Rashba induced Kondo screening of a magnetic impurity in two-dimensional superconductor

We study the Kondo screening of a magnetic impurity in a two-dimensional superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). It is found that the Rashba interaction generates a novel Kondo screening channel, in which the local moment is screened by the exchange coupling with conduction electrons in different spin and orbital states. The Kondo temperature associated with this process is determined by the interplay between the Rashba SOC and superconducting energy gap. As a result, the quantum phase transition between the magnetic doublet and Kondo singlet ground states is significantly affected by increasing Rashba SOC in such a system. This result uncovers that the Rashba SOC plays an instructive role and provides a novel screening channel for the Kondo effect, which is expected to be observed in future experiments.

Magnetization jump in one dimensional $J-Q_{2}$ model with anisotropic exchange

We investigate the adiabatic magnetization process of the one-dimensional $J-Q_{2}$ model with XXZ anisotropy $g$ in an external magnetic field $h$ by using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. According to the characteristic of the magnetization curves, we draw a magnetization phase diagram consisting of four phases. For a fixed nonzero pair coupling $Q$, i) when $g<-1$, the ground state is always ferromagnetic in spite of $h$; ii) when $g>-1$ but still small, the whole magnetization curve is continuous and smooth; iii) if further increasing $g$, there is a macroscopic magnetization jump from partially- to fully-polarized state; iv) for a sufficiently large $g$, the magnetization jump is from non- to fully-polarized state. By examining the energy per magnon and the correlation function, we find that the origin of the magnetization jump is the condensation of magnons and the formation of magnetic domains. We also demonstrate that while the experienced states are Heisenberg-like without long-range order, all the \textit{jumped-over} states have antiferromagnetic or Néel long-range orders, or their mixing.

Finite temperature physics of $1D$ topological Kondo insulator: Stable Haldane phase, Emergent energy scale and Beyond

We have studied the one-dimensional $p$-wave periodic Anderson model at finite temperature with the help of the numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the topological Haldane phase established for ground-state is still stable against small thermal fluctuation and its characteristic edge magnetization develops at low temperature. Moreover, the saturated low-$T$ spin structure factor and the $\frac{1}{T}$-law of susceptibility are useful to detect the free edge spin moment, which may be relevant for experimental explorations. We have also comparatively studied the conventional $s$-wave periodic Anderson model, which helps us identify an emergent energy scale $T_{cr}$. $T_{cr}$ signals a crossover into interesting low-$T$ regime and seems to be the expected Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling. Finally, the collective Kondo screening effect has been examined and it is heavily reduced at boundary, which may give a fruitful playground for novel physics beyond the well-established Haldane state and topological band insulators.

Topological phase in $1D$ topological Kondo insulator: $Z_{2}$ topological insulator, Haldane-like phase and Kondo breakdown

We have simulated a half-filled $1D$ $p$-wave periodic Anderson model with numerically exact projector quantum Monte Carlo technique, and the system is indeed located in the Haldane-like state as detected in previous works on the $p$-wave Kondo lattice model, though the soluble non-interacting limit corresponds to the conventional $Z_{2}$ topological insulator. The site-resolved magnetization in an open boundary system and strange correlator for the periodic boundary have been used to identify the mentioned topological states. Interestingly, the edge magnetization in the Haldane-like state is not saturated to unit magnetic moment due to the intrinsic charge fluctuation in our periodic Anderson-like model, which is beyond the description of the Kondo lattice-like model in existing literature. The finding here underlies the correlation driven topological state in this prototypical interacting topological state of matter and naive use of non-interacting picture should be taken care. Moreover, no trace of the surface Kondo breakdown at zero temperature is observed and it is suspected that frustration-like interaction may be crucial in inducing such radical destruction of Kondo screening. The findings here may be relevant to our understanding of interacting topological materials like topological Kondo insulator candidate SmB$_{6}$.

Frequency-renormalized multipolaron expansion for the quantum Rabi model

We present a frequency-renormalized multipolaron expansion method to explore the ground state of quantum Rabi model (QRM). The main idea is to take polaron as starting point to expand the ground state of QRM. The polarons are deformed and displaced oscillator states with variationally determined frequency-renormalization and displacement parameters. This method is an extension of the previously proposed polaron concept and the coherent state expansion used in the literature, which shows high efficiency in describing the physics of the QRM. The proposed method is expected to be useful for solving other more complicated light-matter interaction models.

Inelastic Kondo-Andreev tunnelings in a vibrating quantum dot

Phonon-assisted electronic tunnelings through a vibrating quantum dot embedded between normal and superconducting leads are studied in the Kondo regime. In such a hybrid device, with the bias applied to the normal lead, we find a series of Kondo sidebands separated by half a phonon energy in the differential conductance, which are distinct from the phonon-assisted sidebands previously observed in the conventional Andreev tunnelings and in systems with only normal leads. These Kondo sidebands originate from the Kondo-Andreev cooperative cotunneling mediated by phonons, which exhibit a novel Kondo transport behavior due to the interplay of the Kondo effect, the Andreev tunnelings, and the mechanical vibrations. Our result could be observed in a recent experiment setup [J. Gramich \emph{et al.}, PRL \textbf{115}, 216801 (2015)], provided that their carbon nanotube device reaches the Kondo regime at low temperatures.

Thermoelectric unipolar spin battery in a suspended carbon nanotube

A quantum dot formed in a suspended carbon nanotube exposed to an external magnetic field is predicted to act as a thermoelectric unipolar spin battery which generates pure spin current. The built-in spin flip mechanism is a consequence of the spin-vibration interaction resulting from the interplay between the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling and the vibrational modes of the suspended carbon nanotube. On the other hand, utilizing thermoelectric effect, the temperature difference between the electron and the thermal bath to which the vibrational modes are coupled provides the driving force. We find that both magnitude and direction of the generated pure spin current are dependent on the strength of spin-vibration interaction, the sublevel configuration in dot, the temperatures of electron and thermal bath, and the tunneling rate between the dot and the pole. Moreover, in the linear response regime, the kinetic coefficient is non-monotonic in the temperature $T$ and it reaches its maximum when $k_BT$ is about one phonon energy. The existence of a strong intradot Coulomb interaction is irrelevant for our spin battery, provided that high-order cotunneling processes are suppressed.

Mean photon number dependent variational method to the Rabi model

We present a mean-photon-number dependent variational method, which works well in whole coupling regime if the photon energy is dominant over the spin-flipping, to evaluate the properties of the Rabi model for both the ground state and the excited states. For the ground state, it is shown that the previous approximate methods, the generalized rotating-wave approximation (only working well in the strong coupling limit) and the generalized variational method (only working well in the weak coupling limit), can be recovered in the corresponding coupling limits. The key point of our method is to tailor the merits of these two existing methods by introducing a mean-photon-number dependent variational parameter. For the excited states, our method yields considerable improvements over the generalized rotating-wave approximation. The variational method proposed could be readily applied to the more complex models, for which an analytic formula is difficult to be formulated.

The asymmetric quantum Rabi model in the polaron picture

The concept of the polaron in condensed matter physics has been extended to the Rabi model, where polarons resulting from the coupling between a two-level system and single-mode photons represent two oppositely displaced oscillators. Interestingly, tunneling between these two displaced oscillators can induce an anti-polaron, which has not been systematically explored in the literature, especially in the presence of an asymmetric term. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis of the competition between the polaron and anti-polaron under the interplay of the coupling strength and the asymmetric term. While intuitively the anti-polaron should be secondary owing to its higher potential energy, we find that, under certain conditions, the minor anti-polaron may gain a reversal in the weight over the major polaron. If the asymmetric amplitude $ε$ is smaller than the harmonic frequency $ω$, such an overweighted anti-polaron can occur beyond a critical value of the coupling strength $g$; if $ε$ is larger, the anti-polaron can even be always overweighted at any $g$. We propose that the explicit occurrence of the overweighted anti-polaron can be monitored by a displacement transition from negative to positive values. This displacement is an experimentally accessible observable, which can be measured by quantum optical methods, such as balanced Homodyne detection.

Universal scaling and critical exponents of the anisotropic quantum Rabi model

We investigate first- and second-order quantum phase transitions of the anisotropic quantum Rabi model, in which the rotating- and counter-rotating terms are allowed to have different coupling strength. The model interpolates between two known limits with distinct universal properties. Through a combination of analytic and numerical approaches we extract the phase diagram, scaling functions, and critical exponents, which allows us to establish that the universality class at finite? anisotropy is the same as the isotropic limit. We also reveal other interesting features, including a superradiance-induced freezing of the effective mass and discontinuous scaling functions in the Jaynes-Cummings limit. Our findings are relevant in a variety of systems able to realize strong coupling between light and matter, such as circuit QED setups where a finite anisotropy appears quite naturally.

Kondo screening of Andreev bound states in an N-QD-S system

Motivated by experimental observation of the Kondo-enhanced Andreev transport [R. S. Deacon \textit{et al.}, PRB \textbf{81}, 121308(R) (2010)] in a hybrid normal metal-quantum dot-superconductor (N-QD-S) device, we theoretically study the Kondo effect in such a device and clarify the different roles played by the normal and superconducting leads. Due to the Andreev reflection in a QD-S system, a pair of Andreev energy levels form in the superconducting gap, which is able to carry the magnetic moment if the ground state of the QD is a magnetic doublet. In this sense, the Andreev energy levels play a role of effective impurity levels. When the normal lead is coupled to the QD-S system, on the one hand, the Andreev energy levels broaden to form the so-called Andreev bound states (ABSs), on the other hand, it can screen the magnetic moment of the ABSs. By tuning the couplings between the QD and the normal (superconducting) leads, the ABSs can simulate the Kondo, mixed-valence, and even empty orbit regimes of the usual single-impurity Anderson model. The above picture is confirmed by the Green's function calculation of the hybrid N-QD-S Anderson model and is also able to explain qualitatively experimental phenomena observed by Deacon \textit{et al.}. These results can further stimulate related experimental study in the N-QD-S systems.

Simulating heavy fermion physics in optical lattice: Periodic Anderson model with harmonic trapping potential

Periodic Anderson model (PAM), where local electron orbitals interplay with itinerant electronic carriers, plays an essential role in our understanding on heavy fermion materials. Motivated by recent proposal of simulating Kondo lattice model (KLM) in terms of alkaline-earth metal atoms, we make a further step toward simulation of PAM, which includes crucial charge/valence fluctuation of local f-electron beyond purely low-energy spin fluctuation in KLM. To realize PAM, transition induced by suitable laser between electronic excited and ground state of alkaline-earth metal atoms ($^{1}S_{0}$$\rightleftharpoons$$^{3}P_{0}$) is introduced, and it leads to effective hybridization between local electron and conduction electron in PAM. Generally, the $SU(N)$ version of PAM can be realized by our proposal, which gives a unique opportunity to detect large-$N$ physics without complexity in realistic materials. In the present work, high temperature physical feature of standard ($SU(2)$) PAM with harmonic trapping potential is detailed analyzed by quantum Monte Carlo and dynamic mean-field theory. Indications for near-future experiments are provided. We expect our theoretical proposal and (hopefully) forthcoming experiment will deepen our understanding on heavy fermion systems and at the same time triggers further studies on related Mott physics, quantum criticality and non-trivial topology in both inhomogeneous and nonequilibrium realm.

Numerical method to compute optical conductivity based on pump-probe simulations

A numerical method to calculate optical conductivity based on a pump-probe setup is presented. Its validity and limits are tested and demonstrated via the concrete numerical simulations on the half-filled one-dimensional extended Hubbard model both in equilibrium and out of equilibrium. By employing either a step- or a Gaussian-like probing vector potential, it is found that in nonequilibrium, the method in the narrow-probe-pulse limit can be identified with variant types of linear response theory, which, in equilibrium, produce identical results. The observation reveals the underlying probe-pulse dependence of the optical conductivity calculations in nonequilibrium, which may have its applications in the theoretical analysis of ultrafast spectroscopy measurements.

Superfluid response in heavy fermion superconductors

Motivated by recent London penetration depth measurement [H. Kim et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{114}, 027003 (2015)] and novel composite pairing scenario [O. Erten, R. Flint and P. Coleman, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{114}, 027002 (2015)] on Yb-doped heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_{5}$, we revisit the issue of superfluid response in microscopic heavy fermion lattice model. However, it is found that in literature explicit expression of superfluid response function in heavy fermion superconductor is rare. In this paper, we make a contribution to this issue by investigating superfluid density response function in celebrated Kondo-Heisenberg model. To be specific, we derive corresponding formalism from an effective fermionic large-N mean-field pairing Hamiltonian, whose pairing interaction is assumed to originate from effective local antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. Interestingly, it is found that physically correct superfluid density formula can only be obtained if external electromagnetic field is directly coupled to heavy fermion quasi-particle. Such unique feature emphasizes the key role of Kondo-screening-renormalized quasi-particle for low-temperature/energy thermodynamics and transport behaviors. As an important application, the theoretical result is compared to experimental measurement in heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_{5}$ and Yb-doped Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_{x}$CoIn$_{5}$, where the agreement is fairly good and the transition of pairing symmetry in the latter one is explained as a simple doping effect. In addition, the requisite formalism for the commonly encountered nonmagnetic impurity and non-local electrodynamic effect are developed.

Thermoelectric-induced unitary Cooper pair splitting efficiency

Thermoelectric effect is exploited to optimize the Cooper pair splitting efficiency in a Y-shaped junction, which consists of two normal leads coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor via double noninteracting quantum dots. Here, utilizing temperature difference rather than bias voltage between the two normal leads, and tuning the two dot levels such that the transmittance of elastic cotunneling process is particle-hole symmetric, we find currents flowing through the normal leads are totally contributed from the splitting of Cooper pairs emitted from the superconductor. Such a unitary splitting efficiency is significantly better than the efficiencies obtained in experiments so far.

Phase diagram and topological superfluid state of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with attractive interactions in a one-dimensional optical lattice

Based on density matrix renormalization group method, we investigate the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with attractive interactions in one-dimensional optical lattice and present a complete phase diagram for a quarter-filling system with intermediate strong interactions. We unveil the exotic pairings induced by spin-orbit couplings and the phase transitions between different pairing states, and further demonstrate the existence of the long-sought topological superfluid state at moderate magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling strength. For the particle conserved system, this topological superfluid state can be fixed by its gapless single particle excitation, Luttinger parameter and non-trivial boundary effect. Our study removes out the widespread doubt on the existence of topological superfluid in one dimension and paves the way for simulating topological superfluid states in cold atom settings.

Ground-state phase diagram of the quantum Rabi model

The Rabi model plays a fundamental role in understanding light-matter interaction. It reduces to the Jaynes-Cummings model via the rotating-wave approximation, which is applicable only to the cases of near resonance and weak coupling. However, recent experimental breakthroughs in upgrading light-matter coupling order require understanding the physics of the full quantum Rabi model (QRM). Despite the fact that its integrability and energy spectra have been exactly obtained, the challenge to formulate an exact wavefunction in a general case still hinders physical exploration of the QRM. Here we unveil a ground-state phase diagram of the QRM, consisting of a quadpolaron and a bipolaron as well as their changeover in the weak-, strong- and intermediate-coupling regimes, respectively. An unexpected overweighted antipolaron is revealed in the quadpolaron state, and a hidden scaling behavior relevant to symmetry breaking is found in the bipolaron state. An experimentally accessible parameter is proposed to test these states, which might provide novel insights into the nature of the light-matter interaction for all regimes of the coupling strengths.

Fermionology in the Kondo-Heisenberg model: the case of CeCoIn$_{5}$

Fermi surface of heavy electron systems plays a fundamental role in understanding their variety of puzzling phenomena, for example, quantum criticality, strange metal behavior, unconventional superconductivity and even enigmatic phases with yet unknown order parameters. The spectroscopy measurement of typical heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_{5}$ has demonstrated multi-Fermi surface structure, which has not been in detail studied theoretically in a model system like the Kondo-Heisenberg model. In this work, we make a step toward such an issue with revisiting the Kondo-Heisenberg model. It is surprising to find that the usual self-consistent calculation cannot reproduced the fermionology of the experimental observation of the system due to the unfounded sign binding between the hopping of the conduction electrons and the mean-field valence-bond order. To overcome such inconsistency, we assume that the sign binding should be relaxed and the mean-field valence-bond order can be considered as a free/fit parameter so as to meet with real-life experiments. Given the fermionology, the calculated effective mass enhancement, entropy, superfluid density and Knight shift are all in qualitative agreement with the experimental results of CeCoIn$_{5}$, which confirms our assumption. Our result supports a $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave pairing structure in heavy fermion material CeCoIn$_{5}$. In addition, we have also provided the scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) spectra of the system, which is able to be tested by the present STM experiments.
