Hénon maps with many rational periodic points

Building on work of Doyle and Hyde on polynomial maps in one variable, we produce for each odd integer $d \geq 2$ a Hénon map of degree $d$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with at least $(d-4)^2$ integral periodic points. This provides a quadratic lower bound on any conjectural uniform bound for periodic rational points of Hénon maps. In contrast with the work of Doyle and Hyde, our examples also admit integer cycles of large period.

Birational maps with transcendental dynamical degree

We give examples of birational selfmaps of $\mathbb{P}^d, d \geq 3$, whose dynamical degree is a transcendental number. This contradicts a conjecture by Bellon and Viallet. The proof uses a combination of techniques from algebraic dynamics and diophantine approximation.

Common preperiodic points for quadratic polynomials

Let $f_c(z) = z^2+c$ for $c \in \mathbb{C}$. We show there exists a uniform bound on the number of points in $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})$ that can be preperiodic for both $f_{c_1}$ and $f_{c_2}$ with $c_1\not= c_2$ in $\mathbb{C}$. The proof combines arithmetic ingredients with complex-analytic; we estimate an adelic energy pairing when the parameters lie in $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$, building on the quantitative arithmetic equidistribution theorem of Favre and Rivera-Letelier, and we use distortion theorems in complex analysis to control the size of the intersection of distinct Julia sets. The proof is effective, and we provide explicit constants for each of the results.

Uniform Manin-Mumford for a family of genus 2 curves

We introduce a general strategy for proving quantitative and uniform bounds on the number of common points of height zero for a pair of inequivalent height functions on $\mathbb{P}^1(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}).$ We apply this strategy to prove a conjecture of Bogomolov, Fu, and Tschinkel asserting uniform bounds on the number of common torsion points of elliptic curves in the case of two Legendre curves over $\mathbb{C}$. As a consequence, we obtain two uniform bounds for a two-dimensional family of genus 2 curves: a uniform Manin-Mumford bound for the family over $\mathbb{C}$, and a uniform Bogomolov bound for the family over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}.$

Arboreal representations for rational maps with few critical points

Jones conjectures the arboreal representation of a degree two rational map will have finite index in the full automorphism group of a binary rooted tree except under certain conditions. We prove a version of Jones' Conjecture for quadratic and cubic polynomials assuming the $abc$-Conjecture and Vojta's Conjecture. We also exhibit a family of degree $2$ rational maps and give examples of degree $3$ polynomial maps whose arboreal representations have finite index in the appropriate group of tree automorphisms.

Reduction of dynatomic curves

The dynatomic modular curves parametrize polynomial maps together with a point of period $n$. It is known that the dynatomic curves $Y_1(n)$ are smooth and irreducible in characteristic 0 for families of polynomial maps of the form $f_c(z) = z^m +c$ where $m\geq 2$. In the present paper, we build on the work of Morton to partially characterize the primes $p$ for which the reduction modulo $p$ of $Y_1(n)$ remains smooth and/or irreducible. As an application, we give new examples of good reduction of $Y_1(n)$ for several primes dividing the ramification discriminant when $n=7,8,11$. The proofs involve arithmetic and complex dynamics, reduction theory for curves, ramification theory, and the combinatorics of the Mandelbrot set.

Bounded height in families of dynamical systems

Let a and b be algebraic numbers such that exactly one of a and b is an algebraic integer, and let f_t(z):=z^2+t be a family of polynomials parametrized by t. We prove that the set of all algebraic numbers t for which there exist positive integers m and n such that f_t^m(a)=f_t^n(b) has bounded Weil height. This is a special case of a more general result supporting a new bounded height conjecture in dynamics. Our results fit into the general setting of the principle of unlikely intersections in arithmetic dynamics.

Cohomological conditions on endomorphisms of projective varieties

We characterize possible periodic subvarieties for surjective endomorphisms of complex abelian varieties in terms of the eigenvalues of the cohomological actions induced by the endomorphisms, extending previous work in this direction by Pink and Roessler. By applying our characterization to induced endomorphisms on Albanese varieties, we draw conclusions about the dynamics of surjective endomorphisms for a broad class of projective varieties. We also analyze several classes of surjective endomorphisms that are distinguished by properties of their cohomological actions.

The Dynamical Andre-Oort Conjecture: Unicritical Polynomials

We establish the equidistribution with respect to the bifurcation measure of post-critically finite maps in any one-dimensional algebraic family of unicritical polynomials. Using this equidistribution result, together with a combinatorial analysis of certain algebraic correspondences on the complement of the Mandelbrot set $M_2$ (or generalized Mandelbrot set $M_d$ for degree $d>2$), we classify all complex plane curves $C$ with Zariski-dense subsets of points $(a,b)\in C$, such that both $z^d+a$ and $z^d+b$ are simultaneously post-critically finite for a fixed degree $d\geq 2$. Our result is analogous to the famous result of Andre regarding plane curves which contain infinitely many points with both coordinates CM parameters in the moduli space of elliptic curves, and is the first complete case of the dynamical Andre-Oort phenomenon studied by Baker and DeMarco.

Uniform Boundedness of S-Units in Arithmetic Dynamics

Let K be a number field and let S be a finite set of places of K which contains all the Archimedean places. For any f(z) in K(z) of degree d at least 2 which is not a d-th power in \bar{K}(z), Siegel's theorem implies that the image set f(K) contains only finitely many S-units. We conjecture that the number of such S-units is bounded by a function of |S| and d (independently of K and f). We prove this conjecture for several classes of rational functions, and show that the full conjecture follows from the Bombieri--Lang conjecture.

A case of the Dynamical Andre-Oort Conjecture

We prove a special case of the Dynamical Andre-Oort Conjecture formulated by Baker and DeMarco. For any integer d>1, we show that for a rational plane curve C parametrized by (t, h(t)) for some non-constant polynomial h with complex coefficients, if there exist infinitely many points (a,b) on the curve C such that both z^d+a and z^d+b are postcritically finite maps, then h(z)=uz for a (d-1)-st root of unity u. As a by-product of our proof, we show that the Mandelbrot set is not the filled Julia set of any polynomial with complex coefficients.

Primitive prime divisors in the critical orbit of z^d+c

We prove the finiteness of the Zsigmondy set associated to the critical orbit of f(z) = z^d+c for rational values of c by finding an effective bound on the size of the set. For non-recurrent critical orbits, the Zsigmondy set is explicitly computed by utilizing effective dynamical height bounds. In the general case, we use Thue-style Diophantine approximation methods to bound the size of the Zsigmondy set when d >2, and complex-analytic methods when d=2.

Some consequences of Schanuel's Conjecture

During the Arizona Winter School 2008 (held in Tucson, AZ) we worked on the following problems: a) (Expanding a remark by S. Lang). Define $E_0 = \overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ Inductively, for $n \geq 1$, define $E_n$ as the algebraic closure of the field generated over $E_{n-1}$ by the numbers $\exp(x)=e^x$, where $x$ ranges over $E_{n-1}$. Let $E$ be the union of $E_n$, $n \geq 0$. Show that Schanuel's Conjecture implies that the numbers $π, \log π, \log \log π, \log \log \log π, \ldots $ are algebraically independent over $E$. b) Try to get a (conjectural) generalization involving the field $L$ defined as follows. Define $L_0 = \overline{\mathbb{Q}}$. Inductively, for $n \geq 1$, define $L_n$ as the algebraic closure of the field generated over $L_{n-1}$ by the numbers $y$, where $y$ ranges over the set of complex numbers such that $e^y\in L_{n-1}$. Let $L$ be the union of $L_n$, $n \geq 0$. We were able to prove that Schanuel's Conjecture implies $E$ and $L$ are linearly disjoint over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$.
