W_L W_L Scattering in Higgsless Models: Identifying Better Effective Theories

The three-site model has been offered as a benchmark for studying the collider phenomenology of Higgsless models. In this paper we analyze how well the three-site model performs as a general exemplar of Higgsless models in describing W_L W_L scattering, and which modifications can make it more representative. We employ general sum rules relating the masses and couplings of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the gauge fields in continuum and deconstructed Higgsless models as a way to compare the different theories. We show that the size of the four-point vertex for the (unphysical) Nambu-Goldstone modes and the degree to which the sum rules are saturated by contributions from the lowest-lying KK resonances both provide good measures of the extent to which a highly-deconstructed theory can accurately describe the low-energy physics of a continuum 5d Higgsless model. After comparing the three-site model to flat and warped continuum models, we analyze extensions of the three-site model to a longer open linear moose with an additional U(1) group and to a ring ("BESS' or "hidden local symmetry") model with three sites and three links. Both cases may be readily analyzed in the framework of the general sum rules. We demonstrate that W_L W_L scattering in the ring model can very closely approximate scattering in the continuum models, provided that the hidden local symmetry parameter `a' is chosen to mimic rho-meson dominance of pion-pion scattering in QCD. The hadron and lepton collider phenomenology of both extended models is briefly discussed, with a focus on the complementary information to be gained from precision measurements of the Z' line shape and ZWW coupling at a high-energy lepton collider.

General Sum Rules for WW Scattering in Higgsless Models: Equivalence Theorem and Deconstruction Identities

We analyze inelastic 2 to 2 scattering amplitudes for gauge bosons and Nambu-Goldstone bosons in deconstructed Higgsless models. Using the (KK) Equivalence Theorem in 4D (5D), we derive a set of general sum rules among the boson masses and multi-boson couplings that are valid for arbitrary deconstructed models. Taking the continuum limit, our results naturally include the 5D Higgsless model sum rules for arbitrary 5D geometry and boundary conditions; they also reduce to the elastic sum rules when applied to the special case of elastic scattering. For the case of linear deconstructed Higgsless models, we demonstrate that the sum rules can also be derived from a set of general deconstruction identities and completeness relations. We apply these sum rules to the deconstructed 3-site Higgsless model and its extensions; we show that in 5D ignoring all higher KK modes (n>1) is inconsistent once the inelastic channels become important. Finally, we discuss how our results generalize beyond the case of linear Higgsless models.

LHC Signatures of New Gauge Bosons in the Minimal Higgsless Model

We study the LHC signatures of new gauge bosons in the gauge-invariant minimal Higgsless model. It predicts an extra pair of W_1 and Z_1 bosons which can be as light as ~400GeV and play a key role in the delay of unitarity violation. We analyze the W_1 signals in pp --> W_0Z_0Z_0 --> jj4\ell and pp --> jj W_0Z_0 --> jj3\ellνprocesses at the LHC, including the complete electroweak and QCD backgrounds. We reveal the complementarity between these two channels for discovering the W_1 boson, and demonstrate the LHC discovery potential over the full range of allowed W_1 mass.

Realistic Neutrinogenesis with Radiative Vertex Correction

We propose a new model for naturally light Dirac neutrinos and explain the baryon asymmetry of the universe through neutrinogenesis. We extend the standard model with a real singlet scalar, a heavy singlet Dirac fermion and a heavy doublet scalar besides three right-handed neutrinos, respecting lepton number conservation and a Z_2 symmetry. The neutrinos acquire small Dirac masses due to the suppression of the weak scale over the heavy mass scale. As a key feature of our construction, once the heavy Dirac fermion and doublet scalar go out of equilibrium, their decays induce the CP asymmetry from the interference of tree-level processes with the \textit{radiative vertex corrections} (rather than the self-energy corrections). Although there is no lepton number violation, an equal and opposite amount of CP asymmetry is generated in the left-handed and the right-handed neutrinos. The left-handed lepton asymmetry would then be converted to the baryon asymmetry in the presence of the sphalerons, while the right-handed lepton asymmetry remains unaffected.

Dirac Neutrinos, Dark Energy and Baryon Asymmetry

We explore a new origin of neutrino dark energy and baryon asymmetry in the universe. The neutrinos acquire small masses through the Dirac seesaw mechanism. The pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with neutrino mass-generation provides a candidate for dark energy. The puzzle of cosmological baryon asymmetry is resolved via neutrinogenesis.

Neutrino Dark Energy and Baryon Asymmetry from Higgs Sector

We propose a new model to explain the neutrino masses, the dark energy and the baryon asymmetry altogether. In this model, neutrinos naturally acquire small Majorana masses via type-II seesaw mechanism, while the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons associated with the neutrino mass-generation mechanism provide attractive candidates for dark energy. The baryon asymmetry of the universe is produced from the Higgs triplets decay with CP-violation.

Neutrino Mass and Baryon Asymmetry from Dirac Seesaw

We extend the visible content of the standard model (SM) with a hidden sector composed of three right-handed singlet neutrinos and one singlet Higgs. These extra singlets are charged under a new U(1)_X gauge symmetry while the SM particles are not. Two heavy scalar doublets are introduced to play the role of the messengers between the visible and hidden sectors. The neutrinos naturally acquire tiny Dirac masses because the ratio of weak scale over the heavy messenger masses is highly suppressed. Furthermore, the heavy messengers simultaneously generate baryon asymmetry of the universe through their out-of-equilibrium CP-violating decays.

Deconstruction and Elastic pi pi Scattering in Higgsless Models

We study elastic pion-pion scattering in global linear moose models and apply the results to a variety of Higgsless models in flat and AdS space using the Equivalence Theorem. In order to connect the global moose to Higgsless models, we first introduce a block-spin transformation which corresponds, in the continuum, to the freedom to perform coordinate transformations in the Higgsless model. We show that it is possible to make an "f-flat" deconstruction in which all of the f-constants f_j of the linear moose model are identical; the phenomenologically relevant f-flat models are those in which the coupling constants of the groups at either end of the moose are small - corresponding to the global linear moose. In studying pion-pion scattering, we derive various sum rules, including one analogous to the KSRF relation, and use them in evaluating the low-energy and high-energy forms of the leading elastic partial wave scattering amplitudes. We obtain elastic unitarity bounds as a function of the mass of the lightest KK mode and discuss their physical significance.

A Three Site Higgsless Model

We analyze the spectrum and properties of a highly-deconstructed Higgsless model with only three sites. Such a model contains sufficient complexity to incorporate interesting physics issues related to fermion masses and electroweak observables, yet remains simple enough that it could be encoded in a Matrix Element Generator program for use with Monte Carlo simulations. The gauge sector of this model is equivalent to that of the BESS model; the new physics of interest here lies in the fermion sector. We analyze the form of the fermion Yukawa couplings required to produce the ideal fermion delocalization that causes tree-level precision electroweak corrections to vanish. We discuss the size of one-loop corrections to b \to s γ, the weak-isospin violating parameter αT and the decay Z \to b \bar{b}. We find that the new fermiophobic vector states (the analogs of the gauge-boson KK modes in a continuum model) can be reasonably light, with a mass as low as 380 GeV, while the extra (approximately vectorial) quark and lepton states (the analogs of the fermion KK modes) must be heavier than 1.8 TeV.

Ideal Fermion Delocalization in Five Dimensional Gauge Theories

We discuss ideal delocalization of fermions in a bulk SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) Higgsless model with a flat or warped extra dimension. So as to make an extra dimensional interpretation possible, both the weak and hypercharge properties of the fermions are delocalized, with the U(1)_Y current of left-handed fermions being correlated with the SU(2)_W current. We find that (to subleading order) ideal fermion delocalization yields vanishing precision electroweak corrections in this continuum model, as found in corresponding theory space models based on deconstruction. In addition to explicit calculations, we present an intuitive argument for our results based on Georgi's spring analogy. We also discuss the conditions under which the essential features of an SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) bulk gauge theory can be captured by a simpler SU(2) x SU(2) model.

Multi-Gauge-Boson Vertices and Chiral Lagrangian Parameters in Higgsless Models with Ideal Fermion Delocalization

Higgsless models with fermions whose SU(2) properties are "ideally delocalized," such that the fermion's probability distribution is appropriately related to the W boson wavefunction, have been shown to minimize deviations in precision electroweak parameters. As contributions to the S parameter vanish to leading order, current constraints on these models arise from limits on deviations in multi-gauge-boson vertices. We compute the form of the triple and quartic gauge boson vertices in these models and show that these constraints provide lower bounds only of order a few hundred GeV on the masses of the lightest KK resonances. Higgsless models with ideal fermion delocalization provide an example of extended electroweak gauge interactions with suppressed couplings of fermions to extra gauge-bosons, and these are the only models for which triple-gauge-vertex measurements provide meaningful constraints. We relate the multi-gauge couplings to parameters of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian, and the parameters obtained in these SU(2) x SU(2) models apply equally to the corresponding five dimensional gauge theory models of QCD. We also discuss the collider phenomenology of the KK resonances in models with ideal delocalization. These resonances are found to be fermiophobic, therefore traditional direct collider searches are not sensitive to them and measurements of gauge-boson scattering will be needed to find them.

Scales of Fermion Mass Generation and Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

The scale of mass generation for fermions (including neutrinos) and the scale for electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) can be bounded from above by the unitarity of scattering involving longitudinal weak gauge bosons or their corresponding would-be Goldstone bosons. Including the exact n-body phase space we analyze the 2 --> n ($n \geq 2$) processes for the fermion-(anti)fermion scattering into multiple gauge boson final states. Contrary to naive energy power counting, we demonstrate that as $n$ becomes large, the competition between an increasing energy factor and a phase-space suppression leads to a {\it strong new upper bound} on the scale of fermion mass generation at a finite value $n=n_s$, which is {\it independent of the EWSB scale,} $v = (\sqrt{2}G_F)^{-1/2}$. For quarks, leptons and Majorana neutrinos, the strongest 2 --> n limits range from about 3TeV to 130-170TeV (with $2\lesssim n_s \lesssim 24$), depending on the measured fermion masses. Strikingly, given the tiny neutrino masses as constrained by the neutrino oscillations, neutrinoless double-beta decays and astrophysical observations, the unitarity violation of $ν_Lν_L\to nW_L^a$ scattering actually occurs at a scale no higher than ~170 TeV. Implications for various mechanisms of neutrino mass generation are analyzed. On the other hand, for the 2 --> n pure Goldstone-boson scattering, we find that the decreasing phase space factor always dominates over the growing overall energy factor when $n$ becomes large, so that the best unitarity bound on the scale of EWSB remains at n=2.

Deconstructed Higgsless Models with One-Site Delocalization

In this note we calculate the form of electroweak corrections in deconstructed Higgsless models for the case of a fermion whose weak properties arise from two adjacent SU(2) groups on the deconstructed lattice. We show that, as recently proposed in the continuum, it is possible for the value of the electroweak parameter alpha S to be small in such a model. In addition, by working in the deconstructed limit, we may directly evaluate the size of off-Z-pole electroweak corrections arising from the exchange of Kaluza-Klein modes; this has not been studied in the continuum. The size of these corrections is summarized by the electroweak parameter alpha delta. In one-site delocalized Higgsless models with small values of alpha S, we show that the amount of delocalization is bounded from above, and must be less than 25% at 95% CL. We discuss the relation of these calculations to our previous calculations in deconstructed Higgsless models, and to models of extended technicolor. We present numerical results for a four-site model, illustrating our analytic calculations.

Scales of Mass Generation for Quarks, Leptons and Majorana Neutrinos

We study 2 --> n inelastic fermion-(anti)fermion scattering into multiple longitudinal weak gauge bosons and derive universal upper bounds on the scales of fermion mass generation by imposing unitarity of the S-matrix. We place new upper limits on the scales of fermion mass generation, independent of the electroweak symmetry breaking scale. We find that the strongest 2 --> n limits fall in a narrow range, 3-170 TeV (with n=2-24), depending on the observed fermion masses.

Ideal Fermion Delocalization in Higgsless Models

In this note we examine the properties of deconstructed Higgsless models for the case of a fermion whose SU(2) properties arise from delocalization over many sites of the deconstructed lattice. We derive expressions for the correlation functions and use these to establish a generalized consistency relation among correlation functions. We discuss the form of the W boson wavefunction and show that if the probability distribution of the delocalized fermions is appropriately related to the W wavefunction, then deviations in precision electroweak parameters are minimized. In particular, we show that this "ideal fermion delocalization" results in the vanishing of three of the four leading zero-momentum electroweak parameters defined by Barbieri, et. al. We then discuss ideal fermion delocalization in the context of two continuum Higgsless models, one in Anti-deSitter space and one in flat space. Our results may be applied to any Higgsless linear moose model with multiple SU(2) groups, including those with only a few extra vector bosons.

Higgsless Deconstruction Without Boundary Condition

Deconstruction is a powerful means to explore the rich dynamics of gauge theories in four and higher dimensions. We demonstrate that gauge symmetry breaking in a compactified higher dimensional theory can be formulated via deconstructed 4D moose theory with {\it spontaneous symmetry breaking} and {\it without boundary condition.} The proper higher-D boundary conditions are automatically induced in the continuum limit rather than being imposed. We identify and analyze the moose theories which exhibit {\it delayed unitarity violation} (effective unitarity) as a {\it collective effect} of many gauge groups, without resorting to any known 5D geometry. Relevant phenomenological constraints are also addressed.

Scale of Mass Generation for Majorana Neutrinos

Scales of mass generation for Majorana neutrinos (as well as quarks and leptons) can be probed from high energy 2 --> n inelastic scattering involving a multiple longitudinal gauge boson final state. We demonstrate that the unitarity of 2 --> n scattering puts the strongest new upper limit on the scale of fermion mass generation, independent of the electroweak symmetry breaking scale $v=(\sqrt{2}G_F)^{-1/2}$. Strikingly, for Majorana neutrinos (quarks and leptons), we find that the strongest 2 --> n limits fall in a narrow range, 136-170 TeV (3-107 TeV) with n=20-24 (n=2-12), depending on the observed fermion masses. Physical implications are discussed.

Universal Non-Oblique Corrections in Higgsless Models and Beyond

Recently Barbieri, et al. have introduced a formalism to express the deviations of electroweak interactions from their standard model forms in "universal" theories, i.e. theories in which the corrections due to new physics can be expressed solely by modifications to the two-point correlation function of electroweak gauge currents of fermions. The parameters introduced by these authors are defined by the properties of the correlation functions at zero momentum, and differ from the quantities calculated by examining the on-shell properties of the electroweak gauge bosons. In this letter we discuss the relationship between the zero-momentum and on-shell parameters. In addition, we present the results of a calculation of these zero-momentum parameters in an arbitrary Higgsless model in which the low-energy rho parameter is one and which can be deconstructed to a linear chain of SU(2) groups adjacent to a chain of U(1) groups. Our results demonstrate the importance of the universal "non-oblique" corrections which are present and elucidate the relationships among various calculations of electroweak quantities in these models. Our expressions for these zero-momentum parameters depend only on the spectrum of heavy vector-boson masses; therefore, the minimum size of the deviations present in these models is related to the upper bound on the heavy vector-boson masses derived from unitarity. We find that these models are disfavored by precision electroweak data, independent of any assumptions about the background metric or the behavior of the bulk coupling.
