In-Medium Effective Pion Mass from Heavy-Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory

Using heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory, we have calculated all the diagrams up to two-loop order which contribute to the S-wave pion self-energy in symmetric nuclear matter. Some subtleties related to the definition of pion fields are discussed. The in-medium pion mass is turned out to be increased by only (5 - 6) per cents in normal nuclear matter density, without any off-shell ambiguity.

In-Medium Effective Axial-Vector Coupling Constant

The axial-vector coupling constant in nuclear medium is systematically studied using chiral perturbation theory. For normal nuclear matter, the first non-trivial corrections are estimated based on the independent particle approximation taking into account nuclear correlations in nuclear medium. The one-pion-exchange (OPE) two-body interactions turn out to enhance the coupling constant by $δg_A/g_A\simeq (0.09 \sim 0.15)$. The role of the four-nucleon contact interaction, whose low-energy constants are yet to be determined, is analyzed in connection with the empirical quenching factor of $δg_A/g_A\simeq -0.2$ in the presence of the nuclear short-range correlation. Conventional approaches are discussed in the light of our result.

Implications of Recent Data on Non-mesonic Decay of Light Lambda-hypernuclei

We analyze the recent data on the non-mesonic decays of light Lambda-hypernuclei up to ^12_Lambda C using the phenomenological model of Block and Dalitz. Fitting the spin-isospin dependent Lambda N -> NN reaction rates to six data points, we predict the remaining data in reasonable consistency. We find that despite the short-range nature of the Lambda N -> NN interaction, the non-mesonic decay of p-shell hypernuclei seems to be strongly induced by the p-shell neutrons. Also, the recent data indicate that the Delta I = 1/2 rule, well proved at the hadronic level, may not be sacred in the nuclear medium and the Delta I = 3/2 interactions seem to be needed to describe the non-mesonic decays of Lambda-hypernuclei.

Kaon-Nucleon Scattering from Chiral Lagrangians

The s-wave $K^{\pm}N$ scattering amplitude is computed up to one-loop order corresponding to next-to-next-to-leading order (or N$^2$LO in short) with a heavy-baryon effective chiral Lagrangian. Constraining the low-energy constants by on-shell scattering lengths, we obtain contributions of each chiral order up to N$^2$LO and find that the chiral corrections are ``natural" in the sense of viable effective field theories. We have also calculated off-shell $s$-wave $K^-N$ scattering amplitudes relevant to kaonic atoms and $K^-$ condensation in ``nuclear star" matter including the effect of $Λ(1405)$. The $K^-p$ amplitude is found to be quite sensitive to the intermediate $Λ(1405)$ contribution, while the $K^-n$ amplitude varies smoothly with the C.M. energy. The crossing-even one-loop corrections are found to play an important role in determining the higher-order chiral corrections.
