Sensing coherent phonon dynamics in solids with delayed even harmonics

High harmonics have emerged as a powerful ultrafast probe of phonon dynamics and electron-phonon interactions in solids, with most studies focusing on odd harmonics. Here, in a pump-probe setup with variable delay, we theoretically investigate how even harmonics reveal coherent phonon dynamics. If pump and probe pulses overlap temporally, the spatial interference effect resulting from a non-coaxial pump-probe setup suppresses harmonic yields. At longer delays, odd-harmonic yields oscillate in phase at the optical phonon frequency, whereas even harmonics exhibit order-dependent phase-shifted oscillations. We identify a responsive range of even harmonic orders, in which the delay of yield oscillations is highly sensitive to subtle features of phonon dynamics and electron-electron interactions. Our findings highlight the potential of even harmonics to elucidate microscopic effects in systems with dynamically broken inversion symmetry.

Influence of molecular rotation on the generation of N$_2^+$ air lasing

N$_2^+$ air lasing has attracted considerable attention due to its promising applications in remote sensing and the debates surrounding its generation mechanisms. Here, we present a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the role of molecular rotation in N$_2^+$ lasing at 391 nm ($B^2 Σ_u^+(v''=0)\rightarrow X^2 Σ_g^+ (v=0)$). By solving the open-system density matrix and Maxwell-Bloch equations in a rovibronic-state basis, we examine both the formation of the N$_2^+$ gain medium induced by a femtosecond pump pulse and the subsequent spatial propagation of the seed pulse. During the pump stage, rotational dynamics are found to significantly modify the angle-dependent populations of ionic vibrational-electronic states within tens of femtoseconds. Furthermore, ionization-produced rotational coherences substantially enhance the population inversion between the $X^2 Σ_g^+ (v=0)$ and $B^2 Σ_u^+(v''=0)$ states. In the seed propagation stage, both population inversion and rotational coherence are found to contribute to the lasing process, with the latter playing a dominant role in amplifying the lasing signals. These findings reveal the crucial role of molecular rotation in N$_2^+$ air lasing and highlight its potential as a tunable parameter for controlling lasing dynamics.

Coherent postionization dynamics of molecules based on adiabatic strong-field approximation

Taking N2 and O2 as examples, we theoretically study the post-ionization dynamics of molecules in strong laser fields using a density matrix method for open systems, focusing on the effect of ionization-produced coherence on the dynamics of residual ions. We introduce the adiabatic strong-field approximation (ASFA) method to predict the coherences between ionic states resulting from multiorbital strong-field ionizations. Compared with the standard SFA, the ASFA method can be applied across a wide range of laser intensities due to the consideration of orbital distortion effects. Based on the ASFA, it is found that there are obvious coherences between ionic states in residual molecular ions. These coherences significantly influence the transitions between ionic states, which finally change the post-ionization dynamics of molecular ions. Our findings reveal the importance of the ionization-produced coherences in modulating post-ionization molecular dynamics.

Extended high-harmonic spectra through cascade resonance in confined quantum systems

The study of high-harmonic generation in confined quantum systems is vital to establishing a complete physical picture of harmonic generation from atoms and molecules to bulk solids. Based on a multilevel approach, we demonstrate how intraband resonances significantly influence the harmonic spectra via charge pumping to the higher subbands and, thus, redefine the cutoff laws. As a proof of principle, we consider the interaction of graphene nanoribbons, with zigzag as well as armchair terminations, and resonant fields polarized along the cross-ribbon direction. Here, this effect is particularly prominent due to many nearly equi-separated energy levels. In such a scenario, a cascade resonance effect can take place in high-harmonic generation when the field strength is above a critical threshold, which is completely different from the harmonic generation mechanism of atoms, molecules and bulk solids. We further discuss the implications not only for other systems in a nanoribbon geometry, but also systems where only a few subbands (energy levels) meet this frequency-matching condition by considering a generalized multilevel Hamiltonian. Our study highlights that cascade resonance bears fundamentally distinct influence on the laws of harmonic generation, specifically the cutoff laws based on laser duration, field strength, and wavelength, thus unraveling new insights in solid-state high-harmonic generation.

Ellipticity dependence transition induced by dynamical Bloch oscillations

The dependence of high-harmonic generation (HHG) on laser ellipticity is investigated using a modified ZnO model. In the driving of relatively weak field, we reproduce qualitatively the ellipticity dependence as observed in the HHG experiment of wurtzite ZnO. When increasing the field strength, the HHG shows an anomalous ellipticity dependence, similar to that observed experimentally in the single-crystal MgO. With the help of a semiclassical analysis, it is found that the key mechanism inducing the change of ellipticity dependence is the interplay between the dynamical Bloch oscillation and the anisotropic band structure. The dynamical Bloch oscillation contributes additional quantum paths, which are less sensitive to ellipticity. The anisotropic band-structure make the driving pulse with finite ellipticity be able to drive the pairs to the band positions with larger gap, which extends the harmonic cutoff. The combination of these two effects leads to the anomalous ellipticity dependence. The result reveals the importance of dynamical Bloch oscillations for the ellipticity dependence of HHG from bulk ZnO.

Simultaneous observation of forward-backward attosecond photoelectron holography

Photoelectron angular momentum distribution of He+ driven by a few-cycle laser is investigated numerically. We simultaneously observe two dominant interference patterns with one shot of lasers by solving the 3D time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE). The analysis of a semiclassical model identifies these two interference patterns as two kinds of photoelectron holography. The interference pattern with Pz > 0 is a kind of forward rescattering holography, which comes from the interference between direct (reference) and rescattered (signal) forward electrons ionized in the same quarter-cycle. The interference pattern with Pz < 0 is a kind of backward rescattering holography, which comes from the interference between direct electron ionized in the third quarter- cycle and rescattered backward electron ionized in the first quarter-cycle. Moreover, we propose a method to distinguish this backward rescattering holography and intracycle interference patterns of direct electrons. This is an important step for dynamic imaging of molecular structure and detecting electron in molecules on attosecond time scale by the backward rescattering attosecond photonelectron holography.
