Topological Nodal Line Semimetal and Dirac Semimetal State in Antiperovskite Cu$_3$PdN

Based on first-principles calculation and effective model analysis, we propose that the cubic antiperovskite material Cu$_3$PdN can host a three-dimensional (3D) topological nodal line semimetal state when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is ignored, which is protected by coexistence of time-reversal and inversion symmetry. There are three nodal line circles in total due to the cubic symmetry. "Drumhead"-like surface flat bands are also derived. When SOC is included, each nodal line evolves into a pair of stable 3D Dirac points as protected by C$_4$ crystal symmetry. This is remarkably distinguished from the Dirac semimetals known so far, such as Na$_3$Bi and Cd$_3$As$_2$, both having only one pair of Dirac points. Once C$_4$ symmetry is broken, the Dirac points are gapped and the system becomes a strong topological insulator with (1;111) Z$_2$ indices.

First-principles study on cubic pyrochlore iridates Y2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7

Fully relativistic first-principles electronic structure calculations based on a noncollinear local spin density approximation (LSDA) are performed for pyrochlore iridates Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. The all-in, all-out antiferromagnetic (AF) order is stablized by the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U>U_c$ in the LSDA+$U$ scheme, with $U_c\sim1.1$~eV and 1.3~eV for Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ and Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, respectively. AF semimetals with and without Weyl points and then a topologically trivial AF insulator successively appear with further increasing $U$. For $U=1.3$~eV, Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is a topologically trivial narrow-gap AF insulator having an ordered local magnetic moment $\sim0.5μ_B$/Ir, while Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is barely a paramagnetic semimetal with electron and hole concentrations of $0.016$/Ir, in overall agreements with experiments. With decreasing oxygen position parameter $x$ describing the trigonal compression of IrO$_6$ octahedra, Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is driven through a non-Fermi-liquid semimetal having only an isolated Fermi point of $Γ_8^+$, showing a quadratic band touching, to a $Z_2$ topological insulator.

Quantum Spin Hall Effect in 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Haeckelites

By using first-principles calculation, we have found that a family of 2D transition metal dichalcogenide haeckelites with square-octagonal lattice $MX_2$-4-8 ($M$=Mo, W and $X$=S, Se and Te) can host quantum spin hall effect. The phonon spectra indicate that they are dynamically stable and the largest band gap is predicted to be around 54 meV, higher than room temperature. These will pave the way to potential applications of topological insulators. We have also established a simple tight-binding model on a square-like lattice to achieve topological nontrivial quantum states, which extends the study from honeycomb lattice to square-like lattice and broads the potential topological material system greatly.

Observation of the chiral anomaly induced negative magneto-resistance in 3D Weyl semi-metal TaAs

Weyl semi-metal is the three dimensional analog of graphene. According to the quantum field theory, the appearance of Weyl points near the Fermi level will cause novel transport phenomena related to chiral anomaly. In the present paper, we report the first experimental evidence for the long-anticipated negative magneto-resistance generated by the chiral anomaly in a newly predicted time-reversal invariant Weyl semi-metal material TaAs. Clear Shubnikov de Haas oscillations (SdH) have been detected starting from very weak magnetic field. Analysis of the SdH peaks gives the Berry phase accumulated along the cyclotron orbits to be π, indicating the existence of Weyl points.

Anomalous High-Energy Waterfall-Like Electronic Structure in 5d Transition Metal Oxide Sr2IrO4 with a Strong Spin-Orbit Coupling

The layered 5d transition metal oxides like Sr2IrO4 have attracted significant interest recently due to a number of exotic and new phenomena induced by the interplay between the spin-orbit coupling, bandwidth W and on-site Coulomb correlation U. In contrast to a metallic behavior expected from the Mott-Hubbard model due to more spatially extended 5d orbitals and moderate U, an insulating ground state has been observed in Sr2IrO4. Such an insulating behavior can be understood by an effective J_eff=1/2 Mott insulator model by incorporating both electron correlation and strong spin-orbital coupling, although its validity remains under debate at present. In particular, Sr2IrO4 exhibits a number of similarities to the high temperature cuprate superconductors in the crystal structure, electronic structure, magnetic structure, and even possible high temperature superconductivity. Here we report a new observation of the anomalous high energy electronic structure in Sr2IrO4. By taking high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on Sr2IrO4 over a wide energy range, we have revealed that the high energy electronic structures show unusual nearly-vertical bands that extend over a large energy range. Such anomalous high energy behaviors resemble the high energy waterfall features observed in the cuprate superconductors, adding one more important similarity between these two systems. While strong electron correlation plays an important role in producing high energy waterfall features in the cuprate superconductors, the revelation of the high energy anomalies in Sr2IrO4 points to a novel route in generating exotic electronic excitations from the strong spin-orbit coupling and a moderate electron correlation.

Weyl semimetal phase in non-centrosymmetric transition metal monophosphides

Based on first principle calculations, we show that a family of nonmagnetic materials including TaAs, TaP, NbAs and NbP are Weyl semimetal (WSM) without inversion center. We find twelve pairs of Weyl points in the whole Brillouin zone (BZ) for each of them. In the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), band inversions in mirror invariant planes lead to gapless nodal rings in the energy-momentum dispersion. The strong SOC in these materials then opens full gaps in the mirror planes, generating nonzero mirror Chern numbers and Weyl points off the mirror planes. The resulting surface state Fermi arc structures on both (001) and (100) surfaces are also obtained and show interesting shapes, pointing to fascinating playgrounds for future experimental studies.

Exploration and prediction of topological electronic materials based on first-principles calculations

The class of topological insulator materials is one of the frontier topics of condensed matter physics. The great success of this field is due to the conceptual breakthroughs in theories for topological electronic states and is strongly motivated by the rich variety of material realizations, thus making the theories testable, the experiments operable, and the applications possible. First-principles calculations have demonstrated unprecedented predictive power for material selection and design. In this article, we review recent progress in this field with a focus on the role of first-principles calculations. In particular, we introduce the Wilson loop method for the determination of topological invariants and discuss the band inversion mechanism for the selection of topological materials. Recent progress in quantum anomalous Hall insulators, large-gap quantum spin Hall insulators, and correlated topological insulators are also covered.

Topological Insulator to Dirac Semimetal Transition Driven by Sign Change of Spin-Orbit Coupling in Thallium Nitride

Based on the first-principles calculations, we reveal that TlN, a simple binary compound with Wurtzite structure, is a three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator (TI) with effectively negative spin-orbit coupling $λ_{eff} < 0$, which makes it distinguished from other TIs by showing opposite spin-momentum locking effect in its surface states. The sign of $λ_{eff}$ depends on the hybridization between N-$2p$ and Tl-$5d$ states, and can be tuned from negative to postive by lattice strain or chemical substitution, which drive the system into a Dirac semimetal with 3D Dirac cones in its bulk states. Such topological phase transition can be realized by electronic mechanism without breaking any crystal symmetry.

Large linear magnetoresistance in Dirac semi-metal Cd3As2 with Fermi surfaces close to the Dirac points

We have investigated the magnetoresistive behavior of Dirac semi-metal Cd3As2 down to low temperatures and in high magnetic fields. A positive and linear magnetoresistance (LMR) as large as 3100% is observed in a magnetic field of 14 T, on high-quality single crystals of Cd3As2 with ultra-low electron density and large Lande g factor. Such a large LMR occurs when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to both the current and the (100) surface, and when the temperature is low such that the thermal energy is smaller than the Zeeman splitting energy. Tilting the magnetic field or raising the temperature all degrade the LMR, leading to a less pronounced quadratic behavior. We propose that the phenomenon of LMR is related to the peculiar field-induced shifting/distortion of the helical electrons' Fermi surfaces in momentum space.

Three Dimensional Dirac Semimetal and Quantum Transports in Cd3As2

Based on the first-principles calculations, we recover the silent topological nature of Cd3As2, a well known semiconductor with high carrier mobility. We find that it is a symmetry-protected topological semimetal with a single pair of three-dimensional (3D) Dirac points in the bulk and non-trivial Fermi arcs on the surfaces. It can be driven into a topological insulator and a Weyl semi-metal state by symmetry breaking, or into a quantum spin Hall insulator with gap more than 100meV by reducing dimensionality. We propose that the 3D Dirac cones in the bulk of Cd3As2 can support sizable linear quantum magnetoresistance even up to room temperature.

Transition-Metal Pentatelluride ZrTe$_5$ and HfTe$_5$: a Paradigm for Large-gap Quantum Spin Hall Insulators

Quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators, a new class of quantum matters, can support topologically protected helical edge modes inside bulk insulating gap, which can lead to dissipationless transport. A major obstacle to reach wide application of QSH is the lack of suitable QSH compounds, which should be easily fabricated and has large size of bulk gap. Here we predict that single layer ZrTe$_5$ and HfTe$_5$ are the most promising candidates to reach the large gap QSH insulators with bulk direct (indirect) band gap as large as 0.4 eV (0.1 eV), and robust against external strains. The 3D crystals of these two materials are good layered compounds with very weak inter-layer bonding and are located near the phase boundary between weak and strong topological insulators, which pave a new way to future experimental studies on both QSH effect and topological phase transitions.

Topological Crystalline Kondo Insulator in Mixed Valence Ytterbium Borides

The electronic structures of two mixed valence insulators YbB$_6$ and YbB$_12$ are studied by using the local density approximation (LDA) supplemented with the Gutzwiller method and dynamic mean field theory (DMFT). YbB$_6$ is found to be a moderately correlated Z$_2$ topological insulator, similar to SmB$_6$ but having much larger bulk band gap. Notably, YbB$_12$ is revealed to be in a new novel quantum state, strongly correlated topological crystalline Kondo insulator, which is characterized by its non-zero mirror Chern number. The surface calculations find odd (three) and even (four) number of Dirac cones for YbB$_6$ and YbB$_12$, respectively.

Correlated Topological Insulators with Mixed Valence

We propose the local density approximation (LDA)+Gutzwiller method incorporating Green's function scheme to study the topological physics of correlated materials from the first-principles. Applying this method to typical mixed valence materials SmB6, we found its non-trivial Z2 topology, indicating that SmB6 is a strongly correlated topological insulator (TI). The unique feature of this compound is that its surface states contain three Dirac cones in contrast to most known TIs.

Magnetic ordering and multiferroicity in MnI$_2$

Density-functional calculations are carried out to investigate incommensurate magnetic structures and ferroelectric polarization in newly discovered multiferroic material MnI$_2$. The exchange interactions among local moments on Mn are parameterized by mapping the mean-field Heisenberg model on to total energy difference of several magnetic ordering states. The experimentally observed noncollinear magnetic states are well reproduced by using this model and exchange interaction parameters. The direction of polarization experimentally measured is also consistent with the result derived from the symmetry analysis of the magnetically ordered state. In particular, we find that the inter-plane magnetic exchange coupling is pivotal to the emergence of the spiral magnetic structure. This noncollinear magnetic structure, combined with spin-orbit coupling mainly from I ions, is responsible for the appearance of ferroelectric polarization.

The electronic structure of NaIrO$_3$, Mott insulator or band insulator?

Motivated by the unveiled complexity of nonmagnetic insulating behavior in pentavalent post-perovskite NaIrO$_3$, we have studied its electronic structure and phase diagram in the plane of Coulomb repulsive interaction and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) by using the newly developed local density approximation plus Gutzwiller method. Our theoretical study proposes the metal-insulator transition can be generated by two different physical pictures: renormalized band insulator or Mott insulator regime. For the realistic material parameters in NaIrO$_3$, Coulomb interaction $U=2.0 (J=U/4)$ eV and SOC strength $η=0.33$ eV, it tends to favor the renormalized band insulator picture as revealed by our study.

Dirac semimetal and topological phase transitions in A3Bi (A=Na, K, Rb)

The three-dimensional (3D) Dirac point, where two Weyl points overlap in momentum space, is usually unstable and hard to realize. Here we show, based on the first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, that crystalline $A_3$Bi ($A$=Na, K, Rb) are Dirac semimetals with bulk 3D Dirac points protected by crystal symmetry. They possess non-trivial Fermi arcs on the surfaces, and can be driven into various topologically distinct phases by explicit breaking of symmetries. Giant diamagnetism, linear quantum magnetoresistance, and quantum spin-Hall effect will be expected for such compounds.

Effect of Cleaving Temperature on the Surface and Bulk Fermi Surface of Sr2RuO4 Investigated by High Resolution Angle-Resolved Photoemission

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements are carried out to systematically investigate the effect of cleaving temperature on the electronic structure and Fermi surface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. Different from previous reports that high cleaving temperature can suppress surface Fermi surface, we find that the surface Fermi surface remains obvious and strong in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ cleaved at high temperature, even at room temperature. This indicates that cleaving temperature is not a key effective factor in suppressing the surface bands. On the other hand, in the aged surface of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ that is cleaved and held for a long time, the bulk bands can be enhanced. We have also carried out laser ARPES measurements on Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by using vacuum ultra-violet laser (photon energy at 6.994 eV) and found an obvious enhancement of bulk bands even for samples cleaved at low temperature. These information are important in realizing an effective approach in manipulating and detecting the surface and bulk electronic structure of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. In particular, the enhancement of bulk sensitivity, together with its super-high instrumental resolution of VUV laser ARPES, will be advantageous in investigating fine electronic structure and superconducting properties of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ in the future.

Unusual Fermi Surface Sheet-Dependent Band Splitting in Sr2RuO4 Revealed by High Resolution Angle-Resolved Photoemission

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on Sr2RuO4. We observe clearly two sets of Fermi surface sheets near the (π,0)-(0,π) line which are most likely attributed to the surface and bulk Fermi surface splitting of the βband. This is in strong contrast to the nearly null surface and bulk Fermi surface splitting of the αband although both have identical orbital components. Extensive band structure calculations are performed by considering various scenarios, including structural distortion, spin-orbit coupling and surface ferromagnetism. However, none of them can explain such a qualitative difference of the surface and bulk Fermi surface splitting between the αand βsheets. This unusual behavior points to an unknown order on the surface of Sr2RuO4 that remains to be uncovered. Its revelation will be important for studying and utilizing novel quantum phenomena associated with the surface of Sr2RuO4 as a result of its being a possible p-wave chiral superconductor and a topological superconductor.
