Nonlinear quantum dynamics in a PT-symmetric double well

We investigate the mean-field dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) in a double-well potential with particle gain and loss, rendering the system PT-symmetric. The stationary solutions of the system show a change from elliptically stable behavior to hyperbolically unstable behavior caused by the appearance of PT-broken solutions of the GPE and influenced by the nonlinear interaction. The dynamical behavior is visualized using the Bloch sphere formalism. However, the dynamics is not restricted to the surface of the sphere due to the nonlinear and non-Hermitian nature of the system.

Harmonic inversion analysis of exceptional points in resonance spectra

The spectra of, e.g. open quantum systems are typically given as the superposition of resonances with a Lorentzian line shape, where each resonance is related to a simple pole in the complex energy domain. However, at exceptional points two or more resonances are degenerate and the resulting non-Lorentzian line shapes are related to higher order poles in the complex energy domain. In the Fourier-transform time domain an $n$-th order exceptional point is characterised by a non-exponentially decaying time signal given as the product of an exponential function and a polynomial of degree $n-1$. The complex positions and amplitudes of the non-degenerate resonances can be determined with high accuracy by application of the nonlinear harmonic inversion method to the real-valued resonance spectra. We extend the harmonic inversion method to include the analysis of exceptional points. The technique yields, in the energy domain, the amplitudes of the higher order poles contributing to the spectra, and, in the time domain, the coefficients of the polynomial characterising the non-exponential decay of the time signal. The extended harmonic inversion method is demonstrated on two examples, viz. the analysis of exceptional points in resonance spectra of the hydrogen atom in crossed magnetic and electric fields, and an exceptional point occurring in the dynamics of a single particle in a time-dependent harmonic trap.

A Bose-Einstein Condensate with $\mathcal{PT}$-Symmetric Double-Delta Function Loss and Gain in a Harmonic Trap: A Test of Rigorous Estimates

We consider the linear and nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap with $\cal {PT}$-symmetric double-delta function loss and gain terms. We verify that the conditions for the applicability of a recent proposition by Mityagin and Siegl on singular perturbations of harmonic oscillator type self-adjoint operators are fulfilled. In both the linear and nonlinear case we calculate numerically the shifts of the unperturbed levels with quantum numbers $n$ of up to 89 in dependence on the strength of the non-Hermiticity and compare with rigorous estimates derived by those authors. We confirm that the predicted $1/n^{1/2}$ estimate provides a valid upper bound on the the shrink rate of the numerical eigenvalues. Moreover, we find that a more recent estimate of $\log(n)/n^{3/2}$ is in excellent agreement with the numerical results. With nonlinearity the shrink rates are found to be smaller than without nonlinearity, and the rigorous estimates, derived only for the linear case, are no longer applicable.

Stability of Bose-Einstein condensates in a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric double-$δ$ potential close to branch points

A Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a double-well potential, where atoms are incoupled to one side and extracted from the other, can in the mean-field limit be described by the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric external potential. If the strength of the in- and outcoupling is increased two $\mathcal{PT}$ broken states bifurcate from the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric ground state. At this bifurcation point a stability change of the ground state is expected. However, it is observed that this stability change does not occur exactly at the bifurcation but at a slightly different strength of the in-/outcoupling effect. We investigate a Bose-Einstein condensate in a $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric double-$δ$ potential and calculate the stationary states. The ground state's stability is analysed by means of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and it is shown that the difference in the strength of the in-/outcoupling between the bifurcation and the stability change can be completely explained by the norm-dependency of the nonlinear term in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Eigenvalue structure of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a PT-symmetric double well

We study a Bose-Einstein condensate in a PT-symmetric double-well potential where particles are coherently injected in one well and removed from the other well. In mean-field approximation the condensate is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation thus falling into the category of nonlinear non-Hermitian quantum systems. After extending the concept of PT symmetry to such systems, we apply an analytic continuation to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation from complex to bicomplex numbers and show a thorough numerical investigation of the four-dimensional bicomplex eigenvalue spectrum. The continuation introduces additional symmetries to the system which are confirmed by the numerical calculations and furthermore allows us to analyze the bifurcation scenarios and exceptional points of the system. We present a linear matrix model and show the excellent agreement with our numerical results. The matrix model includes both exceptional points found in the double-well potential, namely an EP2 at the tangent bifurcation and an EP3 at the pitchfork bifurcation. When the two bifurcation points coincide the matrix model possesses four degenerate eigenvectors. Close to that point we observe the characteristic features of four interacting modes in both the matrix model and the numerical calculations, which provides clear evidence for the existence of an EP4.

Hermitian four-well potential as a realization of a PT-symmetric system

A PT-symmetric Bose-Einstein condensate can be theoretically described using a complex optical potential, however, the experimental realization of such an optical potential describing the coherent in- and outcoupling of particles is a nontrivial task. We propose an experiment for a quantum mechanical realization of a PT-symmetric system, where the PT-symmetric currents of a two-well system are implemented by coupling two additional wells to the system, which act as particle reservoirs. In terms of a simple four-mode model we derive conditions under which the two middle wells of the Hermitian four-well system behave exactly as the two wells of the PT-symmetric system. We apply these conditions to calculate stationary solutions and oscillatory dynamics. By means of frozen Gaussian wave packets we relate the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to the four-mode model and give parameters required for the external potential, which provides approximate conditions for a realistic experimental setup.

Bifurcations and exceptional points in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Bose-Einstein condensates are described in a mean-field approach by the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation and exhibit phenomena of nonlinear dynamics. The eigenstates can undergo bifurcations in such a way that two or more eigenvalues and the corresponding wave functions coalesce at critical values of external parameters. E.g. in condensates without long-range interactions a stable and an unstable state are created in a tangent bifurcation when the scattering length of the contact interaction is varied. At the critical point the coalescing states show the properties of an exceptional point. In dipolar condensates fingerprints of a pitchfork bifurcation have been discovered by Rau et al. [Phys. Rev. A, 81:031605(R), 2010]. We present a method to uncover all states participating in a pitchfork bifurcation, and investigate in detail the signatures of exceptional points related to bifurcations in dipolar condensates. For the perturbation by two parameters, viz. the scattering length and a parameter breaking the cylindrical symmetry of the harmonic trap, two cases leading to different characteristic eigenvalue and eigenvector patterns under cyclic variations of the parameters need to be distinguished. The observed structures resemble those of three coalescing eigenfunctions obtained by Demange and Graefe [J. Phys. A, 45:025303, 2012] using perturbation theory for non-Hermitian operators in a linear model. Furthermore, the splitting of the exceptional point under symmetry breaking in either two or three branching singularities is examined. Characteristic features are observed when one, two, or three exceptional points are encircled simultaneously.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates with long-range interaction

The ground state of Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive particle interaction is metastable. One of the decay mechanisms of the condensate is a collapse by macroscopic quantum tunneling, which can be described by the bounce trajectory as solution of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation in imaginary time. For condensates with an electromagnetically induced gravity-like interaction the bounce trajectory is computed with an extended variational approach using coupled Gaussian functions and simulated numerically exact within the mean-field approach on a space-time lattice. It is shown that the variational computations converge very rapidly to the numerically exact result with increasing number of Gaussians. The tunneling rate of the condensate is obtained from the classical action and additional parameters of the bounce trajectory. The converged variational and numerically exact results drastically improve by several orders of magnitude the decay rates obtained previously with a simple variational approach using a single Gaussian-type orbital for the condensate wave function.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a PT symmetric delta-functions double well

The time-independent nonlinear Schrödinger equation is solved for two attractive delta-function shaped potential wells where an imaginary loss term is added in one well, and a gain term of the same size but with opposite sign in the other. We show that for vanishing nonlinearity the model captures all the features known from studies of PT symmetric optical wave guides, e.g., the coalescence of modes in an exceptional point at a critical value of the loss/gain parameter, and the breaking of PT symmetry beyond. With the nonlinearity present, the equation is a model for a Bose-Einstein condensate with loss and gain in a double well potential. We find that the nonlinear Hamiltonian picks as stationary eigenstates exactly such solutions which render the nonlinear Hamiltonian itself PT symmetric, but observe coalescence and bifurcation scenarios different from those known from linear PT symmetric Hamiltonians.

Model of a PT symmetric Bose-Einstein condensate in a delta-functions double well

The observation of PT symmetry in a coupled optical wave guide system that involves a complex refractive index has been demonstrated impressively in the experiment by Rüter el al. (Nat. Phys. 6, 192, 2010). This is, however, only an optical analogue of a quantum system, and it would be highly desirable to observe the manifestation of PT symmetry and the resulting properties also in a real, experimentally accessible, quantum system. Following a suggestion by Klaiman et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 080402, 2008), we investigate a PT symmetric arrangement of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential, where in one well cold atoms are injected while in the other particles are extracted from the condensate. We investigate, in particular, the effects of the nonlinearity in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on the PT properties of the condensate. To study these effects we analyze a simple one-dimensional model system in which the condensate is placed into two PT symmetric delta-function traps. The analysis will serve as a useful guide for studies of the behaviour of Bose-Einstein condensates in realistic PT symmetric double wells.

Fingerprints of exceptional points in the survival probability of resonances in atomic spectra

The unique time signature of the survival probability exactly at the exceptional point parameters is studied here for the hydrogen atom in strong static magnetic and electric fields. We show that indeed the survival probability S(t)=| |^2 decays exactly as |1-a*t|^2 e^(-Gamma_EP*t/hbar) where Gamma_EP is associated with the decay rate at the exceptional point and a is a complex constant depending solely on the initial wave packet that populates exclusively the two almost degenerate states of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. This may open the possibility for a first experimental detection of exceptional points in a quantum system.

First-order corrections to semiclassical Gaussian partition functions for clusters of atoms

Gaussian approximations to the Boltzmann operator have proven themselves in recent years as useful tools for the study of the thermodynamic properties of rare gas clusters. They are, however, not necessarily correct at very low temperatures. In this article we introduce a first-order correction term to the frozen Gaussian imaginary time propagator and apply it to the argon trimer. Our findings show that the correction term provides objective access to the quality of the propagator's results and clearly defines the "best" Gaussian width parameter. The strength of the correction monitored as a function of the temperature indicates that the results of the Gaussian propagator become questionable below a certain temperature. The interesting thermodynamic transition from a bounded trimer to three body dissociation lies in the temperature range for which the Gaussian approximation is predicted to be accurate.

Imaginary time Gaussian dynamics of the Ar_3 cluster

Semiclassical Gaussian approximations to the Boltzmann operator have become an important tool for the investigation of thermodynamic properties of clusters of atoms at low temperatures. Usually, numerically expensive thawed Gaussian variants are applied. In this article, we introduce a numerically much cheaper frozen Gaussian approximation to the imaginary time propagator with a width matrix especially suited for the dynamics of clusters. The quality of the results is comparable to that of thawed Gaussian methods based on the single-particle ansatz. We apply the method to the argon trimer and investigate the dissociation process of the cluster. The results clearly show a classical-like transition from a bounded moiety to three free particles at a temperature T ~ 20 K, whereas previous studies of the system were not able to resolve this transition. Quantum effects, i.e., differences with the purely classical case manifest themselves in the low-temperature behavior of the mean energy and specific heat as well as in a slight shift of the transition temperature. We also discuss the influence of an artificial confinement of the atoms usually introduced to converge numerical computations. The results show that restrictive confinements often implemented in studies of clusters can influence the thermodynamic properties drastically. This finding may have implications on other studies of atomic clusters.

Variational methods with coupled Gaussian functions for Bose-Einstein condensates with long-range interactions. II. Applications

Bose-Einstein condensates with an attractive 1/r interaction and with dipole-dipole interaction are investigated in the framework of the Gaussian variational ansatz introduced by S. Rau, J. Main, and G. Wunner [Phys. Rev. A, submitted]. We demonstrate that the method of coupled Gaussian wave packets is a full-fledged alternative to direct numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, or even superior in that coupled Gaussians are capable of producing both, stable and unstable states of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and thus of giving access to yet unexplored regions of the space of solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. As an alternative to numerical solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, the stability of the stationary condensate wave functions is investigated by analyzing the stability properties of the dynamical equations of motion for the Gaussian variational parameters in the local vicinity of the stationary fixed points. For blood-cell-shaped dipolar condensates it is shown that on the route to collapse the condensate passes through a pitchfork bifurcation, where the ground state itself turns unstable, before it finally vanishes in a tangent bifurcation.

Resonance wave functions located at the Stark saddle point

We calculate quantum mechanically exact wave functions of resonances in spectra of the hydrogen atom in crossed external fields and prove the existence of long-lived decaying quantum states localized at the Stark saddle point. A spectrum of ground and excited states reproducing the nodal patterns expected from simple quadratic and cubic expansions of the potential in the vicinity of the saddle point can be identified. The results demonstrate the presence of resonances in the vicinity of the saddle predicted by simple approximations.

Exceptional points in the spectra of atoms in external fields

We investigate exceptional points, which are branch point singularities of two resonance eigenstates, in spectra of the hydrogen atom in crossed external electric and magnetic fields. A procedure to systematically search for exceptional points is presented, and their existence is proven. The properties of the branch point singularities are discussed with effective low-dimensional matrix models, their relation with avoided level crossings is analyzed, and their influence on dipole matrix elements and the photoionization cross section is investigated. Furthermore, the rare case of a connection between three resonances almost forming a triple-degeneracy in the form of a cubic root branch point is discussed.

Signatures of the classical transition state in atomic quantum spectra

We perform quantum mechanically exact calculations of resonances in the spectrum of the hydrogen atom in crossed external fields and establish a close connection between the classical transition state in phase space and features in the quantum spectrum. By varying the external field strengths, structures are revealed which are surprisingly similar to the quantized energy levels of the classical electron motion in the vicinity of the saddle point obtained with an approximation of the potential. The results give clear evidence for signatures of the transition state in quantum spectra.

Bifurcations, order, and chaos in the Bose-Einstein condensation of dipolar gases

We apply a variational technique to solve the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation for Bose-Einstein condensates in which an additional dipole-dipole interaction between the atoms is present with the goal of modelling the dynamics of such condensates. We show that universal stability thresholds for the collapse of the condensates correspond to bifurcation points where always two stationary solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation disappear in a tangent bifurcation, one dynamically stable and the other unstable. We point out that the thresholds also correspond to "exceptional points," i.e. branching singularities of the Hamiltonian. We analyse the dynamics of excited condensate wave functions via Poincare surfaces of section for the condensate parameters and find both regular and chaotic motion, corresponding to (quasi-) periodically oscillating and irregularly fluctuating condensates, respectively. Stable islands are found to persist up to energies well above the saddle point of the mean-field energy, alongside with collapsing modes. The results are applicable when the shape of the condensate is axisymmetric.
