Dynamic and Thermodynamic Stability of Superconducting-superfluid Stars

We give a comprehensive analysis of the dynamic and thermodynamic stability of neutron stars composed of superconducting-superfluid mixtures within the Iyer-Wald formalism. We derive the first law of thermodynamics and the necessary and sufficient condition under which dynamic equilibrium implies thermodynamic equilibrium. By constructing the phase space and canonical energy, we show that the dynamic stability for perturbations, restricted in symplectic complement of trivial perturbations with the ADM 3-momentum unchanged, is equivalent to the non-negativity of the canonical energy. Furthermore, dynamic stability against restricted axisymmetric perturbations guarantees the dynamic stability against all axisymmetric perturbations. We also prove that the positivity of canonical energy on all axisymmetric perturbations within the Lagrangian displacement framework with fixed angular momentum is necessary for thermodynamic stability. In particular, the equivalence of dynamic and thermodynamic stability for spherically symmetric perturbations of static, spherically symmetric isentropic configurations is established.

Quadratic curvature corrections to 5-dimensional Kerr-AdS black hole thermodynamics by background subtraction method

We justify the applicability of the background subtraction method to both Einstein's gravity and its higher derivative corrections in 5-dimensional asymptotically AdS spacetimes, where the corresponding higher derivative corrections to the expression for the ADM mass and angular momentum are also worked out. Then we further apply the background subtraction method to calculate the first order corrected Gibbs free energy by the quadratic curvature terms for the 5-dimensional Kerr-AdS black hole, which is in exact agreement with the previous result obtained by the holographic renormalization method. Such an agreement in turn substantiates the applicability of the background subtraction method.

Quantum Gravity Corrections to the Scalar Quasi-Normal Modes in Near-Extremal Reissener-Nordström Black Holes

We investigate quantum corrections to scalar quasi-normal modes (QNMs) in the near-extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole background with quantum correction in the near-horizon AdS$_2\times \mathrm{S}^2$ region. By performing a dimensional reduction, we obtain an effective Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity theory, whose quantum fluctuations are captured by the Schwarzian action. Using path integral techniques, we derive the quantum-corrected scalar field equation, which modifies the effective potential governing the QNMs. These corrections are extended from the near-horizon region to the full spacetime via a matching procedure. We compute the corrected QNMs using both the third-order WKB method and the Prony method and find consistent results. Our analysis reveals that quantum corrections can lead to substantial shifts in the real parts of QNM frequencies, particularly for small-mass or near-extremal black holes, while the imaginary parts remain relatively stable. This suggests that quantum gravity effects may leave observable imprints on black hole perturbation spectra, which could be potentially relevant for primordial or microscopic black holes.

Numerical computation of electromagnetically sourced nonlinear tails

Amazingly, recent studies indicate that nonlinear effects are of great significance for modelling black hole ringdown. Transient electromagnetic events in the astrophysical environment are typically high energetic, potentially responsible for some nonlinearities in ringdown. Motivated by the desire to understand these nonlinearities, we solve the inhomogeneous Bardeen-Press-Teukolsky equation numerically, and find second-order gravitational tails induced by an electromagnetic source. Our results suggest that the second-order tails of curvature perturbations with multipole numbers $l\geq4$ decay as $t^{-2l-2}$ at fixed spatial position and $u^{-l-3}$ in retarded-time $u$ at null infinity, slower than their linear counterparts, which can play a role in multi-messenger observations.

Dynamical Phase Transition of Dark Solitons in Spherical Holographic Superfluids

In this paper, we employ, for the first time, the holographic gravity approach to investigate the dynamical stability of solitons in spherical superfluids. Transverse perturbations are applied to the background of spherical soliton configurations, and the collective excitation modes of the solitons are examined within the framework of linear analysis. Our study reveals the existence of two distinct unstable modes in the soliton configurations. Through fully nonlinear evolution schemes, the dynamical evolution and final states of the solitons are elucidated. The results demonstrate that the solitons exhibit both self-acceleration instability and snake instability at different temperatures, respectively. And we explore the corresponding temperature-dependent dynamical phase transitions. It is noteworthy that the dynamical behavior of spherical solitons is distinct from the planar case due to the presence of spherical curvature.

Higher derivative corrections to Kerr-AdS black hole thermodynamics

Instead of the much more involved covariant counterterm method, we apply the well justified background subtraction method to calculate the first order corrections to Kerr-AdS black hole thermodynamics induced by the higher derivative terms up to the cubic of Riemann tensor, where the computation is further simplified by the decomposition trick for the bulk action. The validity of our results is further substantiated by examining the corrections induced by the Gauss-Bonnet term. Moreover, by comparing our results with those obtained via the ADM and Wald formulas in Lorentzian signature, we can extract some generic information about the first order corrected black hole solution induced by each higher derivative term.

Landau Instability and soliton formation

Consider at a finite temperature $T$ a superfluid moving with a velocity $v$ relative to the thermal bath or its normal component. From Landau's argument there exists a critical $v_c (T)$ beyond which excitations can be spontaneously generated and the system becomes unstable. Identifying the final state induced by such an instability has been an outstanding open question. Using holographic duality we perform dynamical simulations of evolutions from initial unstable states, and find that the system settles to a homogenous superfluid state with a final velocity below the critical velocity. The dynamical evolution process appears to be highly chaotic, exhibiting transient turbulence. Nevertheless we are able to identify from the simulations a universal physical mechanism for the reduction of superfluid velocity, in terms of spontaneous nucleation of solitons. We also derive a simple analytic formula which relates the final velocity to the number of solitons nucleated during the evolution.

To Think or Not to Think: Exploring the Unthinking Vulnerability in Large Reasoning Models

Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) are designed to solve complex tasks by generating explicit reasoning traces before producing final answers. However, we reveal a critical vulnerability in LRMs -- termed Unthinking Vulnerability -- wherein the thinking process can be bypassed by manipulating special delimiter tokens. It is empirically demonstrated to be widespread across mainstream LRMs, posing both a significant risk and potential utility, depending on how it is exploited. In this paper, we systematically investigate this vulnerability from both malicious and beneficial perspectives. On the malicious side, we introduce Breaking of Thought (BoT), a novel attack that enables adversaries to bypass the thinking process of LRMs, thereby compromising their reliability and availability. We present two variants of BoT: a training-based version that injects backdoor during the fine-tuning stage, and a training-free version based on adversarial attack during the inference stage. As a potential defense, we propose thinking recovery alignment to partially mitigate the vulnerability. On the beneficial side, we introduce Monitoring of Thought (MoT), a plug-and-play framework that allows model owners to enhance efficiency and safety. It is implemented by leveraging the same vulnerability to dynamically terminate redundant or risky reasoning through external monitoring. Extensive experiments show that BoT poses a significant threat to reasoning reliability, while MoT provides a practical solution for preventing overthinking and jailbreaking. Our findings expose an inherent flaw in current LRM architectures and underscore the need for more robust reasoning systems in the future.

Background subtraction method is not only much simpler, but also as applicable as covariant counterterm method

As the criterion for the applicability of the background subtraction method, not only the finiteness condition of the resulting Hamiltonian but also the condition for the validity of the first law of black hole thermodynamics can be reduced to the form amenable to much simpler analysis at infinity by using the covariant phase space formalism. With this, we further establish that the background subtraction method is as applicable as the covariant counterterm method not only to Einstein's gravity, but also to its higher derivative corrections for black hole thermodynamics in both asymptotically flat and AdS spacetimes. In addition, our framework also provides us with the first derivation of the universal expression of the Gibbs free energy in terms of the Euclidean on-shell action beyond Einstein's gravity. Among others, our findings have a far reaching impact on the shift in methodology for the Euclidean approach to black hole thermodynamics, where the well justified background subtraction method by our wieldy criterion is supposed to be the favored choice compared to the covariant counterterm method.

Dynamical black hole entropy beyond general relativity from the Einstein frame

Recently Hollands, Wald and Zhang proposed a new formula for the entropy of a dynamical black hole for an arbitrary theory of gravity obtained from a diffeomorphism covariant Lagrangian via the Noether charge method. We present an alternative, pedagogical derivation of the dynamical black hole entropy for $f(R)$ gravity as well as canonical scalar-tensor theory by means of conformal transformations. First, in general relativity we generalize Visser and Yan's pedagogical proof of the non-stationary physical process first law to black holes that may not be in vacuum, and give a pedagogical derivation of the second-order behavior of the dynamical black hole entropy for vacuum perturbations by considering the second-order variation of the Raychaudhuri equation. Second, we apply the derivation for general relativity to theories in the Einstein frames, and then recast the conclusions in their original frames. We show that the dynamical black hole entropy formulae of these theories satisfy both the non-stationary physical process first law and the non-stationary comparison first law via the Einstein frame. We further study the second-order behavior of the dynamical black hole entropy for vacuum perturbations, and observe that the second law is obeyed at second order in those theories. Using the Einstein frame, we also determine the relationship between the dynamical black hole entropy and the Wald entropy of the generalized apparent horizon in the original frame.

Holographic homogeneous superfluid on the sphere

In this paper, we extend the study of holographic superfluids from planar topology to spherical topology, inspired by recent studies on Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) on shell-shaped geometry. We investigate the superfluid phase transition from normal fluid and its Quasi-Normal Modes (QNMs) on the sphere. It turns out that the critical temperature for the superfluid phase transition on the sphere is higher than that in the planar case. We investigated four different solutions in the backgrounds of large and small black holes. The calculation of free energy selects the most stable solution. Finally, after calculating the quasi-normal modes and their dynamic behavior, we obtained three different channels similar to the planar superfluid case, along with the ``first" hydrodynamic excitation mode.

Equivalence of Noether charge and Hilbert action boundary term formulas for the black hole entropy in $F(R_{abcd})$ gravity theory

By working with the covariant phase space formalism, we have shown that not only can the Hamiltonian conjugate to a Killing vector field $ξ$ be expressed as the sum of the associated Noether charge and $ξ$ contracted with the Hilbert action boundary term for $F(R_{abcd})$ gravity, but also be written as its contraction with another $ξ$ independent tensor field. With this, we have proven the equivalence of Noether charge and Hilbert action boundary term formulae for the stationary black hole entropy in $F(R_{abcd})$ gravity, which is further substantiated by our explicit computation using both formulae.

Dynamics of holographic steady flows near a first-order phase transition

We investigate the physical properties of steady flows in a holographic first-order phase transition model, extending from the thermodynamics at equilibrium to the real-time dynamics far from equilibrium. Through spinodal decomposition or condensation nuclei, the phase-separated state with non-zero momentum can be achieved. In this scenario, we observe a gap between coexisting phases, arising not only from the variations in energy density, but also from the distinctions in momentum density or longitudinal pressure. These disparities are characterized by flow velocity and latent heat. Furthermore, by introducing an inhomogeneous scalar external source to simulate a fixed obstacle, we reveal the dynamical response of momentum loss in the moving system. Notably, starting from an initial phase-separated state with uniform flow velocity, and subsequently interacting it with an obstacle, we find that the moving high-energy phase exhibits four characteristic dynamical behaviors -- rebounding, pinning, passing, and splitting. These behaviors depend on the velocity of the phase and the strength of the obstacle.

Vortex shedding patterns in holographic superfluids at finite temperature

The dynamics of superfluid systems exhibit significant similarities to their classical counterparts, particularly in the phenomenon of vortex shedding triggered by a moving obstacle. In such systems, the universal behavior of shedding patterns can be classified using the classical concept of the Reynolds number $Re=\frac{v σ}ν$ (characteristic length scale $σ$, velocity $v$ and viscosity $ν$), which has been shown to generalize to quantum systems at absolute zero temperature. However, it remains unclear whether this universal behavior holds at finite temperatures, where viscosity arises from two distinct sources: thermal excitations and quantum vortex viscosity. Using a holographic model of finite-temperature superfluids, we investigate the vortex shedding patterns and identify two distinct regimes without quantum counterparts: a periodic vortex dipole pattern and a vortex dipole train pattern. By calculating the shedding frequency, Reynolds number, and Strouhal number, we find that these behaviors are qualitatively similar to empirical observations in both classical and quantum counterparts, which imply the robustness of vortex shedding dynamics at finite-temperature superfluid systems.

HMGIE: Hierarchical and Multi-Grained Inconsistency Evaluation for Vision-Language Data Cleansing

Visual-textual inconsistency (VTI) evaluation plays a crucial role in cleansing vision-language data. Its main challenges stem from the high variety of image captioning datasets, where differences in content can create a range of inconsistencies (\eg, inconsistencies in scene, entities, entity attributes, entity numbers, entity interactions). Moreover, variations in caption length can introduce inconsistencies at different levels of granularity as well. To tackle these challenges, we design an adaptive evaluation framework, called Hierarchical and Multi-Grained Inconsistency Evaluation (HMGIE), which can provide multi-grained evaluations covering both accuracy and completeness for various image-caption pairs. Specifically, the HMGIE framework is implemented by three consecutive modules. Firstly, the semantic graph generation module converts the image caption to a semantic graph for building a structural representation of all involved semantic items. Then, the hierarchical inconsistency evaluation module provides a progressive evaluation procedure with a dynamic question-answer generation and evaluation strategy guided by the semantic graph, producing a hierarchical inconsistency evaluation graph (HIEG). Finally, the quantitative evaluation module calculates the accuracy and completeness scores based on the HIEG, followed by a natural language explanation about the detection results. Moreover, to verify the efficacy and flexibility of the proposed framework on handling different image captioning datasets, we construct MVTID, an image-caption dataset with diverse types and granularities of inconsistencies. Extensive experiments on MVTID and other benchmark datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed HMGIE to current state-of-the-art methods.

Dynamical behaviour of soliton train in holographic superfluids at zero temperature

We construct a soliton train configuration with holographic superfluid model under AdS soliton background. We investigate the stability of a soliton train using Bloch waves under two distinct quantization schemes. Upon imposing a minor perturbation on the soliton train system, it has been observed that there exist two elastic modes and one phonon mode. Most importantly, we find, under soliton train background, that there is a rich phase diagram concerning the chemical potential under standard quantization. Nevertheless, there are no unstable modes under alternative quantization.

Nonlinear Evolution of unstable Charged de Sitter Black Holes with Hyperboloidal Formalism

Based on the hyperboloidal framework, we research the dynamical process of charged de Sitter black holes scattered by a charged scalar field. From the linear perturbation analysis, with the coupling strength within a critical interval, the charged scalar field with a superradiance frequency can induce the instability of the system. To reveal the real-time dynamics of such an instability, the nonlinear numerical simulation is implemented. The results show that the scalar field grows exponentially in the early stages and drastically extracts the charge from the black hole due to the superradiance, analogous to the charged black hole in a closed system. Differently, after saturation, the scalar field can not coexist with the central black hole stably and dissipates beyond the cosmological horizon slowly, leaving behind a bald black hole.

$sl(2,\mathds{C})\times D$ symmetry and conformal primary basis for massless fields

Alternative to the embedding formalism, we provide a group theoretic approach to the conformal primary basis for the massless field with arbitrary helicity. To this end, we first point out that $sl(2,\mathds{C})$ isometry gets enhanced to $sl(2,\mathds{C})\times D$ symmetry for the solution space of the massless field with arbitrary helicity. Then associated with $sl(2,\mathds{C})\times D$ symmetry, we introduce the novel quadratic Casimirs and relevant tensor/spinor fields to derive 2 explicit constraints on the bulk dilatation and $sl(2,\mathds{C})$ Casimirs. With this, we further argue that the candidate conformal primary basis can be constructed out of the infinite tower of the descendants of the left and right highest (lowest) conformal primary wavefunction of $sl(2,\mathds{C})$ Lie algebra, and the corresponding celestial conformal weights are determined by the bulk scaling dimension through solving out the exact on-shell conformal primary wavefunctions, where on top of the two kinds of familiar-looking on-shell conformal primary wavefunctions, we also obtain another set of independent on-shell conformal primary wavefunctions for the massless field with helicity $|s|\ge 1$. In passing, we also develop the relationship between the 4D Lorentz Lie algebra and 2D conformal Lie algebra from scratch, and present an explicit derivation for the two important properties associated with the conformal primary wavefunctions.
