Neutrino interactions with a weak slowly varying electromagnetic field

We derive the effective action for processes involving two neutrinos and two photons at energies much below the electron mass. We discuss several applications in which one or both photons are replaced by external fields. In particular, Cherenkov radiation and neutrino pair production in weak external fields are investigated for massive Dirac neutrinos.

QED Effective Action at Finite Temperature: Two-Loop Dominance

We calculate the two-loop effective action of QED for arbitrary constant electromagnetic fields at finite temperature T in the limit of T much smaller than the electron mass. It is shown that in this regime the two-loop contribution always exceeds the influence of the one-loop part due to the thermal excitation of the internal photon. As an application, we study light propagation and photon splitting in the presence of a magnetic background field at low temperature. We furthermore discover a thermally induced contribution to pair production in electric fields.

Light Cone Condition for a Thermalized QED Vacuum

Within the QED effective action approach, we study the propagation of low-frequency light at finite temperature. Starting from a general effective Lagrangian for slowly varying fields whose structure is solely dictated by Lorentz covariance and gauge invariance, we derive the light cone condition for light propagating in a thermalized QED vacuum. As an application, we calculate the velocity shifts, i.e., refractive indices of the vacuum, induced by thermalized fermions to one loop. We investigate various temperature domains and also include a background magnetic field. While low-temperature effects to one loop are exponentially damped by the electron mass, there exists a maximum velocity shift of $-δv^2_{max}=α/(3π)$ in the intermediate-temperature domain $T\sim m$.

QED effective action at finite temperature

The QED effective Lagrangian in the presence of an arbitrary constant electromagnetic background field at finite temperature is derived in the imaginary-time formalism to one-loop order. The boundary conditions in imaginary time reduce the set of gauge transformations of the background field, which allows for a further gauge invariant and puts restrictions on the choice of gauge. The additional invariant enters the effective action by a topological mechanism and can be identified with a chemical potential; it is furthermore related to Debye screening. In concordance with the real-time formalism, we do not find a thermal correction to Schwinger's pair-production formula. The calculation is performed on a maximally Lorentz covariant and gauge invariant stage.

Applications of the Light Cone Condition for various perturbed Vacua

We examine the propagation of light in the presence of various modifications of the QED vacuum in the limit of low frequency. A polarization summed and direction averaged-light cone condition is derived from the equation of motion which arises from the effective QED action. Several applications are given concerning vacuum modifications caused by, e.g., strong fields, Casimir systems and finite temperature.

Light propagation in non-trivial QED vacua

Within the framework of effective action QED, we derive the light cone condition for homogeneous non-trivial QED vacua in the geometric optics approximation. Our result generalizes the ``unified formula'' suggested by Latorre, Pascual and Tarrach and allows for the calculation of velocity shifts and refractive indices for soft photons travelling through these vacua. Furthermore, we clarify the connection between the light velocity shift and the scale anomaly. This study motivates the introduction of a so-called effective action charge that characterizes the velocity modifying properties of the vacuum. Several applications are given concerning vacuum modifications caused by, e.g., strong fields, Casimir systems and high temperature.

Light Propagation in Non-Trivial QED Vacua

Within the geometric optics approximation, we derive the light cone condition for a class of homogeneous non-trivial QED vacua using the effective action approach. Our result generalizes the ``unified formula'' suggested by Latorre, Pascual and Tarrach which turns out to be a low-energy limit. We calculate the velocity shifts induced by electromagnetic fields and finite temperature and especially analyze the high-energy limit consistent with the loop approximation.

Flavor Condensate and Vacuum (In-)Stability in QED_(2+1)

In this letter we study (2+1)-dimensional QED. The first part contains the computation of the flavor symmetry-breaking condensate and its relation to the trace of the energy-momentum tensor, while the second part is concerned with the computation of the effective action allowing for non-constant static external magnetic fields. We do not find that space derivatives in the magnetic field lower the energy of the ground state as compared to a constant field configuration.

Analytical results for the confinement mechanism in QCD_3

We present analytical methods for investigating the interaction of two heavy quarks in QCD_3 using the effective action approach. Our findings result in explicit expressions for the static potentials in QCD_3 for long and short distances. With regard to confinement, our conclusion reflects many features found in the more realistic world of QCD_4.

Short Distance Behavior of (2+1)-dimensional QCD

Within the framework of semiclassical QCD approximations the short distance behavior of two static color charges in (2+1)-dimensional QCD is discussed. A classical linearization of the field equations is exhibited and leads to analytical results producing the static potential. Beyond the dominant classical part proportional to ln lambda R, QCD contributions of order R^1/2 and R are found.
