Application of entanglement conditions to spin systems

There have been numerous studies of entanglement in spin systems. These have usually focussed on examining the entanglement between individual spins or determining whether the state of the system is completely separable. Here we present conditions that allow us to determine whether blocks of spins are entangled. We show that sometimes these conditions can detect entanglement better than conditions involving individual spins. We apply these conditions to study entanglement in spin wave states, both when there are only a few magnons present and also at finite temperature.

Conditions for entanglement in multipartite systems

We introduce two entanglement conditions that take the form of inequalities involving expectation values of operators. These conditions are sufficient conditions for entanglement, that is if they are satisfied the state is entangled, but if they are not, one can say nothing about the entanglement of the state. These conditions are quite flexible, because the operators in them are not specified, and they are particularly useful in detecting multipartite entanglement. We explore the range of utility of these conditions by considering a number of examples of entangled states, and seeing under what conditions entanglement in them can be detected by the inequalities presented here.

Impact of amplifying media on the Casimir force

On the basis of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, a theory of Casimir forces in the presence of on linearly amplifying bodies is presented which provides a consistent framework for studying the effect of, e.g., amplifying left-handed metamaterials on dispersion forces. A general formula for the Casimir force acting on an amplifying body is derived. It is shown that the force can be given in terms of the classical Green tensor and that it can be decomposed into a resonant component associated with emission processes and an off-resonant Lifshitz-type component looking formally the same as for a purely absorbing body. It is explicitly demonstrated that the result generalizes microscopic approaches beyond the perturbative domain: In the dilute-gas limit, the force acting on an amplifying body reduces to a sum over the Casimir--Polder forces acting on the excited body atoms.

Detecting entanglement with non-hermitian operators

We derive several entanglement conditions employing non-hermitian operators. We start with two conditions that were derived previously for field mode operators, and use them to derive conditions that can be used to show the existence of field-atom entanglement and entanglement between groups of atoms. The original conditions can be strengthened by making them invariant under certain sets of local unitary transformations, such as Gaussian operations. We then apply these conditions to several examples, such as the Dicke model. We conclude with a short discussion of how local uncertainty relations with non-hermitian operators can be used to derive entanglement conditions.

Casimir force on amplifying bodies

Based on a unified approach to macroscopic QED that allows for the inclusion of amplification in a limited space and frequency range, we study the Casimir force as a Lorentz force on an arbitrary partially amplifying system of linearly locally responding (isotropic) magnetoelectric bodies. We demonstrate that the force on a weakly polarisable/magnetisable amplifying object in the presence of a purely absorbing environment can be expressed as a sum over the Casimir--Polder forces on the excited atoms inside the body. As an example, the resonant force between a plate consisting of a dilute gas of excited atoms and a perfect mirror is calculated.

Local-field corrected van der Waals potentials in magnetodielectric multilayer systems

Within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics in linear, causal media, we study the van der Waals potentials of ground-state atoms in planar magnetodielectric host media. Our investigation extends earlier ones in two aspects: It allows for the atom to be embedded in a medium, thus covers many more realistic systems; and it takes account of the local-field correction. Two- and three-layer configurations are treated in detail both analytically and numerically. It is shown that an interplay of electric and magnetic properties in neighbouring media may give rise to potential wells or walls. Local-field corrections as high as 80% are found. By calculating the full potential including the translationally invariant and variant parts, we propose a way to estimate the (finite) value of the dispersion potential at the surface between two media. Connection with earlier work intended for biological applications is established.

Van der Waals interaction and spontaneous decay of an excited atom in a superlens-type geometry

Within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, the resonant van der Waals potential experienced by an excited two-level atom near a planar magneto-electric two-layer system consisting of a slab of left-handed material and a perfect mirror is studied. It is shown that disregarding of material absorption leads to unphysical results, with divergent values for the potential away from the surface. Under appropriate conditions, the setup is found to feature a barrier near the surface which can be employed to levitate particles or used as a trapping or cooling mechanism. Finally, the problem of spontaneous decay [J. Kästel and M. Fleischhauer, Phys. Rev. A \textbf{68}, 011804(R) (2005)] is revisited. Disregarding of absorption is shown to drastically falsify the dependence on the atomic position of the decay rate.

Resonant Casimir--Polder forces in planar meta-materials

We study the resonant Casimir--Polder potential of an excited atom near a half space containing magneto-electric meta-material of various kinds on the basis of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. Analytical results are obtained in the nonretarded and retarded distance regimes and numerical examples are given. We compare our findings with the potential of an excited atom near a left-handed superlens.

Interatomic van der Waals potential in the presence of a magneto-electric sphere

On the basis of a general formula obtained earlier via fourth-order erturbation theory within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, the van der Waals potential between two neutral, unpolarized, ground-state atoms in the presence of a homogeneous, dispersing and absorbing magnetoelectric sphere is studied. When the radius of the sphere becomes sufficiently large, the result asymptotically agrees with that for two atoms near a planar interface. In the opposite limit of a very small sphere, the sphere can effectively be regarded as being a third ground-state atom, and the nonadditive three-atom van der Waals potential is recovered. To illustrate the effect of a sphere of arbitrary radius, numerical results are presented for the triangular arrangement where the atoms are at equidistance from the sphere, and for the linear arrangement where the atoms and the sphere are aligned along a straight line. As demonstrated, the enhancement or reduction of the interaction potential in the presence of purely electric or magnetic spheres can be physically understood in terms of image charges.

Two-atom van der Waals interaction between polarizable/magnetizable atoms near magneto-electric bodies

The van der Waals potential of two atoms in the presence of an arbitrary arrangement of dispersing and absorbing magnetodielectric bodies is studied. Starting from a polarizable atom placed within a given geometry, its interaction with a second polarizable/magnetizable atom is deduced from its Casimir-Polder interaction with a weakly polarizable/magnetizable test body. The general expressions for the van der Waals potential hence obtained are illustrated by considering first the case of two atoms in free space, with special emphasis on the interaction between (i) two polarizable atoms and (ii) a polarizable and a magnetizable atom. Furthermore, the influence of magnetodielectric bodies on the van der Waals interaction is studied in detail for the example of two atoms placed near a perfectly reflecting plate or a magnetodielectric half space, respectively.

Microscopic origin of Casimir-Polder forces

We establish a general relation between dispersion forces. First, based on QED in causal media, leading-order perturbation theory is used to express both the single-atom Casimir-Polder and the two-atom van der Waals potentials in terms of the atomic polarizabilities and the Green tensor for the body-assisted electromagnetic field. Endowed with this geometry-independent framework, we then employ the Born expansion of the Green tensor together with the Clausius-Mosotti relation to prove that the macroscopic Casimir-Polder potential of an atom in the presence of dielectric bodies is due to an infinite sum of its microscopic many-atom van der Waals interactions with the atoms comprising the bodies. This theorem holds for inhomogeneous, dispersing, and absorbing bodies of arbitrary shapes and arbitrary atomic composition on an arbitrary background of additional magnetodielectric bodies.

Casimir-Polder forces: A non-perturbative approach

Within the frame of macroscopic QED in linear, causal media, we study the radiation force of Casimir-Polder type acting on an atom which is positioned near dispersing and absorbing magnetodielectric bodies and initially prepared in an arbitrary electronic state. It is shown that minimal and multipolar coupling lead to essentially the same lowest-order perturbative result for the force acting on an atom in an energy eigenstate. To go beyond perturbation theory, the calculations are based on the exact center-of-mass equation of motion. For a nondriven atom in the weak-coupling regime, the force as a function of time is a superposition of force components that are related to the electronic density-matrix elements at a chosen time. Even the force component associated with the ground state is not derivable from a potential in the ususal way, because of the position dependence of the atomic polarizability. Further, when the atom is initially prepared in a coherent superposition of energy eigenstates, then temporally oscillating force components are observed, which are due to the interaction of the atom with both electric and magnetic fields.

Spontaneous decay of an excited atom placed near a rectangular plate

Using the Born expansion of the Green tensor, we consider the spontaneous decay rate of an excited atom placed in the vicinity of a rectangular plate. We discuss the limitations of the commonly used simplifying assumption that the plate extends to infinity in the lateral directions and examine the effects of the atomic dipole moment orientation, atomic position, and plate boundary and thickness on the atomic decay rate. In particular, it is shown that in the boundary region, the spontaneous decay rate can be strongly modified.

The van der Waals energy of atomic systems near absorbing and dispersing bodies

Within the frame of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics in causal media, the van der Waals interaction between an atomic system and an arbitrary arrangement of dispersing and absorbing dielectric bodies including metals is studied. It is shown that the minimal-coupling scheme and the multipolar-coupling scheme lead to essentially the same formula for the van der Waals potential. As an application, the vdW potential of an atom in the presence of a sphere is derived. Closed expressions for the long-distance (retardation) and short-distance (non-retardation) limits are given, and the effect of material absorption is discussed.

Local-field correction to the spontaneous decay rate of atoms embedded in bodies of finite size

The influence of the size and shape of a dispersing and absorbing dielectric body on the local-field corrected spontaneous-decay of an excited atom embedded in the body is studied on the basis of the real-cavity model. By means of a Born expansion of the Green tensor of the system it is shown that to linear order in the susceptibility of the body the decay rate exactly follows Tomas's formula found for the special case of an atom at the center of a homogeneous dielectric sphere [Phys. Rev. A 63, 053811 (2001)]. It is further shown that for an atom situated at the interior of an arbitrary dielectric body this formula remains valid beyond the linear order. The case of an atom embedded in a weakly polarizable sphere is discussed in detail.

Body-assisted van der Waals interaction between two atoms

Using fourth-order perturbation theory, a general formula for the van der Waals potential of two neutral, unpolarized, ground-state atoms in the presence of an arbitrary arrangement of dispersing and absorbing magnetodielectric bodies is derived. The theory is applied to two atoms in bulk material and in front of a planar multilayer system, with special emphasis on the cases of a perfectly reflecting plate and a semi-infinite half space. It is demonstrated that the enhancement and reduction of the two-atom interaction due to the presence of a perfectly reflecting plate can be understood, at least in the nonretarded limit, by using the method of image charges. For the semi-infinite half space, both analytical and numerical results are presented.

Casimir-Polder interaction of atoms with magnetodielectric bodies

A general theory of the Casimir-Polder interaction of single atoms with dispersing and absorbing magnetodielectric bodies is presented, which is based on QED in linear, causal media. Both ground-state and excited atoms are considered. Whereas the Casimir-Polder force acting on a ground-state atom can conveniently be derived from a perturbative calculation of the atom-field coupling energy, an atom in an excited state is subject to transient force components that can only be fully understood by a dynamical treatment based on the body-assisted vacuum Lorentz force. The results show that the Casimir-Polder force can be influenced by the body-induced broadening and shifting of atomic transitions - an effect that is not accounted for within lowest-order perturbation theory. The theory is used to study the Casimir-Polder force of a ground-state atom placed within a magnetodielectric multilayer system, with special emphasis on thick and thin plates as well as a planar cavity consisting of two thick plates. It is shown how the competing attractive and repulsive force components related to the electric and magnetic properties of the medium, respectively, can - for sufficiently strong magnetic properties - lead to the formation of potential walls and wells.

Generation of long-living entanglement between two separate atoms

A scheme for non-conditional generation of long-living maximally entangled states between two spatially well separated atoms is proposed. In the scheme, $Λ$-type atoms pass a resonator-like equipment of dispersing and absorbing macroscopic bodies giving rise to body-assisted electromagnetic field resonances of well-defined heights and widths. Strong atom-field coupling is combined with weak atom-field coupling to realize entanglement transfer from the dipole-allowed transitions to the dipole-forbidden transitions, thereby the entanglement being preserved when the atoms depart from the bodies and from each other. The theory is applied to the case of the atoms passing by a microsphere.
