example, the gaugino masses are suppressed relative to the gravitino mass. We discuss their implications in the context of various mediation mechanisms. The issues discussed include anomaly mediation with singlets, the mu (B mu) problem in gauge and gaugino mediation, and distinct mass spectra for the superparticles that have not been previously considered.

Proton Hexality from an Anomalous Flavor U(1) and Neutrino Masses - Linking to the String Scale

We devise minimalistic gauged U(1)_X Froggatt-Nielsen models which at low-energy give rise to the recently suggested discrete gauge Z_6 symmetry, proton hexality, thus stabilizing the proton. Assuming three generations of right-handed neutrinos, with the proper choice of X-charges, we obtain viable neutrino masses. Furthermore, we find scenarios such that no X-charged hidden sector superfields are needed, which from a bottom-up perspective allows the calculation of g_string, g_X and G_SM's Kac-Moody levels. The only mass scale apart from M_grav is m_soft.
