Brown-York energy in stationary spacetimes

One usually defines the Brown-York energy for a 2-surface embedded in a spacelike 3-slice as an integration of the mean curvature of the 2-surface isometrically embedded into the 3-slice, with a proper reference 3-space. We demonstrate that this naive definition is ill for stationary spacetimes. As an example, we investigate the Kerr-Newman spacetime in detail. We show that the naive definition of the Brown-York energy is not a component of the Brown-York boundary stress tensor, and thus deviates from the original idea of Brown and York. Furthermore, we present the exact form of the Brown-York energy for the Kerr-Newman spacetime with the proper reference.

Tail wavelets in the merger of binary compact objects

We present a model for tail wavelets, a phenomenon also known as "echo" in the literature. The tail wavelet may appear in signal reconnaissances in the merger of binary compact objects, including black holes and neutron stars. We show that the dark matter surrounding the compact objects lead to the speculated tail wavelet following the main gravitational wave (GW). We demonstrate that the radiation pressure of the main wave is fully capable of pushing away the the surrounding matter to some altitude, and splashing down of the matter excites the tail wavelet after ring down of the main wave. We illustrate this idea in a simplified model, where numerical estimations are carried out concerning the specific distribution of the dark matter outside the black hole horizon and the threshold values in accordance with observations. We study the full back reaction of the surrounding dark matter to the metric, and find that the effect is insignificant to the tail wavelets. We find the fine difference between the tail wavelets of a dressed black hole and a bare one. We demonstrate that the tail wavelet can be a natural phenomenon in frame of general relativity, without invoking any modified gravities or quantum effects.

P-V criticality in the extended phase space of black holes in Einstein-Horndeski gravity

Gravity is believed to have deep and inherent relation to thermodynamics. We study phase transition and critical behavior in the extended phase space of asymptotic anti de-Sitter (AdS) black holes in Einstein-Horndeski gravity. We demonstrate that the black hole in Einstein-Horndeski gravity undergo phase transition and P-V criticality mimicking the van der Waals gas-liquid system. The key approach in our study is to introduce a more reasonable pressure instead of previous pressure $P=-Λ/8π$ related to cosmological constant $Λ$, and this proper pressure is given insight from the asymptotical behaviour of this black hole. Moreover, we also first obtain P-V criticality in the two cases with $Λ=0$ and $Λ>0$ in our paper, which implicates that the cosmological constant $Λ$ may be not a necessary pressure candidate for black holes at the microscopic level. We present critical exponents for these phase transition processes.

Dynamics of critical collapse

Critical collapse of a massless scalar field in spherical symmetry is systematically studied. We combine numerical simulations and asymptotic analysis, and synthesize critical collapse, spacetime singularities, and complex science. First set of approximate analytic expressions near the center are obtained. We observe that, near the center, the spacetime is nearly conformally flat, the dynamics is not described by the Kasner solution, and the Kreschmann scalar is proportional to r^(-5.30), where r is the areal radius. These features are significantly different from those in black hole singularities. It is speculated that the scalar field in critical collapse may be a special standing wave.

A New Property of the Electromagnetic/Yang-Mills-Conformal Gravity System in Spherical Symmetry

We find a new property in $W^2$-conformal gravity in spherical symmetry. We demonstrate that the charge of the electromagnetic field varies with respect to the partial scaling symmetry (conformal transformations in subspaces of a spacetime) in the conformal gravity. We find that the electric and magnetic charges can vanish or appear via partial conformal transformations for the on-shell configurations in the conformal gravity. We find a solution of a Yang-Mills SU(2)-charged black hole in the conformal gravity, and further demonstrate that the SU(2) charge has similar properties with electromagnetic magnetic charges in the conformal gravity. We demonstrate how to imbed the electromagnetic and Yang-Mills SU(2) gauge field into the conformal gravity via such a symmetry. We make a brief discussion about the possibility to extend this argument to the Einstein gravity.

Towards a sound massive cosmology

It is known that de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity does not permit a homogeneous and isotropic universe with flat or spherical spatial metrics. We demonstrate that a singular reference metric solves this problem in an economic and straightforward way. In the dRGT massive gravity with a singular reference metric, there are sound homogeneous and isotropic cosmological solutions. We investigate cosmologies with the static and dynamical singular reference metrics, respectively. The term like dark energy appears naturally and the universe accelerates itself in some late time evolution. The term simulating dark matter also naturally emerges. We make a preliminary constraint on the parameters in the dRGT massive gravity in frame of the present cosmological model by using the data of supernovae, cosmic microwave back ground radiations, and baryonic acoustic oscillations.

Sonic velocity in holographic fluids and its applications

Gravity/fluid correspondence becomes an important tool to investigate the strongly correlated fluids. We carefully investigate the holographic fluids at the finite cutoff surface by considering different boundary conditions in the scenario of gravity/fluid correspondence. We find that the sonic velocity of the boundary fluids at the finite cutoff surface is critical to clarify the superficial similarity between bulk viscosity and perturbation of the pressure for the holographic fluid, where we set a special boundary condition at the finite cutoff surface to explicitly express this superficial similarity. Moreover, we further take the sonic velocity into account to investigate a case with more general boundary condition. In this more general case, two parameters in the first order stress tensor of holographic fluid cannot be fixed, one can still extract the information of transport coefficients by considering the sonic velocity seriously.

Cosmological Model Independent Time Delay Method

We propose a Cosmological Model Independent Time Delay (CMITD) method where the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) variable $K(z)$ is constructed by observational data instead of cosmological model. The simulated time delay data show the CMITD method could present the validity of LIV test. And, the errors in the propagating process is critical for the existence and magnitude of LIV.

Universality in the stress tensor for Holographic fluids at the finite cutoff surface via fluid/gravity correspondence

We investigate the stress tensor for holographic fluids at the finite cutoff surface through perturbing the Schwarzchild-AdS black brane background to the first order perturbations in the scenario of fluid/gravity correspondence. We investigate the most general perturbations of the metric without any gauge fixing. We consider various boundary conditions and demonstrate the properties of the corresponding holographic fluids. The critical fact is that the spatial components of the first order stress tensors of the holographic fluids can be rewritten in a concordant form, which implicates that there is an underlying universality in the first order stress tensor. We find this universality in the first order stress tensor for holographic fluids at the finite cutoff surface by an exhaustive investigation of perturbations of the full bulk metric.

Dynamical spacetimes in conformal gravity

The conformal gravity remarkably boosts our prehension of gravity theories. We find a series of dynamical solutions in the $W^2$-conformal gravity, including generalized Schwarzschild-Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (GSFRW), charged generalized Schwarzschild-Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (CGSFRW), especially rotating Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (RFRW), charged rotating Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (CRFRW), and a dynamical cylindrically symmetric solutions. The RFRW, CRFRW and the dynamical cylindrically symmetric solutions are never found in the Einstein gravity and modified gravities. The GSFRW and CGSFRW solutions take different forms from the corresponding solutions in the Einstein gravity.

Naked singularity, firewall, and Hawking radiation

Spacetime singularity has always been of interest since the proof of the Penrose-Hawking singularity theorem. Naked singularity naturally emerges from reasonable initial conditions in the collapsing process. A recent interesting approach in black hole information problem implies that we need a firewall to break the surplus entanglements among the Hawking photons. Classically, the firewall becomes a naked singularity. We find some vacuum analytical solutions in $R^n$-gravity of the firewall-type and use these solutions as concrete models to study the naked singularities. By using standard quantum theory, we investigate the Hawking radiation emitted from the black holes with naked singularities. Here we show that the singularity itself does not destroy information. A unitary quantum theory works well around a firewall-type singularity. We discuss the validity of our result in general relativity. Further our result demonstrates that the temperature of the Hawking radiation still can be expressed in the form of the surface gravity divided by $2π$. This indicates that a naked singularity may not compromise the Hakwing evaporation process.

Generalized Vaidya Solutions and Misner-Sharp mass for $n$-dimensional massive gravity

Dynamical solutions are always of interest to people in gravity theories. We derive a series of generalized Vaidya solutions in the $n$-dimensional de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity with a singular reference metric. Similar to the case of the Einstein gravity, the generalized Vaidya solution can describe shining/absorbing stars. Moreover, we also find a more general Vaidya-like solution by introducing a more generic matter field than the pure radiation in the original Vaidya spacetime. As a result, the above generalized Vaidya solution is naturally included in this Vaidya-like solution as a special case. We investigate the thermodynamics for this Vaidya-like spacetime by using the unified first law, and present the generalized Misner-Sharp mass. Our results show that the generalized Minser-Sharp mass does exist in this spacetime. In addition, the usual Clausius relation $δQ= TdS$ holds on the apparent horizon, which implicates that the massive gravity is in a thermodynamic equilibrium state. We find that the work density vanishes for the generalized Vaidya solution, while it appears in the more general Vaidya-like solution. Furthermore, the covariant generalized Minser-Sharp mass in the $n$-dimensional de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley massive gravity is also derived by taking a general metric ansatz into account.

Twisted spacetime in Einstein gravity

We find a vacuum stationary twisted solution in four-dimensional Einstein gravity. Its frame dragging angular velocities are antisymmetric with respect to the equatorial plane. It possesses a symmetry of joint inversion of time and parity with respect to the equatorial plane. Its Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass and angular momentum are zero. It is curved but regular all over the manifold. Its Komar mass and Komar angular momentum are also zero. Its infinite red-shift surface coincides with its event horizon, since the event horizon does not rotate. Furthermore we extend this solution to the massive case, and find some similar properties. This solution is a stationary axisymmetric solution, but not Kerr. It explicitly proves that pure Einstein gravity permits different rotational mode other than Kerr. Our results demonstrate that the Einstein theory may have much more rich structures than what we ever imagine.

Ghost free massive gravity with singular reference metrics

An auxiliary metric (reference metric) is inevitable in massive gravity theory. In the scenario of gauge/gravity duality, a singular reference metric corresponds to momentum dissipations, which describes the electric and heat conductivity for normal conductors. We demonstrate in detail that the massive gravity with singular reference metric is ghost-free.

Misner-Sharp Mass and the Unified First Law in Massive Gravity

We obtain the Misner-Sharp mass in the massive gravity for a four dimensional spacetime with a two dimensional maximally symmetric subspace via the inverse unified first law method. Significantly, the stress energy is conserved in this case with a widely used reference metric. Based on this property we confirm the derived Misner-Sharp mass by the conserved charge method. We find that the existence of the Misner-sharp mass in this case does not lead to extra constraint for the massive gravity, which is notable in modified gravities. In addition, as a special case, we also investigate the Misner-Sharp mass in the static spacetime. Especially, we take the FRW universe into account for investigating the thermodynamics of the massive gravity. The result shows that the massive gravity can be in thermodynamic equilibrium, which fills in the gap in the previous studies of thermodynamics in the massive gravity.

Black holes and gravitational waves in three-dimensional f(R) gravity

In the three-dimensional pure Einstein gravity, the geometries of the vacuum space-times are always trivial, and gravitational waves (gravitons) are strictly forbidden. For the first time, we find a vacuum circularly symmetric black hole with nontrivial geometries in $f(R)$ gravity theory, in which a true singularity appears. In this frame with nontrivial geometry, a perturbative gravitational wave does exist. Beyond the perturbative level, we make a constructive proof of the existence of a gravitational wave in $f(R)$ gravity, where the Birkhoff-like theorem becomes invalid. We find two classes of exact solutions of circularly symmetric pure gravitational wave radiation and absorption.

Critical behaviors of gravity under quantum perturbations

Phase transition and critical phenomenon is a very interesting topic in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Gravity is believed to has deep and inherent relation to thermodynamics. Near the critical point, the perturbation becomes significant. Thus for ordinary matter (govern by interactions besides gravity) the critical behavior will become very different if we ignore the perturbations around the critical point, such as mean field theory. We find that the critical exponents for RN-AdS spacetime keeps the same values even we consider the full quantum perturbations. This indicates a key difference between gravity and ordinary thermodynamic system.

Perihelion precession and deflection of light in the general spherically symmetric spacetime

In this paper, the perihelion precession and deflection of light have been investigated in the 4-dimensional general spherically symmetric spacetime, and the main equation is obtained. As the application of this main equation, the Reissner-Nordstorm-AdS solution and Clifton-Barrow solution in $f(R)$ gravity have been taken for the examples. We find that both the electric charge and $f(R)$ gravity can affect the perihelion precession and deflection of light, while the cosmological constant can only effect the perihelion precession. Moreover, we clarify a subtlety in the deflection of light in the solar system that the possible sun's electric charge is usually used to interpret the gap between the experiment data and theoretical result. However, after also considering the effect from the sun's same electric charge on the perihelion precession of Mercury, we can find that it is not the truth.
