Hallmarks of terahertz magnon currents in an antiferromagnetic insulator

The efficient transport of spin angular momentum is expected to play a crucial role in future spintronic devices, which potentially operate at frequencies reaching the terahertz range. Antiferromagnetic insulators exhibit significant potential for facilitating ultrafast pure spin currents by terahertz magnons. Consequently, we here use femtosecond laser pulses to trigger ultrafast spin currents across antiferromagnetic NiO thin films in Py|NiO|Pt stacks, where permalloy (Py) and Pt serve as spin-current source and detector respectively. We find that the spin current pulses traversing NiO reach a velocity up to 40 nm/ps and experience increasing delay and broadening as the NiO thickness is increased. We can consistently explain our observations by ballistic transport of incoherent magnon. Our approach has high potential to characterize terahertz magnon transport in magnetic insulators with any kind of magnetic order.

Defect-induced helicity-dependent terahertz emission in Dirac semimetal PtTe2 thin films

Nonlinear transport enabled by symmetry breaking in quantum materials has aroused considerable interest in condensed matter physics and interdisciplinary electronics. However, the nonlinear optical response in centrosymmetric Dirac semimetals via the defect engineering has remained highly challenging. Here, we observe the helicity-dependent terahertz (THz) emission in Dirac semimetal PtTe2 thin films via circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) under normal incidence. This is activated by artificially controllable out-of-plane Te-vacancy defect gradient, which is unambiguously evidenced by the electron ptychography. The defect gradient lowers the symmetry, which not only induces the band spin splitting, but also generates the giant Berry curvature dipole (BCD) responsible for the CPGE. Such BCD-induced helicity-dependent THz emission can be manipulated by the Te-vacancy defect concentration. Furthermore, temperature evolution of the THz emission features the minimum of the THz amplitude due to the carrier compensation. Our work provides a universal strategy for symmetry breaking in centrosymmetric Dirac materials for efficient nonlinear transport and facilitates the promising device applications in integrated optoelectronics and spintronics.

Antiferromagnetic magnonic charge current generation via ultrafast optical excitation

Néel spin-orbit torque allows a charge current pulse to efficiently manipulate the Néel vector in antiferromagnets, which offers a unique opportunity for ultrahigh density information storage with high speed. However, the reciprocal process of Néel spin-orbit torque, the generation of ultrafast charge current in antiferromagnets has not been demonstrated. Here, we report the experimental observation of charge current generation in antiferromagnetic metallic Mn2Au thin films using ultrafast optical excitation. The ultrafast laser pulse excites antiferromagnetic magnons, resulting in instantaneous non-equilibrium spin polarization at the antiferromagnetic spin sublattices with broken spatial symmetry. Then the charge current is generated directly via spin-orbit fields at the two sublattices, which is termed as the reciprocal phenomenon of Néel spin-orbit torque, and the associated THz emission can be detected at room temperature. Besides the fundamental significance on the Onsager reciprocity, the observed magnonic charge current generation in antiferromagnet would advance the development of antiferromagnetic THz emitter.

Manipulating THz Spin Current Dynamics by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction in Antiferromagnetic Hematite

An important vision of modern magnetic research is to use antiferromagnets as controllable and active ultrafast components in spintronic devices. Hematite is a promising model material in this respect because its pronounced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction leads to the coexistence of antiferromagnetism and weak ferromagnetism. Here, we use femtosecond laser pulses to drive terahertz spin currents from hematite into an adjacent Pt layer. We find two contributions to the generation of the spin current with distinctly different dynamics: the impulsive stimulated Raman scatting that relies on the antiferromagnetic order and the ultrafast spin Seebeck effect that relies on the net magnetization. The total THz spin current dynamics can thus be manipulated by a medium-strength magnetic field. The controllability of the THz spin current achieved in hematite opens the pathway toward controlling the exact spin current dynamics from ultrafast antiferromagnetic spin sources.
