Edge-on Low-surface-brightness Galaxy Candidates Detected from SDSS Images Using YOLO

Low-surface-brightness galaxies (LSBGs), fainter members of the galaxy population, are thought to be numerous. However, due to their low surface brightness, the search for a wide-area sample of LSBGs is difficult, which in turn limits our ability to fully understand the formation and evolution of galaxies as well as galaxy relationships. Edge-on LSBGs, due to their unique orientation, offer an excellent opportunity to study galaxy structure and galaxy components. In this work, we utilize the You Only Look Once object detection algorithm to construct an edge-on LSBG detection model by training on 281 edge-on LSBGs in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) $gri$-band composite images. This model achieved a recall of 94.64% and a purity of 95.38% on the test set. We searched across 938,046 $gri$-band images from SDSS Data Release 16 and found 52,293 candidate LSBGs. To enhance the purity of the candidate LSBGs and reduce contamination, we employed the Deep Support Vector Data Description algorithm to identify anomalies within the candidate samples. Ultimately, we compiled a catalog containing 40,759 edge-on LSBG candidates. This sample has similar characteristics to the training data set, mainly composed of blue edge-on LSBG candidates. The catalog is available online at https://github.com/worldoutside/Edge-on_LSBG.

Low Surface Brightness Galaxies selected by different model fitting

We present a study of low surface brightness galaxies (LSBGs) selected by fitting the images for all the galaxies in $α$.40 SDSS DR7 sample with two kinds of single-component models and two kinds of two-component models (disk+bulge): single exponential, single sérsic, exponential+deVaucular (exp+deV), and exponential+sérsic (exp+ser). Under the criteria of the B band disk central surface brightness $μ_{\rm 0,disk}{\rm (B) \geqslant 22.5\ mag\ arcsec^{-2}}$ and the axis ratio $\rm b/a > 0.3$, we selected four none-edge-on LSBG samples from each of the models which contain 1105, 1038, 207, and 75 galaxies, respectively. There are 756 galaxies in common between LSBGs selected by exponential and sérsic models, corresponding to 68.42% of LSBGs selected by the exponential model and 72.83% of LSBGs selected by the sérsic model, the rest of the discrepancy is due to the difference in obtaining $μ_{0}$ between the exponential and sérsic models. Based on the fitting, in the range of $0.5 \leqslant n \leqslant 1.5$, the relation of $μ_{0}$ from two models can be written as $μ_{\rm 0,s\acute{e}rsic} - μ_{\rm 0,exp} = -1.34(n-1)$. The LSBGs selected by disk+bulge models (LSBG_2comps) are more massive than LSBGs selected by single-component models (LSBG_1comp), and also show a larger disk component. Though the bulges in the majority of our LSBG_2comps are not prominent, more than 60% of our LSBG_2comps will not be selected if we adopt a single-component model only. We also identified 31 giant low surface brightness galaxies (gLSBGs) from LSBG_2comps. They are located at the same region in the color-magnitude diagram as other gLSBGs. After we compared different criteria of gLSBGs selection, we find that for gas-rich LSBGs, $M_{\star} > 10^{10}M_{\odot}$ is the best to distinguish between gLSBGs and normal LSBGs with bulge.

Star-forming Main Sequence of Giant Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

Giant Low Surface Brightness Galaxies (GLSBGs) are fundamentally distinct from normal galaxies (LSBGs) in star formation and evolution. In this work, we collected 27 local GLSBGs. They have high stellar masses (M*>10^10 Msolar) and low SFRs. With the specific SFRs lower than the characteristic value of the local star-forming (SF) galaxies of M*=10^10 Msolar(sSFR < 0.1 Gyr^-1), GLSBGs deviate from the SF main sequence (MS) defined for local SFGs respectively by E07 and S16 at the high M* regime. They are HI-rich systems with HI gas mass fractions (fHI) higher than the S16 MS galaxies, but have little molecular gas (H2), implying a low efficiency of HI-to-H2 transition due to the low HI surface densities that are far lower than the minimum of 6 - 8 Msolar pc^-2 required for shielding the formed H2 from photodissociation. For GLSBGs, the inner, bulge-dominated part with lower SFRs and higher M* is the main force pulling the entire GLSBG off from the MS, while the outer, disk-dominated part with relatively higher SFRs and lower M* reduces the deviations from the MS. For some cases, the outer, disk-dominated parts even tend to follow the MS. In the aspect of NUV - r versus g - r colors, the outer, disk-dominated parts are blue and behave similarly to the normal star-forming galaxies while the inner, bulge-dominated parts are in statistics red, indicating an inside-out star formation mechanism for the GLSBGs. They show few signs of external interactions in morphology, excluding the recent major merger scenario.

Structure and Color Gradients of Ultra-diffuse Galaxies in Distant Massive Galaxy Clusters

We have measured structural parameters and radial color profiles of 108 ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), carefully selected from six distant massive galaxy clusters in the Hubble Frontier Fields (HFF) in redshift range from 0.308 to 0.545. Our best-fitting GALFIT models show that the HFF UDGs have a median Sérsic index of 1.09, which is close to 0.86 for local UDGs in the Coma cluster. The median axis-ratio value is 0.68 for HFF UDGs and 0.74 for Coma UDGs, respectively. The structural similarity between HFF and Coma UDGs suggests that they are the same kind of galaxies seen at different times and the structures of UDGs do not change at least for several billion years. By checking the distribution of HFF UDGs in the rest-frame $UVJ$ and $UVI$ diagrams, we find a large fraction of them are star-forming. Furthermore, a majority of HFF UDGs show small $\rm U-V$ color gradients within \,1\,*\,$R_{e,SMA}$ region, the fluctuation of the median radial color profile of HFF UDGs is smaller than 0.1\,mag, which is compatible to Coma UDGs. Our results indicate that cluster UDGs may fade or quench in a self-similar way, irrespective of the radial distance, in less than $\sim$ 4 Gyrs.

Hybrid-order topological odd-parity superconductors via Floquet engineering

Having the potential for performing quantum computation, topological superconductors have been generalized to the second-order case. The hybridization of different orders of topological superconductors is attractive because it facilitates the simultaneous utilization of their respective advantages. However, previous studies found that they cannot coexist in one system due to the constraint of symmetry. We propose a Floquet engineering scheme to generate two-dimensional (2D) hybrid-order topological superconductors in an odd-parity superconductor system. Exotic hybrid-order phases exhibiting the coexisting gapless chiral edge states and gapped Majorana corner states not only in two different quasienergy gaps but also in one single quasienergy gap are created by periodic driving. The generalization of this scheme to the 3D system allows us to discover a second-order Dirac superconductor featuring coexisting surface and hinge Majorana Fermi arcs. Our results break a fundamental limitation on topological phases and open a feasible avenue to realize topological superconductor phases without static analogs.

Spin-phonon scattering-induced low thermal conductivity in a van der Waals layered ferromagnet Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$

Layered van der Waals (vdW) magnets are prominent playgrounds for developing magnetoelectric, magneto-optic and spintronic devices. In spintronics, particularly in spincaloritronic applications, low thermal conductivity ($κ$) is highly desired. Here, by combining thermal transport measurements with density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate low $κ$ down to 1 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ in a typical vdW ferromagnet Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$. In the paramagnetic state, development of magnetic fluctuations way above $T_\mathrm{c}=$ 33 K strongly reduces $κ$ via spin-phonon scattering, leading to low $κ\sim$ 1 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ over a wide temperature range, in comparable to that of amorphous silica. In the magnetically ordered state, emergence of resonant magnon-phonon scattering limits $κ$ below $\sim$ 2 W m$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$, which would be three times larger if magnetic scatterings were absent. Application of magnetic fields strongly suppresses the spin-phonon scattering, giving rise to large enhancements of $κ$. Our calculations well capture these complex behaviours of $κ$ by taking the temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent spin-phonon scattering into account. Realization of low $κ$ which is easily tunable by magnetic fields in Cr$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$, may further promote spincaloritronic applications of vdW magnets. Our theoretical approach may also provide a generic understanding of spin-phonon scattering, which appears to play important roles in various systems.

Understanding the chemical evolution of blue Edge-on Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

We present a sample of 330 blue edge-on low surface brightness galaxies (ELSBGs). To understand the chemical evolution of LSBGs, we derived the gas-phase abundance and the [$α$/Fe] ratio. Compared with star-forming galaxies, ELSBGs show a flatter trend in the mass-metallicity ($M_*-Z$) relation, suggesting that the oxygen abundance enhancement is inefficient. We focus on 77 ELSBGs with HI data and found the closed-box model can not explain their gas fraction and metallicity relation, implying that infall and/or outflow is needed. We derived the [$α$/Fe] ratio of normal ELSBG ($<$ 10$^{9.5}$M$\odot$) and massive ELSBG ($>=$ 10$^{9.5}$M$\odot$) using single stellar population grids from MILES stellar library. The mean [$α$/Fe] ratios are 0.18 and 0.4 for normal ELSBG and massive ELSBG, respectively. We discussed that the long time-scale of star-formation, and/or metal-rich gas outflow event caused by SNe Ia winds are likely responsible for the $α$-enhancement of massive ELSBGs.

A Unified and Efficient Coordinating Framework for Autonomous DBMS Tuning

Recently using machine learning (ML) based techniques to optimize modern database management systems has attracted intensive interest from both industry and academia. With an objective to tune a specific component of a DBMS (e.g., index selection, knobs tuning), the ML-based tuning agents have shown to be able to find better configurations than experienced database administrators. However, one critical yet challenging question remains unexplored -- how to make those ML-based tuning agents work collaboratively. Existing methods do not consider the dependencies among the multiple agents, and the model used by each agent only studies the effect of changing the configurations in a single component. To tune different components for DBMS, a coordinating mechanism is needed to make the multiple agents cognizant of each other. Also, we need to decide how to allocate the limited tuning budget among the agents to maximize the performance. Such a decision is difficult to make since the distribution of the reward for each agent is unknown and non-stationary. In this paper, we study the above question and present a unified coordinating framework to efficiently utilize existing ML-based agents. First, we propose a message propagation protocol that specifies the collaboration behaviors for agents and encapsulates the global tuning messages in each agent's model. Second, we combine Thompson Sampling, a well-studied reinforcement learning algorithm with a memory buffer so that our framework can allocate budget judiciously in a non-stationary environment. Our framework defines the interfaces adapted to a broad class of ML-based tuning agents, yet simple enough for integration with existing implementations and future extensions. We show that it can effectively utilize different ML-based agents and find better configurations with 1.4~14.1X speedups on the workload execution time compared with baselines.

A Localization Method of High Energy Transients for All-Sky Gamma-Ray Monitor

Fast and reliable localization of high-energy transients is crucial for characterizing the burst properties and guiding the follow-up observations. Localization based on the relative counts of different detectors has been widely used for all-sky gamma-ray monitors. There are two major methods for this counts distribution localization: $χ^{2}$ minimization method and the Bayesian method. Here we propose a modified Bayesian method that could take advantage of both the accuracy of the Bayesian method and the simplicity of the $χ^{2}$ method. With comprehensive simulations, we find that our Bayesian method with Poisson likelihood is generally more applicable for various bursts than $χ^{2}$ method, especially for weak bursts. We further proposed a location-spectrum iteration approach based on the Bayesian inference, which could alleviate the problems caused by the spectral difference between the burst and location templates. Our method is very suitable for scenarios with limited computation resources or time-sensitive applications, such as in-flight localization software, and low-latency localization for rapid follow-up observations.

Engineering second-order nodal-line semimetals by breaking $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry and periodic driving

Hosting unique drumhead surface states enclosed by nodal lines, topological nodal-line semimetals exhibit novel transport phenomena. Thus, the exploration of topological semimetals with different nodal-line structures has attracted much attention. In this paper, we first find a second-order nodal line semimetal (SONLS), which has coexisting hinge Fermi arcs and drumhead surface states, in a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry broken system. Then, without changing the intrinsic parameters, we artificially create exotic hybrid-order nodal-line semimetals hosted by different quasienergy gaps and rich nodal-line structures including nodal chains, crossing ring nodal nets, crossing line nodes, and nodal nets by applying a periodic driving on our SONLS. Enriching the classification of topological semimetals, such Floquet engineered high tunability of the orders and nodal-line structures of the SONLS sets up a foundation for exploring its further applications.

GECAM Localization of High Energy Transients and the Systematic Error

Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) is a pair of microsatellites (i.e. GECAM-A and GECAM-B) dedicated to monitoring gamma-ray transients including gravitational waves high-energy electromagnetic counterparts, Gamma-ray Bursts, Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters, Solar Flares and Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes. Since launch in December 2020, GECAM-B has detected hundreds of astronomical and terrestrial events. For these bursts, localization is the key for burst identification and classification as well as follow-up observations in multi-wavelength. Here, we propose a Bayesian localization method with Poisson data with Gaussian background profile likelihood to localize GECAM bursts based on the burst counts distribution in detectors with different orientations. We demonstrate that this method can work well for all kinds of bursts, especially for extremely short ones. In addition, we propose a new method to estimate the systematic error of localization based on a confidence level test, which can overcome some problems of the existing method in literature. We validate this method by Monte Carlo simulations, and then apply it to a burst sample with accurate location and find that the mean value of the systematic error of GECAM-B localization is $\sim 2.5^{\circ}$. By considering this systematic error, we can obtain a reliable localization probability map for GECAM bursts. Our methods can be applied to other gamma-ray monitors.

Radio continuum and OH line emission of high-z OH megamaser galaxies

We present the study of arcsecond scale radio continuum and OH line emission of a sample of known OH megamaser galaxies with $z \geq$ 0.15 using archival Very Large Array (VLA) data. And also the results of our pilot Five hundred meter aperture spherical radio telescope (FAST) observations of 12 of these OHM galaxies. The arcsecond-scale resolution images show that the OH emission is distributed in one compact structure and spatially associated with radio continuum emission. Furthermore, nearly all the fitted components are likely smaller than the beam size ($\sim$ 1.4"), which indicates that the broad OH line profiles of these sources originated from one masing region or that more components are distributed in sub-arcsec scales. The radio parameters, including brightness temperature, spectral index, and q-index, show no significant differences with the low-redshift OHM galaxies, which have significantly lower OH line luminosities. Because these parameters are indicators of the central power sources (AGN, starburst, or both), our results indicate that the presence of radio AGN in the nuclei may not be essential for the formation of OH emission. Over 1/3 of OHMs in this sample (6/17) show possible variable features likely caused by interstellar scintillation due to small angular sizes. We might underestimate this value because these sources are associated with this sample's highest OH line flux densities. Those with low OH line flux densities might need higher sensitivity observations to study the variabilities. These results support the compact nature of OH maser emission and a starburst origin for the OHMs in our selected sample.

End-To-End Audiovisual Feature Fusion for Active Speaker Detection

Active speaker detection plays a vital role in human-machine interaction. Recently, a few end-to-end audiovisual frameworks emerged. However, these models' inference time was not explored and are not applicable for real-time applications due to their complexity and large input size. In addition, they explored a similar feature extraction strategy that employs the ConvNet on audio and visual inputs. This work presents a novel two-stream end-to-end framework fusing features extracted from images via VGG-M with raw Mel Frequency Cepstrum Coefficients features extracted from the audio waveform. The network has two BiGRU layers attached to each stream to handle each stream's temporal dynamic before fusion. After fusion, one BiGRU layer is attached to model the joint temporal dynamics. The experiment result on the AVA-ActiveSpeaker dataset indicates that our new feature extraction strategy shows more robustness to noisy signals and better inference time than models that employed ConvNet on both modalities. The proposed model predicts within 44.41 ms, which is fast enough for real-time applications. Our best-performing model attained 88.929% accuracy, nearly the same detection result as state-of-the-art -work.

Optical Observations of the Nearby Type Ia Supernova 2021hpr

We present the optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby Type Ia supernova (SN) 2021hpr. The observations covered the phase of $-$14.37 to +63.68 days relative to its maximum luminosity in the $B$ band. The evolution of multiband light/color curves of SN 2021hpr is similar to that of normal Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) with the exception of some phases, especially a plateau phase that appeared in the $V-R$ color curve before peak luminosity, which resembles that of SN 2017cbv. The first spectrum we observed at t $\sim -$14.4 days shows a higher velocity for the Si II $λ$6355 feature ($\sim$ 21,000 km s$^{-1}$) than that of other normal Velocity (NV) SNe Ia at the same phase. Based on the Si II $λ$6355 velocity of $\sim$ 12,420 km s$^{-1}$ around the maximum light, we deduce that SN 2021hpr is a transitional object between high velocity (HV) and NV SNe Ia. Meanwhile, the Si II $λ$6355 feature shows a high velocity gradient (HVG) of about 800 km s$^{-1}$ day$^{-1}$ from roughly $-$14.37 to $-$4.31 days relative to the $B$-band maximum, which indicates that SN 2021hpr can also be classified as an HVG SN Ia. The evolution of SN 2021hpr is similar to that of SN 2011fe. Including SN 2021hpr, there have been six supernovae observed in the host galaxy NGC 3147, and the supernovae explosion rate in the last 50 yr is slightly higher for SNe Ia, while lower for SNe Ibc and SNe II it is lower than expected rate from the radio data. Inspecting the spectra, we find that SN 2021hpr has a metal-rich (12 + log(O/H) $\approx$ 8.648) circumstellar environment, where HV SNe tend to reside. Based on the decline rate of SN 2021hpr in the $B$ band, we determine the distance modulus of the host galaxy NGC 3147 using the Phillips relation to be 33.46 $\pm$ 0.21 mag, which is close to that found by previous works.

LAMOST MRS-N Observations of the W80 Region

The spectral observations and analysis for the W80 Region are presented by using the data of Medium-Resolution Spectroscopic Survey of Nebulae (MRS-N) with the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopy Telescope (LAMOST). A total of 2982 high-quality nebular spectra have been obtained in the 20 square degree field of view (FoV) which covers the W80 complex, and the largest sample of spectral data have been established for the first time. The relative intensities, radial velocities (RVs), and Full Widths at Half Maximum (FWHMs) are measured with the high spectral resolution of LAMOST MRS, for H$α$ $λ$ 6563 Å, [\ion{N}{ii}] $λ$$λ$ 6548 Å, 6584 Å\ , and [\ion{S}{ii}] $λ$$λ$ 6716 Å, 6731 Å\ emission lines. In the field of view of whole W80 Region, the strongest line emissions are found to be consistent with the bright nebulae, NGC 7000, IC 5070, and LBN 391, and weak line emissions also truly exist in the Middle Region, where no bright nebulae are detected by the wide-band optical observations. The large-scale spectral observations to the W80 Region reveal the systematic spatial variations of RVs and FWHMs, and several unique structural features. A 'curved feature' to the east of the NGC 7000, and a 'jet feature' to the west of the LBN 391 are detected to be showing with larger radial velocities. A 'wider FWHM region' is identified in the eastern part of the NGC 7000. The variations of [\ion{S}{ii}] / H$α$ ratios display a gradient from southwest to northeast in the NGC 7000 region, and manifest a ring shape around the 'W80 bubble' ionized by an O-type star in the L935. Further spectral and multi-band observations are guaranteed to investigate in detail the structural features.

The Data Processing of the LAMOST Medium-Resolution Spectral Survey of Galactic Nebulae (LAMOST MRS-N Pipeline)

The Large sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) medium-resolution spectral survey of Galactic Nebulae (MRS-N) has conducted for three years since Sep. 2018 and observed more than 190 thousands nebular spectra and 20 thousands stellar spectra. However, there is not yet a data processing pipeline for nebular data. To significantly improve the accuracy of nebulae classification and their physical parameters, we developed the MRS-N Pipeline. This article presented in detail each data processing step of the MRS-N Pipeline, such as removing cosmic rays, merging single exposure, fitting sky light emission lines, subtracting skylight, wavelength recalibration, measuring nebular parameters, creating catalogs and packing spectra. Finally, a description of the data products, including nebular spectra files and parameter catalogs, is provided.

Automatic detection of low surface brightness galaxies from SDSS images

Low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies are galaxies with central surface brightness fainter than the night sky. Due to the faint nature of LSB galaxies and the comparable sky background, it is difficult to search LSB galaxies automatically and efficiently from large sky survey. In this study, we established the Low Surface Brightness Galaxies Auto Detect model (LSBG-AD), which is a data-driven model for end-to-end detection of LSB galaxies from Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images. Object detection techniques based on deep learning are applied to the SDSS field images to identify LSB galaxies and estimate their coordinates at the same time. Applying LSBG-AD to 1120 SDSS images, we detected 1197 LSB galaxy candidates, of which 1081 samples are already known and 116 samples are newly found candidates. The B-band central surface brightness of the candidates searched by the model ranges from 22 mag arcsec $^ {- 2} $ to 24 mag arcsec $^ {- 2} $, quite consistent with the surface brightness distribution of the standard sample. 96.46\% of LSB galaxy candidates have an axis ratio ($b/a$) greater than 0.3, and 92.04\% of them have $fracDev\_r$\textless 0.4, which is also consistent with the standard sample. The results show that the LSBG-AD model learns the features of LSB galaxies of the training samples well, and can be used to search LSB galaxies without using photometric parameters. Next, this method will be used to develop efficient algorithms to detect LSB galaxies from massive images of the next generation observatories.

Non-Hermitian Weyl semimetal and its Floquet engineering

It is generally believed that non-Hermiticity can transform Weyl semimetals into Weyl-exceptional-ring semimetals. However, this belief is from the systems without skin effect. We investigate the non-Hermitian Weyl semimental and its Floquet engineering in a system with skin effect, which breaks the bulk-boundary correspondence in its Hermitian counterpart. It is found in both the static and periodically driven cases that the skin effect makes this general belief no longer valid. We discover that exotic non-Hermitian topological matters, e.g., a composite phase of Weyl semimetal and topological insulator with the coexisting Fermi arc and chiral boundary states, a widely tunable Hall conductivity with multiple quantized plateaus, and a Weyl semimetal with anomalous Fermi arcs formed by the crossing of gapped bound state, can be generated by the Floquet engineering. Revealing the leading role of the skin effect in determining the feature of a semimental, our result supplies a useful way to artificially synthesize exotic non-Hermitian Weyl semimetals by periodic driving.
