The Mott metal-insulator transition in the 1D Hubbard model in an external magnetic field

We study the low energy behavior of the one dimensional Hubbard model across the Mott metal-insulator phase transition in an external magnetic field. In particular we calculate elements of the dressed charge matrix at the critical point of the Mott transition for arbitrary Hubbard repulsion and magnetization numerically and, in certain limiting cases, analytically. These results are combined with a non-perturbative effective field theory approach to reveal how the breaking of time reversal symmetry influences the Mott transition.

Interplay between a quantum impurity and a boundary field in the SUSY t-J model

We study the role of bound states appearing in different formulations of the Bethe ansatz for the supersymmetric t-J model with a boundary potential and an integrable impurity. For special values of the parameters describing the boundary and the impurity the charge fluctuations at the latter vanish. The population of the bound states selects different sectors of the impurity levels leading to integrable Kondo impurities.

Fermi Edge Singularities in Transport through Quantum Dots

We study the Fermi-edge singularity appearing in the current-voltage characteristics for resonant tunneling through a localized level at finite temperature. An explicit expression for the current at low temperature and near the threshold for the tunneling process is presented which allows to coalesce data taken at different temperatures to a single curve. Based on this scaling function for the current we analyze experimental data from a GaAs-AlAs-GaAs tunneling device with embedded InAs quantum dots obtained at low temperatures in high magnetic fields.

Anderson-like impurity in the one-dimensional t-J model: formation of local states and magnetic behaviour

We consider an integrable model describing an Anderson-like impurity coupled to an open $t$--$J$ chain. Both the hybridization (i.e. its coupling to bulk chain) and the local spectrum can be controlled without breaking the integrability of the model. As the hybridization is varied, holon and spinon bound states appear in the many body ground state. Based on the exact solution we study the state of the impurity and its contribution to thermodynamic quantities as a function of an applied magnetic field. Kondo behaviour in the magnetic response of the impurity can be observed provided that its parameters have been adjusted properly to the energy scales of the holon and spinon excitations of the one-dimensional bulk.

Surface free energy for systems with integrable boundary conditions

The surface free energy is the difference between the free energies for a system with open boundary conditions and the same system with periodic boundary conditions. We use the quantum transfer matrix formalism to express the surface free energy in the thermodynamic limit of systems with integrable boundary conditions as a matrix element of certain projection operators. Specializing to the XXZ spin 1/2 chain we introduce a novel `finite temperature boundary operator' which characterizes the thermodynamical properties of surfaces related to integrable boundary conditions.

Correlation functions of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

We calculate the asymptotic behaviour of correlation functions as a function of the microscopic parameters for a Bose-Fermi mixture with repulsive interaction in one dimension. For two cases, namely polarized and unpolarized fermions the singularities of the momentum distribution functions are characterized as a function of the coupling constant and the relative density of bosons.

Continuum Limit of the Integrable sl(2/1) 3-\bar{3} Superspin Chain

By a combination of analytical and numerical techniques, we analyze the continuum limit of the integrable 3\otimes\bar{3}\otimes 3\otimes\bar{3}... sl(2/1) superspin chain. We discover profoundly new features, including a continuous spectrum of conformal weights, whose numerical evidence is infinite degeneracies of the scaled gaps in the thermodynamic limit. This indicates that the corresponding conformal field theory has a non compact target space (even though our lattice model involves only finite dimensional representations). We argue that our results are compatible with this theory being the level k=1, `SU(2/1) WZW model' (whose precise definition requires some care). In doing so, we establish several new results for this model. With regard to potential applications to the spin quantum Hall effect, we conclude that the continuum limit of the 3\otimes\bar{3}\otimes 3\otimes\bar{3}... sl(2/1) integrable superspin chain is {\sl not} the same as (and is in fact very different from) the continuum limit of the corresponding chain with two-superspin interactions only, which is known to be a model for the spin quantum Hall effect. The study of possible RG flows between the two theories is left for further study.

Electronic Ladders with SO(5) Symmetry: Phase Diagrams and Correlations at half-filling

We construct a family of electronic ladder models with SO(5) symmetry which have exact ground states in the form of finitely correlated wave functions. Extensions for these models preserving this symmetry are studied using these states in a variational approach. Within this approach, the zero temperature phase diagram of these electronic ladders at half filling is obtained, reproducing the known results in the weak coupling (band insulator) and strong coupling regime, first studied by Scalapino, Zhang and Hanke. Finally, the compact form of the variational wave functions allows to compute various correlation functions for these systems.

Phase diagram of an exactly solvable t-J ladder model

We study a system of one-dimensional t-J models coupled to a ladder system. A special choice of the interaction between neighbouring rungs leads to an integrable model with supersymmetry, which is broken by the presence of rung interactions. We analyze the spectrum of low-lying excitations and ground state phase diagram at zero temperature.

Magnetic properties of doped Heisenberg chains

The magnetic susceptibility of systems from a class of integrable models for doped spin-$S$ Heisenberg chains is calculated in the limit of vanishing magnetic field. For small concentrations $x_h$ of the mobile spin-$(S-1/2)$ charge carriers we find an explicit expression for the contribution of the gapless mode associated to the magnetic degrees of freedom of these holes to the susceptibility which exhibits a singularity for $x_h\to0$ for sufficiently large $S$. We prove a sum rule for the contributions of the two gapless magnetic modes in the system to the susceptibility which holds for arbitrary hole concentration. This sum rule complements the one for the low temperature specific heat which has been obtained previously.

A note on density correlations in the half-filled Hubbard model

We consider density-density correlations in the one-dimensional Hubbard model at half filling. On intuitive grounds one might expect them to exhibit an exponential decay. However, as has been noted recently, this is not obvious from the Bethe Ansatz/conformal field theory (BA/CFT) approach. We show that by supplementing the BA/CFT analysis with simple symmetry arguments one can easily prove that correlations of the lattice density operators decay exponentially.

Doping Induced Magnetization Plateaus

The low temperature magnetization process of antiferromagnetic spin-S chains doped with mobile spin-(S-1/2) carriers is studied in an exactly solvable model. For sufficiently high magnetic fields the system is in a metallic phase with a finite gap for magnetic excitations. In this phase which exists for a large range of carrier concentrations x the zero temperature magnetization is determined by x alone. This leads to plateaus in the magnetization curve at a tunable fraction of the saturation magnetization. The critical behaviour at the edges of these plateaus is studied in detail.

Tunneling singularities in the open Hubbard chain

We study singularities in the I-V characteristics for sequential tunneling from resonant localized levels (e.g. a quantum dot) into a one dimensional electron system described by a Hubbard model. Boundary conformal field theory together with the exact solution of the Hubbard model subject to boundary fields allows to compute the exponents describing the singularity arising when the energy of the local level is tuned through the Fermi energy of the wire as a function of electron density and magnetic field. For boundary potentials with bound states a sequence of such singularities can be observed.

Doped Heisenberg chains: spin-S generalizations of the supersymmetric t-J model

A family of exactly solvable models describing a spin-S Heisenberg chain doped with mobile spin-(S-1/2) carriers is constructed from gl(2|1)-invariant solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. The models are generalizations of the supersymmetric t-J model which is obtained for S=1/2. We solve the model by means of the algebraic Bethe Ansatz and present results for the zero temperature and thermodynamic properties. At low temperatures the models show spin charge separation, i.e. contain contributions of a free bosonic theory in the charge sector and an SU(2)-invariant theory describing the magnetic excitations. For small carrier concentration the latter can be decomposed further into an SU(2) level-2S Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten model and the minimal unitary model M_p with p=2S+1.

Open t-J chain with boundary impurities

We study integrable boundary conditions for the supersymmetric t-J model of correlated electrons which arise when combining static scattering potentials with dynamical impurities carrying an internal degree of freedom. The latter differ from the bulk sites by allowing for double occupation of the local orbitals. The spectrum of the resulting Hamiltonians is obtained by means of the algebraic Bethe Ansatz.

A generalized spin ladder in a magnetic field

We study the phase diagram of coupled spin-1/2 chains with bilinear and (chiral) three-spin exchange interactions in a magnetic field. The model is soluble on a one-parametric line in the space of coupling constants connecting the limiting cases of a single and two decoupled Heisenberg chains with nearest neighbour exchange only. We give a complete classification of the low-energy properties of the integrable system and introduce a numerical method which allows to study the possible phases of spin ladder systems away from the soluble line in a magnetic field.

New solutions to the Reflection Equation and the projecting method

New integrable boundary conditions for integrable quantum systems can be constructed by tuning of scattering phases due to reflection at a boundary and an adjacent impurity and subsequent projection onto sub-spaces. We illustrate this mechanism by considering a gl(m<n)-impurity attached to an open gl(n)-invariant quantum chain and a Kondo spin S coupled to the supersymmetric t-J model.
