On the analytic non-integrability of the Rattleback problem

We establish the analytic non-integrability of the nonholonomic ellipsoidal rattleback model for a large class of parameter values. Our approach is based on the study of the monodromy group of the normal variational equations around a particular orbit. The embedding of the equations of the heavy rigid body into the rattleback model is discussed.

Geodesics on the Ellipsoid and Monodromy

The equations for geodesic flow on the ellipsoid are well known, and were first solved by Jacobi in 1838 by separating the variables of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In 1979 Moser investigated the case of the general ellipsoid with distinct semi-axes and described a set of integrals which weren't know classically. After reviewing the properties of geodesic flow on the three dimensional ellipsoid with distinct semi-axes, we investigate the three dimensional ellipsoid with the two middle semi-axes being equal, corresponding to a Hamiltonian invariant under rotations. The system is Liouville-integrable and thus the invariant manifolds corresponding to regular points of the energy momentum map are 3-dimensional tori. An analysis of the critical points of the energy momentum maps gives the bifurcation diagram. We find the fibres of the critical values of the energy momentum map, and carry out an analysis of the action variables. We show that the obstruction to the existence of single valued globally smooth action variables is monodromy.

Extended phase diagram of the Lorenz model

The parameter dependence of the various attractive solutions of the three variable nonlinear Lorenz model equations for thermal convection in Rayleigh-Bénard flow is studied. Its bifurcation structure has commonly been investigated as a function of r, the normalized Rayleigh number, at fixed Prandtl number σ. The present work extends the analysis to the entire (r,σ) parameter plane. An onion like periodic pattern is found which is due to the alternating stability of symmetric and non-symmetric periodic orbits. This periodic pattern is explained by considering non-trivial limits of large r and σ. In addition to the limit which was previously analyzed by Sparrow, we identify two more distinct asymptotic regimes in which either σ/r or σ^2/r is constant. In both limits the dynamics is approximately described by Airy functions whence the periodicity in parameter space can be calculated analytically. Furthermore, some observations about sequences of bifurcations and coexistence of attractors, periodic as well as chaotic, are reported.

Symbolic Codes for Rotational Orbits

Symbolic codes for rotational orbits and "islands-around-islands" are constructed for the quadratic, area-preserving Henon map. The codes are based upon continuation from an anti-integrable limit, or alternatively from the horseshoe. Given any sequence of rotation numbers we obtain symbolic sequences for the corresponding elliptic and hyperbolic rotational orbits. These are shown to be consistent with numerical evidence. The resulting symbolic partition of the phase space consists of wedges constructed from images of the symmetry lines of the map.

A new integrable system on the sphere

We present a new Liouville-integrable natural Hamiltonian system on the (cotangent bundle of the) two-dimensional sphere. The second integral is cubic in the momenta.

Vanishing Twist near Focus-Focus Points

We show that near a focus-focus point in a Liouville integrable Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom lines of locally constant rotation number in the image of the energy-momentum map are spirals determined by the eigenvalue of the equilibrium. From this representation of the rotation number we derive that the twist condition for the isoenergetic KAM condition vanishes on a curve in the image of the energy-momentum map that is transversal to the line of constant energy. In contrast to this we also show that the frequency map is non-degenerate for every point in a neighborhood of a focus-focus point.

Vanishing Twist in the Hamiltonian Hopf Bifurcation

The Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation has an integrable normal form that describes the passage of the eigenvalues of an equilibrium through the 1: -1 resonance. At the bifurcation the pure imaginary eigenvalues of the elliptic equilibrium turn into a complex quadruplet of eigenvalues and the equilibrium becomes a linearly unstable focus-focus point. We explicitly calculate the frequency map of the integrable normal form, in particular we obtain the rotation number as a function on the image of the energy-momentum map in the case where the fibres are compact. We prove that the isoenergetic non-degeneracy condition of the KAM theorem is violated on a curve passing through the focus-focus point in the image of the energy-momentum map. This is equivalent to the vanishing of twist in a Poincaré map for each energy near that of the focus-focus point. In addition we show that in a family of periodic orbits (the non-linear normal modes) the twist also vanishes. These results imply the existence of all the unusual dynamical phenomena associated to non-twist maps near the Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation.

(Vanishing) Twist in the Saddle-Centre and Period-Doubling Bifurcation

The lowest order resonant bifurcations of a periodic orbit of a Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom have frequency ratio 1:1 (saddle-centre) and 1:2 (period-doubling). The twist, which is the derivative of the rotation number with respect to the action, is studied near these bifurcations. When the twist vanishes the nondegeneracy condition of the (isoenergetic) KAM theorem is not satisfied, with interesting consequences for the dynamics. We show that near the saddle-centre bifurcation the twist always vanishes. At this bifurcation a ``twistless'' torus is created, when the resonance is passed. The twistless torus replaces the colliding periodic orbits in phase space. We explicitly derive the position of the twistless torus depending on the resonance parameter, and show that the shape of this curve is universal. For the period doubling bifurcation the situation is different. Here we show that the twist does not vanish in a neighborhood of the bifurcation.

About ergodicity in the family of limacon billiards

By continuation from the hyperbolic limit of the cardioid billiard we show that there is an abundance of bifurcations in the family of limacon billiards. The statistics of these bifurcation shows that the size of the stable intervals decreases with approximately the same rate as their number increases with the period. In particular, we give numerical evidence that arbitrarily close to the cardioid there are elliptic islands due to orbits created in saddle node bifurcations. This shows explicitly that if in this one parameter family of maps ergodicity occurs for more than one parameter the set of these parameter values has a complicated structure.

An Integrable Shallow Water Equation with Linear and Nonlinear Dispersion

We study a class of 1+1 quadratically nonlinear water wave equations that combines the linear dispersion of the Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation with the nonlinear/nonlocal dispersion of the Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, yet still preserves integrability via the inverse scattering transform (IST) method. This IST-integrable class of equations contains both the KdV equation and the CH equation as limiting cases. It arises as the compatibility condition for a second order isospectral eigenvalue problem and a first order equation for the evolution of its eigenfunctions. This integrable equation is shown to be a shallow water wave equation derived by asymptotic expansion at one order higher approximation than KdV. We compare its traveling wave solutions to KdV solitons.

Triaxial Ellipsoidal Quantum Billiards

The classical mechanics, exact quantum mechanics and semiclassical quantum mechanics of the billiard in the triaxial ellipsoid is investigated. The system is separable in ellipsoidal coordinates. A smooth description of the motion is given in terms of a geodesic flow on a solid torus, which is a fourfold cover of the interior of the ellipsoid. Two crossing separatrices lead to four generic types of motion. The action variables of the system are integrals of a single Abelian differential of second kind on a hyperelliptic curve of genus 2. The classical separability carries over to quantum mechanics giving two versions of generalized Lam{é} equations according to the two sets of classical coordinates. The quantum eigenvalues define a lattice when transformed to classical action space. Away from the separatrix surfaces the lattice is given by EBK quantization rules for the four types of classical motion. The transition between the four lattices is described by a uniform semiclassical quantization scheme based on a WKB ansatz. The tunneling between tori is given by penetration integrals which again are integrals of the same Abelian differential that gives the classical action variables. It turns out that the quantum mechanics of ellipsoidal billiards is semiclassically most elegantly explained by the investigation of its hyperelliptic curve and the real and purely imaginary periods of a single Abelian differential.

Linear stability in billiards with potential

A general formula for the linearized Poincaré map of a billiard with a potential is derived. The stability of periodic orbits is given by the trace of a product of matrices describing the piecewise free motion between reflections and the contributions from the reflections alone. For the case without potential this gives well known formulas. Four billiards with potentials for which the free motion is integrable are treated as examples: The linear gravitational potential, the constant magnetic field, the harmonic potential, and a billiard in a rotating frame of reference, imitating the restricted three body problem. The linear stability of periodic orbits with period one and two is analyzed with the help of stability diagrams, showing the essential parameter dependence of the residue of the periodic orbits for these examples.

Inflation of Hamiltonian System: The Spinning Top in Projective Space

We present a method to enlarge the phase space of a canonical Hamiltonian System in order to remove coordinate singularities arising from a nontrivial topology of the configuration space. This ``inflation'' preserves the canonical structure of the system and generates new constants of motion that realize the constraints. As a first illustrative example the spherical pendulum is inflated by embedding the sphere $S^2$ in the three dimensional Euclidean space. The main application which motivated this work is the derivation of a canonical singularity free Hamiltonian for the general spinning top. The configuration space $SO(3)$ is diffeomorphic to the real projective space $\RP^3$ which is embedded in four dimensions using homogenous coordinates. The procedure can be generalized to $SO(n)$.

Topology of energy surfaces and existence of transversal Poincaré sections

Two questions on the topology of compact energy surfaces of natural two degrees of freedom Hamiltonian systems in a magnetic field are discussed. We show that the topology of this 3-manifold (if it is not a unit tangent bundle) is uniquely determined by the Euler characteristic of the accessible region in configuration space. In this class of 3-manifolds for most cases there does not exist a transverse and complete Poincaré section. We show that there are topological obstacles for its existence such that only in the cases of $S^1\times S^2$ and $T^3$ such a Poincaré section can exist.
