Reducing quantum resources for ADAPT-VQE via plateau-operator elimination and correlated mean-field downfolding

Adaptive Derivative-Assembled Problem-Tailored variational quantum eigensolvers (ADAPT-VQE) represent one of the most promising approaches for quantum chemistry on near-term quantum devices. However, their optimization is slow and may stall due to vanishing parameters and redundant operators in the ansatz. In this work, we propose a simple strategy of operator elimination that removes non-contributing operators from the pool once they are detected, enabling the optimization to continue progressing toward convergence. We examine two variants, with and without pool restoration after elimination, and find that the former converges more smoothly and faster than the latter and the standard ADAPT-VQE. To capture dynamical correlations between the active space and its environment, we combine ADAPT-VQE with our recently developed downfolding approach, the one-body downfolding framework (OBDF). In OBDF, the bare molecular Hamiltonian in the active space is replaced by a correlated effective Hamiltonian that incorporates dynamical correlation effects outside the active space. We benchmark our implementation on a linear \ce{H_6} chain, an \ce{H_6} lattice, an \ce{H_6} ring, and the \ce{N_2} molecule using the OpenFermion simulator. Our results show that operator elimination significantly reduces circuit depth and iteration count, and that OBDF-ADAPT-VQE yields energies closer to the full configuration interaction (FCI) reference than the standard approach within the same active space.

Accurate prediction of inverted singlet-triplet excited states using self-consistent spin-opposite perturbation theory

The violation of Hund's rule, resulting in an inverted singlet-triplet (INVEST) gap, represents a paradigm shift in photophysics with major implications for OLED technology. INVEST molecules facilitate barrierless reverse intersystem crossing, theoretically permitting 100\% internal quantum efficiency without thermal activation. However, accurately predicting negative singlet-triplet energy gaps typically demands prohibitive computational costs. In this study, we evaluate the efficacy of our recently developed one-body Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (OBMP2) and its spin-opposite variant (O2BMP2) as efficient alternatives. Benchmarking against 30 INVEST molecules reveals that O2BMP2, with appropriate spin-opposite scaling, achieves the accuracy of ADC(3) and EOM-CCSD. Furthermore, with the possibility of reducing computational complexity to $N^4$, O2BMP2 provides a robust balance of accuracy and efficiency, making it suitable for the high-throughput screening of next-generation INVEST materials.

Coarse geometry of extended admissible groups

Extended admissible groups belong to a particular class of graphs of groups that admit a decomposition generalizing those of non-geometric 3-manifold groups and Croke-Kleiner admissible groups. In this paper, we study several coarse-geometric aspects of extended admissible groups. We show that changing the gluing edge isomorphisms does not affect the quasi-isometry type of these groups. We also prove that, under mild conditions on the vertex groups, extended admissible groups exhibit large-scale nonpositive curvature, thereby answering a question posed by Nguyen-Yang. As an application, our results enlarge the class of extended admissible groups known to admit well-defined quasi-redirecting boundaries, a notion recently introduced by Qing-Rafi. In addition, we compute the divergence of extended admissible groups, generalizing a result of Gersten from non-geometric 3-manifold groups to this broader setting. Finally, we study several aspects of subgroup structure in extended admissible groups.

Quasi-redirecting boundaries of groups with linear divergence and 3-manifold groups

The quasi-redirecting (QR) boundary, introduced by Qing and Rafi, generalizes the Gromov boundary for studying the large-scale geometry of finitely generated groups. Although it is not known to exist for all such groups, its existence has been established for several important classes. We prove that if a finitely generated group G has linear divergence, its QR-boundary is well-defined and consists of a single point. In addition, we show that all finitely generated 3-manifold groups admit well-defined QR-boundaries.

Quasi-redirecting boundaries of non-positively curved groups

The quasi-redirecting (QR) boundary is a close generalization of the Gromov boundary to all finitely generated groups. In this paper, we establish that the QR boundary exists as a topological space for several well-studied classes of groups. These include fundamental groups of irreducible non-geometric 3-manifolds, groups that are hyperbolic relative to subgroups with well-defined QR boundaries, right-angled Artin groups whose defining graphs are trees, and right-angled Coxeter groups whose defining flag complexes are planar. This result significantly broadens the known existence of QR boundaries. Additionally, we give a complete characterization of the QR boundaries of Croke-Kleiner admissible groups that act geometrically on CAT(0) spaces. We show that these boundaries are non-Hausdorff and can be understood as one-point compactifications of the Morse-like directions. Finally, we prove that if G is hyperbolic relative to subgroups with well-defined QR boundaries, then the QR boundary of G maps surjectively onto its Bowditch boundary.

Quasi-isometric rigidity of extended admissible groups

We introduce the class of extended admissible groups, which include both fundamental groups of non-geometric 3-manifolds and Croke-Kleiner admissible groups. We show that the class of extended admissible groups is quasi-isometrically rigid.

Reaching high accuracy for energetic properties at second-order perturbation cost by merging self-consistency and spin-opposite scaling

Quantum chemical methods dealing with challenging systems while retaining low computational costs have attracted attention. In particular, many efforts have been devoted to developing new methods based on the second-order perturbation that may be the simplest correlated method beyond Hartree-Fock. We have recently developed a self-consistent perturbation theory named one-body Møller-Plesset second-order perturbation theory (OBMP2) and shown that it can resolve issues caused by the non-iterative nature of standard perturbation theory. In the present work, we extend the method by introducing the spin-opposite scaling to the double-excitation amplitudes, resulting in the O2BMP2 method. We assess the O2BMP2 performance on the triple-bond N2 dissociation, singlet-triplet gaps, and ionization potentials. O2BMP2 performs much better than standard MP2 and reaches the accuracy of coupled-cluster methods in all cases considered in this work.

Largest hyperbolic actions of 3--manifold groups

The set of equivalence classes of cobounded actions of a group G on different hyperbolic metric spaces carries a natural partial order. Following Abbott--Balasubramanya--Osin, the group G is H--accessible if the resulting poset has a largest element. In this paper, we prove that every non-geometric 3--manifold has a finite cover with H--inaccessible fundamental group and give conditions under which the fundamental group of the original manifold is H--inaccessible. We also prove that every Croke--Kleiner admissible group (a class of graphs of groups that generalizes fundamental groups of 3--dimensional graph manifolds) has a finite index subgroup that is H--inaccessible.

Property (QT) for 3-manifold groups

According to Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara, a finitely generated group is said to have property (QT) if it acts isometrically on a finite product of quasi-trees so that orbital maps are quasi-isometric embeddings. We prove that the fundamental group $π_1(M)$ of a compact, connected, orientable 3-manifold $M$ has property (QT) if and only if no summand in the sphere-disc decomposition of $M$ supports either Sol or Nil geometry. In particular, all compact, orientable, irreducible 3-manifold groups with nontrivial torus decomposition and not supporting Sol geometry have property (QT). In the course of our study, we establish property (QT) for the class of Croke-Kleiner admissible groups and of relatively hyperbolic groups under natural assumptions has property (QT).

Strongly Quasiconvex subgroups in graphs of groups

Given a graph of groups $\mathcal{G} = (Γ, \{G_v\}, \{G_e\})$ with certain conditions on vertex groups and $G$ acts acylindrically on its Bass-Serre tree $T$. Let $H$ be a finitely generated subgroup of $G$. We prove the following statements equivalence: $H$ has finite height, $(G, T, H)$ is a $A/QI$--triple, $H$ is strongly quasiconvex and virtually free in $G$. We also give a condition to determine whether strong quasiconvexity in a group is preserved under amalgams.

Sublinearly Morse Boundary of CAT(0) admissible groups

We show that if G is an admissible group acting geometrically on a CAT(0) space X, then G is a hierarchically hyperbolic space and with mild assumptions the sublinearly-Morse boundary of the group is a topological model for associated Poisson boundaries .

Croke-Kleiner admissible groups: Property (QT) and quasiconvexity

Croke-Kleiner admissible groups firstly introduced by Croke-Kleiner belong to a particular class of graph of groups which generalize fundamental groups of $3$--dimensional graph manifolds. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a Croke-Kleiner admissible group, acting geometrically on a CAT(0) space $X$, then a finitely generated subgroup of $G$ has finite height if and only if it is strongly quasi-convex. We also show that if $G \curvearrowright X$ is a flip CKA action then $G$ is quasi-isometric embedded into a finite product of quasi-trees. With further assumption on the vertex groups of the flip CKA action $G \curvearrowright X$, we show that $G$ satisfies property (QT) that is introduced by Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara.

Quasiconvexity in $3$-manifold groups

In this paper, we study strongly quasiconvex subgroups in a finitely generated $3$--manifold group $π_1(M)$. We prove that if $M$ is a compact, orientable $3$--manifold that does not have a summand supporting the Sol geometry in its sphere-disc decomposition then a finitely generated subgroup $H \le π_1(M)$ has finite height if and only if $H$ is strongly quasiconvex. On the other hand, if $M$ has a summand supporting the Sol geometry in its sphere-disc decomposition then $π_1(M)$ contains finitely generated, finite height subgroups which are not strongly quasiconvex. We also characterize strongly quasiconvex subgroups of graph manifold groups by using their finite height, their Morse elements, and their actions on the Bass-Serre tree of $π_1(M)$. This result strengthens analogous results in right-angled Artin groups and mapping class groups. Finally, we characterize hyperbolic strongly quasiconvex subgroups of a finitely generated $3$--manifold group $π_1(M)$ by using their undistortedness property and their Morse elements.

Subgroup distortion of 3-manifold groups

In this paper, we compute the subgroup distortion of all finitely generated subgroups of all finitely generated 3-manifold groups, and the subgroup distortion in this case can only be linear, quadratic, exponential and double exponential. It turns out that the subgroup distortion of a subgroup of a 3-manifold group is closely related to the separability of this subgroup.

Distortion of surfaces in 3-manifolds

Let $g \colon S \looparrowright N$ be a properly immersed $π_1$--injective surface in a non-geometric $3$--manifold $N$. We compute the distortion of $π_1(S)$ in $π_1(N)$ and show that how it is related to separability of $π_1(S)$ in $π_1(N)$. The only possibility of the distortion is linear, quadratic, exponential, and double exponential.

On the coarse geometry of certain right-angled Coxeter groups

Let $Γ$ be a connected, triangle-free, planar graph with at least five vertices that has no separating vertices or edges. If the graph $Γ$ is $\mathcal{CFS}$, we prove that the right-angled Coxeter group $G_Γ$ is virtually a Seifert manifold group or virtually a graph manifold group and we give a complete quasi-isometry classification of these such groups. Otherwise, we prove that $G_Γ$ is hyperbolic relative to a collection of $\mathcal{CFS}$ right-angled Coxeter subgroups of $G_Γ$. Consequently, the divergence of $G_Γ$ is linear, or quadratic, or exponential. We also generalize right-angled Coxeter groups which are virtually graph manifold groups to certain high dimensional right-angled Coxeter groups (our families exist in every dimension) and study the coarse geometry of this collection. We prove that strongly quasiconvex torsion free infinite index subgroups in certain graph of groups are free and we apply this result to our right-angled Coxeter groups.

Quasi-isometry of pairs: surfaces in graph manifolds

We show there exists a closed graph manifold $N$ and infinitely many non-separable, horizontal surfaces $\{S_{n} \to N\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ such that there does not exist a quasi-isometry $π_1(N) \to π_1(N)$ taking $π_1(S_{n})$ to $π_1(S_{m})$ within a finite Hausdorff distance when $n \neq m$.
