Assembly maps for topological cyclic homology of group algebras

We use assembly maps to study $\mathbf{TC}(\mathbb{A}[G];p)$, the topological cyclic homology at a prime $p$ of the group algebra of a discrete group $G$ with coefficients in a connective ring spectrum $\mathbb{A}$. For any finite group, we prove that the assembly map for the family of cyclic subgroups is an isomorphism on homotopy groups. For infinite groups, we establish pro-isomorphism, (split) injectivity, and rational injectivity results, as well as counterexamples to injectivity and surjectivity. In particular, for hyperbolic groups and for virtually finitely generated abelian groups, we show that the assembly map for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups is injective but in general not surjective.

Algebraic K-theory of group rings and the cyclotomic trace map

We prove that the Farrell-Jones assembly map for connective algebraic K-theory is rationally injective, under mild homological finiteness conditions on the group and assuming that a weak version of the Leopoldt-Schneider conjecture holds for cyclotomic fields. This generalizes a result of Bökstedt, Hsiang, and Madsen, and leads to a concrete description of a large direct summand of $K_n(\mathbb{Z}[G])\otimes_{\mathbb{Z}}\mathbb{Q}$ in terms of group homology. In many cases the number theoretic conjectures are true, so we obtain rational injectivity results about assembly maps, in particular for Whitehead groups, under homological finiteness assumptions on the group only. The proof uses the cyclotomic trace map to topological cyclic homology, Bökstedt-Hsiang-Madsen's functor C, and new general isomorphism and injectivity results about the assembly maps for topological Hochschild homology and C.

On the Adams isomorphism for equivariant orthogonal spectra

We give a natural construction and a direct proof of the Adams isomorphism for equivariant orthogonal spectra. More precisely, for any finite group G, any normal subgroup N of G, and any orthogonal G-spectrum X, we construct a natural map A of orthogonal G/N-spectra from the homotopy N-orbits of X to the derived N-fixed points of X, and we show that A is a stable weak equivalence if X is cofibrant and N-free. This recovers a theorem of Lewis, May, and Steinberger in the equivariant stable homotopy category, which in the case of suspension spectra was originally proved by Adams. We emphasize that our Adams map A is natural even before passing to the homotopy category. One of the tools we develop is a replacement-by-Omega-spectra construction with good functorial properties, which we believe is of independent interest.

Algebraic K-theory over the infinite dihedral group: a controlled topology approach

We use controlled topology applied to the action of the infinite dihedral group on a partially compactified plane and deduce two consequences for algebraic K-theory. The first is that the family in the K-theoretic Farrell-Jones conjecture can be reduced to only those virtually cyclic groups which admit a surjection with finite kernel onto a cyclic group. The second is that the Waldhausen Nil groups for a group which maps epimorphically onto the infinite dihedral group can be computed in terms of the Farrell-Bass Nil groups of the index two subgroup which maps surjectively to the infinite cyclic group.

Equivariant covers for hyperbolic groups

We prove an equivariant version of the fact that word-hyperbolic groups have finite asymptotic dimension. This is important in connection with our forthcoming proof of the Farrell-Jones conjecture in algebraic K-theory for every word-hyperbolic group G and every coefficient ring R.

On the Farrell-Jones Conjecture and its applications

We present the status of the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for algebraic K-theory for a group G and arbitrary coefficient rings R. We add new groups for which the conjecture is known to be true and study inheritance properties. We discuss new applications, focussing on the Bass Conjecture, the Kaplansky Conjecture and conjectures generalizing Moody's Induction Theorem. Thus we extend the class of groups for which these conjectures are known considerably.

Coefficients for the Farrell-Jones Conjecture

We introduce the Farrell-Jones Conjecture with coefficients in an additive category with G-action. This is a variant of the Farrell-Jones Conjecture about the algebraic K- or L-Theory of a group ring RG. It allows to treat twisted group rings and crossed product rings. The conjecture with coefficients is stronger than the original conjecture but it has better inheritance properties. Since known proofs using controlled algebra carry over to the set-up with coefficients we obtain new results about the original Farrell-Jones Conjecture. The conjecture with coefficients implies the fibered version of the Farrell-Jones Conjecture.

Detecting K-theory by cyclic homology

We discuss which part of the rationalized algebraic K-theory of a group ring is detected via trace maps to Hochschild homology, cyclic homology, periodic cyclic or negative cyclic homology.

Commuting homotopy limits and smash products

In general the processes of taking a homotopy inverse limit of a diagram of spectra and smashing spectra with a fixed space do not commute. In this paper we investigate under what additional assumptions these two processes do commute. In fact we deal with an equivariant generalization which involves spectra and smash products over the orbit category of a discrete group. Such a situation naturally occurs if one studies the equivariant homology theory associated to topological cyclic homology. The main theorem of this paper will play a role in the generalization of the results obtained by Boekstedt, Hsiang and Madsen about the algebraic K-theory Novikov Conjecture to the assembly map for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups.

On the Isomorphism Conjecture in algebraic K-theory

The Isomorphism Conjecture is a conceptional approach towards a calculation of the algebraic K-theory of a group ring RG, where G is an infinite group. In this paper we prove the conjecture in dimensions n<2 for fundamental groups of closed Riemannian manifolds with strictly negative sectional curvature and an arbitrary coefficient ring R. If R is regular this leads to a concrete calculation of low dimensional K-theory groups of RG in terms of the K-theory of R and the homology of the group.
