The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: Baryon Acoustic Oscillations in the Data Release 9 Spectroscopic Galaxy Sample

We present measurements of galaxy clustering from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), which is part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III). These use the Data Release 9 (DR9) CMASS sample, which contains 264,283 massive galaxies covering 3275 square degrees with an effective redshift z=0.57 and redshift range 0.43 < z < 0.7. Assuming a concordance Lambda-CDM cosmological model, this sample covers an effective volume of 2.2 Gpc^3, and represents the largest sample of the Universe ever surveyed at this density, n = 3 x 10^-4 h^-3 Mpc^3. We measure the angle-averaged galaxy correlation function and power spectrum, including density-field reconstruction of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature. The acoustic features are detected at a significance of 5σin both the correlation function and power spectrum. Combining with the SDSS-II Luminous Red Galaxy Sample, the detection significance increases to 6.7σ. Fitting for the position of the acoustic features measures the distance to z=0.57 relative to the sound horizon DV /rs = 13.67 +/- 0.22 at z=0.57. Assuming a fiducial sound horizon of 153.19 Mpc, which matches cosmic microwave background constraints, this corresponds to a distance DV(z=0.57) = 2094 +/- 34 Mpc. At 1.7 per cent, this is the most precise distance constraint ever obtained from a galaxy survey. We place this result alongside previous BAO measurements in a cosmological distance ladder and find excellent agreement with the current supernova measurements. We use these distance measurements to constrain various cosmological models, finding continuing support for a flat Universe with a cosmological constant.

Time-convolutionless non-Markovian master equation in strong-coupling regime

The time-convolutionless (TCL) non-Markovian master equation was generally thought to break down at finite time due to its singularity and fail to produce the asymptotic behavior in strong coupling regime. However, in this paper, we show that the singularity is not an obstacle for validity of the TCL master equation. Further, we propose a multiscale perturbative method valid for solving the TCL master equation in strong coupling regime, though the ordinary perturbative method invalidates therein.

First-principles Analysis of Photo-current in Graphene PN Junctions

We report a first principles investigation of photocurrent generation by graphene PN junctions. The junctions are formed by either chemically doping with nitrogen and boron atoms, or by controlling gate voltages. Non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism combined with density functional theory (DFT) is applied to calculate the photo-response function. The graphene PN junctions show a broad band photo-response including the terahertz range. The dependence of the response on the angle between the light polarization vector and the PN interface is determined. Its variation against photon energy $E_{ph}$ is calculated in the visible range. The essential properties of chemically doped and gate-controlled PN junctions are similar, but the former shows fingerprints of dopant distribution.

Improved Four-state Continuous-variable Quantum Key Distribution with Long Secure Distance

The four-state continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) protocol has a long practical secure distance \cite{Leverrier_PRL_2009}, while it has the difficulty of parameter estimation. We propose an improved four-state protocol, where the covariance matrix can be estimated from experimental data without using the linear channel assumption, and thus ensuring its unconditional security in the asymptotical limit. Our new scheme keeps the advantages of high reconciliation efficiency and long secure distance of the four-state protocol, and it can be implemented under current technology.

Source monitoring for continuous-variable quantum key distribution

The noise in optical source needs to be characterized for the security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD). Two feasible schemes, based on either active optical switch or passive beamsplitter are proposed to monitor the variance of source noise, through which, Eve's knowledge can be properly estimated. We derive the security bounds for both schemes against collective attacks in the asymptotic case, and find that the passive scheme performs better.

Joint Relay Selection and Analog Network Coding using Differential Modulation in Two-Way Relay Channels

In this paper, we consider a general bi-directional relay network with two sources and N relays when neither the source nodes nor the relays know the channel state information (CSI). A joint relay selection and analog network coding using differential modulation (RS-ANC-DM) is proposed. In the proposed scheme, the two sources employ differential modulations and transmit the differential modulated symbols to all relays at the same time. The signals received at the relay is a superposition of two transmitted symbols, which we call the analog network coded symbols. Then a single relay which has minimum sum SER is selected out of N relays to forward the ANC signals to both sources. To facilitate the selection process, in this paper we also propose a simple sub-optimal Min-Max criterion for relay selection, where a single relay which minimizes the maximum SER of two source nodes is selected. Simulation results show that the proposed Min-Max selection has almost the same performance as the optimal selection, but is much simpler. The performance of the proposed RS-ANC-DM scheme is analyzed, and a simple asymptotic SER expression is derived. The analytical results are verified through simulations.

The Security of SARG04 Protocol in Plug and Play Quantum Key Distribution system with an Untrusted Source

The SARG04 protocol is one of the most frequently used protocol in commercial plug-and-play quantum key distribution (QKD) system, where an eavesdropper can completely control or change the photon number statistics of the QKD source. To ensure the security of SARG04 protocol in plug-and-play QKD system with an unknown and untrusted source, the bounds of a few statistical parameters of the source need to be monitored. An active or a passive source monitor schemes are proposed to verify these parameters. Furthermore, the practical issues due to statistical fluctuation and detection noise in the source monitoring process are quantitatively analyzed. Our simulation results show that the passive scheme can be efficiently applied to plug-and-play system with SARG04 protocol.

Molecular ordering of glycine on Cu(100): the p($2\times4$) superstructure

Glycine molecules deposited on Cu(100) surface give rise to an anisotropic free-electron-like (FEL) electronic dispersion in its p(2$\times$4) superstructure, as reported in recent experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 99}, 216102 (2007); J. Am. Chem. Soc. {\bf 129}, 740 (2007)]. Using density functional theory and exhaustively calculating sixteen possible structures, we have determined the molecular arrangement that can give the experimentally observed FEL behavior. Eight configurations, among the sixteen, were not investigated before in the literature and one of them (denoted Str-3) is able to provide the FEL behavior in excellent agreement with the experiments. In addition, the particular configuration Str-3 satisfies other criteria of the observed p(2$\times$4) superstructure, e.g. chirality and cleavable orientation.

Nonlinear bias dependence of spin-transfer torque from atomic first principles

We report first-principles analysis on the bias dependence of spin-transfer torque (STT) in Fe/MgO/Fe magnetic tunnel junctions. The in-plane STT changes from linear to nonlinear dependence as the bias voltage is increased from zero. The angle dependence of STT is symmetric at low bias but asymmetric at high bias. The nonlinear behavior is marked by a threshold point in the STT versus bias curve. The high-bias nonlinear STT is found to be controlled by a resonant transmission channel in the anti-parallel configuration of the magnetic moments. Disorder scattering due to oxygen vacancies in MgO significantly changes the STT threshold bias.

Ameliorating Systematic Uncertainties in the Angular Clustering of Galaxies: A Study using SDSS-III

We investigate the effects of potential sources of systematic error on the angular and photometric redshift, z_phot, distributions of a sample of redshift 0.4 < z < 0.7 massive galaxies whose selection matches that of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) constant mass sample. Utilizing over 112,778 BOSS spectra as a training sample, we produce a photometric redshift catalog for the galaxies in the SDSS DR8 imaging area that, after masking, covers nearly one quarter of the sky (9,913 square degrees). We investigate fluctuations in the number density of objects in this sample as a function of Galactic extinction, seeing, stellar density, sky background, airmass, photometric offset, and North/South Galactic hemisphere. We find that the presence of stars of comparable magnitudes to our galaxies (which are not traditionally masked) effectively remove area. Failing to correct for such stars can produce systematic errors on the measured angular auto-correlation function, w, that are larger than its statistical uncertainty. We describe how one can effectively mask for the presence of the stars, without removing any galaxies from the sample, and minimize the systematic error. Additionally, we apply two separate methods that can be used to correct the systematic errors imparted by any parameter that can be turned into a map on the sky. We find that failing to properly account for varying sky background introduces a systematic error on w. We measure w, in four z_phot slices of width 0.05 between 0.45 < z_phot < 0.65 and find that the measurements, after correcting for the systematic effects of stars and sky background, are generally consistent with a generic LambdaCDM model, at scales up to 60 degrees. At scales greater than 3 degrees and z_phot > 0.5, the magnitude of the corrections we apply are greater than the statistical uncertainty in w.

Continuous-variable quantum key distribution with Gaussian source noise

Source noise affects the security of continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD), and is diffcult to analyze. We propose a model to characterize Gaussian source noise through introducing a neutral party (Fred) who induces the noise with a general unitary transformation. Without knowing Fred's exact state, we derive the security bounds for both reverse and direct reconciliations and show that the bound for reverse reconciliation is tight.

Entanglement and quantum discord dynamics of two atoms under practical feedback control

We study the dynamics of two identical atoms resonantly coupled to a single-mode cavity under practical feedback control, and focus on the detection inefficiency. The entanglement is induced to vanish in finite time by the inefficiency of detection. Counterintuitively, the asymptotic entanglement and quantum discord can be increased by the inefficiency of detection. The noise of detection triggers control field to create entanglement and discord when no photon are emitted from the atoms. Furthermore, sudden change happens to the dynamics of entanglement.

Non-Markovian dynamics without using quantum trajectory

Open quantum system interacting with structured environment is important and manifests non- Markovian behavior, which was conventionally studied using quantum trajectory stochastic method. In this paper, by dividing the effects of the environment into two parts, we propose a deterministic method without using quantum trajectory. This method is more efficient and accurate than stochastic method in most Markovian and non-Markovian cases. We also extend this method to the generalized Lindblad master equation.

Applying GreenLab Model to Adult Chinese Pine Trees with Topology Simplification

This paper applied the functional structural model GreenLab to adult Chinese pine trees (pinus tabulaeformis Carr.). Basic hypotheses of the model were validated such as constant allometry rules, relative sink relationships and topology simplification. To overcome the limitations raised by the complexity of tree structure for collecting experimental data, a simplified pattern of tree description was introduced and compared with the complete pattern for the computational time and the parameter accuracy. The results showed that this simplified pattern was well adapted to fit adult trees with GreenLab.

Passive scheme with a photon-number-resolving detector for monitoring the untrusted source in a plug-and-play quantum-key-distribution system

A passive scheme with a beam splitter and a photon-number-resolving (PNR) detector is proposed to verify the photon statistics of an untrusted source in a plug-and-play quantum-key-distribution system by applying a three-intensity decoy-state protocol. The practical issues due to statistical fluctuation and detection noise are analyzed. The simulation results show that the scheme can work efficiently when the total number of optical pulses sent from Alice to Bob is above 10^8, and the dark count rate of the PNR detector is below 0.5 counts/pulse, which is realizable with current techniques. Furthermore, we propose a practical realization of the PNR detector with a variable optical attenuator combined with a threshold detector.

Graphene spintronics: the role of ferromagnetic electrodes

We report a first principles study of spin-transport under finite bias through a graphene-ferromagnet (FM) interface, where FM=Co(111), Ni(111). The use of Co and Ni electrodes achieves spin efficiencies reaching 80% and 60%, respectively. This large spin filtering results from the materials specific interaction between graphene and the FM which destroys the linear dispersion relation of the graphene bands and leads to an opening of spin-dependent energy gaps of roughly 0.4-0.5 eV at the K points. The minority spin band gap resides higher in energy than the majority spin band gap located near the Fermi level, a feature that results in large minority spin dominated currents.

First principles study of electronic transport through a Cu(111)|graphene junction

We report first principles investigations of the nonequilibrium transport properties of a Cu(111)|graphene interface. The Cu(111) electrode is found to induce a transmission minimum (TM) located -0.68eV below the Fermi level, a feature originating from the Cu-induced charge transfer resulting in n-type doped graphene with the Dirac point coinciding with the TM. An applied bias voltage shifts the n-graphene TM relative to the pure graphene TM and leads to a distinctive peak in the differential conductance indicating the doping level, a characteristic not observed in pure graphene.

Truly random number generation via entropy amplification

We present a simple setup to implement truly random number generator based on the measurement of the laser phase noise. From the entropy point of view, we estimate the number of truly random bits that can be extracted from the sampled Byte. With a simple method of adopting the $m$-least-significant-bit, we amplify the entropy of the original bit sequence and realize a truly random bit generation rate of $300$ Mbps.
