Ground Experiments and Performance Evaluation of the Low-Frequency Radio Spectrometer Onboard the Lander of Chang'e-4 Mission

The Low-Frequency Radio Spectrometer (LFRS) is a scientific payload onboard the Chang'e-4 lunar lander launched in December 2018. The LFRS provides in-situ measurements of the low-frequency radio phenomena on the far-side of the Moon for the first time in human history. To evaluate the performance of the LFRS, a series of ground experiments are conducted using a prototype model of the LFRS. It is not easy to perform the experiments because the EMI \footnote{ Abbreviation: EMI, Electro Magnetic Interference} from the Chang'e-4 lunar lander itself and the environment is very intense. The results after EMI mitigation show that the sensitivity of the LFRS may be 1e-18Wm^2Hz^-1.

SMARTS: Scalable Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Training School for Autonomous Driving

Multi-agent interaction is a fundamental aspect of autonomous driving in the real world. Despite more than a decade of research and development, the problem of how to competently interact with diverse road users in diverse scenarios remains largely unsolved. Learning methods have much to offer towards solving this problem. But they require a realistic multi-agent simulator that generates diverse and competent driving interactions. To meet this need, we develop a dedicated simulation platform called SMARTS (Scalable Multi-Agent RL Training School). SMARTS supports the training, accumulation, and use of diverse behavior models of road users. These are in turn used to create increasingly more realistic and diverse interactions that enable deeper and broader research on multi-agent interaction. In this paper, we describe the design goals of SMARTS, explain its basic architecture and its key features, and illustrate its use through concrete multi-agent experiments on interactive scenarios. We open-source the SMARTS platform and the associated benchmark tasks and evaluation metrics to encourage and empower research on multi-agent learning for autonomous driving. Our code is available at https://github.com/huawei-noah/SMARTS.

Triple-GAIL: A Multi-Modal Imitation Learning Framework with Generative Adversarial Nets

Generative adversarial imitation learning (GAIL) has shown promising results by taking advantage of generative adversarial nets, especially in the field of robot learning. However, the requirement of isolated single modal demonstrations limits the scalability of the approach to real world scenarios such as autonomous vehicles' demand for a proper understanding of human drivers' behavior. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-modal GAIL framework, named Triple-GAIL, that is able to learn skill selection and imitation jointly from both expert demonstrations and continuously generated experiences with data augmentation purpose by introducing an auxiliary skill selector. We provide theoretical guarantees on the convergence to optima for both of the generator and the selector respectively. Experiments on real driver trajectories and real-time strategy game datasets demonstrate that Triple-GAIL can better fit multi-modal behaviors close to the demonstrators and outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Some Counterexamples for Compatible Triangulations

We consider the conjecture by Aichholzer, Aurenhammer, Hurtado, and Krasser that any two points sets with the same cardinality and the same size convex hull can be triangulated in the "same" way, more precisely via \emph{compatible triangulations}. We show counterexamples to various strengthened versions of this conjecture.

VLBI observations of 10 CSO candidates: expansion velocities of hot spots

Observations of ten Compact Symmetric Objects ({\rm CSO}) candidates have been made with the Very Long Baseline Array at 8.4 GHz in 2005 and with a combined Chinese and European VLBI array at 8.4 GHz in 2009. The 2009 observations incorporate for the first time the two new Chinese telescopes at Miyun and Kunming for international astrophysical observations. The observational data, in combination with archival VLBA data from previous epochs, have been used to derive the proper motions of the VLBI components. Because of the long time baseline of $\sim$16 years of the VLBI data sets, the expansion velocities of the hot spots can be measured at an accuracy as high as $\sim$1.3 $μ$as yr$^{-1}$. Six of the ten sources are identified as CSOs with a typical double or triple morphology on the basis of both spectral index maps and their mirror-symmetry of proper motions of the terminal hot spots. The compact double source J1324+4048 is also identified as a CSO candidate. Among the three remaining sources, J1756+5748 and J2312+3847 are identified as core-jet sources with proper motions of their jet components relating to systemic source expansion. The third source J0017+5312 is likely also a core-jet source, but a robust detection of a core is needed for an unambiguous identification. The kinematic ages of the CSOs derived from proper motions range from 300 to 2500 years. The kinematic age distribution of the CSOs confirm an overabundance of compact young CSOs with ages less than 500 years. CSOs with known kinematic ages may be used to study the dynamical evolution of extragalactic radio sources at early stages.

Monotonic d-wave Superconducting Gap in Optimally-Doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ Superconductor by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

The momentum and temperature dependence of the superconducting gap and pseudogap in optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ superconductor is investigated by super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The measured energy gap in the superconducting state exhibits a standard {\it d}-wave form. Pseudogap opens above T$_c$ over a large portion of the Fermi surface with a "Fermi arc" formed near the nodal region. In the region outside of the "Fermi arc", the pseudogap has the similar magnitude and momentum dependence as the gap in the superconducting state which changes little with temperature and shows no abrupt change across T$_c$. These observations indicate that the pseudogap and superconducting gap are closely related and favor the picture that the pseudogap is a precursor to the superconducting gap.

Identification of a New Form of Electron Coupling in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 Superconductor by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission

Laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements with super-high resolution have been carried out on an optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ high temperature superconductor. New high energy features at $\sim$115 meV and $\sim$150 meV, besides the prominent $\sim$70 meV one, are found to develop in the nodal electron self-energy in the superconducting state. These high energy features, which can not be attributed to electron coupling with single phonon or magnetic resonance mode, point to the existence of a new form of electron coupling in high temperature superconductors.

High Energy Dispersions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 High Temperature Superconductor from Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission

Super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements have been carried out on the high energy electron dynamics in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) high temperature superconductor. Momentum dependent measurements provide new insights on the nature of high energy kink at 200~400 meV and high energy dispersions. The strong dichotomy between the MDC- and EDC-derived bands is revealed which raises critical issues about its origin and which one represents intrinsic band structure. The MDC-derived high energy features are affected by the high-intensity valence band at higher binding energy and may not be intrinsic.

Development of a Vacuum Ultra-Violet Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission System with a Super-High Energy Resolution Better Than 1 meV

The design and performance of the first vacuum ultra-violet (VUV) laser-based angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) system are described. The VUV laser with a photon energy of 6.994 eV and bandwidth of 0.26 meV is achieved from the second harmonic generation using a novel non-linear optical crystal KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF). The new VUV laser-based ARPES system exhibits superior performance, including super-high energy resolution better than 1 meV, high momentum resolution, super-high photon flux and much enhanced bulk sensitivity, which are demonstrated from measurements on a typical Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 high temperature superconductor. Issues and further development related to the VUV laser-based photoemission technique are discussed.
