Self-localization of a single hole in Mott antiferromagnets

A long-standing issue in the physics of strongly correlated electronic systems is whether the motion of a single hole in quantum antiferromagnets can be understood in terms of the quasiparticle picture. Very recently, investigations of this issue have been within the experimental reach. Here we perform a large-scale density matrix renormalization group study, and provide the first unambiguous numerical evidence showing that in ladder systems, a single hole doped in the Mott antiferromagnet does not behave as a quasiparticle. Specifically, the injected hole is found to be always localized as long as the leg number is larger than one, with a vanishing quasiparticle weight and a localization length monotonically decreasing with the leg number. In addition, the single hole self-localization is insensitive to the parity (even-odd) of the leg number. Our findings may advance conceptual developments in different fields of condensed matter physics. First of all, the intriguing self-localization phenomenon is of pure strong correlation origin free of extrinsic disorders. Therefore, it is in sharp contrast to the well-known Anderson localization and recently found many-body localization, where extrinsic disordered potentials play crucial roles. Second, they confirm the analytical predictions of the so-called phase string theory, suggesting that the phase string effect lies in the core of the physics of doped Mott antiferromagnets.

Identifying Topological Order by Entanglement Entropy

Topological phases are unique states of matter incorporating long-range quantum entanglement, hosting exotic excitations with fractional quantum statistics. We report a practical method to identify topological phases in arbitrary realistic models by accurately calculating the Topological Entanglement Entropy (TEE) using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG). We argue that the DMRG algorithm naturally produces a minimally entangled state, from amongst the quasi-degenerate ground states in a topological phase. This proposal both explains the success of this method, and the absence of ground state degeneracy found in prior DMRG sightings of topological phases. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the calculational procedure by obtaining the TEE for several microscopic models, with an accuracy of order $10^{-3}$ when the circumference of the cylinder is around ten times the correlation length. As an example, we definitively show the ground state of the quantum $S=1/2$ antiferromagnet on the kagomé lattice is a topological spin liquid, and strongly constrain the full identification of this phase of matter.

Pair Superfluid and Supersolid of Correlated Hard-Core Bosons on a Triangular Lattice

We have systematically studied the hard-core Bose-Hubbard model with correlated hopping on a triangular lattice using density-matrix renormalization group method. A rich ground state phase diagram is determined. In this phase diagram there is a supersolid phase and a pair superfluid phase due to the interplay between the ordinary frustrated boson hopping and an unusual correlated hopping. In particular, we find that the quantum phase transition between the supersolid phase and the pair superfluid phase is continuous.

Possible proximity of the Mott insulating Iridate Na2IrO3 to a topological phase: Phase diagram of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model in a magnetic field

Motivated by the recent experimental observation of a Mott insulating state for the layered Iridate Na2IrO3, we discuss possible ordering states of the effective Iridium moments in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic field. For a field pointing in the [111] direction - perpendicular to the hexagonal lattice formed by the Iridium moments - we find that a combination of Heisenberg and Kitaev exchange interactions gives rise to a rich phase diagram with both symmetry breaking magnetically ordered phases as well as a topologically ordered phase that is stable over a small range of coupling parameters. Our numerical simulations further indicate two exotic multicritical points at the boundaries between these ordered phases.

Critical theory of the topological quantum phase transition in a spin-2 chain

We systematically study the phase diagram of S=2 spin chain, by means of density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods and confirm the presence of a dimer phase in the AKLT--SZH model. We find that the whole phase boundary between the dimer and SZH phases, including the multicritical point, is a critical line with the same central charge $c=5/2$. Finally, we propose and confirm that this line can be described by the $\rm SO(5)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) conformal field theory.

Topological quantum phase transition in an S=2 spin chain

We construct a model Hamiltonian for S = 2 spin chain, where a variable parameter $α$ is introduced. The edge spin is S = 1 for $α= 0$, and S = 3/2 for $α= 1$. Due to the topological distinction of the edge states, these two phases must be separated by one or several topological quantum phase transitions. We investigate the nature of the quantum phase transition by DMRG calculation, and propose a phase diagram for this model.
