LIRK-W: Linearly-implicit Runge-Kutta methods with approximate matrix factorization

This paper develops a new class of linearly implicit time integration schemes called Linearly-Implicit Runge-Kutta-W (LIRK-W) methods. These schemes are based on an implicit-explicit approach which does not require a splitting of the right hand side and allow for arbitrary, time dependent, and stage varying approximations of the linear systems appearing in the method. Several formulations of LIRK-W schemes, each designed for specific approximation types, and their associated order condition theories are presented.

Wino dark matter annihilation through the radiative formation of bound states

The most dramatic "Sommerfeld enhancements" of neutral-wino-pair annihilation occur when the wino mass is tuned to near critical values where there is a zero-energy S-wave resonance at the neutral-wino-pair threshold. If the wino mass is larger than the critical value, the resonance is a wino-pair bound state. If the wino mass is near a critical value, low-energy winos can be described by a zero-range effective field theory in which the winos interact nonperturbatively through a contact interaction. The parameters of the zero-range effective field theory can be determined by matching wino scattering amplitudes calculated by solving the Schrödinger equation for a nonrelativistic effective field theory in which the winos interact through a potential due to the exchange of electroweak gauge bosons. The utility of the zero-range effective field theory is illustrated by calculating the rate for formation of an S-wave bound state in the collision of two neutral winos through the emission of two soft photons.

Coherent states in quantum $\mathcal{W}_{1+\infty}$ algebra and qq-character for 5d Super Yang-Mills

The instanton partition functions of $\mathcal{N}=1$ 5d super Yang-Mills are built using elements of the representation theory of quantum $\mathcal{W}_{1+\infty}$ algebra: Gaiotto state, intertwiner, vertex operator. This algebra is also known under the names of Ding-Iohara-Miki and quantum toroidal $\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1)$ algebra. Exploiting the explicit action of the algebra on the partition function, we prove the regularity of the 5d qq-characters. These characters provide a solution to the Schwinger-Dyson equations, and they can also be interpreted as a quantum version of the Seiberg-Witten curve.

Emission of Photons and Relativistic Axions from Axion Stars

The number of nonrelativistic axions can be changed by inelastic reactions that produce photons or relativistic axions. Any odd number of axions can annihilate into two photons. Any even number of nonrelativistic axions can scatter into two relativistic axions. We calculate the rate at which axions are lost from axion stars from these inelastic reactions. In dilute systems of axions, the dominant inelastic reaction is axion decay into two photons. In sufficiently dense systems of axions, the dominant inelastic reaction is the scattering of four nonrelativistic axions into two relativistic axions. The scattering of odd numbers of axions into two photons produces monochromatic radio-frequency signals at odd-integer harmonics of the fundamental frequency set by the axion mass. This provides a unique signature for dense systems of axions, such as a dense axion star or a collapsing dilute axion star.

Dense Axion Stars

If the dark matter particles are axions, gravity can cause them to coalesce into axion stars, which are stable gravitationally bound systems of axions. In the previously known solutions for axion stars, gravity and the attractive force between pairs of axions are balanced by the kinetic pressure. The mass of these dilute axion stars cannot exceed a critical mass, which is about $10^{-14} M_\odot$ if the axion mass is $10^{-4}$~eV. We study axion stars using a simple approximation to the effective potential of the nonrelativistic effective field theory for axions. We find a new branch of dense axion stars in which gravity is balanced by the mean-field pressure of the axion Bose-Einstein condensate. The mass on this branch ranges from about $10^{-20} M_\odot$ to about $M_\odot$. If a dilute axion star with the critical mass accretes additional axions and collapses, it could produce a bosenova, leaving a dense axion star as the remnant.

A numerical study of two-phase flow with dynamic capillary pressure using an adaptive moving mesh method

Motivated by observations of saturation overshoot, this paper investigates numerical modeling of two-phase flow incorporating dynamic capillary pressure. The effects of the dynamic capillary coefficient, the infiltrating flux rate and the initial and boundary values are systematically studied using a travelling wave ansatz and efficient numerical methods. The travelling wave solutions may exhibit monotonic, non-monotonic or plateau-shaped behaviour. Special attention is paid to the non-monotonic profiles. The travelling wave results are confirmed by numerically solving the partial differential equation using an accurate adaptive moving mesh solver. Comparisons between the computed solutions using the Brooks-Corey model and the laboratory measurements of saturation overshoot verify the effectiveness of our approach.

RG-improved Prediction for 750 GeV Resonance Production at the LHC

We present a renormalization-group (RG) improved prediction for $750$ GeV heavy state production recently seen as the diphoton excess at the LHC. Due to the universality of QCD feature in the threshold region, our result provides reasonable estimate of the K-factor for most existing leading order predictions, independent of the specific nature of the resonance. We consider specifically the spin-$2$ warped Kaluza-Klein graviton model to highlight our calculation. We performed soft gluon resummation near threshold at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy together with resumming enhanced corrections from a towers of $π^2$ due to analytic continuation. We find the resummation effects are significant. When matching our resummed result to next-to-leading order calculation, we find our improved predictions exceed the leading fixed-order results by about $56\%$ ($K=1.56$) for the LHC energies at 13 TeV and 14 TeV, and about $63\%$ ($K=1.63$) for 8 TeV.

Holomorphic field realization of SH$^c$ and quantum geometry of quiver gauge theories

In the context of 4D/2D dualities, SH$^c$ algebra, introduced by Schiffmann and Vasserot, provides a systematic method to analyse the instanton partition functions of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories. In this paper, we rewrite the SH$^c$ algebra in terms of three holomorphic fields $D_0(z)$, $D_{\pm1}(z)$ with which the algebra and its epresentations are simplified. The instanton partition functions for arbitrary $\mathcal{N}=2$ super Yang-Mills theories with $A_n$ and $A^{(1)}_n$ type quiver diagrams are compactly expressed as a product of four building blocks: Gaiotto state, dilatation, flavor vertex operator and intertwiner which are written in terms of SH$^c$ and the orthogonal basis introduced by Alba, Fateev, Litvinov and Tarnopolskiy. These building blocks are characterized by new conditions which generalize the known ones on the Gaiotto state and the Carlsson-Okounkov vertex. Consistency conditions of the inner product give algebraic relations for the chiral ring generating functions defined by Nekrasov, Pestun and Shatashvili. In particular we show the polynomiality of the qq-characters which have been introduced as a deformation of the Yangian characters. These relations define a second quantization of the Seiberg-Witten geometry, and, accordingly, reduce to a Baxter TQ-equation in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the Omega-background.

Irregular conformal block, spectral curve and flow equations

Irregular conformal block is motivated by the Argyres-Douglas type of N=2 super conformal gauge theory. We investigate the classical/NS limit of the irregular conformal block using spectral curve on a Riemann surface with irregular punctures, which is equivalent to the loop equation of irregular matrix model. The spectral curve is reduced to the second order (Virasoro symmetry, $SU(2)$ for the gauge theory) and third order ($W_3$ symmetry, $SU(3)$) differential equations of a polynomial with finite degree. The Virasoro and W symmetry generate flow equations in the spectral curve and determine the irregular conformal block, hence the partition function of the Argyres-Douglas theory ala AGT conjecture.

COROLA: A Sequential Solution to Moving Object Detection Using Low-rank Approximation

Extracting moving objects from a video sequence and estimating the background of each individual image are fundamental issues in many practical applications such as visual surveillance, intelligent vehicle navigation, and traffic monitoring. Recently, some methods have been proposed to detect moving objects in a video via low-rank approximation and sparse outliers where the background is modeled with the computed low-rank component of the video and the foreground objects are detected as the sparse outliers in the low-rank approximation. All of these existing methods work in a batch manner, preventing them from being applied in real time and long duration tasks. In this paper, we present an online sequential framework, namely contiguous outliers representation via online low-rank approximation (COROLA), to detect moving objects and learn the background model at the same time. We also show that our model can detect moving objects with a moving camera. Our experimental evaluation uses simulated data and real public datasets and demonstrates the superior performance of COROLA in terms of both accuracy and execution time.

QCD factorization for high $p_T$ heavy quarkonium production

In this talk, we present the QCD factorization formula for heavy quarkonium production at large $p_T$ with factorized leading-power and next-to-leading power contributions in the $1/p_T$ expansion. We show that the leading order analytical calculations in this QCD factorization approach can reproduce effectively the full next-to-leading order numerical results derived using non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism. We demonstrate that the next-to-leading power contributions are crucial to the description of the channels that are the most relevant for the rate as well as polarization of $J/ψ$ production at current collider energies.

Inclusive Higgs Production at Large Transverse Momentum

We present a factorization formula for the inclusive production of the Higgs boson at large transverse momentum $P_T$ that includes all terms with the leading power of $1/P_T^2$. The cross section is factorized into convolutions of parton distributions, infrared-safe hard-scattering cross sections for producing a parton, and fragmentation functions that give the distribution of the longitudinal momentum fraction of the Higgs relative to the fragmenting parton. The infrared-safe cross sections and the fragmentation functions are perturbatively calculable. The factorization formula enables the resummation of large logarithms of $P_T/M_H$ due to final-state radiation by integrating evolution equations for the fragmentation functions. By comparing the cross section for the process $q\bar{q}\to H t\bar t$ from the leading-power factorization formula at leading order in the coupling constants with the complete leading-order cross section, we infer that the error in the factorization formula decreases to less than 5% for $P_T>600$ GeV at a future $100$ TeV collider.

The most important fragmentation functions are those for which the fragmenting parton is the top quark, gluon, $W$, $Z$, and the Higgs itself. We calculate the fragmentation functions at leading order in the Standard Model coupling constants. Fragmentation functions of polarized heavy quarkonium

Study of the polarized heavy quarkonium production in recently proposed QCD factorization formalism requires knowledge of a large number of input fragmentation functions (FFs) from a single parton or a heavy quark-antiquark pair to a polarized heavy quarkonium. In this paper, we calculate these FFs at the input scale in terms of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization. We derive all relevant polarized NRQCD long-distance matrix elements based symmetries and propose a self-consistent scheme to define them in arbitrary $d$ dimensions. We then calculate polarized input FFs contributed from all $S$-wave and $P$-wave NRQCD intermediate states. With our calculation of the polarized input FFs, and the partonic hard part available in literatures, the QCD factorization formalism is ready to be applied to polarized heavy quarkonium production.

Classical Virasoro irregular conformal block II

We present a new systematic way to evaluate the classical limit of the Virasoro irregular conformal block for arbitrary rank n based on the irregular partition function. In addition, we prove that the classical irregular conformal block has the exponential form as suggested by A. Zamolodchikov and Al. Zamolodchikov for the regular case. We provide an explicit calculation for the rank 2 case in detail.

Classical Virasoro irregular conformal block

Virasoro irregular conformal block with arbitrary rank is obtained for the classical limit or equivalently Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit using the beta-deformed irregular matrix model (Penner-type matrix model for the irregular conformal block). The same result is derived using the generalized Mathieu equation which is equivalent to the loop equation of the irregular matrix model.

On an elliptic equation arising from composite materials

In this paper, we derive an interior Schauder estimate for the divergence form elliptic equation \begin{equation*} D_i(a(x)D_iu)=D_if_i \end{equation*} in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where $a(x)$ and $f_i(x)$ are piecewise Hölder continuous in a domain containing two touching balls as subdomains. When $f_i\equiv 0$ and $a$ is piecewise constant, we prove that $u$ is piecewise smooth with bounded derivatives. This completely answers a question raised by Li and Vogelius [7] in dimension 2.

Convolutional Neural Network-Based Image Representation for Visual Loop Closure Detection

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) have recently been shown in many computer vision and pattern recog- nition applications to outperform by a significant margin state- of-the-art solutions that use traditional hand-crafted features. However, this impressive performance is yet to be fully exploited in robotics. In this paper, we focus one specific problem that can benefit from the recent development of the CNN technology, i.e., we focus on using a pre-trained CNN model as a method of generating an image representation appropriate for visual loop closure detection in SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping). We perform a comprehensive evaluation of the outputs at the intermediate layers of a CNN as image descriptors, in comparison with state-of-the-art image descriptors, in terms of their ability to match images for detecting loop closures. The main conclusions of our study include: (a) CNN-based image representations perform comparably to state-of-the-art hand- crafted competitors in environments without significant lighting change, (b) they outperform state-of-the-art competitors when lighting changes significantly, and (c) they are also significantly faster to extract than the state-of-the-art hand-crafted features even on a conventional CPU and are two orders of magnitude faster on an entry-level GPU.
