Transmission Design for Active RIS-Aided Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a revolutionary technology to enhance both the spectral efficiency and energy efficiency of wireless communication systems. However, most of the existing contributions mainly focused on the study of passive RIS, which suffers from the ``double fading'' effect. On the other hand, active RIS, which is equipped with amplifiers, can effectively address this issue. In this paper, we propose an active RIS-aided simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system. Specifically, we maximize the weighted sum rate of the information receivers, subject to the minimum power received at all energy receivers, amplification power constraint at the active RIS, and the maximum transmit power constraint at the base station (BS). By adopting alternating optimization framework, suboptimal solutions are obtained. Simulation results show that the active RIS-aided SWIPT system has higher performance gain with the same power budget.

Low-overhead Beam Training Scheme for Extremely Large-Scale RIS in Near-field

Extremely large-scale reconfigurable intelligent surface (XL-RIS) has recently been proposed and is recognized as a promising technology that can further enhance the capacity of communication systems and compensate for severe path loss . However, the pilot overhead of beam training in XL-RIS-assisted wireless communication systems is enormous because the near-field channel model needs to be taken into account, and the number of candidate codewords in the codebook increases dramatically accordingly. To tackle this problem, we propose two deep learning-based near-field beam training schemes in XL-RIS-assisted communication systems, where deep residual networks are employed to determine the optimal near-field RIS codeword. Specifically, we first propose a far-field beam-based beam training (FBT) scheme in which the received signals of all far-field RIS codewords are fed into the neural network to estimate the optimal near-field RIS codeword. In order to further reduce the pilot overhead, a partial near-field beam-based beam training (PNBT) scheme is proposed, where only the received signals corresponding to the partial near-field XL-RIS codewords are served as input to the neural network. Moreover, we further propose an improved PNBT scheme to enhance the performance of beam training by fully exploring the neural network's output. Finally, simulation results show that the proposed schemes outperform the existing beam training schemes and can reduce the beam sweeping overhead by approximately 95%.

Resource Allocation for Uplink Cell-Free Massive MIMO enabled URLLC in a Smart Factory

Smart factories need to support the simultaneous communication of multiple industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) devices with ultra-reliability and low-latency communication (URLLC). Meanwhile, short packet transmission for IIoT applications incurs performance loss compared to traditional long packet transmission for human-to-human communications. On the other hand, cell-free massive multiple-input and multiple-output (CF mMIMO) technology can provide uniform services for all devices by deploying distributed access points (APs). In this paper, we adopt CF mMIMO to support URLLC in a smart factory. Specifically, we first derive the lower bound (LB) on achievable uplink data rate under the finite blocklength (FBL) with imperfect channel state information (CSI) for both maximum-ratio combining (MRC) and full-pilot zero-forcing (FZF) decoders. \textcolor{black}{The derived LB rates based on the MRC case have the same trends as the ergodic rate, while LB rates using the FZF decoder tightly match the ergodic rates}, which means that resource allocation can be performed based on the LB data rate rather the exact ergodic data rate under FBL. The \textcolor{black}{log-function method} and successive convex approximation (SCA) are then used to approximately transform the non-convex weighted sum rate problem into a series of geometric program (GP) problems, and an iterative algorithm is proposed to jointly optimize the pilot and payload power allocation. Simulation results demonstrate that CF mMIMO significantly improves the average weighted sum rate (AWSR) compared to centralized mMIMO. An interesting observation is that increasing the number of devices improves the AWSR for CF mMIMO whilst the AWSR remains relatively constant for centralized mMIMO.

Joint Angle Estimation Error Analysis and 3D Positioning Algorithm Design for mmWave Positioning System

In this paper, we propose a comprehensive framework to jointly analyze the angle estimation error and design the three-dimensional (3D) positioning algorithm for a millimeter wave (mmWave) positioning system. First, we estimate the angles of arrival (AoAs) at the anchors by applying the two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (2D-DFT) algorithm. Based on the property of the 2D-DFT algorithm, the angle estimation error is analyzed in terms of probability density functions (PDF). The analysis shows that the derived angle estimation error is non-Gaussian, which is different from the existing work. Second, the intricate expression of the PDF of the AoA estimation error is simplified by employing the first-order linear approximation of triangle functions. Then, we derive a complex expression for the variance based on the derived PDF. Specifically, for the azimuth estimation error, the variance is separately integrated according to the different non-zero intervals of the PDF. Finally, we apply the weighted least square (WLS) algorithm to estimate the 3D position of the MU by using the estimated AoAs and the obtained non-Gaussian variance. Extensive simulation results confirm that the derived angle estimation error is non-Gaussian, and also demonstrate the superiority of the proposed framework.

Fingerprint Based mmWave Positioning System Aided by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technique for millimeter wave (mmWave) positioning systems. In this paper, we consider multiple mobile users (MUs) positioning problem in the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) time-division duplex (TDD) mmWave systems aided by the RIS. We derive the expression for the space-time channel response vector (STCRV) as a novel type of fingerprint. The STCRV consists of the multipath channel characteristics, e.g., time delay and angle of arrival (AOA), which is related to the position of the MU. By using the STCRV as input, we propose a novel residual convolution network regression (RCNR) learning algorithm to output the estimated three-dimensional (3D) position of the MU. Specifically, the RCNR learninng algorithm includes a data processing block to process the input STCRV, a normal convolution block to extract the features of STCRV, four residual convolution blocks to further extract the features and protect the integrity of the features, and a regression block to estimate the 3D position. Extensive simulation results are also presented to demonstrate that the proposed RCNR learning algorithm outperforms the traditional convolution neural network (CNN).

Two-Timescale Design for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Massive MIMO Systems with Imperfect CSI

This paper investigates the two-timescale transmission design for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where the beamforming at the base station (BS) is adapted to the rapidly-changing instantaneous channel state information (CSI), while the passive beamforming at the RIS is adapted to the slowly-changing statistical CSI. Specifically, we first propose a linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) estimator to obtain the aggregated channel from the users to the BS in each channel coherence interval. Based on the estimated channel, we apply the low-complexity maximal ratio combining (MRC) beamforming at the BS, and then derive the ergodic achievable rate in a closed form expression. To draw design insights, we perform a detailed theoretical analysis departing from the derived ergodic achievable rate. If the BS-RIS channel is Rician distributed, we prove that the transmit power can be scaled proportionally to $1/M$, as the number of BS antennas, $M$, grows to infinity while maintaining a non-zero rate. If the BS-RIS channel is Rayleigh distributed, the transmit power can be scaled either proportionally to $1/\sqrt{M}$ as $M$ grows large, or proportionally to $1/N$ as the number of reflecting elements, $N$, grows large, while still maintaining a non-zero rate. By capitalizing on the derived expression of the data rate under the statistical knowledge of the CSI, we maximize the minimum user rate by designing the passive beamforming at the RIS. Numerical results confirm that, even in the presence of imperfect CSI, the integration of an RIS in massive MIMO systems results in promising performance gains. In addition, the obtained results reveal that it is favorable to place the RIS close to the users rather than close to the BS.

Deep Learning Based Beam Training for Extremely Large-Scale Massive MIMO in Near-Field Domain

Extremely large-scale massive multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is regarded as a promising technology for next-generation communication systems. In order to enhance the beamforming gains, codebook-based beam training is widely adopted in XL-MIMO systems. However, in XL-MIMO systems, the near-field domain expands, and near-field codebook should be adopted for beam training, which significantly increases the pilot overhead. To tackle this problem, we propose a deep learning-based beam training scheme where the near-field channel model and the near-field codebook are considered. To be specific, we first utilize the received signals corresponding to the far-field wide beams to estimate the optimal near-field beam. Two training schemes are proposed, namely the proposed original and the improved neural networks. The original scheme estimates the optimal near-field codeword directly based on the output of the neural networks. By contrast, the improved scheme performs additional beam testing, which can significantly improve the performance of beam training. Finally, the simulation results show that our proposed schemes can significantly reduce the training overhead in the near-field domain and achieve beamforming gains.

Error Propagation and Overhead Reduced Channel Estimation for RIS-Aided Multi-User mmWave Systems

In this paper, we propose a novel two-stage based uplink channel estimation strategy with reduced pilot overhead and error propagation for a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-user (MU) millimeter wave (mmWave) system. Specifically, in Stage I, with the carefully designed RIS phase shift matrix and introduced matching matrices, all users jointly estimate the correlation factors between different paths of the common RIS-base station (BS) channel, which achieves significant multi-user diversity gain. Then, the inherent scaling ambiguity and angle ambiguity of the mmWave cascaded channel are utilized to construct an ambiguous common RIS-BS channel composed of the estimated correlation factors. In Stage II, with the constructed ambiguous common RIS-BS channel, each user uses reduced pilots to estimate their specific user-RIS channel independently so as to obtain the entire cascaded channel. The theoretical number of pilots required for the proposed method is analyzed and the simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of this strategy.

Energy Minimization in RIS-Assisted UAV-Enabled Wireless Power Transfer Systems

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless power transfer (WPT) systems offer significant advantages in coverage and deployment flexibility, but suffer from endurance limitations due to the limited onboard energy. This paper proposes to improve the energy efficiency of UAV-enabled WPT systems with multiple ground sensors by utilizing reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Specifically, the total energy consumption of the UAV is minimized, while meeting the energy requirement of each sensor. Firstly, we consider a fly-hover-broadcast (FHB) protocol, in which the UAV radiates radio frequency (RF) signals only at several hovering locations. The energy minimization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the UAV's trajectory, hovering time and the RIS's reflection coefficients. To solve this complex non-convex problem, we propose an efficient algorithm. Specifically, the successive convex approximation (SCA) framework is adopted to jointly optimize the UAV's trajectory and hovering time, in which a minorization-maximization (MM) algorithm that maximizes the minimum charged energy of all sensors is provided to update the reflection coefficients. Then, we investigate the general scenario in which the RF signals are radiated during the flight, aiming to minimize the total energy consumption of the UAV by jointly optimizing the UAV's trajectory, flight time and the RIS's reflection coefficients. By applying the path discretization (PD) protocol, the optimization problem is formulated with a finite number of variables. A high-quality solution for this more challenging problem is obtained. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the benefits of RIS in energy saving.

An Overview of Signal Processing Techniques for RIS/IRS-aided Wireless Systems

In the past as well as present wireless communication systems, the wireless propagation environment is regarded as an uncontrollable black box that impairs the received signal quality, and its negative impacts are compensated for by relying on the design of various sophisticated transmission/reception schemes. However, the improvements through applying such schemes operating at two endpoints (i.e., transmitter and receiver) only are limited even after five generations of wireless systems. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) or intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) have emerged as a new and revolutionary technology that can configure the wireless environment in a favorable manner by properly tuning the phase shifts of a large number of quasi passive and low-cost reflecting elements, thus standing out as a promising candidate technology for the next-/sixth-generation (6G) wireless system. However, to reap the performance benefits promised by RIS/IRS, efficient signal processing techniques are crucial, for a variety of purposes such as channel estimation, transmission design, radio localization, and so on. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent advances on RIS/IRS-aided wireless systems from the signal processing perspective. We also highlight promising research directions that are worthy of investigation in the future.

Active RIS Versus Passive RIS: Which Is Superior with the Same Power Budget?

This letter theoretically compares the active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided system with the passive RIS-aided system. For fair comparison, we consider that these two systems have the same overall power budget that can be used at both the base station (BS) and the RIS. For active RIS, we first derive the optimal power allocation between the BS's transmit signal power and RIS's output signal power. We also analyze the impact of various system parameters on the optimal power allocation ratio. Then, we compare the performance between the active RIS and the passive RIS, which demonstrates that the active RIS would be superior if the power budget is not very small and the number of RIS elements is not very large.

Robust Transmission Design for RIS-Aided Communications with Both Transceiver Hardware Impairments and Imperfect CSI

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) or intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has recently been envisioned as one of the most promising technologies in the future sixth-generation (6G) communications. In this paper, we consider the joint optimization of the transmit beamforming at the base station (BS) and the phase shifts at the RIS for an RIS-aided wireless communication system with both hardware impairments and imperfect channel state information (CSI). Specifically, we assume both the BS-user channel and the BS-RIS-user channel are imperfect due to the channel estimation error, and we consider the channel estimation error under the statistical CSI error model. Then, the transmit power of the BS is minimized, subject to the outage probability constraint and the unit-modulus constraints on the reflecting elements. By using Bernstein-type inequality and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) to reformulate the constraints, we transform the optimization problem into a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. Numerical results show that the proposed robust design algorithm can ensure communication quality of the user in the presence of both hardware impairments and imperfect CSI.

RIS-Aided D2D Communications Relying on Statistical CSI with Imperfect Hardware

In this letter, we investigate a reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-aided device to device (D2D) communication system over Rician fading channels with imperfect hardware including both hardware impairment at the transceivers and phase noise at the RISs. This paper has optimized the phase shift by a genetic algorithm (GA) method to maximize the achievable rate for the continuous phase shifts (CPSs) and discrete phase shifts (DPSs). We also consider the two special cases of no RIS hardware impairments (N-RIS-HWIs) and no transceiver hardware impairments (N-T-HWIs). We present closed-form expressions for the achievable rate of different cases and study the impact of hardware impairments on the communication quality. Finally, simulation results validate the analytic work.

Long-Term CSI-based Design for RIS-Aided Multiuser MISO Systems Exploiting Deep Reinforcement Learning

In this paper, we study the transmission design for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiuser communication networks. Different from most of the existing contributions, we consider long-term CSI-based transmission design, where both the beamforming vectors at the base station (BS) and the phase shifts at the RIS are designed based on long-term CSI, which can significantly reduce the channel estimation overhead. Due to the lack of explicit ergodic data rate expression, we propose a novel deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) based algorithm to solve the optimization problem, which was trained by using the channel vectors generated in an offline manner. Simulation results demonstrate that the achievable net throughput is higher than that achieved by the conventional instantaneous-CSI based scheme when taking the channel estimation overhead into account.

Ergodic Rate Analysis of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Massive MIMO Systems with ZF Detectors

This letter investigates the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with a two-timescale design. First, the zero-forcing (ZF) detector is applied at the base station (BS) based on instantaneous aggregated CSI, which is the superposition of the direct channel and the cascaded user-RIS-BS channel. Then, by leveraging the channel statistical property, we derive the closed-form ergodic achievable rate expression. Using a gradient ascent method, we design the RIS passive beamforming only relying on the long-term statistical CSI. We prove that the ergodic rate can reap the gains on the order of $\mathcal{O}\left(\log_{2}\left(MN\right)\right)$, where $M$ and $N$ denote the number of BS antennas and RIS elements, respectively. We also prove the striking superiority of the considered RIS-aided system with ZF detectors over the RIS-free systems and RIS-aided systems with maximum-ratio combining (MRC).

Is RIS-Aided Massive MIMO Promising with ZF Detectors and Imperfect CSI?

This paper provides a theoretical framework for understanding the performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with zero-forcing (ZF) detectors under imperfect channel state information (CSI). We first propose a low-overhead minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimator, and then derive and analyze closed-form expressions for the uplink achievable rate. Our analytical results demonstrate that: $1)$ regardless of the RIS phase shift design, the rate of all users scales at least on the order of $\mathcal{O}\left(\log_2\left(MN\right)\right)$, where $M$ and $N$ are the numbers of antennas and reflecting elements, respectively; $2)$ by aligning the RIS phase shifts to one user, the rate of this user can at most scale on the order of $\mathcal{O}\left(\log_2\left(MN^2\right)\right)$; $3)$ either $M$ or the transmit power can be reduced inversely proportional to $N$, while maintaining a given rate. Furthermore, we propose two low-complexity majorization-minimization (MM)-based algorithms to optimize the sum user rate and the minimum user rate, respectively, where closed-form solutions are obtained in each iteration. Finally, simulation results validate all derived analytical results. Our simulation results also show that the maximum sum rate can be closely approached by simply aligning the RIS phase shifts to an arbitrary user.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-aided URLLC in a Factory Automation Scenario

Different from conventional wired line connections, industrial control through wireless transmission is widely regarded as a promising solution due to its reduced cost, increased long-term reliability, and enhanced reliability. However, mission-critical applications impose stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements that entail ultra-reliability low-latency communications (URLLC). The primary feature of URLLC is that the blocklength of channel codes is short, and the conventional Shannon's Capacity is not applicable. In this paper, we consider the URLLC in a factory automation (FA) scenario. Due to densely deployed equipment in FA, wireless signal are easily blocked by the obstacles. To address this issue, we propose to deploy intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to create an alternative transmission link, which can enhance the transmission reliability. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis for IRS-aided URLLC-enabled communications in a FA scenario. Both the average data rate (ADR) and the average decoding error probability (ADEP) are derived under finite channel blocklength for seven cases: 1) Rayleigh fading channel; 2) With direct channel link; 3) Nakagami-m fading channel; 4) Imperfect phase alignment; 5) Multiple-IRS case; 6) Rician fading channel; 7) Correlated channels. Extensive numerical results are provided to verify the accuracy of our derived results.

Different from the existing contributions, the phase shifts of the RIS are designed based on the long-term angle informations. Firstly, an approximate analytical expression of the uplink achievable rate is derived. Then, we use genetic algorithm (GA) to maximize the sum rate and the minimum date rate. Finally, we show that it is crucial to take HWIs into account when designing the phase shift of RIS.
