Universal KPZ scaling in noisy hybrid quantum circuits

Measurement-induced phase transitions (MIPT) have attracted increasing attention due to the rich phenomenology of entanglement structures and their relation with quantum information processing. Since physical systems are unavoidably coupled to environment, quantum noise needs be considered in analyzing a system with MIPT, which may qualitatively modify or even destroy certain entanglement structure of the system. In this Letter, we investigate the effect of quantum noise modeled by reset quantum channel acting on each site with probability $q$ on MIPT. Based on the numerical results from the Clifford circuits, we show that the quantum noise can qualitatively change the entanglement properties - the entanglement obeys ``area law'' instead of ``volume law'' with projective measurement rate $p<p_{c}$. In the quantum noise induced ``area law'' phase, the entanglement exhibits a novel $q^{-1/3}$ power-law scaling. Using an analytic mapping of the quantum model to a classical statistical model, we further show that the ``area law'' entanglement is the consequence of the noise-driven symmetry-breaking field and the $q^{-1/3}$ scaling can be understood as the result of Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) fluctuations of the directed polymer with an effective length scale $L_{\rm{eff}} \sim q^{-1}$ in a random environment.

Topological states in a dimerized system with staggered magnetic fluxes

The bulk-boundary correspondence is a generic feature of topological states of matter, reflecting the intrinsic relation between topological bulk and boundary states. For example, robust edge states propagate along the edges and corner states gather at corners in the two-dimensional first-order and second-order topological insulators, respectively. Here, we report two kinds of topological states hosting anomalous bulk-boundary correspondence in the extended two-dimensional dimerized lattice with staggered flux threading. At $\frac{1}{2}$-filling, we observe isolated corner states with no fractional charge as well as metallic near-edge states in the $\mathcal{C}=2$ Chern insulator states. At $\frac{1}{4}$-filling, we find a $\mathcal{C}=0$ topologically nontrivial state, where the robust edge states are well localized along edges but bypass corners. These robust topological insulating states significantly differ from both conventional Chern insulators and usual high-order topological insulators.

Spectral properties of 1D extended Hubbard model from bosonization and time-dependent variational principle: applications to 1D cuprate

Recent ARPES experiments on doped 1D cuprates revealed the importance of effective near-neighbor (NN) attractions in explaining certain features in spectral functions. Here we investigate spectral properties of the extended Hubbard model with the on-site repulsion $U$ and NN interaction $V$, by employing bosonization analysis and the high-precision time-dependent variational principle (TDVP) calculations of the model on 1D chain with up to 300 sites. From state-of-the-art TDVP calculations, we find that the spectral weights of the holon-folding and $3k_F$ branches evolve oppositely as a function of $V$. This peculiar dichotomy may be explained in bosonization analysis from the opposite dependence of exponent that determines the spectral weights on Luttinger parameter $K_ρ$. Moreover, our TDVP calculations of models with fixed $U=8t$ and different $V$ show that $V\approx -1.7t$ may fit the experimental results best, indicating a moderate effective NN attraction in 1D cuprates that might provide some hints towards understanding superconductivity in 2D cuprates.

Asymptotic sign free in interacting fermion models

As an intrinsically-unbiased approach, quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) is of vital importance in understanding correlated phases of matter. Unfortunately, it often suffers notorious sign problem when simulating interacting fermion models. Here, we show for the first time that there exist interacting fermion models whose sign problem becomes less severe for larger system sizes and eventually disappears in the thermodynamic limit, which we dub as "asymptotic sign free". We demonstrate asymptotically-free sign in determinant QMC for various interacting models. Moreover, based on renormalization-group-like ideas we propose a heuristic understanding of the feature of asymptotic sign free. We believe that asymptotic sign free behavior could shed new lights to deepening our understanding of sign problem. More importantly, it can provide a promising way to decipher intriguing physics in correlated models which were conventionally thought not accessible by QMC.

Interplay between Pair Density Wave and a Nested Fermi Surface

We show that spontaneous time-reversal-symmetry (TRS) breaking can naturally arise from the interplay between pair density wave (PDW) ordering at multiple momenta and nesting of Fermi surfaces (FS). Concretely, we consider pair-density-wave superconductivity on a hexagonal lattice with nested FS at $3/4$ electron filling, which is related to a recently discovered superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Because of nesting of the FS, each momentum $\bk$ on the FS has at least two counterparts $-\bk\pm\mathbf{Q}_α$ ($α=1,2,3$) on the FS to form finite momentum ($\pm\mathbf{Q}_α$) Cooper pairs, resulting in a TRS and inversion broken PDW state with stable Bogoliubov Fermi pockets. Various spectra, including (local) density of states, electron spectral function and the effect of quasi-particle interference, have been investigated. The partial melting of the PDW will give rise to $4\times{}4$ and $\frac{4}{\sqrt{3}}\times\frac{4}{\sqrt{3}}$ CDW orders, in addition to the $2\times2$ CDW. Possible implications to real materials such as CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and future experiments have been further discussed.

Pair-density-wave and chiral superconductivity in twisted bilayer transition-metal-dichalcogenides

We theoretically explore possible unconventional superconductivity induced by weak repulsive interactions in twisted bilayer TMD (e.g. WSe$_2$) in the presence of an out-of-plane electric field. Using renormalization group (RG) analysis, we show that topological chiral superconducting states with Chern number $\mathcal{N}=1,2,4$ (namely $p+ip$, $d+id$, $g+ig$) appear over a large parameter region with moire filling factor around $n=1$. At some special values of applied electric field and in the presence of a weak out-of-plane Zeeman field, spin-polarized pair density wave (PDW) superconductivity can emerge. This spin-polarized PDW state can be probed by experiments such as spin-polarized STM measuring spin-resolved pairing gap and quasi-particle interference. Moreover, the spin-polarized PDW could lead to spin-polarized superconducting diode effect.

Fracton Topological Order at Finite Temperature

As new kinds of stabilizer code models, fracton models have been promising in realizing quantum memory or quantum hard drives. However, it has been shown that the fracton topological order of 3D fracton models occurs only at zero temperature. In this Letter, we show that higher dimensional fracton models can support a fracton topological order below a nonzero critical temperature $T_c$. Focusing on a typical 4D X-cube model, we show that there is a finite critical temperature $T_c$ by analyzing its free energy from duality. We also obtained the expectation value of the 't Hooft loops in the 4D X-cube model, which directly shows a confinement-deconfinement phase transition at finite temperature. This finite-temperature phase transition can be understood as spontaneously breaking the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ one-form subsystem symmetry. Moreover, we propose a new no-go theorem for finite-temperature quantum fracton topological order.

Pair-Density-Wave in the Strong Coupling Limit of the Holstein-Hubbard model

A pair-density-wave (PDW) is a novel superconducting state with an oscillating order parameter. A microscopic mechanism that can give rise to it has been long sought but has not yet been established by any controlled calculation. Here we report a density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of an effective $t$-$J$-$V$ model, which is equivalent to the Holstein-Hubbard model in a strong-coupling limit, on long two-, four- and six-leg triangular cylinders. While a state with long-range PDW order is precluded in one dimension, we find strong quasi-long-range PDW order with a divergent PDW susceptibility as well as the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal and inversion symmetries. Despite the strong interactions, the underlying Fermi surfaces and electron pockets around the $K$ and $K^\prime$ points in the Brillouin zone can be identified. We conclude that the state is valley-polarized and that the PDW arises from intra-pocket pairing with an incommensurate center of mass momentum. In the two-leg case, the exponential decay of spin correlations and the measured central charge $c\approx 1$ are consistent with an unusual realization of a Luther-Emery liquid.

Robustness of Antiferromagnetism in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model

We recently unveiled that antiferromagnetism (AFM) order can be dominantly induced by the bond Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) electron-phonon coupling (EPC), which is beyond the conventional wisdom that AFM order is usually driven by strong Coulomb interactions. Nevertheless, many aspects of the interplay between EPC and strong electronic interactions on AFM ordering remains unexplored. Here, we investigate the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard (SSHH) model with bond SSH phonons and onsite Hubbard interactions by large-scale quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulations and obtain its ground-state phase diagram for various Hubbard interactions and EPC strength at half filling. Our results show that Hubbard interactions further enhance EPC-induced AFM, especially for small phonon frequency or in adiabatic limit, the regime most relevant to various quantum materials. This could shed further light to understanding the cooperative effect between EPC and electronic correlations in quantum materials.

Charge-$4e$ superconductivity from nematic superconductors in 2D and 3D

Charge-$4e$ superconductivity as a novel phase of matter remains elusive so far. Here we show that charge-$4e$ phase can arise as a vestigial order above the nematic superconducting transition temperature in time-reversal-invariant nematic superconductors. On the one hand, the nontrivial topological defect -- nematic vortex -- is energetically favored over the superconducting phase vortex when the nematic stiffness is less than the superfluid stiffness; consequently the charge-$4e$ phase emerges by proliferation of nematic vortices upon increasing temperatures. On the other hand, the Ginzburg-Landau theory of the nematic superconductors has two distinct decoupling channels to either charge-$4e$ orders or nematic orders; by analyzing the competition between the effective mass of the charge-$4e$ order and the cubic potential of the nematic order, we find a sizable regime where the charge-$4e$ order is favored. These two analysis consistently show that nematic superconductors can provide a promising route to realize charge-$4e$ phases, which may apply to candidate nematic superconductors such as PbTaSe$_2$ and twisted bilayer graphene.

Differentiable Quantum Architecture Search

Quantum architecture search (QAS) is the process of automating architecture engineering of quantum circuits. It has been desired to construct a powerful and general QAS platform which can significantly accelerate current efforts to identify quantum advantages of error-prone and depth-limited quantum circuits in the NISQ era. Hereby, we propose a general framework of differentiable quantum architecture search (DQAS), which enables automated designs of quantum circuits in an end-to-end differentiable fashion. We present several examples of circuit design problems to demonstrate the power of DQAS. For instance, unitary operations are decomposed into quantum gates, noisy circuits are re-designed to improve accuracy, and circuit layouts for quantum approximation optimization algorithm are automatically discovered and upgraded for combinatorial optimization problems. These results not only manifest the vast potential of DQAS being an essential tool for the NISQ application developments, but also present an interesting research topic from the theoretical perspective as it draws inspirations from the newly emerging interdisciplinary paradigms of differentiable programming, probabilistic programming, and quantum programming.

Possible superconductivity with Bogoliubov Fermi surface in lightly doped Kagome U(1) spin liquid

Whether the doped t-J model on the Kagome lattice supports exotic superconductivity has not been decisively answered. In this paper, we propose a new class of variational states for this model and perform large-scale variational Monte Carlo simulation on it. The proposed variational states are parameterized by the SU(2)-gauge-rotation angles, as the SU(2)-gauge structure hidden in the Gutzwiller-projected mean-field ansatz for the undoped model is broken upon doping. These variational doped states smoothly connect to the previously studied U(1) $π$-flux or $0$-flux states, and energy minimization among them yields a chiral noncentrosymmetric nematic superconducting state with $2 \times 2$-enlarged unit cell. Moreover, this pair density wave state possesses a finite Fermi surface for the Bogoliubov quasi particles. We further study experimentally relevant properties of this intriguing pairing state.

Variational Quantum-Neural Hybrid Eigensolver

The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is one of the most representative quantum algorithms in the noisy intermediate-size quantum (NISQ) era, and is generally speculated to deliver one of the first quantum advantages for the ground-state simulations of some non-trivial Hamiltonians. However, short quantum coherence time and limited availability of quantum hardware resources in the NISQ hardware strongly restrain the capacity and expressiveness of VQEs. In this Letter, we introduce the variational quantum-neural hybrid eigensolver (VQNHE) in which the shallow-circuit quantum ansatz can be further enhanced by classical post-processing with neural networks. We show that VQNHE consistently and significantly outperforms VQE in simulating ground-state energies of quantum spins and molecules given the same amount of quantum resources. More importantly, we demonstrate that for arbitrary post-processing neural functions, VQNHE only incurs an polynomial overhead of processing time and represents the first scalable method to exponentially accelerate VQE with non-unitary post-processing that can be efficiently implemented in the NISQ era.

Experimental evidence of chiral symmetry breaking in Kekulé-ordered graphene

The low-energy excitations of graphene are relativistic massless Dirac fermions with opposite chiralities at valleys K and K'. Breaking the chiral symmetry could lead to gap opening in analogy to dynamical mass generation in particle physics. Here we report direct experimental evidences of chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) from both microscopic and spectroscopic measurements in a Li-intercalated graphene. The CSB is evidenced by gap opening at the Dirac point, Kekulé-O type modulation, and chirality mixing near the gap edge. Our work opens up opportunities for investigating CSB related physics in a Kekulé-ordered graphene.

Neural Predictor based Quantum Architecture Search

Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) are widely speculated to deliver quantum advantages for practical problems under the quantum-classical hybrid computational paradigm in the near term. Both theoretical and practical developments of VQAs share many similarities with those of deep learning. For instance, a key component of VQAs is the design of task-dependent parameterized quantum circuits (PQCs) as in the case of designing a good neural architecture in deep learning. Partly inspired by the recent success of AutoML and neural architecture search (NAS), quantum architecture search (QAS) is a collection of methods devised to engineer an optimal task-specific PQC. It has been proven that QAS-designed VQAs can outperform expert-crafted VQAs under various scenarios. In this work, we propose to use a neural network based predictor as the evaluation policy for QAS. We demonstrate a neural predictor guided QAS can discover powerful PQCs, yielding state-of-the-art results for various examples from quantum simulation and quantum machine learning. Notably, neural predictor guided QAS provides a better solution than that by the random-search baseline while using an order of magnitude less of circuit evaluations. Moreover, the predictor for QAS as well as the optimal ansatz found by QAS can both be transferred and generalized to address similar problems.

Antiferromagnetism induced by electron-phonon-coupling

Antiferromagnetism (AF) such as Neel ordering is often closely related to Coulomb interactions such as Hubbard repulsion in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Whether Neel AF ordering in 2D can be dominantly induced by electron-phonon couplings (EPC) has not been completely understood. Here, by employing numerically-exact sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we show that optical Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) phonons with frequency $ω$ and EPC constant $λ$ can induce AF ordering for a wide range of phonon frequency $ω>ω_c$. For $ω<ω_c$, a valence-bond-solid (VBS) order appears and there is a direct quantum phase transition between VBS and AF phases at $ω_c$. The phonon mechanism of the AF ordering is related to the fact that SSH phonons directly couple to electron hopping whose second-order process can induce an effective AF spin exchange. Our results shall shed new lights to understanding AF ordering in correlated quantum materials.

Strong Coupling Limit of the Holstein-Hubbard Model

We analyze the quantum phase diagram of the Holstein-Hubbard model using an asymptotically exact strong-coupling expansion. We find all sorts of interesting phases including a pair-density wave (PDW), a charge 4e (and even a charge 6e) superconductor, regimes of phase separation, and a variety of distinct charge-density-wave (CDW), spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting regimes. We chart the crossovers that occur as a function of the degree of retardation, i.e. the ratio of characteristic phonon frequency to the strength of interactions.

Edge current and orbital angular momentum of chiral superfluids revisited

Cooper pairs in chiral superfluids carry quantized units of relative orbital angular momentum (OAM). Various predictions of the intrinsic OAM density or the macroscopic OAM of a two-dimensional chiral superfluid differ by several orders of magnitude, which constitute the so-called Angular Momentum Paradox. Following several previous studies, we substantiate the semiclassical Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory of the single-particle edge current and OAM in two-dimensional chiral superfluids in the BCS limit. The analysis provides a simple intuitive understanding for the vanishing of OAM for a non-p-wave chiral superfluid (such as $d+id$) confined in a rigid potential. When generalized to anisotropic chiral superconductors and three-dimensional chiral superfluids, the theory similarly returns an accurate description. We also present a detailed numerical study of the chiral phases in the BEC limit. Our study suggests that, in both BCS and BEC phases the relative OAM of the individual Cooper pairs contribute to the total OAM additively, and that in both phases the corresponding macroscopic OAM density distribution is localized at the boundary.
