Probing Robust Majorana Signatures by Crossed Andreev Reflection with a Quantum Dot

We propose a three-terminal structure to probe robust signatures of Majorana zero modes. This structure consists of a quantum dot coupled to the normal metal, s-wave superconducting and Majorana Y-junction leads. The zero-bias differential conductance at zero temperature of the normal-metal lead peaks at $2e^{2}/h$, which will be deflected after Majorana braiding. This quantized conductance can entirely arise from the Majorana-induced crossed Andreev reflection, protected by the energy gap of the superconducting lead. We find that the effect of thermal broadening is significantly suppressed when the dot is on resonance. In the case that the energy level of the quantum dot is much larger than the superconducting gap, tunneling processes are dominated by Majorana-induced crossed Andreev reflection. Particularly, a novel kind of crossed Andreev reflection equivalent to the splitting of charge quanta $3e$ occurs after Majorana braiding.

Vector dark matter production from catalyzed annihilation

We provide a simple model of vector dark matter (DM) which can realize the recently proposed freeze-out mechanism with catalyzed annihilation. In our setup, a vector DM field $X_μ$ and a catalyst field $C_μ$ is unified by an SU(2)$_D$ gauge symmetry. These gauge fields acquire their masses via spontaneously symmetry breaking triggered by a doublet and a real triplet scalar fields. The catalyst particle is automatically lighter than the DM since it only acquires mass from the vacuum expectation value of the doublet scalar. We also introduce a dimension-5 operator to generate a kinetic mixing term between $C_μ$ and the U(1)$_Y$ gauge field $B_μ$. This mixing term is naturally small due to a suppression with a high UV completion scale, and thus it allows the catalyst to decay after the DM freeze-out. We derive the annihilation cross sections of processes $X^\ast+X\to 2C$ and $3C\to X^\ast+X$ and solve the Boltzmann equations for both the DM and the catalyst. We develop the analytical approximate solutions of the equations and find them matching the numerical solutions well. Constraints from relic abundance and indirect detection of DM are considered. We find that the DM with a mass $m_X\gtrsim4.5$~TeV survives in the case of a long-living catalyst. On the other hand, if the catalyst decays during the catalyzed annihilation era, then the bound can be released. We also discuss two paradigms which can maintain the kinetic equilibrium of DM until the DM freeze-out. In both cases, the freeze-out temperature of DM is an order of magnitude higher than the original model.

Cancellation mechanism of dark matter direct detection in Higgs-portal and vector-portal models

We present two alternative proofs for the cancellation mechanism in the U(1) symmetric pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone-Boson Dark Matter (pNGB DM) model. They help us to have a better understanding of the mechanism from multi-angle, and inspire us to propose some interesting generalizations. In the first proof, we revisit the non-linear representation method and rephrase the argument with the interaction eigenstates. In this picture, the phase mode (DM) can only have a trilinear interaction with a derivative-squared acting on the radial mode when the DM is on-shell. Thus, the DM-quark scattering generated by a mass mixing between the radial mode and the Higgs boson vanishes in the limit of zero-momentum transfer. Using the same method, we can easily generalize the model to an SO(N) model with general soft-breaking structures. In particular, we study the soft-breaking cubic terms and identify those terms which preserve the cancellation mechanism for the DM candidate. In our discussion of the second method, we find that the cancellation relies on the special structure of mass terms and interactions of the mediators. This condition can be straightforwardly generalized to the vector-portal models. We provide two examples of the vector-portal case where the first one is an SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)_X model and the second one is an SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y \times U(1)_(B-L) \times U(1)_X model. In the first model, the vector mediators are the Z_nu boson and a new U(1)_X gauge boson X_nu, while in the second model the mediators are the U(1)_(B-L) and U(1)_X gauge bosons. The cancellation mechanism works in both models when there are no generic kinetic mixing terms for the gauge bosons. Once the generic kinetic mixing terms are included, the first model requires a fine-tuning of the mixing parameter to avoid the stringent direct detection bound, while the second model can naturally circumvent it.

$CP$ asymmetry in the angular distributions of $τ\to K_Sπν_τ$ decays -- II: general effective field theory analysis

We proceed to study the $CP$ asymmetry in the angular distributions of $τ\to K_Sπν_τ$ decays within a general effective field theory framework including four-fermion operators up to dimension-six. It is found that, besides the commonly considered scalar-vector interference, the tensor-scalar interference can also produce a non-zero $CP$ asymmetry in the angular distributions. Bounds on the effective couplings of the non-standard scalar and tensor interactions are obtained under the combined constraints from the measured $CP$ asymmetries and the branching ratio of $τ^-\to K_Sπ^-ν_τ$ decay, with $\mathrm{Im}[\hatε_S]=-0.008\pm0.027$ and $\mathrm{Im}[\hatε_T]=0.03\pm0.12$, at the scale $μ_τ=2~\mathrm{GeV}$ in the $\mathrm{\overline{MS}}$ scheme. Using the best-fit values, we also find that the distributions of the $CP$ asymmetries can deviate significantly from the SM expectation in almost the whole $Kπ$ invariant-mass region. Nevertheless, the current bounds are still plagued by large experimental uncertainties, but will be improved with more precise measurements from Belle II as well as the proposed Tera-Z and STCF facilities. Assuming further that the non-standard scalar and tensor interactions originate from a weakly-coupled heavy new physics well above the electroweak scale, the $SU(2)_L$ invariance of the resulting SMEFT Lagrangian would indicate that very strong limits on $\mathrm{Im}[\hatε_S]$ and $\mathrm{Im}[\hatε_T]$ could also be obtained from the neutron electric dipole moment and the $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing. With the bounds from these processes taken into account, it is then found that, unless there exist extraordinary cancellations between the new physics contributions, neither the scalar nor the tensor interaction can produce any significant effects on the $CP$ asymmetries in the processes considered.

Studying the $b\rightarrow s \ell^+\ell^-$ anomalies and $(g-2)_μ$ in $R$-parity violating MSSM framework with the inverse seesaw mechanism

Inspired by the recent experimental results which show deviations from the standard model (SM) predictions of $b\rightarrow s \ell^+\ell^-$ transitions, we study the $R$-parity violating minimal supersymmetric standard model (RPV-MSSM) extended by the inverse seesaw mechanism. The trilinear $R$-parity violating terms, together with the chiral mixing of sneutrinos, induce the loop contributions to the $b\rightarrow s \ell^+\ell^-$ anomaly. We study the parameter space of the single-parameter scenario $C^{\rm NP}_{9,μ}=-C^{\rm NP}_{10,μ}=C_{\rm V}$ and the double-parameter scenario $(C_{\rm V},C_{\rm U})$, respectively, constrained by other experimental data such as $B_s-\bar{B}_s$ mixing, $B\rightarrow X_s γ$ decay, the lepton flavour violating decays, etc. Both the single-parameter and the double-parameter scenario can resolve the long existing muon anomalous magnetic moment problem as well, and allow the anomalous $t\rightarrow cg$ process to reach the sensitivity at the Future Circular hadron-hadron Collider (FCC-hh).

Probing $μ$eV ALPs with future LHAASO observation of AGN $γ$-ray spectra

Axion-like particles (ALPs) are predicted in some well-motivated theories beyond the Standard Model. The TeV gamma-rays from active galactic nuclei (AGN) suffer attenuation by the pair production interactions with the cosmic background light (EBL/CMB) during its travel to the earth. The attenuation can be circumvented through photon-ALP conversions in the AGN and Galaxy magnetic-field, and a flux enhancement is expected to arise in the observed spectrum. In this work, we study the potential of the AGN gamma-ray spectrum for energy up to above 100\,TeV to probe ALP-parameter space at around $μ$eV, where the coupling $g_{aγ}$ is so far relatively weakly constrained. We find the nearby and bright sources, Mrk\,501, IC\,310 and M\,87, are suitable for our objective. Assuming an intrinsic spectrum exponential cutoff energy, we extrapolate the observed spectra of these sources up to above 100\,TeV by the models with/without ALPs. For $g_{aγ}\gtrsim 2\times$$10^{-11} \rm GeV^{-1}$ with $m_{a}\lesssim0.5\,μ$eV, the flux at around 100\,TeV predicted by the ALP model can be enhanced more than an order of magnitude than that from the standard absorption, and could be detected by LHAASO. Our result is subject to the uncertainty from the intrinsic cutoff energy and the AGN lobe (or plume) magnetic-field. For an optimistic estimation, the constraint can be improved to $g_{aγ}\gtrsim 2\times$$10^{-11} \rm GeV^{-1}$ with $m_{a}\lesssim1\,μ$eV. This require further observations on these sources by the forthcoming CTA, LHAASO, SWGO and so on.

Vector dark matter from split SU(2) gauge bosons

We propose a vector dark matter model with an exotic dark SU(2) gauge group. Two Higgs triplets are introduced to spontaneously break the symmetry. All of the dark gauge bosons become massive, and the lightest one is a viable vector DM candidate. Its stability is guaranteed by a remaining Z_2 symmetry. We study the parameter space constrained by the Higgs measurement data, the dark matter relic density, and direct and indirect detection experiments. We find numerous parameter points satisfying all the constraints, and they could be further tested in future experiments. Similar methodology can be used to construct vector dark matter models from an arbitrary SO(N) gauge group.

Phase transition gravitational waves from pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone dark matter and two Higgs doublets

We investigate the potential stochastic gravitational waves from first-order electroweak phase transitions in a model with pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone dark matter and two Higgs doublets. The dark matter candidate can naturally evade direct detection bounds, and can achieve the observed relic abundance via the thermal mechanism. Three scalar fields in the model obtain vacuum expectation values, related to phase transitions at the early Universe. We search for the parameter points that can cause first-order phase transitions, taking into account the existed experimental constraints. The resulting gravitational wave spectra are further evaluated. Some parameter points are found to induce strong gravitational wave signals, which have the opportunity to be detected in future space-based interferometer experiments LISA, Taiji, and TianQin.

Nonlinear Hall effect in two-dimensional class AI metals

In a time-reversal invariant system, while the anomalous Hall effect identically vanishes in the linear response regime due to the constraint of time-reversal symmetry on the distribution of Berry curvature, a nonlinear Hall effect can emerge in the second-order response regime if the inversion symmetry is broken to allow a nonzero Berry curvature dipole (BCD) on the Fermi surface. In this work, we study the nonlinear Hall effect of the BCD origin in two-dimensional doped insulators and semimetals belonging to the symmetry class AI which has spinless time-reversal symmetry. Despite that the class AI does not host any strong topological insulator phase in two dimensions, we find that they can still be classified as topologically obstructed insulators and trivial insulators if putting certain constraint on the Hamiltonians. When the insulator gets closer to the phase boundary of the two distinct phases, we find that the BCDs will become more prominent if the doping level is located near the band edge. Moreover, when the insulator undergoes a phase transition between the two distinct phases, we find that the BCDs will dramatically change their signs. For the semimetals without inversion symmetry, we find that the BCDs will sharply reverse their signs when the doping level crosses the Dirac points. With the shift of the locations of Dirac points in energy, the critical doping level at which the BCDs sharply reverse their signs will accordingly change. Our study reveals that class AI materials can also have interesting geometrical and topological properties, and remarkable nonlinear Hall effect can also appear in this class of materials even though the spin-orbit coupling is negligible. Our findings broaden the scope of materials to study the nonlinear Hall effect and provide new perspectives for the application of this effect.

$1 \leftrightarrow 2$ Processes of a Sterile Neutrino Around Electroweak Scale in the Thermal Plasma

In this paper, we will apply the Goldstone equivalence gauge to calculate the $1 \leftrightarrow 2$ processes of a sterile neutrino in the thermal plasma below the standard model (SM) critical temperature $T_c \approx 160 \text{ GeV}$. The sterile neutrino's mass is around the electroweak scale $50 \text{ GeV} \leq m_N \leq 200 \text{ GeV}$, and the acquired thermal averaged effective width $\barΓ_{\text{tot}}$ is continuous around the cross-over. We will also apply our results to perform a preliminary calculation of the leptogenesis.

Adjoint SU(5) GUT model with Modular $S_4$ Symmetry

We study the textures of SM fermion mass matrices and their mixings in a supersymmetric adjoint SU(5) Grand Unified Theory with modular $S_4$ being the horizontal symmetry. The Yukawa entries of both quarks and leptons are expressed by modular forms with lower weights. Neutrino sector has an adjoint SU(5) representation 24 as matter superfield, which is a triplet of $S_4$. The effective light neutrino masses is generated through Type-III and Type-I seesaw mechanism. The only common complex parameter in both charged fermion and neutrino sectors is modulus $τ$. Down-type quarks and charged leptons have the same joint effective operators with adjoint scalar in them, and their mass discrepancy in the same generation depends on Clebsch-Gordan factor. Especially for the first two generations the respective Clebsch-Gordan factors made the double Yukawa ratio $y_dy_μ/y_ey_s=12$, in excellent agreement with the experimental result. We reproduce proper CKM mixing parameters and all nine Yukawa eigenvalues of quarks and charged leptons. Neutrino masses and MNS parameters are also produced properly with normal ordering is preferred.

Intersecting Surface defects and 3d Superconformal indices

We compute the 3d N = 2 superconformal indices for 3d/1d coupled systems, which arise as the worldvolume theories of intersecting surface defects engineered by Higgsing 5d N = 1 gauge theories. We generalize some known 3d dualities, including non-Abelian 3d mirror symmetry and 3d/3d correspondence, to some of the simple 3d/1d coupled systems. Finally we propose a q-Virasoro construction for the superconformal indices.

Leptogenesis due to oscillating Higgs field

We propose a new leptogenesis scenario in which the lepton asymmetry and matter particles are simultaneously generated due to the coherent oscillating Higgs background. To demonstrate the possibility of our scenario, we consider the type-I seesaw model as an illuminating example and show the numerical analysis. In order to generate the required lepton number $|n_L/s| = 2.4 \times 10^{-10}$, we find that the scales of the Higgs background oscillation and the lightest right-handed neutrinos mass are required to be higher than $10^{14}$ GeV

Inert sextuplet scalar dark matter at the LHC and future colliders

We study a dark matter model constructed by extending the standard model with an inert $\mathrm{SU}(2)_\mathrm{L}$ sextuplet scalar of hypercharge 1/2. The sextuplet components are split by the quartic couplings between the sextuplet and the Higgs doublet after electroweak symmetry breaking, resulting in a dark sector with one triply charged, two doubly charged, two singly charged, and two neutral scalars. The lighter neutral scalar boson acts as a dark matter particle. We investigate the constraints on this model from the $\text{monojet} + /\!\!\!\!E_\mathrm{T}$ and $\text{soft-dilepton} + \text{jets} + /\!\!\!\!E_\mathrm{T}$ searches at the 13 TeV Large Hadron Collider, as well as from the current electroweak precision test. Furthermore, we estimate the projected sensitivities of a 100 TeV $pp$ collider and of a future $e^+e^-$ collider, and find that such future projects could probe TeV mass scales. Nonetheless, such mass scales only correspond to a subdominant component of the observed relic abundance if the dark matter particles solely originate from thermal production.

Higgs boson emerging from the dark

We propose a new non-thermal mechanism of dark matter production based on vacuum misalignment. A global $X$-charge asymmetry is generated at high temperatures, under which both the will-be Higgs and the dark matter are charged. At lower energies, the vacuum changes alignment and breaks the $U(1)_X$, leading to the emergence of the Higgs and of a fraction of charge asymmetry stored in the stable dark matter relic. This mechanism can be present in a wide variety of models based on vacuum misalignment, and we demonstrate it in a composite Higgs template model, where all the necessary ingredients are naturally present. A light pseudo-scalar $η$ is always predicted, with interesting implications for cosmology, future supernova observations and exotic $Z \to γη$ decays.

Probing quadruplet scalar dark matter at current and future $pp$ colliders

We investigate a dark matter model involving an inert $\mathrm{SU}(2)_\mathrm{L}$ quadruplet scalar with hypercharge 1/2. After the electroweak symmetry breaking, the dark sector contains one doubly charged, two singly charged, and two neutral scalars. The lighter neutral scalar can be a viable dark matter candidate. Electroweak production of these scalars at the Large Hadron Collider leads to potential signals in the $\text{monojet} + /\!\!\!\!E_\mathrm{T}$ and $\text{soft-leptons} + \text{jets} + /\!\!\!\!E_\mathrm{T}$ channels. We thus derive constraints on the model by reinterpreting recent experimental searches. Based on simulation, we further evaluate the sensitivity at a future 100 TeV $pp$ collider.

Fermionic and scalar dark matter with hidden $\mathrm{U}(1)$ gauge interaction and kinetic mixing

We explore the Dirac fermionic and complex scalar dark matter in the framework of a hidden $\mathrm{U}(1)_\mathrm{X}$ gauge theory with kinetic mixing between the $\mathrm{U}(1)_\mathrm{X}$ and $\mathrm{U}(1)_\mathrm{Y}$ gauge fields. The $\mathrm{U}(1)_\mathrm{X}$ gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken due to a hidden Higgs field. The kinetic mixing provides a portal between dark matter and standard model particles. Besides, an additional Higgs portal can be realized in the complex scalar case. Dark matter interactions with nucleons are typically isospin violating, and direct detection constraints can be relieved. Although the kinetic mixing has been stringently constrained by electroweak oblique parameters, we find that there are several available parameter regions predicting an observed relic abundance through the thermal production mechanism. Moreover, these regions have not been totally explored in current direct and indirect detection experiments. Future direct detection experiments and searches for invisible Higgs decays at a Higgs factory could further investigate these regions.

Monte Carlo studies of modified scalable designs for quantum computation

As the building blocks of topological quantum computation, Majorana zero modes (MZMs) have attracted tremendous attention in recent years. Scalable mesoscopic island designs with MZMs show great potential in quantum information processing. However, these systems are susceptible to quasi-particle poisoning which would induce various parity-breaking errors. To solve this problem, we modify the mesoscopic islands with gate-tunable valves and non-topological backbones. We study the lifetime of the Majorana qubits on these modified islands which are coupled to local bosonic and fermionic thermal baths. We consider both the parity-breaking and parity-preserving errors, and propose a parity correction scheme. By using Jordan-Wigner transformation, we analyze the probability of logical X and Y errors. The open quantum system is described by the Pauli master equation, and standard Monte Carlo simulations are applied to observe the behavior of the system when the parity correction proposal is implemented. The results demonstrate that (1) our parity correction proposal is effective to most of the parity-breaking errors; (2) the lifetime of the qubit benefits from larger island size before it meets the threshold; (3) small chemical potential $ μ$ on the non-topological backbones and fine tuned paring potential $ Δ$ of the topological bulk segment are required for high probability of correctness. Our results provide an effective error correction scheme for the parity-breaking errors.
