Estimates for fundamental solutions of parabolic equations in non-divergence form

We construct the fundamental solution of second order parabolic equations in non-divergence form under the assumption that the coefficients are of Dini mean oscillation in the spatial variables. We also prove that the fundamental solution satisfies a sub-Gaussian estimate. In the case when the coefficients are Dini continuous in the spatial variables and measurable in the time variable, we establish the Gaussian bounds for the fundamental solutions. We present a method that works equally for second order parabolic systems in non-divergence form.

Note on Green's functions of non-divergence elliptic operators with continuous coefficients

We improve a result in Kim and Lee (Ann. Appl. Math. 37(2):111--130, 2021): showing that if the coefficients of an elliptic operator in non-divergence form are of Dini mean oscillation, then its Green's function has the same asymptotic behavior near the pole $x_0$ as that of the corresponding Green's function for the elliptic equation with constant coefficients frozen at $x_0$.

Global Schauder estimates for kinetic Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations

We present global Schauder type estimates in all variables and unique solvability results in kinetic Hölder spaces for kinetic Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck (KFP) equations. The leading coefficients are Hölder continuous in the $x, v$ variables and are merely measurable in the temporal variable. Our proof is inspired by Campanato's approach to Schauder estimates and does not rely on the estimates of the fundamental solution of the KFP operator.

Global $L_p$ estimates for kinetic Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations in divergence form

We present a priori estimates and unique solvability results in the mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces for kinetic Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck (KFP) equation in divergence form. The leading coefficients are bounded uniformly nondegenerate with respect to the velocity variable $v$ and satisfy a vanishing mean oscillation (VMO) type condition. We consider the $L_2$ case separately and treat more general equations which include the relativistic KFP equation.

Higher regularity for solutions to equations arising from composite materials

We consider parabolic systems in divergence form with piecewise $C^{(s+δ)/2,s+δ}$ coefficients and data in a bounded domain consisting of a finite number of cylindrical subdomains with interfacial boundaries in $C^{s+1+μ}$, where $s\in\mathbb N$, $δ\in (1/2,1)$, and $μ\in (0,1]$. We establish piecewise $C^{(s+1+μ')/2,s+1+μ'}$ estimates for weak solutions to such parabolic systems, where $μ'=\min\big\{1/2,μ\big\}$, and the estimates are independent of the distance between the interfaces. In the elliptic setting, our results answer an open problem (c) in Li and Vogelius (Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 153 (2000), 91--151).

Global $L_p$ estimates for kinetic Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations in nondivergence form

We study the degenerate Kolmogorov equations (also known as kinetic Fokker-Planck equations) in nondivergence form. The leading coefficients $a^{ij}$ are merely measurable in $t$ and satisfy the vanishing mean oscillation (VMO) condition in $x, v$ with respect to some quasi-metric. We also assume boundedness and uniform nondegeneracy of $a^{ij}$ with respect to $v$. We prove global a priori estimates in weighted mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces and solvability results. We also show an application of the main result to the Landau equation. Our proof does not rely on any kernel estimates.

Time analyticity for nonlocal parabolic equations

In this paper, we investigate pointwise time analyticity of solutions to fractional heat equations in the settings of $\mathbb{R}^d$ and a complete Riemannian manifold $\mathrm{M}$. On one hand, in $\mathbb{R}^d$, we prove that any solution $u=u(t,x)$ to $u_t(t,x)-\mathrm{L}_α^κ u(t,x)=0$, where $\mathrm{L}_α^κ$ is a nonlocal operator of order $α$, is time analytic in $(0,1]$ if $u$ satisfies the growth condition $|u(t,x)|\leq C(1+|x|)^{α-ε}$ for any $(t,x)\in (0,1]\times \mathbb{R}^d$ and $ε\in(0,α)$. We also obtain pointwise estimates for $\partial_t^kp_α(t,x;y)$, where $p_α(t,x;y)$ is the fractional heat kernel. Furthermore, under the same growth condition, we show that the mild solution is the unique solution. On the other hand, in a manifold $\mathrm{M}$, we also prove the time analyticity of the mild solution under the same growth condition and the time analyticity of the fractional heat kernel, when $\mathrm{M}$ satisfies the Poincaré inequality and the volume doubling condition. Moreover, we also study the time and space derivatives of the fractional heat kernel in $\mathbb{R}^d$ using the method of Fourier transform and contour integrals. We find that when $α\in (0,1]$, the fractional heat kernel is time analytic at $t=0$ when $x\neq 0$, which differs from the standard heat kernel. As corollaries, we obtain sharp solvability condition for the backward fractional heat equation and time analyticity of some nonlinear fractional heat equations with power nonlinearity of order $p$. These results are related to those in [8] and [11] which deal with local equations.

Weighted mixed-norm $L_p$ estimates for equations in non-divergence form with singular coefficients: the Dirichlet problem

We study a class of non-divergence form elliptic and parabolic equations with singular first-order coefficients in an upper half space with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. In the simplest setting, the operators in the equations under consideration appear in the study of fractional heat and fractional Laplace equations. Intrinsic weighted Sobolev spaces are found in which the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions are proved under certain smallness conditions on the weighted mean oscillations of the coefficients in small parabolic cylinders. Our results are new even when the coefficients are constants and they cover the case where the weights may not be in the $A_p$-Muckenhoupt class.

Gradient estimates for the insulated conductivity problem: the non-umbilical case

We study the insulated conductivity problem with inclusions embedded in a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^n$, for $n \ge 3$. The gradient of solutions may blow up as $\varepsilon$, the distance between inclusions, approaches to $0$. We established in a recent paper optimal gradient estimates for a class of inclusions including balls. In this paper, we prove such gradient estimates for general strictly convex inclusions. Unlike the perfect conductivity problem, the estimates depend on the principal curvatures of the inclusions, and we show that these estimates are characterized by the first non-zero eigenvalue of a divergence form elliptic operator on $\mathbb S^{n-2}$.

Optimal gradient estimates of solutions to the insulated conductivity problem in dimension greater than two

We study the insulated conductivity problem with inclusions embedded in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The gradient of solutions may blow up as $\varepsilon$, the distance between inclusions, approaches to $0$. It was known that the optimal blow up rate in dimension $n = 2$ is of order $\varepsilon^{-1/2}$. It has recently been proved that in dimensions $n \ge 3$, an upper bound of the gradient is of order $\varepsilon^{-1/2 + β}$ for some $β> 0$. On the other hand, optimal values of $β$ have not been identified. In this paper, we prove that when the inclusions are balls, the optimal value of $β$ is $[-(n-1)+\sqrt{(n-1)^2+4(n-2)}~]/4 \in (0,1/2)$ in dimensions $n \ge 3$.

Boundary Lebesgue mixed-norm estimates for non-stationary Stokes systems with VMO coefficients

We consider Stokes systems with measurable coefficients and Lions-type boundary conditions. We show that, in contrast to the Dirichlet boundary conditions, local boundary mixed-norm $L_{s,q}$-estimates hold for the spatial second-order derivatives of solutions, assuming the smallness of the mean oscillations of the coefficients with respect to the spatial variables in small cylinders. In the un-mixed norm case with $s=q=2$, the result is still new and provides local boundary Caccioppoli-type estimates. The main challenges in the work arise from the lack of regularity of the pressure and time derivatives of the solutions and from interaction of the boundary with the nonlocal structure of the system. To overcome these difficulties, our approach relies heavily on several newly developed regularity estimates for both divergence and non-divergence form parabolic equations with coefficients that are only measurable in the time variable and in one of the spatial variables.

The Vlasov-Poisson-Landau System with the Specular-Reflection Boundary Condition

We consider the Vlasov-Poisson-Landau system, a classical model for a dilute collisional plasma interacting through Coulombic collisions and with its self-consistent electrostatic field. We establish global stability and well-posedness near the Maxwellian equilibrium state with decay in time and some regularity results for small initial perturbations, in any general bounded domain (including a torus as in a tokamak device), in the presence of specular reflection boundary condition. We provide a new improved $L^{2}\rightarrow L^{\infty }$ framework: $L^{2}$ energy estimate combines only with $S^{p}$ estimate for the ultra-parabolic equation.

Sobolev estimates for fractional parabolic equations with space-time non-local operators

We obtain $L_p$ estimates for fractional parabolic equations with space-time non-local operators $$ \partial_t^αu - Lu + λu= f \quad \mathrm{in} \quad (0,T) \times \mathbb{R}^d,$$ where $\partial_t^αu$ is the Caputo fractional derivative of order $α\in (0,1]$, $λ\ge 0$, $T\in (0,\infty)$, and $$Lu(t,x) := \int_{ \mathbb{R}^d} \bigg( u(t,x+y)-u(t,x) - y\cdot \nabla_xu(t,x)χ^{(σ)}(y)\bigg)K(t,x,y)\,dy $$ is an integro-differential operator in the spatial variables. Here we do not impose any regularity assumption on the kernel $K$ with respect to $t$ and $y$. We also derive a weighted mixed-norm estimate for the equations with operators that are local in time, i.e., $α= 1$, which extend the previous results by using a quite different method.

Optimal regularity of mixed Dirichlet-conormal boundary value problems for parabolic operators

We obtain the regularity of solutions in Sobolev spaces for the mixed Dirichlet-conormal problem for parabolic operators in cylindrical domains with time-dependent separations, which is the first of its kind. Assuming the boundary of the domain to be Reifenberg-flat and the separation to be locally sufficiently close to a Lipschitz function of $m$ variables, where $m=0,\ldots,d-2$, with respect to the Hausdorff distance, we prove the unique solvability for $p\in (2(m+2/(m+3),2(m+2)/(m+1)))$. In the case when $m=0$, the range $p\in(4/3,4)$ is optimal in view of the known results for Laplace equations.

The Dirichlet-conormal problem for the heat equation with inhomogeneous boundary conditions

We consider the mixed Dirichlet-conormal problem for the heat equation on cylindrical domains with a bounded and Lipschitz base $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and a time-dependent separation $Λ$. Under certain mild regularity assumptions on $Λ$, we show that for any $q>1$ sufficiently close to 1, the mixed problem in $L_q$ is solvable. In other words, for any given Dirichlet data in the parabolic Riesz potential space $\mathcal{L}_q^1$ and the Neumann data in $L_q$, there is a unique solution and the non-tangential maximal function of its gradient is in $L_q$ on the lateral boundary of the domain. When $q=1$, a similar result is shown when the data is in the Hardy space. Under the additional condition that the boundary of the domain $Ω$ is Reifenberg-flat and the separation is locally sufficiently close to a Lipschitz function of $m$ variables, where $m=0,\ldots,d-2$, with respect to the Hausdorff distance, we also prove the unique solvability result for any $q\in(1,(m+2)/(m+1))$. In particular, when $m=0$, i.e., $Λ$ is Reifenberg-flat of co-dimension $2$, we derive the $L_q$ solvability in the optimal range $q\in (1,2)$. For the Laplace equation, such results were established in [6, 5, 7] and [14].

Kinetic Fokker-Planck and Landau Equations with Specular Reflection Boundary Condition

We establish existence of finite energy weak solutions to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation and the linearized Landau equation near Maxwellian, in the presence of specular reflection boundary condition for general domains. Moreover, by using a method of reflection and the $S_p$ estimate previously established by the first and the last author, we prove regularity in the kinetic Sobolev spaces $S_p$ and anisotropic Hölder spaces for such weak solutions. Such $S_p$ regularity leads to the uniqueness of weak solutions.

Boundedness of non-local operators with spatially dependent coefficients and $L_p$-estimates for non-local equations

We prove the boundedness of the non-local operator \[ \mathcal{L}^a u(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^d} \left(u(x+y)-u(x)-χ_α(y)\big(\nabla u(x),y\big)\right) a(x,y)\frac{dy}{|y|^{d+α}} \] from $H_{p,w}^α(\mathbb{R}^d)$ to $L_{p,w}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for the whole range of $p \in (1,\infty)$, where $w$ is a Muckenhoupt weight. The coefficient $a(x,y)$ is bounded, merely measurable in $y$, and Hölder continuous in $x$ with an arbitrarily small exponent. We extend the previous results by removing the largeness assumption on $p$ as well as considering weighted spaces with Muckenhoupt weights. Using the boundedness result, we prove the unique solvability in $L_p$ spaces of the corresponding parabolic and elliptic non-local equations.
