Meson widths from string worldsheet instantons

We show that open strings living on a D-brane which lies outside an AdS black hole can tunnel into the black hole through worldsheet instantons. These instantons have a simple interpretation in terms of thermal quarks in the dual Yang-Mills (YM) theory. As an application we calculate the width of a meson in a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma which is described holographically as a massless mode on a D7 brane in AdS_5 \times S_5. While the width of the meson is zero to all orders in the 1/\sqrtλ expansion with λthe 't Hooft coupling, it receives non-perturbative contributions in 1/\sqrtλ from worldsheet instantons. We find that the width increases quadratically with momentum at large momentum and comment on potential phenomenological implications of this enhancement for heavy ion collisions. We also comment on how this non-perturbative effect has important consequences for the phase structure of the YM theory obtained in the classical gravity limit.

Viscosity Bound Violation in Higher Derivative Gravity

Motivated by the vast string landscape, we consider the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio in conformal field theories dual to Einstein gravity with curvature square corrections. After field redefinitions these theories reduce to Gauss-Bonnet gravity, which has special properties that allow us to compute the shear viscosity nonperturbatively in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling. By tuning of the coupling, the value of the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio can be adjusted to any positive value from infinity down to zero, thus violating the conjectured viscosity bound. At linear order in the coupling, we also check consistency of four different methods to calculate the shear viscosity, and we find that all of them agree. We search for possible pathologies associated with this class of theories violating the viscosity bound.

Viscosity Bound and Causality Violation

In recent work we showed that, for a class of conformal field theories (CFT) with Gauss-Bonnet gravity dual, the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio, $η/s$, could violate the conjectured Kovtun-Starinets-Son viscosity bound, $η/s\geq1/4π$. In this paper we argue, in the context of the same model, that tuning $η/s$ below $(16/25)(1/4π)$ induces microcausality violation in the CFT, rendering the theory inconsistent. This is a concrete example in which inconsistency of a theory and a lower bound on viscosity are correlated, supporting the idea of a possible universal lower bound on $η/s$ for all consistent theories.

Velocity Dependence of Baryon Screening in a Hot Strongly Coupled Plasma

The L-dependence of the static potential between Nc quarks arranged in a circle of radius L (a "baryon") immersed in the hot plasma of a gauge theory with Nc colors defines a screening length Ls. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute this screening length for the case of heavy quarks in the plasma of strongly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills theory moving with velocity v relative to the baryon. We find that in the v -> 1 limit, Ls \propto (1-v^2)^{1/4}/T, and find that corrections to this velocity dependence are small at lower velocities. This result provides evidence for the robustness of the analogous behavior of the screening length defined by the static quark-antiquark pair, which has been computed previously and in QCD is relevant to quarkonium physics in heavy ion collisions. Our results also show that as long as the hot wind is not blowing precisely perpendicular to the plane of the baryon configuration that we analyze, the Nc different quarks are not all affected by the wind velocity to the same degree, with those quarks lying perpendicular to the wind direction screened most effectively.

A limiting velocity for quarkonium propagation in a strongly coupled plasma via AdS/CFT

We study the dispersion relations of mesons in a particular hot strongly coupled supersymmetric gauge theory plasma. We find that at large momentum k the dispersion relations become omega = v_0 k + a + b/k + ..., where the limiting velocity v_0 is the same for mesons with any quantum numbers and depends only on the ratio of the temperature to the quark mass T/m_q. We compute a and b in terms of the meson quantum numbers and T/m_q. The limiting meson velocity v_0 becomes much smaller than the speed of light at temperatures below but close to T_diss, the temperature above which no meson bound states at rest in the plasma are found. From our result for v_0, we find that the temperature above which no meson bound states with velocity v exist is T_diss(v) \simeq (1-v^2)^(1/4) T_diss, up to few percent corrections. We thus confirm by direct calculation of meson dispersion relations a result inferred indirectly in previous work via analysis of the screening length between a static quark and antiquark in a moving plasma. Although we do not do our calculations in QCD, we argue that the qualitative features of the dispersion relation we compute, including in particular the relation between dissociation temperature and meson velocity, may apply to bottomonium and charmonium mesons propagating in the strongly coupled plasma of QCD. We discuss how our results can contribute to understanding quarkonium physics in heavy ion collisions.

The arrow of time, black holes, and quantum mixing of large N Yang-Mills theories

Quantum gravity in an AdS spacetime is described by an SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on a sphere, a bounded many-body system. We argue that in the high temperature phase the theory is intrinsically non-perturbative in the large N limit. At any nonzero value of the 't Hooft coupling $λ$, an exponentially large (in N^2) number of free theory states of wide energy range (of order N) mix under the interaction. As a result the planar perturbation theory breaks down. We argue that an arrow of time emerges and the dual string configuration should be interpreted as a stringy black hole.

From Fake Supergravity to Superstars

The fake supergravity method is applied to 5-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetimes containing gravity coupled to a real scalar and an abelian gauge field. The motivation is to obtain bulk solutions with R x S^3 symmetry in order to explore the AdS/CFT correspondence when the boundary gauge theory is on R x S^3. A fake supergravity action, invariant under local supersymmetry through linear order in fermion fields, is obtained. The gauge field makes things more restrictive than in previous applications of fake supergravity which allowed quite general scalar potentials. Here the superpotential must take the form W(ϕ) ~ exp(-kϕ) + c exp(2ϕ/(3k)), and the only freedom is the choice of the constant k. The fermion transformation rules of fake supergravity lead to fake Killing spinor equations. From their integrability conditions, we obtain first order differential equations which we solve analytically to find singular electrically charged solutions of the Lagrangian field equations. A Schwarzschild mass term can be added to produce a horizon which shields the singularity. The solutions, which include "superstars", turn out to be known in the literature. We compute their holographic parameters.

Heavy ion collisions and AdS/CFT

We review some recent applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence to heavy ion collisions including a calculation of the jet quenching parameter in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory and quarkonium suppression from velocity scaling of the screening length for a heavy quark-antiquark pair. We also briefly discuss differences and similarities between QCD and N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory.

Closed strings from decaying D-branes

We compute the emission of closed string radiation from homogeneous rolling tachyons. For an unstable decaying D$p$-brane the radiated energy is infinite to leading order for $p\leq 2$ and finite for $p>2$. The closed string state produced by a decaying brane is closely related to the state produced by D-instantons at a critical Euclidean distance from $t=0$. In the case of a D0 brane one can cutoff this divergence so that we get a finite energy final state which would be the state that the brane decays into.

Wilson loops in heavy ion collisions and their calculation in AdS/CFT

Expectation values of Wilson loops define the nonperturbative properties of the hot medium produced in heavy ion collisions that arise in the analysis of both radiative parton energy loss and quarkonium suppression. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to calculate the expectation values of such Wilson loops in the strongly coupled plasma of N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, allowing for the possibility that the plasma may be moving with some collective flow velocity as is the case in heavy ion collisions. We obtain the N=4 SYM values of the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$, which describes the energy loss of a hard parton in QCD, and of the velocity-dependence of the quark-antiquark screening length for a moving dipole as a function of the angle between its velocity and its orientation. We show that if the quark-gluon plasma is flowing with velocity v_f at an angle theta with respect to the trajectory of a hard parton, the jet quenching parameter $\hat q$ is modified by a factor gamma_f(1-v_f cos theta), and show that this result applies in QCD as in N=4 SYM. We discuss the relevance of the lessons we are learning from all these calculations to heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC. Furthermore, we discuss the relation between our results and those obtained in other theories with gravity duals, showing in particular that the ratio between $\hat q$ in any two conformal theories with gravity duals is the square root of the ratio of their central charges. This leads us to conjecture that in nonconformal theories $\hat q$ defines a quantity that always decreases along renormalization group trajectories and allows us to use our calculation of $\hat q$ in N=4 SYM to make a conjecture for its value in QCD.

Hagedorn divergences and tachyon potential

We consider the critical behavior for a string theory near the Hagedorn temperature. We use the factorization of the worldsheet to isolate the Hagedorn divergences at all genera. We show that the Hagedorn divergences can be resummed by introducing double scaling limits, which smooth the divergences. The double scaling limits also allow one to extract the effective potential for the thermal scalar. For a string theory in an asymptotic anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime, the AdS/CFT correspondence implies that the critical Hagedorn behavior and the relation with the effective potential should also arise from the boundary Yang-Mills theory. We show that this is indeed the case. In particular we find that the free energy of a Yang-Mills theory contains ``vortex'' contributions at finite temperature. Yang-Mills Feynman diagrams with vortices can be identified with contributions from boundaries of moduli space on the string theory side.

An AdS/CFT Calculation of Screening in a Hot Wind

One of the challenges in relating experimental measurements of the suppression in the number of J/ψmesons produced in heavy ion collisions to lattice QCD calculations is that whereas the lattice calculations treat J/ψmesons at rest, in a heavy ion collision a c\bar c pair can have a significant velocity with respect to the hot fluid produced in the collision. The putative J/ψfinds itself in a hot wind. We present the first rigorous non-perturbative calculation of the consequences of a wind velocity v on the screening length L_s for a heavy quark-antiquark pair in hot N=4 supersymmetric QCD. We find L_s(v,T) = f(v)[1-v^2]^{1/4}/πT with f(v) only mildly dependent on v and the wind direction. This L_s(v,T)\sim L_s(0,T)/\sqrtγ velocity scaling, if realized in QCD, provides a significant additional source of J/Ψsuppression at transverse momenta which are high but within experimental reach.

Bulk-cone singularities & signatures of horizon formation in AdS/CFT

We discuss the relation between singularities of correlation functions and causal properties of the bulk spacetime in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In particular, we argue that the boundary field theory correlation functions are singular when the insertion points are connected causally by a bulk null geodesic. This implies the existence of "bulk-cone singularities" in boundary theory correlation functions which lie inside the boundary light-cone. We exhibit the pattern of singularities in various asymptotically AdS spacetimes and argue that this pattern can be used to probe the bulk geometry. We apply this correspondence to the specific case of shell collapse in AdS/CFT and indicate a sharp feature in the boundary observables corresponding to black hole event horizon formation.

Calculating the Jet Quenching Parameter from AdS/CFT

Models of medium-induced radiative parton energy loss account for the strong suppression of high-pT hadron spectra in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC in terms of a single "jet quenching parameter'' $\hat q$. The available suite of jet quenching measurements make $\hat q$ one of the experimentally best constrained properties of the hot fluid produced in RHIC collisions. We observe that $\hat q$ can be given a model-independent, nonperturbative, quantum field theoretic definition in terms of the short-distance behavior of a particular light-like Wilson loop. We then use the AdS/CFT correspondence to obtain a strong-coupling calculation of $\hat q$ in hot N=4 supersymmetric QCD, finding $\hat{q}_{SYM} = 26.69 \sqrt{α_{SYM} N_c} T^3$ in the limit in which both $N_c$ and $4πα_{SYM} N_c$ are large. We thus learn that at strong coupling $\hat q$ is not proportional to the entropy density $s$, or to some "number density of scatterers'' since, unlike the number of degrees of freedom, $\hat q$ does not grow like $N_c^2$.

Inheritance principle and Non-renormalization theorems at finite temperature

We present a general proof of an ``inheritance principle'' satisfied by a weakly coupled SU(N) gauge theory with adjoint matter on a class of compact manifolds (like $S^3$). In the large $N$ limit, finite temperature correlation functions of gauge invariant single-trace operators in the low temperature phase are related to those at zero temperature by summing over images of each operator in the Euclidean time direction. As a consequence, various non-renormalization theorems of $\NN=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory on $S^3$ survive at finite temperature despite the fact that the conformal and supersymmetries are both broken.

Excursions beyond the horizon: Black hole singularities in Yang-Mills theories (I)

We study black hole singularities in the AdS/CFT correspondence. These singularities show up in CFT in the behavior of finite-temperature correlation functions. We first establish a direct relation between space-like geodesics in the bulk and momentum space Wightman functions of CFT operators of large dimensions. This allows us to probe the regions inside the horizon and near the singularity using the CFT. Information about the black hole singularity is encoded in the exponential falloff of finite-temperature correlators at large imaginary frequency. We construct new gauge invariant observables whose divergences reflect the presence of the singularity. We also find a UV/UV connection that governs physics inside the horizon. Additionally, we comment on the possible resolution of the singularity.

Structural and electronic properties of the metal-metal intramolecular junctions of single-walled carbon nanotubes

Several intramolecular junctions (IMJs) connecting two metallic (11, 8) and (9, 6) carbon nanotubes along their common axis have been realized by using a layer-divided technique to the nanotubes and introducing the topological defects. Atomic structure of each IMJ configuration is optimized with a combination of density-functional theory (DFT) and the universal force field (UFF) method, based upon which a four-orbital tight-binding calculation is made on its electronic properties. Different topological defect structures and their distributions on the IMJ interfaces have been found, showing decisive effects on the localized density of states, while the sigma-pi coupling effect is negligible near Fermi energy (EF). Finally, a new IMJ model has been proposed, which probably reflects a real atomic structure of the M-M IMJ observed in the experiment [Science 291, 97 (2001)].

Finite temperature effective action, AdS_5 black holes, and 1/N expansion

We propose a phenomenological matrix model to study string theory in AdS_5 \times S_5 in the canonical ensemble. The model reproduces all the known qualitative features of the theory. In particular, it gives a simple effective potential description of Euclidean black hole nucleation and the tunnelling between thermal AdS and the big black hole. It also has some interesting predictions. We find that there exists a critical temperature at which the Euclidean small black hole undergoes a Gross-Witten phase transition. We identify the phase transition with the Horowitz-Polchinski point where the black hole horizon size becomes comparable to the string scale. The appearance of the Hagedorn divergence of thermal AdS is due to the merger of saddle points corresponding to the Euclidean small black hole and thermal AdS. The merger can be described in terms of a cusp (A_3) catastrophe and divergences at the perturbative string level are smoothed out at finite string coupling using standard techniques of catastrophe theory.
