The process of superradiant phase transition for quantum Rabi model in view of nonclassical states

The ground state of quantum Rabi model (QRM) exhibits rich nonclassical states including squeezed state, cat state, and entangled state in different parameter regimes. In this paper, we firstly use the polaron picture to figure out the process of superradiant phase transition (SPT) in view of the nonclassical states. According to the polaron wave functions, the squeezed state extends to whole parameter regimes, and a small but non-zero weighted antipolaron is necessary to form novel semi-cat states. Moreover, the behavior of superradiance in the QRM can be viewed as the same displacement of the cat states from zero to a finite value, while the ground state becomes entangled state resulting from the emergence of spin-up state. On the other hand, the nonclassical states can be intuitively characterized by the Wigner functions with analytical expressions in the polaron picture, and the Wigner negativity is also evaluated to measure the nonclassicality. Based on the squeezing and superradiance, a classification of the coupling strength for the nonclassical states containing in the ground state is presented, and the process of the SPT is also revealed by the photon number distribution in Fock space, which is important to understand the fundamental quantum physics in the QRM. Our work provides a guidance for preparing the nonclassical states in experiments based on the QRM.

Long-range spin-orbital order in the spin-orbital SU(2)$\times$SU(2)$\times$U(1) model

By using the tensor-network state algorithm, we study a spin-orbital model with SU(2)$\times$SU(2)$\times$U(1) symmetry on the triangular lattice. This model was proposed to describe some triangular $d^1$ materials and was argued to host a spin-orbital liquid ground state. In our work the trial wavefunction of its ground state is approximated by an infinite projected entangled simplex state and optimized by the imaginary-time evolution. Contrary to the previous conjecture, we find that the two SU(2) symmetries are broken, resulting in a stripe spin-orbital order with the same magnitude $m=0.085(10)$. This value is about half of that in the spin-1/2 triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Our result demonstrates that although the long-sought spin-orbital liquid is absent in this model the spin-orbital order is significantly reduced due to the enhanced quantum fluctuation. This suggests that high-symmetry spin-orbital models are promising in searching for exotic states of matter in condensed-matter physics.

Exotic Behavior of Parity in the Superradiant Phase of Quantum Rabi Model

Parity describing the symmetry of quantum mechanics wavefunction under space inversion transformation not only plays an essential role in solving quantum systems but also can be used to manipulate and measure the motional quantum states of such hybrid quantum systems as quantum Rabi model(QRM) and/or its variants through parity measurements. Here we address an exotic parity behavior of the QRM in its superradiant phase by numerical exact diagonalization, namely, the parities of eigenstates of the QRM behave irregular in the strong coupling regime but the sum of parities for each pair of eigenstates beginning from the ground state remains vanishing. It is found that this exotic behavior originates from the comparability of the photon distribution in the odd and even components of Fock basis when the eigenenergies of each pair of eigenstates approach enough to each other and physically is due to the emergent double-well potential induced by the strong coupling between the single-mode photon field and the two-level atom. The result not only uncovers the physics not known previously in the QRM but also makes an intrinsic limitation on the measurement precision of motional quantum states through parity measurements in modern quantum science and technologies.

Characterizing Superradiant Phase of the Quantum Rabi Model

Recently, a superradiant phase transition first predicted theoretically in the quantum Rabi model (QRM) has been verified experimentally. This further stimulates the interest in the study of the process of phase transition and the nature of the superradiant phase since the fundamental role of the QRM in describing the interaction of light and matter, and more importantly, the QRM contains rich physics deserving further exploration despite its simplicity. Here we propose a scheme consisting of two successive diagonalization to accurately obtain the ground-state and excited states wavefunctions of the QRM in full parameter regime ranging from weak to deep-strong couplings. Thus one is able to see how the phase transition happens and how the photons populate in Fock space of the superradiant phase. We characterize the photon populations by borrowing the distribution concept in random matrix theory and find that the photon population follows a Poissonian-like distribution once the phase transition happens and further exhibits the statistics of Gaussian unitary ensemble as increasing coupling strength. More interestingly, the photons in the excited states behave even like the statistics of Gaussian orthogonal ensemble. Our results not only deepen understanding on the superradiant phase transition but also provide an insight on the nature of the superradiant phase of the QRM and related models.

Violation of Luttinger's theorem in the simplest doped Mott insulator: Falicov-Kimball model in strong correlation limit

The Luttinger's theorem has long been taken as the key feature of Landau's Fermi liquid, which signals the presence of quasiparticles. Here, by the unbiased Monte Carlo method, violation of Luttinger's theorem is clearly revealed in the Falicov-Kimball (FK) model, indicating the robust correlation-driven non-Fermi liquid characteristic under any electron density. Introducing hole carriers to the half-filled FK leads to Mott insulator-metal transition, where the Mott quantum criticality manifests unconventional scaling behavior in transport properties. Further insight on the violation of the Luttinger's theorem is examined by combining Hubbard-I approximation with a composite fermion picture, which emphasizes the importance of a mixed excitation of the itinerant electron and the composite fermion. Interestingly, when compared FK model with a binary disorder system, it suggests that the two-peak band structure discovered by Monte Carlo and Hubbard-I approaches is underlying the violation of Luttinger's theorem.

Magnetization of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

After decades of debate, now there is a rough consensus that at zero temperature the spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice is three-sublattice $120^\circ$ magnetically ordered, in contrast to a quantum spin liquid as originally proposed. However, there remains considerable discrepancy in the magnetization reported among various methods. To resolve this issue, in this work we revisit this model by the tensor-network state algorithm. The ground-state energy per bond $E_b$ and magnetization per spin $M_0$ in the thermodynamic limit are obtained with high precision. The former is estimated to be $E_b = -0.18334(10)$. This value agrees well with that from the series expansion. The three-sublattice magnetic order is firmly confirmed and the magnetization is determined as $M_0 = 0.161(5)$. It is about $32\%$ of its classical value and slightly below the lower bound from the series expansion. In comparison with the best estimated value by Monte Carlo and density-matrix renormalization group, our result is about $20\%$ smaller. This magnetic order is consistent with further analysis of the three-body correlation. Our work thus provides new benchmark results for this prototypical model.

Triple-meron crystal in high-spin Kitaev magnets

Spin textures with nontrivial topology hold great promise in future spintronics applications since they are robust against local deformations. The meron, as one of such spin textures, is widely believed to appear in pairs due to its topological equivalence to a half skyrmion. Motivated by recent progresses in high-spin Kitaev magnets, here we investigate numerically a classical Kitaev-$Γ$ model with a single-ion anisotropy. An exotic spin texture including three merons is discovered. Such a state features a peculiar property with an odd number of merons in one magnetic unit cell and it can induce the topological Hall effect. Therefore, these merons cannot be dissociated from skyrmions as reported in the literature and a general mechanism for such a deconfinement phenomenon calls for further studies. Our work demonstrates that high-spin Kitaev magnets can host robust unconventional spin textures and thus they offer a versatile platform not only for exploring exotic states in spintronics but also for understanding the deconfinement mechanism in the condensed-matter physics and the field theory.

Extended high-harmonic spectra through cascade resonance in confined quantum systems

The study of high-harmonic generation in confined quantum systems is vital to establishing a complete physical picture of harmonic generation from atoms and molecules to bulk solids. Based on a multilevel approach, we demonstrate how intraband resonances significantly influence the harmonic spectra via charge pumping to the higher subbands and, thus, redefine the cutoff laws. As a proof of principle, we consider the interaction of graphene nanoribbons, with zigzag as well as armchair terminations, and resonant fields polarized along the cross-ribbon direction. Here, this effect is particularly prominent due to many nearly equi-separated energy levels. In such a scenario, a cascade resonance effect can take place in high-harmonic generation when the field strength is above a critical threshold, which is completely different from the harmonic generation mechanism of atoms, molecules and bulk solids. We further discuss the implications not only for other systems in a nanoribbon geometry, but also systems where only a few subbands (energy levels) meet this frequency-matching condition by considering a generalized multilevel Hamiltonian. Our study highlights that cascade resonance bears fundamentally distinct influence on the laws of harmonic generation, specifically the cutoff laws based on laser duration, field strength, and wavelength, thus unraveling new insights in solid-state high-harmonic generation.

Enhanced superconductivity and various edge modes in modulated $t$-$J$ chains

We numerically investigate the ground state of the extended $t$-$J$ Hamiltonian with periodic local modulations in one dimension by using the density-matrix renormalization group method. Examining charge and spin excitation gaps, as well as the pair binding energy, with extrapolated results to the thermodynamic limit, we obtain a rich ground-state phase diagram consisting of the metallic state, the superconducting state, the phase separation, and insulating states at commensurate fillings. Compared to the homogeneous 1D $t$-$J$ model, the superconductivity is greatly enhanced and stabilized by the flat-band structure. This superconducting state in quasi-periodic chains shares similar properties with ladder systems: significant negative pair binding energy occurs, and the singlet pairing correlation function dominates with the algebraic decay while the single-particle Green's function and spin correlation function decay exponentially. On the other hand, quasi-periodicity leads to nontrivial topological nature in insulating states, characterized by different integer Chern numbers at different fillings. Due to the interplay among the topology, the interaction, and the 1D confinement, gapless edge modes show strong spin-charge separation and in different regions can relate to different collective modes, which are the charge of a single fermion, the magnon, and the singlet-pair. We also find two interaction driven topological transitions: i) at particle filling $ρ=1/2$, the low-energy edge excitations change from the magnon to singlet-pair, accompanied with pair formation in bulk; and ii) at $ρ=3/4$, while the gapless edge mode remains the charge of a single fermion, there is a gap-closing point and a $π$-phase shift in the quasi-particle spectrum.

Quantum tricriticality of chiral-coherent phase in quantum Rabi triangle

The interplay of interactions, symmetries and gauge fields usually leads to intriguing quantum many-body phases. To explore the nature of emerging phases, we study a quantum Rabi triangle system as an elementary building block for synthesizing an artificial magnetic field. We develop an analytical approach to study the rich phase diagram and the associated quantum criticality. Of particular interest is the emergence of a chiral-coherent phase, which breaks both the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and the chiral symmetry. In this chiral phase, photons flow unidirectionally and the chirality can be tuned by the artificial gauge field, exhibiting a signature of broken time-reversal symmetry. The finite-frequency scaling analysis further confirms the associated phase transition to be in the universality class of the Dicke model. This model can simulate a broad range of physical phenomena of light-matter coupling systems, and may have an application in future developments of various quantum information technologies.

Strain-induced phase diagram of the $S = \frac32$ Kitaev material $\rm{CrSiTe_3}$

The interplay among anisotropic magnetic terms, such as the bond-dependent Kitaev interactions and single-ion anisotropy, plays a key role in stabilizing the finite-temperature ferromagnetism in the two-dimensional compound $\rm{CrSiTe_3}$. While the Heisenberg interaction is predominant in this material, a recent work shows that it is rather sensitive to the compressive strain, leading to a variety of phases, possibly including a sought-after Kitaev quantum spin liquid [C. Xu, \textit{et. al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{124}, 087205 (2020)]. To further understand these states, we establish the quantum phase diagram of a related bond-directional spin-$3/2$ model by the density-matrix renormalization group method. As the Heisenberg coupling varies from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic, three magnetically ordered phases, i.e., a ferromagnetic phase, a $120^\circ$ phase and an antiferromagnetic phase, appear consecutively. All the phases are separated by first-order phase transitions, as revealed by the kinks in the ground-state energy and the jumps in the magnetic order parameters. However, no positive evidence of the quantum spin liquid state is found and possible reasons are discussed briefly.

Demystifying strange metal and violation of Luttinger theorem in a doped Mott insulator

Metallic states coined strange metal (SM), with robust linear-$T$ resistivity, have been widely observed in many quantum materials under strong electron correlation, ranging from high-$T_{c}$ cuprate superconductor, organic superconductor to twisted multilayer graphene and MoTe$_{2}$/WSe$_{2}$ superlattice. Despite decades of intensive studies, the mystery of strange metal still defies any sensible theoretical explanation and has been the key puzzle in modern condensed matter physics. Here, we solve a doped Mott insulator model, which unambiguously exhibits SM phenomena accompanied with quantum critical scaling in observables, e.g. resistivity, susceptibility and specific heat. Closer look at SM reveals the breakdown of Landau's Fermi liquid without any symmetry-breaking, i.e. the violation of Luttinger theorem. Examining electron's self-energy extracted from numerical simulation provides the explanation on the origin of linear-$T$ resistivity and suggests that the long-overlooked static fluctuations in literature play an essential role in non-Fermi liquid behaviors in correlated electron systems.

Universality class and exact phase boundary in the superradiant phase transition

The Dicke model and Rabi model can undergo phase transitions from the normal phase to the superradiant phase at the same boundary, which can be accurately determined using some approximated approaches. The underlying mechanism for this coincidence is still unclear and the universality class of these two models is elusive. Here we prove this phase transition exactly using the path-integral approach based on the faithful Schwinger fermion representation, and give a unified phase boundary condition for these models. We demonstrate that at the phase boundary, the fluctuation of the bosonic field is vanished, thus it can be treated as a classical field, based on which a much simplified method to determine the phase boundary is developed. This explains why the approximated theories by treating the operators as classical variables can yield the exact boundary. We use this method to study several similar spin and boson models, showing its much wider applicability than the previously used approaches. Our results demonstrate that these phase transitions belong to the same universality by the classical Landau theory of phase transitions, which can be confirmed using the platforms in the recent experiments.

Hexagon Ising-Kondo lattice: An implication for intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator

Recently, the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ material has been proposed as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFMTI), where the interplay between magnetism and topology induces several fascinating topological phases, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect, Majorana fermions, and axion electrodynamics. However, an exactly solvable model being capable to capture the essential physics of the interplay between magnetism and topology is still absent. Here, inspired by the the Ising-like nature [B. Li \textit{et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{124}, 167204 (2020)] and the topological property of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, we propose a topological Ising-Kondo lattice (TIKL) model to study its ground state property in an analytical way at zero temperature. The resultant phase diagram includes rich topological and magnetic states, which emerge in the model proposed in a natural and consistent way for the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator. With Monte Carlo simulation, we extend the AFMTI ground state to finite temperature. It reveals that topological properties do sustain at high temperature, which even can be restored by elevated temperature at suitable correlation strength. The results demonstrate that TIKL may offer an insight for future experimental research, with which magnetism and transport properties could be fine tuned to achieve more stable and exotic magnetic topological quantum states.

Exactly Solvable Kondo Lattice Model in Anisotropic Limit

In this paper we introduce an exactly solvable Kondo lattice model without any fine-tuning local gauge symmetry. This model describes itinerant electrons interplaying with a localized magnetic moment via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Its solvability results from conservation of the localized moment at each site, and is valid for arbitrary lattice geometry and electron filling. A case study on square lattice shows that the ground state is a Néel antiferromagnetic insulator at half-filling. At finite temperature, paramagnetic phases including a Mott insulator and correlated metal are found. The former is a melting antiferromagnetic insulator with a strong short-range magnetic fluctuation, while the latter corresponds to a Fermi liquid-like metal. Monte Carlo simulation and theoretical analysis demonstrate that the transition from paramagnetic phases into the antiferromagnetic insulator is a continuous $2D$ Ising transition. Away from half-filling, patterns of spin stripes (inhomogeneous magnetic order) at weak coupling, and phase separation at strong coupling are predicted. With established Ising antiferromagnetism and spin stripe orders, our model may be relevant to a heavy fermion compound CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Hg$_{x}$)$_{5}$ and novel quantum liquid-crystal order in a hidden order compound URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$.

Tunable giant magnetoresistance in a single-molecule junction

Controlling electronic transport through a single-molecule junction is crucial for molecular electronics or spintronics. In magnetic molecular devices, the spin degree-of-freedom can be used to this end since the magnetic properties of the magnetic ion centers fundamentally impact the transport through the molecules. Here we demonstrate that the electron pathway in a single-molecule device can be selected between two molecular orbitals by varying a magnetic field, giving rise to a tunable anisotropic magnetoresistance up to 93%. The unique tunability of the electron pathways is due to the magnetic reorientation of the transition metal center, resulting in a re-hybridization of molecular orbitals. We obtain the tunneling electron pathways by Kondo effect, which manifests either as a peak or a dip line shape. The energy changes of these spin-reorientations are remarkably low and less than one millielectronvolt. The large tunable anisotropic magnetoresistance could be used to control electronic transport in molecular spintronics.

Lifshitz Transition in Triangular Lattice Kondo-Heisenberg Model

Motivated by recent experimental progress on triangular lattice heavy-fermion compounds, we investigate possible Lifshitz transitions and the scanning tunnel microscope (STM) spectra of the Kondo-Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. In the heavy Fermi liquid state, the introduced Heisenberg antiferromagnetic interaction ($J_H$) results in the twice Lifshitz transition at the case of the nearest-neighbour electron hopping but with next-nearest-neighbour hole hopping and the case of the nearest-neighbour hole hopping but with next-nearest-neighbour electron hopping, respectively. Driven by $J_H$, the Lifshitz transitions on triangular lattice are all continuous in contrast to the case in square lattice. Furthermore, the STM spectra shows rich line-shape which is influenced by the Kondo coupling $J_{K}$, $J_{H}$ and the ratio of the tunneling amplitude $t_{f}$ versus $t_{c}$. Our work provides a possible scenario to understand the Fermi surface topology and the quantum critical point in heavy-fermion compounds.

Resilience of the superradiant phase against $\mathbf {A^2}$ effects in the quantum Rabi dimer

We explore the quantum criticality of a two-site model combining quantum Rabi models with hopping interaction. Through a combination of analytical and numerical approaches, we find that the model allows the appearance of a superradiant quantum phase transition (QPT) even in the presence of strong $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms, preventing single-site superradiance. In the two-site model the effect of $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms can be surmounted by the photon delocalization from hopping, and a reversed superradiant QPT occurs as a consequence of the competition between $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms and the hopping interaction. We characterize the phase diagram and scaling functions, and extract the critical exponents in the vicinity of the critical point, thus establishing the universal behavior of the second-order phase transition. Remarkably the effective hopping strength will be enhanced if more cavities are cascaded. We also prove that the multi-qubit counterpart of the quantum Rabi dimer, i.e., the Dicke dimer, has the same properties in beating the $\mathbf{A}^2$ effect. Our work provides a way to the study of phase transitions in presence of the $\mathbf{A}^2$ terms and offers the prospect of investigating quantum-criticality physics and quantum devices in many-body systems.
