Solving fermion sign problem in quantum Monte Carlo by Majorana representation

In this paper, we discover a new quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method to solve the fermion sign problem in interacting fermion models by employing Majorana representation of complex fermions. We call it "Majorana QMC" (MQMC). Especially, MQMC is fermion sign free in simulating a class of spinless fermion models on bipartite lattices at half filling and with arbitrary range of (unfrustrated) interactions. To the best of our knowledge, MQMC is the first auxiliary field QMC method to solve fermion sign problem in spinless (more generally, odd number of species) fermion models. MQMC simulations can be performed efficiently both at finite and zero temperatures. We believe that MQMC could pave a new avenue to solve fermion sign problem in more generic fermionic models.

Emergent space-time supersymmetry in 3D Weyl and 2D Dirac semimetals

Supersymmetry (SUSY) interchanges bosons and fermions but no direct evidences of it have been revealed in nature yet. In this letter, we observe that fluctuating pair density waves (PDW) consist of two complex order parameters which can be superpartners of the unavoidably-doubled Weyl fermions in three-dimensional lattice models. We construct explicit fermionic lattice models featuring 3D Weyl fermions and show that PDW is the leading instability via a continuous phase transition as short-range interactions exceed a critical value. Using renormalization group, we theoretically show that N=2 space-time SUSY emerges at the continuous PDW transitions in 3D Weyl semimetals, which we believe is the first realization of emergent (3+1)D space-time SUSY in microscopic lattice models. We further discuss possible routes to realize such lattice models and experimental signatures of emergent SUSY at the PDW criticality.

Interaction-driven topological and nematic phases on the Lieb lattice

We show that topological states are often developed in two dimensional semimetals with quadratic band crossing points (BCPs) by electron-electron interactions. To illustrate this, we construct a concrete model with the BCP on an extended Lieb lattice and investigate the interaction-driven topological instabilities. We find that the BCP is marginally unstable against infinitesimal repulsions. Depending on the interaction strengths, topological quantum anomalous/spin Hall, charge nematic, and nematic-spin-nematic phases, develop separately. Possible physical realizations of quadratic BCPs are provided.

Evidence for spin-triplet odd-parity superconductivity close to type-II van Hove singularities

Searching for unconventional Cooper pairing states has been at the heart of superconductivity research since the discovery of BCS superconductors. In particular, spin-triplet odd-parity pairing states were recently revisited due to the possibility of tuning towards topological superconductors. In this context, it is interesting to note a recent proposal that such a spin-triplet pairing instability occurs when the band filling is near van Hove singularities (vHS) associated with momenta away from time-reversal invariant momenta named type-II vHS. However, this result was obtained within a weak coupling renormalization group with Fermi surface patch approximation. To explore superconducting instabilities beyond this weak coupling Fermi surface patch approximation, we perform systematic study on Hubbard model in a two-dimensional square lattice using three different methods: random phase approximation, large-scale dynamical mean field theory simulations with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) impurity solver, and large-scale dynamical cluster simulations with CTQMC cluster solver. We find, in a wide doping range centered around the type-II van Hove filling, a two-fold degenerate, spin-triplet, odd-parity $p$-wave pairing state emerges due to repulsive interaction, when the Fermi surface is not sufficiently nested. Possible relevance of our findings to the recently discovered superconductors LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$, Ir$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$Te$_{2}$ and proposed doped BC$_{3}$ are also discussed.

Dislocation Majorana zero modes in perovskite oxide 2DEG

Much of the current experimental efforts for detecting Majorana zero modes have been centered on probing the boundary of quantum wires with strong spin-orbit coupling. The same type of Majorana zero mode can also be realized at crystalline dislocations in 2D superconductors with the nontrivial weak topological indices. Unlike at an Abrikosov vortex, at such a dislocation, there are no other low-lying midgap states than the Majorana zero mode so that it avoids usual complications encountered in experimental detections such as scanning tunneling microscope (STM) measurements. We will show that, using the anisotropic dispersion of the $t_{2g}$ orbitals of Ti or Ta atoms, such a weak topological superconductivity can be realized when the surface 2DEG of SrTiO$_3$ or KTaO$_3$ becomes superconducting, which can occur through either intrinsic pairing or proximity to existing s-wave superconductors.

Possible Triplet $p+ip$ Superconductivity in Graphene at Low Filling

We study the Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice with nearest-neighbor hopping ($t>0$) and next-nearest-neighbor one ($t'<0$). When $t'<-t/6$, the single-particle spectrum is featured by the continuously distributed Van-Hove saddle points at the band bottom, where the density of states diverges in power-law. We investigate possible unconventional superconductivity in such system with Fermi level close to the band bottom by employing both random phase approximation and determinant quantum Monte-Carlo approaches. Our study reveals a possible triplet $p+ip$ superconductivity in this system with appropriate interactions. Our results might provide a possible route to look for triplet superconductivity with relatively-high transition temperature in a low-filled graphene and other similar systems.

Majorana zero modes in dislocations of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

We study the topologically protected Majorana zero modes induced by lattice dislocations in chiral topological superconductors. Dislocations provide a new way to realize Majorana zero modes at zero magnetic field. In particular, we study several different types of dislocations in the candidate material ${\rm Sr_2RuO_4}.$ We also discuss the properties of linked dislocation lines and linked dislocation and flux lines. Various experimental consequences are predicted which provide a new approach to determine whether nature of the superconducting phase of ${\rm Sr_2RuO_4}.$

Realizing Majorana Zero Modes by Proximity Effect between Topological Insulators and d-wave High-Temperature Superconductors

We theoretically study superconducting proximity effect between a topological insulator (TI) and a high-temperature d-wave superconductor (dSC). When the TI-dSC heterostructure violates 90 degree-rotation and certain reflection symmetries, we show that a sizable s-wave pairing, coexisting with a d-wave one, emerges in the proximity-induced superconductivity in the TI's top surface states. Weak disorder further suppresses d-wave pairing but not s-wave one in the TI's surface states. More importantly, the pairing gap in surface states is found to be nodeless and nearly-isotropic when the Fermi pocket of surface states is relatively small. Our theoretical results qualitatively explain recent experimental evidences of a nearly-isotropic pairing gap on surface states of Bi_2Se_3 induced by proximity with high-T_c cuprate Bi_2Ca_2Cu_2O_{8+δ}. We also demonstrate convincing evidences of Majorana zero modes in a magnetic hc/2e vortex core, which may be detectable in future experiments.

Interaction effect on topological classification of superconductors in two dimensions

We introduce a new class of superconductors (SCs) in two spatial dimensions with time reversal symmetry and reflection (i.e., mirror) symmetry. In the absence of interactions, topological classes of these SCs are distinguished by an integer-valued ($\mathbb{Z}$) topological invariant. When interactions are included, we show that the topological classification is modified to $\mathbb{Z}_8$. This clearly demonstrates that interactions can have qualitative effect on topological classifications of gapped states of matter in more than one dimension.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting ground state in the doped Mott insulator on the honeycomb lattice

The emergence of superconductivity in doped Mott insulators has been debated for decades. In this paper, we report the theoretical discovery of a time-reversal symmetry breaking superconducting ground state in the doped Mott insulator (described by the well known t-J model) on honeycomb lattice, based on a recently developed variational method: the Grassmann tensor product state approach. As a benchmark, we use exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization methods to check our results on small clusters. We find systematic consistency for the ground-state energy as well as other physical quantities, such as the staggered magnetization. At low doping, the superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetic ordering.

Fully gapped topological surface states in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films induced by a d-wave high-temperature superconductor

Topological insulators are a new class of materials, that exhibit robust gapless surface states protected by time-reversal symmetry. The interplay between such symmetry-protected topological surface states and symmetry-broken states (e.g. superconductivity) provides a platform for exploring novel quantum phenomena and new functionalities, such as 1D chiral or helical gapless Majorana fermions, and Majorana zero modes which may find application in fault-tolerant quantum computation. Inducing superconductivity on topological surface states is a prerequisite for their experimental realization. Here by growing high quality topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films on a d-wave superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ using molecular beam epitaxy, we are able to induce high temperature superconductivity on the surface states of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films with a large pairing gap up to 15 meV. Interestingly, distinct from the d-wave pairing of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$, the proximity-induced gap on the surface states is nearly isotropic and consistent with predominant s-wave pairing as revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our work could provide a critical step toward the realization of the long sought-after Majorana zero modes.

Classification of topological insulators and superconductors in the presence of reflection symmetry

We discuss a topological classification of insulators and superconductors in the presence of both (non-spatial) discrete symmetries in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification and spatial reflection symmetry in any spatial dimensions. By using the structure of bulk Dirac Hamiltonians of minimal matrix dimensions and explicit constructions of topological invariants, we provide the complete classification, which still has the same dimensional periodicities with the original Altland-Zirnbauer classification. The classification of reflection-symmetry-protected topological insulators and superconductors depends crucially on the way reflection symmetry operation is realized. When a boundary is introduced, which is reflected into itself, these non-trivial topological insulators and superconductors support gapless modes localized at the boundary.

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Flat Bands with Chern Number Two

Recent theoretical works have demonstrated various robust Abelian and non-Abelian fractional topological phases in lattice models with topological flat bands carrying Chern number C=1. Here we study hard-core bosons and interacting fermions in a three-band triangular-lattice model with the lowest topological flat band of Chern number C=2. We find convincing numerical evidence of bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect at the $ν=1/3$ filling characterized by three-fold quasi-degeneracy of ground states on a torus, a fractional Chern number for each ground state, a robust spectrum gap, and a gap in quasihole excitation spectrum. We also observe numerical evidence of a robust fermionic fractional quantum Hall effect for spinless fermions at the $ν=1/5$ filling with short-range interactions.

Frustrated RVB states in 2D: classifications and short-range correlations

Resonating valence bond (RVB) states are of crucial importance in our intuitive understanding of quantum spin liquids in 2D. We systematically classify short-range bosonic RVB states into symmetric or nematic spin liquids by examining their flux patterns. We further map short-range bosonic RVB states into projected BCS wave functions, on which we perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations without the minus sign problem. Our results clearly show that both spin and dimer correlations decay exponentially in all the short-range frustrated (non-bipartite or $Z_2$) bosonic RVB states we studied, indicating that they are gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquids. Generically, we conjecture that all short-range frustrated bosonic RVB states in 2D have only short-range correlations.

Gapless Spin Liquids: Stability and Possible Experimental Relevance

For certain crystalline systems, most notably the organic compound EtMe3Sb[Pd(dmit)2]2, experimental evidence has accumulated of an insulating state with a high density of gapless neutral excitations that produce Fermi-liquid-like power laws in thermodynamic quantities and thermal transport. This has been taken as evidence of a fractionalized spin liquid state. In this paper, we argue that if the experiments are taken at face value, the most promising spin liquid candidates are a Z4 spin liquid with a pseudo-Fermi surface and no broken symmetries, or a Z2 spin-liquid with a pseudo-Fermi surface and at least one of the following spontaneously broken: (a) time-reversal and inversion, (b) translation, or (c) certain point-group symmetries. We present a solvable model on the triangular lattice with an (a) type Z2 spin liquid groundstate.

Exact Spin Liquid Ground States of the Quantum Dimer Model on the Square and Honeycomb Lattices

We study a generalized quantum hard-core dimer model on the square and honeycomb lattices, allowing for first and second neighbor dimers. At generalized RK points, the exact ground states can be constructed, and ground-state correlation functions can be equated to those of interacting 1+1 dimensional Grassmann fields. When the concentration of second neighbor dimers is small, the ground state correlations are shown to be short-ranged corresponding to a (gaped) spin liquid phase. On a 2-torus, the ground states exhibit fourfold topological degeneracy. On a finite cylinder we have found a dramatic even-odd effect depending on the circumference, and propose that this can be used as a numerical diagnostic of gapped spin-liquid phases, more generally.

Spin Liquid Ground State of the Spin-1/2 Square $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg Model

We perform highly accurate density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations to investigate the ground state properties of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic square lattice Heisenberg $J_1$-$J_2$ model. Based on studies of numerous long cylinders with circumferences of up to 14 lattice spacings, we obtain strong evidence for a topological quantum spin liquid state in the region $0.41\leq J_2/J_1\leq 0.62$, separating conventional Néel and striped antiferromagnetic states for smaller and larger $J_2/J_1$, respectively. The quantum spin liquid is characterized numerically by the absence of magnetic or valence bond solid order, and non-zero singlet and triplet energy gaps. Furthermore, we positively identify its topological nature by measuring a non-zero topological entanglement entropy $γ=0.70\pm 0.02$, extremely close to $γ=\ln(2) \approx 0.69$ (expected for a $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid) and a non-trivial finite size dimerization effect depending upon the parity of the circumference of the cylinder. We also point out that a valence bond solid, and indeed any discrete symmetry breaking state, would be expected to show a constant correction to the entanglement entropy of {\sl opposite} sign to the topological entanglement entropy.

Non-Abelian Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Flat Bands

Inspired by recent theoretical discovery of robust fractional topological phases without a magnetic field, we search for the non-Abelian quantum Hall effect (NA-QHE) in lattice models with topological flat bands (TFBs). Through extensive numerical studies on the Haldane model with three-body hard-core bosons loaded into a TFB, we find convincing numerical evidence of a stable $ν=1$ bosonic NA-QHE, with the characteristic three-fold quasi-degeneracy of ground states on a torus, a quantized Chern number, and a robust spectrum gap. Moreover, the spectrum for two-quasihole states also shows a finite energy gap, with the number of states in the lower energy sector satisfying the same counting rule as the Moore-Read Pfaffian state.
