Direction-Selective Wave Freezing and Amplification at a Hyperbolic Time Interface

Hyperbolic media are well known for converting high k-components that are evanescent in conventional dielectrics into propagating bulk waves through their open equifrequency contours. Here, we reveal a complementary temporal effect: after a sudden transition into an effectively nondispersive hyperbolic state, conservation of the full wavevector causes the indefinite dispersion to partition momentum space into real-, zero-, and purely imaginary-frequency regimes. Consequently, p-polarized waves undergo conventional temporal scattering, critical magnetic-field freezing, or exponential growth and decay, depending solely on their conserved wavevector direction, whereas s-polarized waves remain in the real-frequency regime. A second temporal boundary releases the frozen or amplified fields into propagating waves at original frequency. Analytical temporal boundary theory, k-space pulse reconstruction, and finite-difference time-domain simulations corroborate these dynamics. These results establish hyperbolic temporal boundaries as a compact route to direction-selective imaginary frequency dynamics and wave amplification without Floquet periodicity.

SRLCG: Self-Rectified Large-Scale Code Generation with Multidimensional Chain-of-Thought and Dynamic Backtracking

Large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized code generation, significantly enhancing developer productivity. However, for a vast number of users with minimal coding knowledge, LLMs provide little support, as they primarily generate isolated code snippets rather than complete, large-scale project code. Without coding expertise, these users struggle to interpret, modify, and iteratively refine the outputs of LLMs, making it impossible to assemble a complete project. To address this issue, we propose Self-Rectified Large-Scale Code Generator (SRLCG), a framework that generates complete multi-file project code from a single prompt. SRLCG employs a novel multidimensional chain-of-thought (CoT) and self-rectification to guide LLMs in generating correct and robust code files, then integrates them into a complete and coherent project using our proposed dynamic backtracking algorithm. Experimental results show that SRLCG generates code 15x longer than DeepSeek-V3, 16x longer than GPT-4, and at least 10x longer than other leading CoT-based baselines. Furthermore, they confirm its improved correctness, robustness, and performance compared to baselines in large-scale code generation.

An analytical study of mismatched complementary media

Complementary media (CM) interacting with arbitrarily situated obstacles are usually less discussed. In this paper, an analytical framework based on multiple scattering theory is established for analyzing such a mismatched case. As examples, CM-based devices, i.e., a superlens and superscatterer, are discussed. From an analysis, the cancellation mechanism of the mismatched CM is studied. In addition, numerical results are provided for illustration. Moreover, further study shows that such cancellation effects might rely on specific conditions. Actually, the conclusions are not restricted to any specific frequencies; they could be extended to many other areas including applications to active cloaking, antennas, and wireless power transfer.

Extend the explanation of transformation optics in metamaterial-modified wireless power transfer system

Based on rigorous scattering theory we establish a systematic methodology for research of metamaterial-modified current-carrying conductors, from which we mathematically demonstrate the explanation of transformation optics could be extended in metamaterial-modified wireless power transfer system, and based on that we could establish a equivalent model. More important, our demonstration reveals that the equivalent model will still be applicable even when TO could not give a direct explanation, as the requirements of complementary media is not satisfied. And numerical results from our methodology as well as COMSOL verified our findings. The demonstration is not under specific frequency, the conclusion could be extended to a broad range of wavelength, and expected to be applicable for active cloak etc.

Topological Defects and Defects-free states in toroidal nematics

We investigated the nematic ordering on a torus by means of analytic method and the method of simulated annealing, the Frank free energy, both in the standard form and covariant form, were used in the study. The defect free state was found to be the ground state in both cases. However, in the case of the standard model, there are two kinds of defective free ordering and a transition between the two occurs at a critical value of radius ratio $k=\frac{r}{R}$. The first one is $θ=0$ in the small $k$ regime and the second one is a variable $θ$ with position of the torus. In the case of the covariant model the ground state is confirmed to be the infinitely degenerate of $θ$ equals to a random constant. The states with defects are the excited states, where the pairs of defects excited and, duo to the barrier between positive and negative defects, have pretty long life. The behavior of the defect state basically the same for both of the two models.

Depletion interaction between two ellipsoids

The depletion interactions between two ellipsoids in three configurations were studied by both Monte Carlo simulation with the Wang-Landau algorithm and the density functional theory in the curvature expansion approximation. Common features of the depletion interactions were found and the results were as expected. By comparing the results of the two methods, it is concluded that density functional theory under the curvature expansion approximation gave very good results to the depletion forces.

From Over-charging to Like-charge Attraction in the Weak Coupling Regime

Despite decades of intensive studies, the effective interactions between strongly charged colloids still remain elusive. Here we show that a strongly charged surface with a layer of condensed counter- ions behaves effectively as a conductor, due to the mobile nature of the condensed ions. An external source charge in its vicinity is therefore attracted towards the surface, due to the image charge effect. This mechanism leads to correlational energies for counter-ions condensed on two distinct surfaces, as well as for free ions in the bulk. Generalizing Debye-Huckel theory and image charge methods, we analytically calculate these correlation energies for the two-plates problem, at the iso-electric point, where condensed counterions precisely balance the bare surface charges. At this point, the effective interaction between two plates is always attractive at small separation and repulsive at large separation.

An invisibility cloak using silver nanowires

In this paper, we use the parameter retrieval method together with an analytical effective medium approach to design a well-performed invisible cloak, which is based on an empirical revised version of the reduced cloak. The designed cloak can be implemented by silver nanowires with elliptical cross-sections embedded in a polymethyl methacrylate host. This cloak is numerically proved to be robust for both the inner hidden object as well as incoming detecting waves, and is much simpler thus easier to manufacture when compared with the earlier proposed one [Nat. Photon. 1, 224 (2007)].

Integrating fluctuations into distribution of resources in transportation networks

We propose a resource distribution strategy to reduce the average travel time in a transportation network given a fixed generation rate. Suppose that there are essential resources to avoid congestion in the network as well as some extra resources. The strategy distributes the essential resources by the average loads on the vertices and integrates the fluctuations of the instantaneous loads into the distribution of the extra resources. The fluctuations are calculated with the assumption of unlimited resources, where the calculation is incorporated into the calculation of the average loads without adding to the time complexity. Simulation results show that the fluctuation-integrated strategy provides shorter average travel time than a previous distribution strategy while keeping similar robustness. The strategy is especially beneficial when the extra resources are scarce and the network is heterogeneous and lowly loaded.

Effect of edge removal on topological and functional robustness of complex networks

We study the robustness of complex networks subject to edge removal. Several network models and removing strategies are simulated. Rather than the existence of the giant component, we use total connectedness as the criterion of breakdown. The network topologies are introduced a simple traffic dynamics and the total connectedness is interpreted not only in the sense of topology but also in the sense of function. We define the topological robustness and the functional robustness, investigate their combined effect and compare their relative importance to each other. The results of our study provide an alternative view of the overall robustness and highlight efficient ways to improve the robustness of the network models.

Conceal an entrance by means of superscatterer

By using the novel property of the rectangular superscatterer, we propose a design which can conceal an entrance from electromagnetic wave detection. Such a superscatterer is realized by coating a negative index material shell on a perfect electrical conductor rectangle cylinder. The results are numerically confirmed by full-wave simulations both in the far-field and near-field.

Low frequency elastic wave propagation in 2D locally resonant phononic crystal with asymmetric resonator

The resonance modes and the related effects to the transmission of elastic waves in a two dimensional phononic crystal formed by periodic arrangements of a two blocks unit cell in one direction are studied. The unit cell consists of two asymmetric elliptic cylinders coated with silicon rubber and embedded in a rigid matrix. The modes are obtained by the semi-analytic method in the least square collocation scheme and confirmed by the finite element method simulations. Two resonance modes, corresponding to the vibration of the cylinder along the long and short axes, give rise to resonance reflections of elastic waves. One mode in between the two modes, related to the opposite vibration of the two cylinders in the unit cell in the direction along the layer, results in the total transmission of elastic waves due to zero effective mass density at the frequency. The resonance frequency of this new mode changes continuously with the orientation angle of the elliptic resonator.

The Anti-Cloak

A kind of transformation media, which we shall call the "anti-cloak", is proposed to partially defeat the cloaking effect of the invisibility cloak. An object with an outer shell of "anti-cloak" is visible to the outside if it is coated with the invisible cloak. Fourier-Bessel analysis confirms this finding by showing that external electromagnetic wave can penetrate into the interior of the invisibility cloak with the help of the anti-cloak.

Reshape the perfect electrical conductor cylinder at will

A general method is proposed to design the cylindrical cloak, concentrator and superscatterer with arbitrary cross section. The method is demonstrated by the design of a perfect electrical conductor (PEC) reshaper which is able to reshape a PEC cylinder arbitrarily by combining the concept of cloak, concentrator and superscatterer together. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate its properties.

Superscatterer: Enhancement of scattering with complementary media

Based on the concept of complementary media, we propose a novel design which can enhance the electromagnetic wave scattering cross section of an object so that it looks like a scatterer bigger than the scale of the device. Such a ``superscatterer'' is realized by coating a negative refractive material shell on a perfect electrical conductor cylinder. The scattering field is analytically obtained by Mie scattering theory, and confirmed by full-wave simulations numerically. Such a device can be regarded as a cylindrical concave mirror for all angles.

Solid-solid transition of the size-polydisperse hard-sphere system

The solid-solid coexistence of a polydisperse hard sphere system is studied by using the Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that for large enough polydispersity the solid-solid coexistence state is more stable than the single-phase solid. The two coexisting solids have different composition distributions but the same crystal structure. Moreover, there is evidence that the solid-solid transition terminates in a critical point as in the case of the fluid-fluid transition.

A new Monte Carlo method to study the fluid-solid phase transition of polydisperse hard spheres

A new Monte Carlo approach is proposed to investigate the fluid-solid phase transition of the polydisperse system. By using the extended ensemble, a reversible path was constructed to link the monodisperse and corresponding polydisperse system. Once the fluid-solid coexistence point of the monodisperse system is known, the fluid-solid coexistence point of the polydisperse system can be obtained from the simulation. The validity of the method is checked by the simulation of the fluid-solid phase transition of a size-polydisperse hard sphere colloid. The results are in agreement with the previous studies.

Effect of polydispersity on the relative stability of hard-sphere crystals

By extending the nonequilibrium potential refinement algorithm and lattice switch method to the semigrand ensemble, the semigrand potentials of the fcc and hcp structures of polydisperse hard-sphere crystals are calculated with the bias sampling scheme. The result shows that the fcc structure is more stable than the hcp structure for polydisperse hard-sphere crystals below the terminal polydispersity.
