Microscopic models for Kitaev's sixteenfold way of anyon theories

In two dimensions, the topological order described by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory coupled to free or weakly interacting fermions with a nonzero spectral Chern number $ν$ is classified by $ν\; \mathrm{mod}\; 16$ as predicted by Kitaev [Ann. Phys. 321, 2 (2006)]. Here we provide a systematic and complete construction of microscopic models realizing this so-called sixteenfold way of anyon theories. These models are defined by $Γ$ matrices satisfying the Clifford algebra, enjoy a global $\mathrm{SO}(ν)$ symmetry, and live on either square or honeycomb lattices depending on the parity of $ν$. We show that all these models are exactly solvable by using a Majorana representation and characterize the topological order by calculating the topological spin of an anyonic quasiparticle and the ground-state degeneracy. The possible relevance of the $ν=2$ and $ν=3$ models to materials with Kugel-Khomskii-type spin-orbital interactions is discussed.

Continuous matrix product operator approach to finite temperature quantum states

We present an algorithm for studying quantum systems at finite temperature using continuous matrix product operator representation. The approach handles both short-range and long-range interactions in the thermodynamic limit without incurring any time discretization error. Moreover, the approach provides direct access to physical observables including the specific heat, local susceptibility, and local spectral functions. After verifying the method using the prototypical quantum XXZ chains, we apply it to quantum Ising models with power-law decaying interactions and on the infinite cylinder, respectively. The approach offers predictions that are relevant to experiments in quantum simulators and the nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice relaxation rate.

Quantum phases of two-component bosons on the Harper-Hofstadter ladder

We study two-component bosons on the Harper-Hofstadter model with two legs. The synthetic magnetic fields for the two types of bosons point to either the same direction or opposite directions. The bosons have hardcore intra-species interaction such that there can be no more than one boson of the same type on each lattice site. For certain filling factors in the absence of inter-species interaction, each component realizes a vortex Mott insulator with rung current or a Meissner superfluid without rung current. The system undergoes phase transitions to other phases as inter-species interaction is turned on, which are characterized numerically using the density matrix renormalization group method and supplemented with analytical studies when possible. The vortex Mott insulator transits to a gapped Meissner phase without rung current and the Meissner superfluid transits to a gapped vortex phase with rung current. In both cases, we observe gapped spin density wave states that break certain ${\mathbb Z}_{2}$ symmetries.

Critical properties of the two-dimensional $q$-state clock model

We perform the state-of-the-art tensor network simulations directly in the thermodynamic limit to clarify the critical properties of the $q$-state clock model on the square lattice. We determine accurately the two phase transition temperatures through the singularity of the classical analog of the entanglement entropy, and provide extensive numerical evidences to show that both transitions are of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type for $q\ge 5$ and that the low-energy physics of this model is well described by the $\mathbb{Z}_q$-deformed sine-Gordon theory. We also determine the characteristic conformal parameters, especially the compactification radius, that govern the critical properties of the intermediate BKT phase.

Tensor network representations of parton wave functions

Tensor network states and parton wave functions are two pivotal methods for studying quantum many-body systems. This work connects these two subjects as we demonstrate that a variety of parton wave functions, such as projected Fermi sea and projected fermionic or bosonic paired states, can be represented exactly as tensor networks. The results can be compressed into matrix product states with moderate bond dimensions so various physical quantities can be computed efficiently. For the projected Fermi sea, we develop an excellent compression scheme with high fidelity using maximally localized Wannier orbitals. Numerical calculations on two parton wave functions demonstrate that our method exceeds commonly adopted Monte Carlo methods in some aspects. It produces energy and correlation function with very high accuracy that is difficult to achieve using Monte Carlo method. The entanglement measures that were almost impossible to compute before can also be obtained easily using our method.

Efficient tensor network representation for Gutzwiller projected states of paired fermions

Recent work by Wu {\em et al.} [arXiv:1910.11011] proposed a numerical method, so-called matrix product operator-matrix product state (MPO-MPS) method, by which several types of quantum many-body wave functions, in particular, the projected Fermi sea state, can be efficiently represented as a tensor network. In this paper, we generalize the MPO-MPS method to study Gutzwiller projected paired states of fermions, where the maximally localized Wannier orbitals for Bogoliubov quasiparticles/quasiholes have been adapted to improve the computational performance. The study of $SO(3)$-symmetric spin-1 chains reveals that this new method has better performance than variational Monte Carlo for gapped states and similar performance for gapless states. Moreover, we demonstrate that dynamic correlation functions can be easily evaluated by this method cooperating with other MPS-based accurate approaches, such as the Chebyshev MPS method.

Quantum impurity models from conformal field theory

The coupling between localized magnetic moments and itinerant electrons presents a plethora of interesting physics. The low-energy physics of some quantum impurity systems can be described using conformal field theory (CFT). In this paper, the connection between quantum impurity models and CFT is further strengthened as we construct a class of exactly solvable models with ground states given by CFT correlators. The method developed here is completely analytical and can be applied to fermions with an arbitrary number of colors and multiple impurities. Numerical calculations are performed to characterize certain aspects of our models for which we do not have analytical results.

Quantized thermal Hall conductance from edge current calculations in lattice models

The quantized thermal Hall effect is an important probe for detecting chiral topological order and revealing the nature of chiral gapless edge states. The standard Kubo formula approach for the thermal Hall conductance $κ_{xy}$ based on the linear-response theory faces difficulties in practical application due to the lack of a reliable numerical method for calculating dynamical quantities in microscopic models at finite temperature. In this work, we propose an approach for calculating $κ_{xy}$ in two-dimensional lattice models displaying chiral topological order. Our approach targets at the edge current localized at the boundary which involves only thermal averages of local operators in equilibrium, thus drastically lowering the barrier for the calculation of $κ_{xy}$. We use the chiral $p$-wave superconductor (with and without disorder) and the Hofstadter model as benchmark examples to illustrate several sources of finite-size effects, and we suggest the infinite (or sufficiently long) strip as the best geometry for carrying out numerical simulations.

Exactly solvable quantum impurity model with inverse-square interactions

We construct an exactly solvable quantum impurity model which consists of spin-1/2 conduction fermions and the spin-1/2 magnetic moment. The ground state is a Gutzwiller projected Fermi sea with non-orthonormal modes and its wave function in the site-occupation basis is a Jastrow-type homogeneous polynomial. The parent Hamiltonian has all-to-all inverse-square hopping terms between the conduction fermions and inverse-square spin-exchange terms between the conduction fermions and the magnetic moments. The low-lying energy levels, spin-spin correlation function, and von Neumann entanglement entropy of our model demonstrate that it exhibits the essential aspects of spin-1/2 Kondo physics. The machinery developed in this work can generate many other exactly solvable quantum impurity models.

Klein bottle entropy of compactified boson conformal field theory

We extend the scope of the Klein bottle entropy, originally introduced by [Tu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 261603 (2017)] in the rational conformal field theory (CFT), to the compactified boson CFT, which are relevant to the studies of Luttinger liquids. We first review the Klein bottle entropy in rational CFT and discuss details of how to extract the Klein bottle entropy from lattice models using the example of the transverse field Ising model. We then go beyond the scope of rational CFT and study the Klein bottle entropy $\ln g$ in the compactified boson CFT, which turns out to have a straightforward relation to the compactification radius $R$, $\ln g = \ln R$. This relation indicates a convenient and efficient method to extract the Luttinger parameter from lattice model calculations. Our numerical results on the Klein bottle entropy in the spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain show excellent agreement with the CFT predictions, up to some small deviations near the isotropic point, which we attribute to the marginally irrelevant terms. For the $S = 1$ XXZ chain that cannot be exactly solved, our numerical results provide an accurate numerical determination of the Luttinger parameter in this model.

SU(3) trimer resonating-valence-bond state on the square lattice

We propose and study an SU(3) trimer resonating-valence-bond (tRVB) state with $C_{4v}$ point-group symmetry on the square lattice. By devising a projected entangled-pair state representation, we show that all (connected) correlation functions between local operators in this SU(3) tRVB state decay exponentially, indicating its gapped nature. We further calculate the modular $S$ and $T$ matrices by constructing all nine topological sectors on a torus and establish the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ topological order in this SU(3) tRVB state.

Possible SU(3) Chiral Spin Liquid on the Kagome Lattice

We propose an SU(3) symmetric Hamiltonian with short-range interactions on the Kagome lattice and show that it hosts an Abelian chiral spin liquid (CSL) state. We provide numerical evidence based on exact diagonalization to show that this CSL state is stabilized in an extended region of the parameter space and can be viewed as a lattice version of the Halperin 221 fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state of two-component bosons. We also construct a parton wave function for this CSL state and demonstrate that its variational energies are in good agreement with exact diagonalization results. The parton description further supports that the CSL is characterized by a chiral edge conformal field theory (CFT) of the SU(3)_1 Wess-Zumino-Witten type.

Non-Abelian Chiral Spin Liquid on the Kagome Lattice

We study $S=1$ spin liquid states on the kagome lattice constructed by Gutzwiller-projected $p_x+ip_y$ superconductors. We show that the obtained spin liquids are either non-Abelian or Abelian topological phases, depending on the topology of the fermionic mean-field state. By calculating the modular matrices $S$ and $T$, we confirm that projected topological superconductors are non-Abelian chiral spin liquid (NACSL). The chiral central charge and the spin Hall conductance we obtained agree very well with the $SO(3)_1$ (or, equivalently, $SU(2)_2$) field theory predictions. We propose a local Hamiltonian which may stabilize the NACSL. From a variational study we observe a topological phase transition from the NACSL to the $Z_2$ Abelian spin liquid.

Universal entropy of conformal critical theories on a Klein bottle

We show that rational conformal field theories in 1+1 dimensions on a Klein bottle, with length $L$ and width $β$, satisfying $L \gg β$, have a universal entropy. This universal entropy is a topological invariant depending on the quantum dimensions of the primary fields and can be accurately extracted by taking a proper ratio between the Klein bottle and torus partition functions, enabling a characterization of conformal critical theories. The result is checked against exact calculations in quantum spin-1/2 XY and Ising chains.

Universal Boundary Entropies in Conformal Field Theory: A Quantum Monte Carlo Study

Recently, entropy corrections on nonorientable manifolds such as the Klein bottle are proposed as a universal characterization of critical systems with an emergent conformal field theory (CFT). We show that entropy correction on the Klein bottle can be interpreted as a boundary effect via transforming the Klein bottle into an orientable manifold with nonlocal boundary interactions. The interpretation reveals the conceptual connection of the Klein bottle entropy with the celebrated Affleck-Ludwig entropy in boundary CFT. We propose a generic scheme to extract these universal boundary entropies from quantum Monte Carlo calculation of partition function ratios in lattice models. Our numerical results on the Affleck-Ludwig entropy and Klein bottle entropy for the $q$-state quantum Potts chains with $q=2,3$ show excellent agreement with the CFT predictions. For the quantum Potts chain with $q=4$, the Klein bottle entropy slightly deviates from the CFT prediction, which is possibly due to marginally irrelevant terms in the low-energy effective theory.

Fractional quantum Hall states of bosons on cones

Motivated by a recent experiment which synthesizes Landau levels for photons on cones [Schine {\em et al.}, Nature 534, 671 (2016)], and more generally the interest in understanding gravitational responses of quantum Hall states, we study fractional quantum Hall states of bosons on cones. A variety of trial wave functions for conical systems are constructed and compared with exact diagonalization results. The tip of a cone is a localized geometrical defect with singular curvature which can modify the density profiles of quantum Hall states. The density profiles on cones can be used to extract some universal information about quantum Hall states. The values of certain quantities are computed numerically using the density profiles of some quantum Hall states and they agree with analytical predictions.

Parent Hamiltonians for lattice Halperin states from free-boson conformal field theories

We introduce a family of many-body quantum states that describe interacting spin one-half hard-core particles with bosonic or fermionic statistics on arbitrary one- and two-dimensional lattices. The wave functions at lattice filling fraction $ν=2/(2m+1)$ are derived from deformations of the Wess-Zumino-Witten model $\mathfrak{su}(3)_1$ and are related to the $(m+1,m+1,m)$ Halperin fractional quantum Hall states. We derive long-range SU(2) invariant parent Hamiltonians for these states which in two dimensions are chiral $t$-$J$-$V$ models with additional three-body interaction terms. In one dimension we obtain a generalisation to open chains of a periodic inverse-square $t$-$J$-$V$ model proposed in [Z. N. C. Ha and F. D. M. Haldane, Phys. Rev. B $\mathbf{46}$, 9359 (1992)]. We observe that the gapless low-energy spectrum of this model and its open-boundary generalisation can be described by rapidity sets with the same generalised Pauli exclusion principle. A two-component compactified free boson conformal field theory is identified that has the same central charge and scaling dimensions as the periodic bosonic inverse-square $t$-$J$-$V$ model.

Many-body Lattice Wavefunctions From Conformal Blocks

We introduce a general framework to construct many-body lattice wavefunctions starting from the conformal blocks (CBs) of rational conformal field theories (RCFTs). We discuss the different ways of encoding the physical degrees of freedom of the lattice system using both the internal symmetries of the theory and the fusion channels of the CBs. We illustrate this construction both by revisiting the known Haldane-Shastry model and by providing a novel implementation for the Ising RCFT. In the latter case, we find a connection to the Ising transverse field (ITF) spin chain via the Kramers-Wannier duality and the Temperley-Lieb-Jones algebra. We also find evidence that the ground state of the finite-size critical ITF Hamiltonian corresponds exactly to the wavefunction obtained from CBs of spin fields.
