Visualization of magnetic fields with cylindrical vector beams in a warm atomic vapor

We propose and demonstrate an experimental implementation for the observation of magnetic fields from spatial features of absorption profiles in a warm atomic vapor. A radially polarized vector beam that traverses an atomic vapor will generate an absorption pattern with petal-like structure by the mediation of a transverse magnetic field (TMF). The spatial absorption pattern rotates when the azimuthal angle of the TMF is changed, while its contrast decreases when the longitudinal component of the magnetic field increases. By analyzing the intensity distribution of the transmitted pattern we can determine the magnetic field strength. Our work provides a framework for investigating three-dimensional magnetic field distributions based on atoms.

Chiral spin-phonon bound states and spin-spin interactions with phononic lattices

Designing unconventional interactions between single phonons and spins is fascinating for its applications in quantum phononics. Here, we propose a reliable scheme for coupling spins and phonons in phononic dimer and trimer lattices, with the combination of solid-state defects and diamond phononic (optomechanical) crystals. The dimer and trimer lattices used are an array of coupled phononic cavities with spatially modulated hopping rates. We predict a series of unconventional sound-matter interaction phenomena in this hybrid quantum system. In the dimer lattice, we show the formation of chiral spin-phonon bound states and topology-dependent phononic collective radiation. While in the trimer lattice, chiral bound states still exist and the spin relaxation is sublattice-dependent. The chiral bound states existed in both types of lattices are robust to large amount of disorder, which can mediate chiral and robust spin-spin interactions. This work provides a promising platform for phonon-based quantum information processing and quantum simulation.

Phase gradient protection of stored spatially multimode perfect optical vortex beams in a diffused rubidium vapor

We experimentally investigate the optical storage of perfect optical vortex (POV) and spatially multimode perfect optical vortex (MPOV) beams via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a hot vapor cell. In particular, we study the role that phase gradients and phase singularities play in reducing the blurring of the retrieved images due to atomic diffusion. Three kinds of manifestations are enumerated to demonstrate such effect. Firstly, the suppression of the ring width broadening is more prominent for POVs with larger orbital angular momentum (OAM). Secondly, the retrieved double-ring MPOV beams' profiles present regular dark singularity distributions that are related to their vortex charge difference. Thirdly, the storage fidelities of the triple-ring MPOVs are substantially improved by designing line phase singularities between multi-ring MPOVs with the same OAM number but $π$ offset phases between adjacent rings. Our experimental demonstration of MPOV storage opens new opportunities for increasing data capacity in quantum memories by spatial multiplexing, as well as the generation and manipulation of complex optical vortex arrays.

Efficient Trajectory Compression and Range Query Processing

Nowadays, there are ubiquitousness of GPS sensors in various devices collecting, transmitting and storing tremendous trajectory data. However, such an unprecedented scale of GPS data has posed an urgent demand for not only an effective storage mechanism but also an efficient query mechanism. Line simplification in online mode, searving as a mainstream trajectory compression method, plays an important role to attack this issue. But for the existing algorithms, either their time cost is extremely high, or the accuracy loss after the compression is completely unacceptable. To attack this issue, we propose $ε\_$Region based Online trajectory Compression with Error bounded (ROCE for short), which makes the best balance among the accuracy loss, the time cost and the compression rate. The range query serves as a primitive, yet quite essential operation on analyzing trajectories. Each trajectory is usually seen as a sequence of discrete points, and in most previous work, a trajectory is judged to be overlapped with the query region R iff there is at least one point in this trajectory falling in R. But this traditional criteria is not suitable when the queried trajectories are compressed, because there may be hundreds of points discarded between each two adjacent points and the points in each compressed trajectory are quite sparse. And many trajectories could be missing in the result set. To address this, in this paper, a new criteria based on the probability and an efficient Range Query processing algorithm on Compressed trajectories RQC are proposed. In addition, an efficient index \emph{ASP\_tree} and lots of novel techniques are also presented to accelerate the processing of trajectory compression and range queries obviously. Extensive experiments have been done on multiple real datasets, and the results demonstrate superior performance of our methods.

Digital Transformations of Classrooms in Virtual Reality

With rapid developments in consumer-level head-mounted displays and computer graphics, immersive VR has the potential to take online and remote learning closer to real-world settings. However, the effects of such digital transformations on learners, particularly for VR, have not been evaluated in depth. This work investigates the interaction-related effects of sitting positions of learners, visualization styles of peer-learners and teachers, and hand-raising behaviors of virtual peer-learners on learners in an immersive VR classroom, using eye tracking data. Our results indicate that learners sitting in the back of the virtual classroom may have difficulties extracting information. Additionally, we find indications that learners engage with lectures more efficiently if virtual avatars are visualized with realistic styles. Lastly, we find different eye movement behaviors towards different performance levels of virtual peer-learners, which should be investigated further. Our findings present an important baseline for design decisions for VR classrooms.

Impacts of Dirty Data: and Experimental Evaluation

Data quality issues have attracted widespread attention due to the negative impacts of dirty data on data mining and machine learning results. The relationship between data quality and the accuracy of results could be applied on the selection of the appropriate algorithm with the consideration of data quality and the determination of the data share to clean. However, rare research has focused on exploring such relationship. Motivated by this, this paper conducts an experimental comparison for the effects of missing, inconsistent and conflicting data on classification and clustering algorithms. Based on the experimental findings, we provide guidelines for algorithm selection and data cleaning.

Towards efficient quantum memory of orbital angular momentum qubits in cold atoms

The spatial modes of light, carrying a quantized amount of orbital angular momentum (OAM), is one of the excellent candidates that provides access to high-dimensional quantum states, which essentially makes it promising towards building high-dimensional quantum networks. In this paper, we report the storage and retrieval of photonic qubits encoded with OAM state in the cold atomic ensemble, achieving an average conditional fidelity above 98% and retrieval efficiency around 65%. The photonic OAM qubits are encoded with weak coherent states at the single-photon level and the memory is based on electromagnetically induced transparency in an elongated cold rubidium atomic ensemble. Our work constitutes an efficient node that is needed towards high dimensional and large scale quantum networks.

Auto-Model: Utilizing Research Papers and HPO Techniques to Deal with the CASH problem

In many fields, a mass of algorithms with completely different hyperparameters have been developed to address the same type of problems. Choosing the algorithm and hyperparameter setting correctly can promote the overall performance greatly, but users often fail to do so due to the absence of knowledge. How to help users to effectively and quickly select the suitable algorithm and hyperparameter settings for the given task instance is an important research topic nowadays, which is known as the CASH problem. In this paper, we design the Auto-Model approach, which makes full use of known information in the related research paper and introduces hyperparameter optimization techniques, to solve the CASH problem effectively. Auto-Model tremendously reduces the cost of algorithm implementations and hyperparameter configuration space, and thus capable of dealing with the CASH problem efficiently and easily. To demonstrate the benefit of Auto-Model, we compare it with classical Auto-Weka approach. The experimental results show that our proposed approach can provide superior results and achieves better performance in a short time.

Italian domination in generalized Petersen graphs

In a graph $G=(V,E)$, each vertex $v\in V$ is labelled with $0$, $1$ or $2$ such that each vertex labelled with $0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex labelled $2$ or two vertices labelled $1$. Such kind of labelling is called an Italian dominating function (IDF) of $G$. The weight of an IDF $f$ is $w(f)=\sum_{v\in V}f(v)$. The Italian domination number of $G$ is $γ_{I}(G)=\min_{f} w(f)$. Gao et al. (2019) have determined the value of $γ_I(P(n,3))$. In this article, we focus on the study of the Italian domination number of generalized Petersen graphs $P(n, k)$, $k\neq3$. We determine the values of $γ_I(P(n, 1))$, $γ_I(P(n, 2))$ and $γ_I(P(n, k))$ for $k\ge4$, $k\equiv2,3(\bmod5)$ and $n\equiv0(\bmod5)$. For other $P(n,k)$, we present a bound of $γ_I(P(n, k))$. With the obtained results, we partially solve the open problem presented by Brešar et al. (2007) by giving $P(n,1)$ is an example for which $γ_I=γ_{r2}$ and characterizing $P(n,2)$ for which $γ_I(P(n,2))=γ_{r2}(P(n,2))$. Moreover, our results imply $P(n,1)$ $(n\equiv0(\bmod\ 4))$ is Italian, $P(n,1)$ $(n\not\equiv0(\bmod\ 4))$ and $P(n,2)$ are not Italian.

An Efficient Index Method for the Optimal Route Query over Multi-Cost Networks

Smart city has been consider the wave of the future and the route recommendation in networks is a fundamental problem in it. Most existing approaches for the shortest route problem consider that there is only one kind of cost in networks. However, there always are several kinds of cost in networks and users prefer to select an optimal route under the global consideration of these kinds of cost. In this paper, we study the problem of finding the optimal route in the multi-cost networks. We prove this problem is NP-hard and the existing index techniques cannot be used to this problem. We propose a novel partition-based index with contour skyline techniques to find the optimal route. We propose a vertex-filtering algorithm to facilitate the query processing. We conduct extensive experiments on six real-life networks and the experimental results show that our method has an improvement in efficiency by an order of magnitude compared to the previous heuristic algorithms.

Quantum-chemistry-aided identification, synthesis and experimental validation of model systems for conformationally controlled reaction studies: Separation of the conformers of 2,3-dibromobuta-1,3-diene in the gas phase

The Diels-Alder cycloaddition, in which a diene reacts with a dienophile to form a cyclic compound, counts among the most important tools in organic synthesis. Achieving a precise understanding of its mechanistic details on the quantum level requires new experimental and theoretical methods. Here, we present an experimental approach that separates different diene conformers in a molecular beam as a prerequisite for the investigation of their individual cycloaddition reaction kinetics and dynamics under single-collision conditions in the gas phase. A low- and high-level quantum-chemistry-based screening of more than one hundred dienes identified 2,3-dibromobutadiene (DBB) as an optimal candidate for efficient separation of its gauche and s-trans conformers by electrostatic deflection. A preparation method for DBB was developed which enabled the generation of dense molecular beams of this compound. The theoretical predictions of the molecular properties of DBB were validated by the successful separation of the conformers in the molecular beam. A marked difference in photofragment ion yields of the two conformers upon femtosecond-laser pulse ionization was observed, pointing at a pronounced conformer-specific fragmentation dynamics of ionized DBB. Our work sets the stage for a rigorous examination of mechanistic models of cycloaddition reactions under controlled conditions in the gas phase.

Autoregressive-Model-Based Methods for Online Time Series Prediction with Missing Values: an Experimental Evaluation

Time series prediction with missing values is an important problem of time series analysis since complete data is usually hard to obtain in many real-world applications. To model the generation of time series, autoregressive (AR) model is a basic and widely used one, which assumes that each observation in the time series is a noisy linear combination of some previous observations along with a constant shift. To tackle the problem of prediction with missing values, a number of methods were proposed based on various data models. For real application scenarios, how do these methods perform over different types of time series with different levels of data missing remains to be investigated. In this paper, we focus on online methods for AR-model-based time series prediction with missing values. We adapted five mainstream methods to fit in such a scenario. We make detailed discussion on each of them by introducing their core ideas about how to estimate the AR coefficients and their different strategies to deal with missing values. We also present algorithmic implementations for better understanding. In order to comprehensively evaluate these methods and do the comparison, we conduct experiments with various configurations of relative parameters over both synthetic and real data. From the experimental results, we derived several noteworthy conclusions and shows that imputation is a simple but reliable strategy to handle missing values in online prediction tasks.

Efficient quantum state tomography with auxiliary Hilbert space

Quantum state tomography is an important tool for quantum communication, computation, metrology, and simulation. Efficient quantum state tomography on a high dimensional quantum system is still a challenging problem. Here, we propose a novel quantum state tomography method, auxiliary Hilbert space tomography, to avoid pre-rotations before measurement in a quantum state tomography experiment. Our method requires projective measurements in a higher dimensional space that contains the subspace that includes the prepared states. We experimentally demonstrate this method with orbital angular momentum states of photons. In our experiment, the quantum state tomography measurements are as simple as taking a photograph with a camera. We experimentally verify our method with near-pure- and mixed-states of orbital angular momentum with dimension up to $d=13$, and achieve greater than 95 % state fidelities for all states tested. This method dramatically reduces the complexity of measurements for full quantum state tomography, and shows potential application in various high dimensional quantum information tasks.

Schema Integration on Massive Data Sources

As the fundamental phrase of collecting and analyzing data, data integration is used in many applications, such as data cleaning, bioinformatics and pattern recognition. In big data era, one of the major problems of data integration is to obtain the global schema of data sources since the global schema could be hardly derived from massive data sources directly. In this paper, we attempt to solve such schema integration problem. For different scenarios, we develop batch and incremental schema integration algorithms. We consider the representation difference of attribute names in various data sources and propose ED Join and Semantic Join algorithms to integrate attributes with different representations. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms could integrate schemas efficiently and effectively.

Mining CFD Rules on Big Data

Current conditional functional dependencies (CFDs) discovery algorithms always need a well-prepared training data set. This makes them difficult to be applied on large datasets which are always in low-quality. To handle the volume issue of big data, we develop the sampling algorithms to obtain a small representative training set. For the low-quality issue of big data, we then design the fault-tolerant rule discovery algorithm and the conflict resolution algorithm. We also propose parameter selection strategy for CFD discovery algorithm to ensure its effectiveness. Experimental results demonstrate that our method could discover effective CFD rules on billion-tuple data within reasonable time.

On the Fairness of Quality-based Data Markets

For data pricing, data quality is a factor that must be considered. To keep the fairness of data market from the aspect of data quality, we proposed a fair data market that considers data quality while pricing. To ensure fairness, we first design a quality-driven data pricing strategy. Then based on the strategy, a fairness assurance mechanism for quality-driven data marketplace is proposed. In this mechanism, we ensure that savvy consumers cannot cheat the system and users can verify each consumption with Trusted Third Party (TTP) that they are charged properly. Based on this mechanism, we develop a fair quality-driven data market system. Extensive experiments are performed to verify the effectiveness of proposed techniques. Experimental results show that our quality-driven data pricing strategy could assign a reasonable price to the data according to data quality and the fairness assurance mechanism could effectively protect quality-driven data pricing from potential cheating.

Diversification on Big Data in Query Processing

Recently, in the area of big data, some popular applications such as web search engines and recommendation systems, face the problem to diversify results during query processing. In this sense, it is both significant and essential to propose methods to deal with big data in order to increase the diversity of the result set. In this paper, we firstly define a set's diversity and an element's ability to improve the set's overall diversity. Based on these definitions, we propose a diversification framework which has good performance in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. Also, this framework has theoretical guarantee on probability of success. Secondly, we design implementation algorithms based on this framework for both numerical and string data. Thirdly, for numerical and string data respectively, we carry out extensive experiments on real data to verify the performance of our proposed framework, and also perform scalability experiments on synthetic data.

Improve3C: Data Cleaning on Consistency and Completeness with Currency

Data quality plays a key role in big data management today. With the explosive growth of data from a variety of sources, the quality of data is faced with multiple problems. Motivated by this, we study the multiple data quality improvement on completeness, consistency and currency in this paper. For the proposed problem, we introduce a 4-step framework, named Improve3C, for detection and quality improvement on incomplete and inconsistent data without timestamps. We compute and achieve a relative currency order among records derived from given currency constraints, according to which inconsistent and incomplete data can be repaired effectively considering the temporal impact. For both effectiveness and efficiency consideration, we carry out inconsistent repair ahead of incomplete repair. Currency-related consistency distance is defined to measure the similarity between dirty records and clean ones more accurately. In addition, currency orders are treated as an important feature in the training process of incompleteness repair. The solution algorithms are introduced in detail with examples. A thorough experiment on one real-life data and a synthetic one verifies that the proposed method can improve the performance of dirty data cleaning with multiple quality problems which are hard to be cleaned by the existing approaches effectively.
