Shot noise of spin current

We report an exact solution for the noise spectrum of spin-current without charge-current in a spin field effect transistor (SFET). For the SFET with two leads, it is found that both auto- and cross-correlation functions are needed to characterize the noise of spin-current. A shot noise is also generated for the charge-current even though the net charge-current is identically zero. The noise spectra of spin-current and charge-current depends on the coupling strength between the SFET and the leads, and they may behave qualitatively differently. We also present results of noise spectra in the adiabatic regime.

A spin-cell for spin current

We propose and investigate a spin-cell device which provides the necessary spin-motive force to drive a spin current for future spintronic circuits. Our spin-cell have four basic characteristics: (i) it has two poles so that a spin current flows in from one pole and out from the other pole, this way a complete spin-circuit can be established; (ii) it has a source of energy to drive the spin current; (iii) it maintains spin coherence so that a sizable spin current can be delivered; (iv) it drives a spin current without a charge current. The proposed spin-cell for spin current should be realizable using technologies presently available.

Spin-current induced electric field

We theoretically predict that a pure steady state spin-current without charge-current can induce an electric field. A formula for the induced electric field is derived and we investigate its characteristics. Conversely, a moving spin is affected by an external electric field and we present a formula for the interaction energy.

Correlated two-electron transport: a principle for a novel charge pump

By considering a correlated two-electron transport process (TET) and using a diagrammatic analysis within the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we discuss a novel charge pump by which carriers are pumped from a contact with low chemical potential to another contact with a higher potential. The TET process involves two correlated incident electrons scattering and exchanging energy with each other. The process can significantly affect charge current density and it involves high empty states and/or low filled states of the Fermi liquid of the leads.

Non-adiabatic charge pump: an exact solution

We derived a general and exact expression of current for quantum parametric charge pumps in the non-adiabatic regime at finite pumping frequency and finite driving amplitude. The non-perturbative theory predicts a remarkable plateau structure in the pumped current due to multi-photon assisted processes in a double-barrier quantum well pump involving only a {\it single} pumping potential. It also predicts a current reversal as the resonant level of the pump crosses the Fermi energy of the leads.

Parametric quantum spin pump

We investigate a non-adiabatic parametric quantum pump consists of a nonmagnetic scattering region connected by two ferromagnetic leads. The presence of ferromagnetic leads allows electrons with different spins to experience different potential landscape. Using this effect we propose a quantum spin pump that drives spin-up electrons to flow in one direction and spin-down electrons to flow in opposite direction. As a result, the spin pump can deliver a spin current with vanishing charge current.

Thermal Conductance for Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes

We report a theoretical analysis of the phonon thermal conductance, κ(T), for single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCN). In a range of low temperatues up to 100K, κ(T) of perfect SWCN is found to increase with temperature, approximately, in a parabolic fashion. This is qualitatively consistent with recent experimental measurements where the tube-tube interactions are negligibly weak. When the carbon-carbon bond length is slightly varied, κ(T) is found to be qualitatively unaltered which implies that the anharmonic effect does not change the qualitative behavior of κ(T).

Quantum spin field effect transistor

We propose, theoretically, a new type of quantum field effect transistor that operates purely on the flow of spin current in the absence of charge current. This spin field effect transistor (SFET) is constructed without any magnetic material, but with the help of spin flip mechanism provided by a rotating external magnetic field of uniform strength. The SFET generates a constant instantaneous spin current that is sensitively controllable by a gate voltage as well as by the frequency and strength of the rotating field. The characteristics of a Carbon nanotube based SFET is provided as an example.

Excess Kondo resonance in a quantum dot device with normal and superconducting leads: the physics of Andreev-normal co-tunneling

We report on a novel Kondo phenomenon of interacting quantum dots coupled asymmetrically to a normal and a superconducting lead. The effects of intradot Coulomb interaction and Andreev tunneling give rise to Andreev bound resonances. As a result, a new type of co-tunneling process which we term Andreev-normal co-tunneling, is predicted. At low temperatures, coherent superposition of these co-tunneling processes induces a Kondo effect in which Cooper pairs directly participate formation of a spin singlet, leading to four Kondo resonance peaks in the local density of states, and enhancing the tunneling current.

Double quantum dots: interdot interactions, co-tunneling, and Kondo resonances without spin

We show that through an interdot off-site electron correlation in a double quantum-dot (DQD) device, Kondo resonances emerge in the local density of states without the electron spin-degree of freedom. We identify the physical mechanism behind this phenomenon: rather than forming a spin singlet in the device as required in the conventional Kondo physics, we found that exchange of electron position between the two quantum dots, together with the off-site Coulomb interaction, are sufficient to induce the Kondo resonance. Due to peculiar co-tunneling events, the Kondo resonance in one dot may be pinned at the chemical potential of the other one.

Hamiltonian approach to the ac Josephson effect in superconducting-normal hybrid systems

The ac Josephson effect in hybrid systems of a normal mesoscopic conductor coupled to two superconducting (S) leads is investigated theoretically. A general formula of the ac components of time-dependent current is derived which is valid for arbitrary interactions in the normal region. We apply this formula to analyze a S-normal-S system where the normal region is a noninteracting single level quantum dot. We report the physical behavior of time-averaged nonequilibrium distribution of electrons in the quantum dot, the formation of Andreev bound states, and ac components of the time-dependent current. The distribution is found to exhibit a population inversion; and all Andreev bound states between the superconducting gap $Δ$ carry the same amount of current and in the same flow direction. The ac components of time-dependent current show strong oscillatory behavior in marked contrast to the subharmonic gap structure of the average current.

Enhancement of parametric pumping due to Andreev reflection

We report properties of parametric electron pumping in the presence of a superconducting lead. Due to a constructive interference between the direct reflection and the multiple Andreev reflection, the pumped current is greatly enhanced. For both quantum point contacts and double barrier structures at resonance, we obtain exact solutions in the weak pumping regime showing that $I_p^{NS} = 4 I_p^N$, which should be compared with the result of conductance $G_{NS} = 2G_N$. Numerical results are also provided for the strong pumping regime showing interesting Andreev assisted pumping behaviour.

Parametric pumping at finite frequency

We report on a first principles theory for analyzing the parametric electron pump at a finite frequency. The pump is controlled by two pumping parameters with phase difference $ϕ$. In the zero frequency limit, our theory predicts the well known result that the pumped current is proportional to $\sinϕ$. For the more general situation of a finite frequency, our theory predicts a non-vanishing pumped current even when the two driving forces are in phase, in agreement with the recent experimental results. We present the physical mechanism behind the nonzero pumped current at $ϕ=0$, which we found to be due to photon-assisted processes.

I-V characteristics and differential conductance fluctuations of Au nanowires

Electronic transport properties of Au nano-structure are investigated using both experimental and theoretical analysis. Experimentally, stable Au nanowires were created using mechanically controllable break junction in air, and simultaneous current-voltage (I-V) and differential conductance $δI/δV$ data were measured. The atomic device scale structures are mechanically very stable up to bias voltage $V_b\sim0.6V$ and have a life time of a few $minutes$. Facilitated by a shape function data analysis technique which finger-prints electronic properties of the atomic device, our data show clearly differential conductance fluctuations with an amplitude $>1%$ at room temperature, and a nonlinear I-V characteristics. To understand the transport features of these atomic scale conductors, we carried out {\it ab initio} calculations on various Au atomic wires. The theoretical results demonstrate that transport properties of these systems crucially depend on the electronic properties of the scattering region, the leads, and most importantly the interaction of the scattering region with the leads. For ideal, clean Au contacts, the theoretical results indicate a linear I-V behavior for bias voltage $V_b<0.5V$. When sulfur impurities exist at the contact junction, nonlinear I-V curves emerge due to a tunnelling barrier established in the presence of the S atom. The most striking observation is that even a single S atom can cause a qualitative change of the I-V curve from linear to nonlinear. A quantitatively favorable comparison between experimental data and theoretical results is obtained. We also report other results concerning quantum transport through Au atomic contacts.

Kondo resonance in a multi-probe quantum dot

We present a theoretical analysis of a possible route for directly detecting Kondo resonances in local density of states (LDOS) of an interacting quantum dot. By very weakly couple a third and/or a fourth lead to a two-probe quantum dot and measuring differential conductance through these extra links, we show that Kondo peaks directly map onto the differential conductance measured from the third link. We analyze the conditions by which this detection of Kondo peaks in LDOS is possible.

Resonant Andreev reflections in superconductor-carbon-nanotube devices

Resonant Andreev reflection through superconductor-carbon-nanotube devices was investigated theoretically with a focus on the superconducting proximity effect. Consistent with a recent experiment, we find that for high transparency devices on-resonance, the Andreev current is characterized by a large value and a resistance dip; low-transparency off-resonance devices give the opposite result. We also give evidence that the observed low-temperature transport anomaly may be a natural result of Andreev reflection process.

Nonlinear transport theory for hybrid normal-superconducting devices

We report a theory for analyzing nonlinear DC transport properties of mesoscopic or nanoscopic normal-superconducting (N-S) systems. Special attention was paid such that our theory satisfies gauge invariance. At the linear transport regime and the sub-gap region where the familiar scattering matrix theory has been developed, we provide confirmation that our theory and the scattering matrix theory are equivalent. At the nonlinear regime, however, our theory allows the investigation of a number of important problems: for N-S hybrid systems we have derived the general nonlinear current-voltage characteristics in terms of the scattering Green's function, the second order nonlinear conductance at the weakly nonlinear regime, and nonequilibrium charge pile-up in the device which defines the electrochemical capacitance coefficients.

ab initio modeling of open systems: charge transfer, electron conduction, and molecular switching of a C_{60} device

We present an {\it ab initio} analysis of electron conduction through a $C_{60}$ molecular device. Charge transfer from the device electrodes to the molecular region is found to play a crucial role in aligning the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the $C_{60}$ to the Fermi level of the electrodes. This alignment induces a substantial device conductance of $\sim 2.2 \times (2e^2/h)$. A gate potential can inhibit charge transfer and introduce a conductance gap near $E_F$, changing the current-voltage characteristics from metallic to semi-conducting, thereby producing a field effect molecular current switch.
