Non-chiral non-Bloch invariants and topological phase diagram in non-unitary quantum dynamics without chiral symmetry

The non-Bloch topology leads to the emergence of various counter-intuitive phenomena in non-Hermitian systems under the open boundary condition (OBC), which can not find a counterpart in Hermitian systems. However, in the non-Hermitian system without chiral symmetry, being ubiquitous in nature, exploring its non-Bloch topology has so far eluded experimental effort. Here by introducing the concept of non-chiral non-Bloch invariants, we theoretically predict and experimentally identify the non-Bloch topological phase diagram of a one-dimensional (1D) non-Hermitian system without chiral symmetry in discrete-time non-unitary quantum walks of single photons. Interestingly, we find that such topological invariants not only can distinguish topologically distinct gapped phases, but also faithfully capture the corresponding gap closing in open-boundary spectrum at the phase boundary. Different topological regions are experimentally identified by measuring the featured discontinuities of the higher moments of the walker's displacement, which amazingly match excellently with our defined non-Bloch invariants. Our work provides a useful platform to study the interplay among topology, symmetries and the non-Hermiticity.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of ultracold lattice bosons inside a cavity

We study the non-equilibrium quench dynamics crossing a continuous phase transition between the charge density wave (CDW) and supersolid (SS) phases of a bosonic lattice gas with cavity-mediated interactions. When changing the hopping amplitude in the Hamiltonian as a function of time, we investigate the scaling behavior of the correlation length and vortex density with respect to the quench time and find that there is a threshold of the quench rate separating two distinct scaling regimes. When slowly varying the system below that threshold, we find a power-law scaling as predicted by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM). While considering fast quench above that threshold, a deviation from the KZM prediction occurs, manifested by a saturation of the defect density. We further show that such distinct scaling behaviors during different dynamic procedures can be understood through comparing the relaxation time and the quench rate.

Retrieving High-Dimensional Quantum Steering From a Noisy Environment with N Measurement Settings

One of the most often implied benefits of high-dimensional (HD) quantum systems is to lead to stronger forms of correlations, featuring increased robustness to noise. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the $n$-setting linear HD quantum steering criterion. We verify the large violation of the steering inequalities without full-state tomography. The lower bound of the violation is $2.24\pm0.01$ in 11 dimensions, exceeding the bound ($V<2$) of 2-setting criteria. Hence, a higher strength of steering has been revealed. Moreover, we demonstrate the method for enhancing the noise robustness without increasing dimension, alternatively, by increasing measurement settings. Using the entanglement in 11 dimensions, we experimentally retrieve steering nonlocality with $63.4\pm1.4\%$ isotropic noise fraction, surpassing the $50\%$ limitation of 2-setting criteria. Our work offers the potential for practical one-sided device-independent quantum information processing that tolerates the noisy environment, lossy detection, and transcends the present transmission distance limitation.

A toolbox for elementary fermions with a dipolar Fermi gas in a 3D optical lattice

There has been growing interest in investigating properties of elementary particles predicted by the standard model. Examples of such studies include exploring their low-energy analogs in condensed matter system, where they arise as collective states or quasiparticles. Here we show that a toolbox for systematically engineering the emergent elementary fermions, i.e., Dirac, Weyl and Majorana fermions, can be built in a single atomic system composed of a spinless magnetic dipolar Fermi gas in a 3D optical lattice. The designed direction-dependent dipole-dipole interaction leads to both the basic building block, i.e, in-plane p+ip superfluid pairing instability and the manipulating tool, i.e, out-of-plane Peierls instability. It is shown that the Peierls instability provides a natural way of tuning the topological nature of p+ip superfluids and thus transform the fermion's nature between distinct emergent particles. Our scheme should open up a new thrust towards searching for elementary particles through manipulating the topology.

Interfacing a topological qubit with a spin qubit in a hybrid quantum system

We present and analyze a hybrid quantum system that interfaces a Majorana-hosted semiconductor nanowire with a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center via a magnetized torsional cantilever. We show that, the torsional mode of the mechanical resonator can strongly couple to the Majorana qubit and the spin qubit simultaneously, which allows to interface them for quantum state conversion through a dark state protocol. This work provides a promising interface between the topological qubit and the conventional spin qubit, and can find interesting applications in quantum information and computation.

Spin polarization separation of reflected light at Brewster angle

A novel spin polarization separation of reflected light is observed, when a linearly polarized Gaussian beam impinges on an air-glass interface at Brewster angle. In the far-field zone, spins of photons are oppositely polarized in two regions along the direction perpendicular to incident plane. Spatial scale of this polarization is related to optical properties of dielectric and can be controlled by experimental configuration. We believe that this study benefits the manipulation of spins of photons and the development of methods for investigating optical properties of materials.

Variation of polarization distribution of reflected beam caused by spin separation

The variation of polarization distribution of reflected beam at specular interface and far field caused by spin separation has been studied. Due to the diffraction effect, we find a distinct difference of light polarization at the two regions. The variation of polarization distribution of reflected light provides a new method to measure the spin separation displacement caused by Spin Hall Effect of light.
