Critical and multicritical Kasner scaling in holographic phase transitions

We study how holographic phase transitions imprint their scaling laws on the local Kasner geometry inside Einstein-scalar black holes. At fixed double-trace coupling, we derive the near-critical scaling of the deviation of the first-epoch Kasner exponent from the Schwarzschild value: $p_t^{(1)}+\frac{1}{3} \propto O^2 \propto (T_c-T)^{1/r}$, where $O$ denotes the boundary condensate and $r$ labels ordinary criticality ($r=1$), tricriticality ($r=2$), and higher multicriticality ($r\geq3$). A super-exponential scalar potential generates a sequence of Kasner epochs separated by scalar-field bounces. We further find that any later epoch that can be tracked continuously across the transition inherits the same temperature exponent, while its coefficient depends on the epoch. Numerical solutions confirm these predictions for the ordinary and tricritical cases. Finally, we show analytically that the leading irrelevant exponent of the infrared fixed point governs the low-temperature Kasner scaling, and verify the resulting scaling numerically for the first Kasner exponent.

Geodesics and shadows of the spindle-deformed Kerr black hole

Recently, a new exact Ricci-flat rotating black-hole solution was constructed in four-dimensional general relativity, in which an additional parameter $B$ characterizes a spindle deformation of the Kerr geometry. We study geodesic motion and black-hole shadows in this spacetime. The Hamilton-Jacobi equation is not exactly separable for either timelike or null geodesics. Remarkably, however, at the leading nontrivial order, ${\cal O}(B^2)$, null but not timelike geodesics become separable. In the timelike sector, the spindle deformation shifts the innermost stable circular orbit and can give rise to an outermost stable circular orbit. In the null sector, exploiting the perturbatively separated equations, we analytically determine the photon region, equatorial photon orbits, and black-hole shadow, and compare the resulting predictions with direct ray tracing in the exact spacetime. The numerical results validate the perturbative treatment and quantify the deviations from Kerr.

Solar-System Bounds on Ricci-flat Spindle Deformations of Schwarzschild

Recently, a new class of deformed black-hole exact solutions was constructed in four-dimensional general relativity. The deformation is controlled by a parameter $B$, which survives after demagnetizing a black hole immersed in an external Bertotti-Robinson magnetic field and changes the global structure of the spacetime into a non-asymptotically flat spindle geometry. Although no astrophysical mechanism for generating such a deformation is currently known, it is natural to ask phenomenologically how large such a geometric deformation could be if it extended over the weak-field solar exterior. Using two classical Solar-System tests, we derive the leading corrections to planetary perihelion precession and to the light travel time in a Shapiro-type configuration. Requiring the \(B\)-induced perihelion advance to be smaller than the observational uncertainties in the supplementary perihelion precessions of planets gives the strongest bounds, \( |B|\lesssim 10^{-24}\text{--}10^{-23}\ {\rm cm}^{-1}\), while a Cassini time delay estimate gives a complementary null-geodesic sensitivity at the level \( |B|\lesssim 10^{-21}\ {\rm cm}^{-1}\). These results show that any such spindle deformation, if extended to the solar exterior geometry, must be extremely suppressed on Solar-System scales.

Black holes and neutron stars in massive Hellings-Nordtvedt theory

Hellings-Nordtvedt theory is a vector-tensor theory in which a vector field $A_\mu$ is nonminimally coupled to curvature through two independent interactions $A^2{\cal R}$ and $A^\mu A^\nu{\cal R}_{\mu\nu}$. When supplemented by a potential whose zero-energy minimum occurs at nonzero $A^2$, the restricted $A^\mu A^\nu{\cal R}_{\mu\nu}$ sector is known to admit black-hole and neutron-star solutions with a monopole-like asymptotic vacuum structure. We examine whether this structure is a generic consequence of the nonzero vector vacuum or instead relies on the special Ricci-tensor coupling. By analyzing the field equations near spatial infinity, we show that the asymptotic vacuum condition is incompatible with generic nonzero values of both couplings and instead selects two allowed single-coupling sectors. The $A^\mu A^\nu{\cal R}_{\mu\nu}$ sector reproduces the known monopole-like asymptotics, whereas the $A^2{\cal R}$ sector admits an asymptotically flat Schwarzschild metric with a nontrivial radial vector field. We further compute the Noether mass in the $A^2{\cal R}$ sector, derive the corresponding Solar-System constraints, and construct neutron-star configurations. Although the weak-field deviation is constrained to be small, neutron stars can still show appreciable departures from both general relativity and the Ricci-tensor-coupling sector in their masses, radii, and moments of inertia. Our results identify that the $A^2{\cal R}$ sector of massive Hellings-Nordtvedt theory as a viable and useful framework for studying strong-field compact objects with a nonzero vector vacuum while remaining compatible with weak-field tests.

Revisiting black holes and their thermodynamics in Einstein-Kalb-Ramond gravity

Einstein-Kalb-Ramond (EKR) gravity is an alternative theory in which a rank-two antisymmetric tensor field, the Kalb-Ramond field, is nonminimally coupled to gravity, potentially generating Lorentz-violating backgrounds. In this work, we revisit black hole solutions and thermodynamics in EKR gravity, addressing subtleties overlooked in previous studies. We obtain two distinct classes of exact static black hole solutions with general topological horizons in diverse dimensions, both with and without a cosmological constant, corresponding to different coupling sectors dictated by the field equations. We analyze their thermodynamic properties and, using the Wald formalism, compute the Noether mass and entropy, establishing the first law and clarifying the role of the Noether mass. Finally, we discuss the implications of this definition of mass for observational constraints in EKR gravity.

Many-body chaos and pole-skipping in holographic charged rotating fluids

Recent developments identify pole-skipping as a `smoking-gun' signature of the hydrodynamic nature of chaos, offering an alternative way to probe quantum chaos in addition to the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC). We study the quantum chaos and pole-skipping phenomenon in the strongly coupled charged rotating fluids, holographically dual to rotating black holes with nontrivial gauge field. We find that the near-horizon equation governing energy-density fluctuations differs from the source-less shock wave equation determining the OTOC, which depends on the $U(1)$ gauge choice. This discrepancy is eliminated under an appropriate boundary condition on the $U(1)$ gauge potential at the event horizon, as required by the vanishing of Wilson loop at the Euclidean horizon. We further investigate the dependence of the butterfly velocity on the charge and rotation parameters in a specific black hole configuration--the Cveti\v{c}-L\"u-Pope solution.

On AdS$_3$/ICFT$_2$ with a dynamical scalar field located on the brane

We exploit holographic duality to study the system of a one-dimensional interface contacting two semi-infinite two-dimensional CFTs. Central to our investigation is the introduction of a dynamical scalar field located on the bulk interface brane which breaks the scaling symmetry of the dual interface field theory, along with its consequential backreaction on the system. We define an interface entropy from holographic entanglement entropy. At zero temperature we construct several illustrative examples and observe that the $g$-theorem is always satisfied. These examples also reveal distinct features of the interface entropy that are intricately linked to the scalar potential profiles. At finite temperature we find that the dynamical scalar field enables the bulk theory to have new configurations which would be infeasible solely with a tension term on the interface brane.

Internal structure of hairy rotating black holes in three dimensions

We construct hairy rotating black hole solutions in three dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to a complex scalar field. When we turn on a real and uniform source on the dual CFT, the black hole is stationary with two Killing vectors and we show that there is no inner horizon for the black hole and the system evolves smoothly into a Kasner universe. When we turn on a complex and periodic driving source on the dual CFT with a phase velocity equal to the angular velocity of the black hole, we have a time-dependent black hole with only one Killing vector. We show that inside the black hole, after a rapid collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge, oscillations of the scalar field follow. Then the system evolves into the Kasner epoch with possible Kasner inversion, which occurs in most of the parameter regimes. In both cases, one of the metric fields obeys a simple relation between its value at the horizon and in the Kasner epoch.

Black hole interiors in holographic topological semimetals

We study the black hole interiors in holographic Weyl semimetals and holographic nodal line semimetals. We find that the black hole singularities are of Kasner form. In the topologically nontrivial phase at low temperature, both the Kasner exponents of the metric fields and the proper time from the horizon to the singularity are almost constant, likely reflecting the topological nature of the topological semimetals. We also find some specific behaviors inside the horizon in each holographic semimetal model.

Properties of gapped systems in AdS/BCFT

We study the conductivities and entanglement structures of two different holographic gapped systems at zero density in the presence of boundaries within AdS/BCFT. The first gapped system is described by the Einstein-scalar gravity and the second one is the dual of AdS soliton geometry. We show that in both these two systems the bulk and boundary conductivities along the spatial direction of the boundary of BCFT are trivial. For the first system, when we increase the size of the subsystem the renormalized entanglement entropy is always non-negative and monotonically decreasing with discontinuous, or continuous, or smooth behavior, depending on the effective tension of the brane. While for the AdS soliton with a boundary, the renormalized entanglement entropy only exhibits a discontinuous drop when we increase the size of the subsystem.

Interior of helical black holes

We study the interior structure of five dimensional neutral helical black holes in Einstein gravity and charged helical black holes in Einstein-Maxwell gravity. Inside the neutral helical black holes, the systems evolve to a stable spacelike Kasner singularity. The metric field related to the helical deformation strength exhibits oscillation behavior close to the horizon at low temperature and small helical deformation strength. Inside the charged helical black holes, we show that the inner Cauchy horizon can not exist. The systems also evolve from the horizon to a stable Kasner singularity. We find that the oscillations can exist and there is a special feature that the oscillations occur near the horizon and before the collapse of the Einstein-Rosen bridge for the charged helical black holes.

Black hole singularities across phase transitions

We study the behavior of black hole singularities across the Hawking-Page phase transitions, uncovering possible connections between the physics inside and outside the horizon. We focus on the case of spacelike singularities in Einstein-scalar theory which are of the Kasner form. We find that the Kasner exponents are continuous and non-differentiable during the second order phase transitions, while discontinuous in the first order phase transitions. We give some arguments on the universality of this behavior. We also discuss possible observables in the dual field theory which encode the Kasner exponents.

On the Size of a Black Hole: The Schwarzschild is the Biggest

We consider static black holes in Einstein gravity and study parameters characterizing the black hole size, namely the radii of the horizon $R_+$, photon sphere $R_{\rm ph}$ and black hole shadow $R_{\rm sh}$. We find a sequence of inequalities $\frac32 R_+\, \le\, R_{\rm ph}\, \le \,\frac{1}{\sqrt3} R_{\rm sh}\,\le\, 3 M$, where $M$ is the black hole mass. These are consistent with and beyond the previously known upper bounds in literature. The Schwarzschild black hole saturates all the inequalities, making it the biggest of all for given mass. The inequalities include an upper bound of entropy for any quantum system with given energy. We also point out that some black holes satisfying the dominant energy condition can trap photons to form a stable photon shield outside the event horizon, but the shadow hides it from an observer at infinity.

${\cal P}-v$ Criticality in Gauged Supergravities

AdS black holes show richer transition behaviors in extended phase space by assuming the cosmological constant and its conjugate quantity to behave like thermodynamic pressure and thermodynamic volume. We study the extended thermodynamics of charged dilatonic AdS black holes in a class of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories that can be embedded in gauged supergravities in various dimensions. We find that the transition behaviors of higher dimensional dilatonic AdS black holes are different from the four dimensional counterparts, and new transition behaviors emerges in higher dimensions. First, there exists standard Van der Waals transition only in a five dimensional dilatonic AdS black hole with two equal charges. Second, there emerge a new phase transition branch in negative pressure region in six and seven dimensional dilatonic black holes with two equal charges. Third, there emerge transition behaviors in higher dimensional black hole with single charge cases, which are absent in four dimensions.
