Determination of the HQET Parameters from the $B \to X_sγ$ Decay

We combine the resummations for radiative corrections and for the heavy quark expansion to study the inclusive radiative decay $B \to X_sγ$. The infrared renormalon ambiguity is also taken into account. Including both theoretical and experimental uncertainties, we determine the allowed domain for the HQET parameters ${\bar Λ}$ and $λ_1$ centered at ${\bar Λ}=0.65$ GeV and $λ_1=-0.71$ GeV$^2$.

CKM Favored Semileptonic Decays of Heavy Hadrons at Zero Recoil

We study the properties of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) favored semileptonic decays of mesons and baryons containing a heavy quark at the point of no recoil. We first use a diagrammatic analysis to rederive the result observed by earlier authors that at this kinematic point the $B$ meson decays via $b\to c$ transitions can only produce a $D$ or $D^*$ meson. The result is generalized to include photon emissions which violate heavy quark flavor symmetry. We show that photons emitted by the heavy quarks and the charged lepton are the only light particles that can decorate the decays $\bar{B}\to D(D^*) + \ellν$ at zero recoil, and the similar processes of heavy baryons. Implications for the determinations of the CKM parameter $V_{cb}$ are discussed. Also studied in this paper is the connection between our diagrammatic analysis of suppression of particle emission and the formal observation based on weak currents at zero recoil being generators of heavy quark symmetry. We show that the two approaches can be unified by considering the Isgur-Wise function in the presence of an external source.

PQCD analysis of inclusive semileptonic decays of B mesons

We develop the perturbative QCD formalism for inclusive semileptonic $B$ meson decays, which includes Sudakov suppression from the resummation of large radiative corrections near the high end of charged lepton energy. Transverse degrees of freedom of partons are introduced to facilitate the factorization of $B$ meson decays. Ambiguities appearing in the quark-level analysis are then avoided. A universal distribution function, arising from the nonperturbative Fermi motion of the $b$ quark, is constructed according to the heavy quark effective field theory based operator product expansion, through which the mean and the width of the distribution function are related to hadronic matrix elements of local operators. Charged lepton spectra of the $B\to X_u\ellν$ decay are presented. We find 50\% suppression near the end point of the spectrum. The overall suppression on the total decay rate is 8\% for the free quark model, and is less than 7\% for the use of smooth distribution functions. With our predictions, it is then possible to extract the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ from experimental data. We also discuss possible implications of our analysis when confronted with the rather small observed semileptonic branching ratio in $B$ meson decays.

Perturbative QCD Analysis of $B$ Meson Decays

Resummation of large QCD radiative corrections, including leading and next-to-leading logarithms, in pion electromagnetic form factor is reviewed. Similar formalism is applied to exclusive processes involving heavy mesons, and leads to Sudakov suppression for the semi-leptonic decay $B\toπlν$. It is found that, with the inclusion of Sudakov effects, perturbative QCD analysis of this decay is possible for the energy fraction of the pion above 0.3. By combining predictions from the soft pion theorems, we estimate that the upper limit of the KM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ is roughly 0.003.

Effective Lagrangian Approach to Weak Radiative Decays of Heavy Hadrons

Motivated by the observation of the decay $\bar{B}\to \bar{K}^*γ$ by CLEO, we have systematically analyzed the two-body weak radiative decays of bottom and charmed hadrons. There exist two types of weak radiative decays: One proceeds through the short-distance $b\to sγ$ transition and the other occurs through $W$-exchange accompanied by a photon emission. Effective Lagrangians are derived for the $W$-exchange bremsstrahlung processes at the quark level and then applied to various weak electromagnetic decays of heavy hadrons. Predictions for the branching ratios of $\bar{B}^0\to D^{*0} γ,~Λ_b^0\toΣ_c^0γ,~Ξ_b^0\to Ξ_c^0γ$ and $Ξ_b^0\to\xip_c^0γ$ are given. In particular, we found ${\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*0}γ)\approx 0.9\times 10^{-6}$. Order of magnitude estimates for the weak radiative decays of charmed hadrons: $~D^0\to \bar{K}^{*0}γ,~Λ_c^+\toΣ^+γ$ and $Ξ_c^0\toΞ^0γ$ are also presented. Within this approach, the decay asymmetry for antitriplet to antitriplet heavy baryon weak radiative transitions is uniquely predicted by heavy quark symmetry. The electromagnetic penguin contribution to $Λ_b^0\toΛγ$ is estimated by two different methods and its branching ratio is found to be of order $1\times 10^{-5}$. We conclude that weak radiative decays of bottom hadrons are dominated by the short-distance $b\to sγ$ mechanism.

Extraction of $V_{ub}$ from the Decay $B\to πl ν$

We develop the perturbative QCD formalism including Sudakov effects for semi-leptonic $B$ meson decays. We evaluate the differential decay rate of $B\to πl ν$, and find that the perturbative calculation is reliable for the energy fraction of the pion above 0.3. Combining predictions from the soft pion theorems, we extract the value of the matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ which is roughly $2.7\times 10^{-3}$.

Corrections to Chiral Dynamics of Heavy Hadrons: SU(3) Symmetry Breaking, (with some minor corrections)

In previous publications we have analyzed the strong and electromagnetic decays of heavy mesons and heavy baryons in a formalism which incorporates heavy-quark and chiral symmetries. There are two possible symmetry-breaking effects on the chiral dynamics of heavy hadrons: the finite-mass effects from light quarks and the $1/ m_Q$ corrections from heavy quarks. In the present paper, chiral-symmetry-breaking effects are studied and applications to various strong and radiative decays of heavy hadrons are illustrated. SU(3) violations induced by chiral loops in the radiative decays of charmed mesons and charmed baryons are compared with those predicted by the constituent quark model. In particular, available data for $D^*$ decays favor values of the parameters in chiral perturbation theory which give predictions for $D^*$ decays close to the quark model results except for the $D^{*+}_s$. Implications are discussed.
