Pion and kaon valence quark distribution functions from Dyson-Schwinger equations

Using realistic quark propagators and meson Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes based on the Dyson-Schwinger equations, we calculate the pion and kaon's valence parton distribution functions (PDF) through the modified impulse approximation. The PDFs we obtained at hadronic scale have the purely valence characteristic and exhibit both dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking effects. A new calculation technique is introduced to determine the valence PDFs with precision. Through NLO DGLAP evolution, our result is compared with pion and kaon valence PDF data at experimental scale. Good agreement is found in the case of pion, while deviation emerges for kaon. We point out this situation can be resolved by incorporating gluon contributions into the mesons if the pion hosts more gluons than kaon nonperturbatively.

Noncommutative field with constant background fields and neutral fermion

Introducing constant background fields into the noncommutative gauge theory, we first obtain a Hermitian fermion Lagrangian which involves a Lorentz violation term, then we generalize it to a new deformed canonical noncommutation relations for fermion field. Massless neutrino oscillation in the deformed canonical noncommutation relations is analyzed. The restriction of the noncommutative coefficients is also discussed. By comparing with the existing experimental data of conventional neutrino oscillations, the order of noncommutative deformed coefficients is given from different ways.

Nonperturbative solutions of Dyson-Schwinger equations in QED$_3$

The studies of Dyson-Schwinger Equations (DSEs) provide us with insights into nonperturbative phenomenon of quantum field theory. However, DSEs are essentially an infinite set of coupled Green's functions, it's necessary to decouple parts of the equations which are thought of major physical importance to make the solution of these equations possible. Although the results are model-dependent, no qualitative deviations from exact solutions are expected with properly chosen truncation scheme. In this article, a globally convergent numerical method for the solution of the DSEs of QED$_3$ in Euclidean space is presented. This method can be adapted for more complex problems, however, it also shows its limitations when adopted in problems such as the searching for Wigner solutions.

The chiral phase transition of QED$_3$ around the critical number of fermion flavors

At zero temperature and density, the nature of the chiral phase transition in QED$_3$ with $\textit{N}_{f}$ massless fermion flavors is investigated. To this end, in Landau gauge, we numerically solve the coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations for the fermion and boson propagator within the bare and simplified Ball-Chiu vertices separately. It is found that, in the bare vertex approximation, the system undergoes a high-order continuous phase transition from the Nambu-Goldstone phase into the Wigner phase when the number of fermion flavors $\textit{N}_{f}$ reaches the critical number $\textit{N}_{f,c}$, while the system exhibits a typical characteristic of second-order phase transition for the simplified Ball-Chiu vertex.

Continuum study of various susceptibilities within thermal QED$_3$

In this paper, the relations of four different susceptibilities (i.e., the chiral susceptibility, the fermion number susceptibility, the thermal susceptibility and the staggered spin susceptibility) are investigated both in and beyond the chiral limit. To this end, we numerically solve the finite temperature version of the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations for fermion and boson propagator. It is found that, in the chiral limit, the four susceptibilities give the same critical temperature and signal a typical second order phase transition. But the situation changes beyond the chiral limit: the critical temperatures from the chiral and the thermal susceptibilities are different, which shows that to define a critical region instead of an exclusive point for crossover might be a more suitable choice; meanwhile, both the fermion number and the staggered spin susceptibilities have no singular behaviors any more, this may mean that they are no longer available to describe the crossover properties of the system.

Nature of chiral phase transition in QED$_3$ at zero density

Based on the feature of chiral susceptibility and thermal susceptibility at finite temperature, the nature of chiral phase transition around the critical number of fermion flavors ($N_c$) and the critical temperature ($T_c$) at a fixed fermion flavors number in massless QED$_3$ are investigated. It is showed that, at finite temperature the system exhibits a second-order phase transition at $N_c$ or $T_c$ and each of the estimated critical exponents is less than 1, while it reveals a higher-order continuous phase transition around $N_c$ at zero temperature.

Different critical points of chiral and deconfinement phase transitions in (2+1)-dimensional fermion-gauge interacting model

Based on the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations for fermion and massive boson propagators in QED$_3$, the fermion chiral condensate and the mass singularities of the fermion propagator via the Schwinger function are investigated. It is shown that the critical point of chiral phase transition is apparently different from that of deconfinement phase transition and in Nambu phase the fermion is confined only for small gauge boson mass.

Discussions on the crossover property within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

In this paper, chiral symmetry breaking and its restoration are investigated in the mean field approximation of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. A first-order phase transition exists at low temperature, but is smeared out at high temperature. We discuss the rationality of using susceptibilities as the criteria to determine the crossover region as well as the critical point. Based on our results, it is found that to define a critical band instead of an exclusive line in this region might be a more suitable choice.

The Wigner Solution and QCD Phase Transitions in a Modified PNJL Model

By employing some modification to the widely used two-flavor Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model, we discuss the Wigner solution of the quark gap equation at finite temperature and zero quark chemical potential beyond the chiral limit, and then try to explore its influences on the chiral and deconfinement phase transitions of QCD at finite temperature and zero chemical potential. The discovery of the coexistence of the Nambu and the Wigner solutions of the quark gap equation with nonzero current quark mass at zero temperature and zero chemical potential, as well as their evolutions with temperature is very interesting for the studies of the phase transitions of QCD. According to our results, the chiral phase transition might be of first order (while the deconfinement phase transition is still a crossover, as in the normal PNJL model), and the corresponding phase transition temperature is lower than that of the deconfinement phase transition, instead of coinciding with each other, which are not the same as the conclusions obtained from the normal PNJL model. In addition, we also discuss the sensibility of our final results on the choice of model parameters.

Distribution amplitudes of light-quark mesons from lattice QCD

We exploit a method introduced recently to determine parton distribution amplitudes (PDAs) from minimal information in order to obtain light-quark pseudoscalar and vector meson PDAs from the limited number of moments produced by numerical simulations of lattice-regularised QCD. Within errors, the PDAs of pseudoscalar and vector mesons constituted from the same valence quarks are identical; they are concave functions, whose dilation expresses the strength of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking; and SU(3)-flavour symmetry is broken nonperturbatively at the level of 10%. Notably, the appearance of precision in the lattice moments is misleading. The moments also exhibit material dependence on lattice volume, especially for the pion. Improvements need therefore be made before an accurate, unified picture of the light-front structure of light-quark pseudoscalar and vector mesons is revealed.

Discussion for the Solutions of Dyson-Schwinger Equations at m>0 in QED3

In the case of nonzero fermion mass, within a range of Ansatze for the full fermion-boson vertex, we show that Dyson-Schwinger equation for the fermion propagator in QED3 has two qualitatively distinct dynamical chiral symmetry breaking solutions. As the fermion mass increases and reaches to a critical value mc, one solution disappears, and the dependence of mc on the number of fermion flavors is also given.

A thermodynamically consistent quasi-particle model without temperature-dependent infinity of the vacuum zero point energy

In this paper, an improved quasi-particle model is presented. Unlike the previous approach of establishing quasi-particle model, we introduce a classical background field (it is allowed to depend on the temperature) to deal with the infinity of thermal vacuum energy which exists in previous quasi-particle models. After taking into account the effect of this classical background field, the partition function of quasi-particle system can be made well-defined. Based on this and following the standard ensemble theory, we construct a thermodynamically consistent quasi-particle model without the need of any reformulation of statistical mechanics or thermodynamical consistency relation. As an application of our model, we employ it to the case of (2+1) flavor QGP at zero chemical potential and finite temperature and obtain a good fit to the recent lattice simulation results of S. Borsanyi $et$ $al$. A comparison of the result of our model with early calculations using other models is also presented. It is shown that our method is general and can be generalized to the case where the effective mass depends not only on the temperature but also on the chemical potential.

The Wigner solution of quark gap equation at nonzero current quark mass and partial restoration of chiral symmetry at finite chemical potential

According to the generally accepted phase diagram of QCD, at low temperature and high baryon number density the chiral phase transition of QCD is of first order and the co-existence of the Nambu-Goldstone phase and the Wigner phase should appear. This is in conflict with the usual claim that the quark gap equation has no Wigner solution in the case of nonzero current quark mass. In this paper we analyze the reason why the Wigner solution does not exist in the usual treatment and try to propose a new approach to discuss this question. As a first step, we adopt a modified Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model to study the Wigner solution at finite current quark mass. We then generalize this approach to the case of finite chemical potential and discuss partial restoration of chiral symmetry at finite chemical potential and compare our results with those in the normal NJL model.

The Equation of State and Quark Number Susceptibility in Hard-Dense-Loop Approximation

Based on the method proposed in [ H. S. Zong, W. M. Sun, Phys. Rev. \textbf{D 78}, 054001 (2008)], we calculate the equation of state (EOS) of QCD at zero temperature and finite quark chemical potential under the hard-dense-loop (HDL) approximation. A comparison between the EOS under HDL approximation and the cold, perturbative EOS of QCD proposed by Fraga, Pisarski and Schaffner-Bielich is made. It is found that the pressure under HDL approximation is generally smaller than the perturbative result. In addition, we also calculate the quark number susceptibility (QNS) at finite temperature and finite chemical potential under hard-thermal/dense-loop (HTL/HDL) approximation and compare our results with the corresponding ones in the previous literature.

Calculation of tensor susceptibility beyond rainbow-ladder approximation of Dyson-Schwinger equations approach

In this paper, we extend the calculation of tensor vacuum susceptibility in the rainbow-ladder approximation of the Dyson-Schwinger (DS) approach in [Y.M.Shi, K.P.Wu, W.M.Sun, H.S.Zong, J.L.Ping, Phys. Lett. B $\bf{639}$, 248 (2006)] to that of employing the Ball-Chiu (BC) vertex. The dressing effect of the quark-gluon vertex on the tensor vacuum susceptibility is investigated. Our results show that compared with its rainbow-ladder approximation value, the tensor vacuum susceptibility obtained in the BC vertex approximation is reduced by about 10%. This shows that the dressing effect of the quark-gluon vertex is not large in the calculation of the tensor vacuum susceptibility in the DS approach.

The Quark Number Susceptibility in Hard-Thermal-Loop Approximation

With the aid of the vector Ward-Takahashi identity we derive a general formula for the quark number susceptibility (QNS) which expresses the QNS as an integral expression only involving the full quark propagator at finite temperature and chemical potential. The QNS at finite temperature and zero chemical potential is calculated with the dressed quark propagator in the Hard-Thermal-Loop (HTL) approximation. A comparison of our result with the results of QNS in HTL approximation in previous literatures is given.

Chiral susceptibility and the scalar Ward identity

The chiral susceptibility is given by the scalar vacuum polarisation at zero total momentum. This follows directly from the expression for the vacuum quark condensate so long as a nonperturbative symmetry preserving truncation scheme is employed. For QCD in-vacuum the susceptibility can rigorously be defined via a Pauli-Villars regularisation procedure. Owing to the scalar Ward identity, irrespective of the form or Ansatz for the kernel of the gap equation, the consistent scalar vertex at zero total momentum can automatically be obtained and hence the consistent susceptibility. This enables calculation of the chiral susceptibility for markedly different vertex Ansaetze. For the two cases considered, the results were consistent and the minor quantitative differences easily understood. The susceptibility can be used to demarcate the domain of coupling strength within a theory upon which chiral symmetry is dynamically broken. Degenerate massless scalar and pseudoscalar bound-states appear at the critical coupling for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking.

The thermal evolution of nuclear matter at zero temperature and definite baryon number density in chiral perturbation theory

The thermal properties of cold dense nuclear matter are investigated with chiral perturbation theory. The evolution curves for the baryon number density, baryon number susceptibility, pressure and the equation of state are obtained. The chiral condensate is calculated and our result shows that when the baryon chemical potential goes beyond $1150 \mathrm{MeV}$, the absolute value of the quark condensate decreases rapidly, which indicates a tendency of chiral restoration.
