Controlling structural phases of Sn through lattice engineering

Topology and superconductivity, two distinct phenomena offer unique insight into quantum properties and their applications in quantum technologies, spintronics, and sustainable energy technologies if system can be found where they coexist. Tin (Sn) plays a pivotal role here as an element due to its two structural phases, $α$-Sn and $β$-Sn, exhibiting topological characteristics ($α$-Sn) and superconductivity ($β$-Sn). In this study we show how precise control of $α$ and $β$ phases of Sn thin films can be achieved by using molecular beam epitaxy grown buffer layers with systematic control over the lattice parameter. The resulting Sn films showed either $β$-Sn or $α$-Sn phases as the lattice constant of the buffer layer was varied from 6.10 A to 6.48 A, covering the range between GaSb (closely matched to InAs) and InSb. The crystal structures of the $α$- and $β$-Sn films were characterized by x-ray diffraction and confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy. The smooth and continuous surface morphology of the Sn films was validated using atomic force microscopy. The characteristics of $α$- and $β$-Sn phases were further verified using electrical transport measurements by observing resistance drop near 3.7 K for superconductivity of the $β$-Sn phase and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations for the $α$-Sn phase. Density functional theory calculations showed that the stability of the Sn phases is highly dependent on lattice strain, with $α$-Sn being more stable under tensile strain and $β$-Sn becoming favorable under compressive strain, which is in good agreement with experimental observations. Hence, this study sheds light on controlling Sn phases through lattice engineering, enabling innovative applications in quantum technologies and beyond.

Polar Solvent Vapour Induced Photo-Physical Properties on the Solid-State Organometallic Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

The optoelectric applications, light emitters and photovoltaics, with organometallic halide perovskite materials have been decided by dynamics of charge carriers in grains on the polycrystalline thin films. Especially, polar solvent vapour recrystallizes perovskites and changes their grain sizes. In this paper, various polar solvents were evaluated with density functional theory calculation. And a stociometric treatment with these solvents which enhanced photoluminescence intensity was established. The properties of solvents which caused dramatic photoluminescence enhancement and quantum confinement effect were discussed.

Muon anomalous magnetic moment, $B\to X_s γ$ and dark matter detection in the string models with dilaton domination

We consider the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ$ in the string models with dilaton domination with two different string scales : the usual GUT scale and the intermediate scale. After imposing the direct search limits on the lightest neutral Higgs and SUSY particle masses and the lightest neutralino LSP, the $a_μ^{\rm SUSY}$ is predicted to be less than $65 (55) \times 10^{-10}$ for $M_{string} = 2 \times 10^{16}$ GeV ($3 \times 10^{11}$ GeV). If we further impose the $B\to X_s γ$ branching ratio, the predicted $a_μ^{\rm SUSY}$ becomes lower to $35 \times 10^{-10}$ for intermediate string scale. The resulting LSP - proton scattering cross section is less than $\sim 10^{-7}$ pb, which is below the sensitivity of the current direct dark matter search experiments, but could be covered by future experiments.

Bounds on the Mass and Coupling Constant of Radion in the Randall-Sundrum Theory

Assuming the Goldberger-Wise mechanism, we investigated the effective potential at the one-loop level in the Randall-Sundrum theory. We found the lower and upper bounds of the radion mass m_ϕand the radion-SM coupling constant, 0.8 GeV \lesssim m_ϕ\lesssim 260 GeV and 1400 GeV \lesssim Λ_ϕ\lesssim 1500 GeV for the one-loop level potential. These bounds were determined from two constraints of warp factor = O(M_W/M_{Pl}) and Higgs vev \simeq 246 GeV, which can produce strong bounds of m_ϕand Λ_ϕ. It is phenomenologically important that the one-loop allowed upper bound of the radion mass is about five times larger than the tree-level one, but the radion is still lighter than the Kaluza-Klein modes.

Phenomenology of the radion in Randall-Sundrum scenario at colliders

Phenomenology of a radion ($ϕ$) that stabilizes the modulus in the Randall-Sundrum scenario is considered. The radion couples to the trace of energy momentum tensor of the standard model (SM) with a strength suppressed only by a new scale ($Λ_ϕ$) of an order of the electroweak scale. In particular, the effective coupling of a radion to two gluons are enhanced due to the trace anomaly of QCD. Therefore, its production cross section at hadron colliders could be enhanced, and the dominant decay mode of a relatively light radion is $ϕ$ -> g g, unlike the SM Higgs boson case. We also present constraints on the mass $m_ϕ$ and the new scale $Λ_ϕ$ from the Higgs search limit at LEP and perturbative unitarity bound.
