Double-Wing Mixture of Experts for Streaming Recommendations

Streaming Recommender Systems (SRSs) commonly train recommendation models on newly received data only to address user preference drift, i.e., the changing user preferences towards items. However, this practice overlooks the long-term user preferences embedded in historical data. More importantly, the common heterogeneity in data stream greatly reduces the accuracy of streaming recommendations. The reason is that different preferences (or characteristics) of different types of users (or items) cannot be well learned by a unified model. To address these two issues, we propose a Variational and Reservoir-enhanced Sampling based Double-Wing Mixture of Experts framework, called VRS-DWMoE, to improve the accuracy of streaming recommendations. In VRS-DWMoE, we first devise variational and reservoir-enhanced sampling to wisely complement new data with historical data, and thus address the user preference drift issue while capturing long-term user preferences. After that, we propose a Double-Wing Mixture of Experts (DWMoE) model to first effectively learn heterogeneous user preferences and item characteristics, and then make recommendations based on them. Specifically, DWMoE contains two Mixture of Experts (MoE, an effective ensemble learning model) to learn user preferences and item characteristics, respectively. Moreover, the multiple experts in each MoE learn the preferences (or characteristics) of different types of users (or items) where each expert specializes in one underlying type. Extensive experiments demonstrate that VRS-DWMoE consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art SRSs.

New Constructions of MDS Twisted Reed-Solomon Codes and LCD MDS Codes

Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are optimal where the minimum distance cannot be improved for a given length and code size. Twisted Reed-Solomon codes over finite fields were introduced in 2017, which are generalization of Reed-Solomon codes. Twisted Reed-Solomon codes can be applied in cryptography which prefer the codes with large minimum distance. MDS codes can be constructed from twisted Reed-Solomon codes, and most of them are not equivalent to Reed-Solomon codes. In this paper, we first generalize twisted Reed-Solomon codes to generalized twisted Reed-Solomon codes, then we give some new explicit constructions of MDS (generalized) twisted Reed-Solomon codes. In some cases, our constructions can get MDS codes with the length longer than the constructions of previous works. Linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are linear codes that intersect with their duals trivially. LCD codes can be applied in cryptography. This application of LCD codes renewed the interest in the construction of LCD codes having a large minimum distance. We also provide new constructions of LCD MDS codes from generalized twisted Reed-Solomon codes.

Deep Autoencoding Topic Model with Scalable Hybrid Bayesian Inference

To build a flexible and interpretable model for document analysis, we develop deep autoencoding topic model (DATM) that uses a hierarchy of gamma distributions to construct its multi-stochastic-layer generative network. In order to provide scalable posterior inference for the parameters of the generative network, we develop topic-layer-adaptive stochastic gradient Riemannian MCMC that jointly learns simplex-constrained global parameters across all layers and topics, with topic and layer specific learning rates. Given a posterior sample of the global parameters, in order to efficiently infer the local latent representations of a document under DATM across all stochastic layers, we propose a Weibull upward-downward variational encoder that deterministically propagates information upward via a deep neural network, followed by a Weibull distribution based stochastic downward generative model. To jointly model documents and their associated labels, we further propose supervised DATM that enhances the discriminative power of its latent representations. The efficacy and scalability of our models are demonstrated on both unsupervised and supervised learning tasks on big corpora.

Radar Accurate Localization of UAV Swarms Based on Range Super-Resolution Method

In radar accurate localization of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms, the high density, similar motion parameters, small radar cross-section (RCS), strong noise and far range put forward high requirements on radar resolution and transmitting power. In this paper, by using advantages of the long-time integration (LTI) technique and gridless sparse method, we construct a super-resolution framework for radar accurate localization of UAV swarms without changing radar hardware and system parameters. Thereafter, based on this framework, a range super-resolution method is proposed to realize the radar accurate localization of UAV swarms. Mathematical analyses and numerical simulations are performed and demonstrate that, compared to the keystone transform (KT)-based LTI method, MUSIC-based method and reweighted atomic-norm minimization (RAM)-based method, the range super-resolution method is more robust and practical for radar accurate localization of UAV swarms under the noisy environment. Additionally, the real experiment with X-band radar is also conducted to verify the effectiveness of the range super-resolution method.

New subspace minimization conjugate gradient methods based on regularization model for unconstrained optimization

In this paper, two new subspace minimization conjugate gradient methods based on $p - $regularization models are proposed, where a special scaled norm in $p - $regularization model is analyzed. Different choices for special scaled norm lead to different solutions to the $p - $regularized subproblem. Based on the analyses of the solutions in a two-dimensional subspace, we derive new directions satisfying the sufficient descent condition. With a modified nonmonotone line search, we establish the global convergence of the proposed methods under mild assumptions. $R - $linear convergence of the proposed methods are also analyzed. Numerical results show that, for the CUTEr library, the proposed methods are superior to four conjugate gradient methods, which were proposed by Hager and Zhang (SIAM J Optim 16(1):170-192, 2005), Dai and Kou (SIAM J Optim 23(1):296-320, 2013), Liu and Liu (J Optim Theory Appl 180(3):879-906, 2019) and Li et al. (Comput Appl Math 38(1): 2019), respectively.

The Medium Energy (ME) X-ray telescope onboard the Insight-HXMT astronomy satellite

The Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME) is one of the three main telescopes on board the Insight Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) astronomy satellite. ME contains 1728 pixels of Si-PIN detectors sensitive in 5-30 keV with a total geometrical area of 952 cm2. Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) chips, VA32TA6, is used to achieve low power consumption and low readout noise. The collimators define three kinds of field of views (FOVs) for the telescope, 1°{\times}4°, 4°{\times}4°, and blocked ones. Combination of such FOVs can be used to estimate the in-orbit X-ray and particle background components. The energy resolution of ME is ~3 keV at 17.8 keV (FWHM) and the time resolution is 255 μs. In this paper, we introduce the design and performance of ME.

New MDS Self-dual Codes over Finite Fields of Odd Characteristic

In this paper, we produce new classes of MDS self-dual codes via (extended) generalized Reed-Solomon codes over finite fields of odd characteristic. Among our constructions, there are many MDS self-dual codes with new parameters which have never been reported. For odd prime power $q$ with $q$ square, the total number of lengths for MDS self-dual codes over $\mathbb{F}_q$ presented in this paper is much more than those in all the previous results.

An Improved Gradient Method with Approximately Optimal Stepsize Based on Conic model for Unconstrained Optimization

A new type of stepsize, which was recently introduced by Liu and Liu (Optimization, 67(3), 427-440, 2018), is called approximately optimal stepsize and is quit efficient for gradient method. Interestingly, all gradient methods can be regarded as gradient methods with approximately optimal stepsizes. In this paper, based on the work (Numer. Algorithms 78(1), 21-39, 2018), we present an improved gradient method with approximately optimal stepsize based on conic model for unconstrained optimization. If the objective function $ f $ is not close to a quadratic on the line segment between the current and latest iterates, we construct a conic model to generate approximately optimal stepsize for gradient method if the conic model can be used; otherwise, we construct some quadratic models to generate approximately optimal stepsizes for gradient method. The convergence of the proposed method is analyzed under suitable conditions. Numerical comparisons with some well-known conjugate gradient software packages such as CG$ \_ $DESCENT (SIAM J. Optim. 16(1), 170-192, 2005) and CGOPT (SIAM J. Optim. 23(1), 296-320, 2013) indicate the proposed method is very promising.

Insight-HXMT observations of Swift J0243.6+6124 during its 2017-2018 outburst

The recently discovered neutron star transient Swift J0243.6+6124 has been monitored by {\it the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope} ({\it Insight-\rm HXMT). Based on the obtained data, we investigate the broadband spectrum of the source throughout the outburst. We estimate the broadband flux of the source and search for possible cyclotron line in the broadband spectrum. No evidence of line-like features is, however, found up to $\rm 150~keV$. In the absence of any cyclotron line in its energy spectrum, we estimate the magnetic field of the source based on the observed spin evolution of the neutron star by applying two accretion torque models. In both cases, we get consistent results with $B\rm \sim 10^{13}~G$, $D\rm \sim 6~kpc$ and peak luminosity of $\rm >10^{39}~erg~s^{-1}$ which makes the source the first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray source hosting a neutron star.

Reducing the Upfront Cost of Private Clouds with Clairvoyant Virtual Machine Placement

Although public clouds still occupy the largest portion of the total cloud infrastructure, private clouds are attracting increasing interest from both industry and academia because of their better security and privacy control. According to the existing studies, the high upfront cost is among the most critical challenges associated with private clouds. To reduce cost and improve performance, virtual machine placement (VMP) methods have been extensively investigated, however, few of these methods have focused on private clouds. This paper proposes a heterogeneous and multidimensional clairvoyant dynamic bin packing (CDBP) model, in which the scheduler can conduct more efficient VMP processes using additional information on the arrival time and duration of virtual machines to reduce the datacenter scale and thereby decrease the upfront cost of private clouds. In addition, a novel branch-and-bound algorithm with a divide-and-conquer strategy (DCBB) is proposed to effectively and efficiently handle the derived problem. One state-of-the-art and several classic VMP methods are also modified to adapt to the proposed model to observe their performance and compare with our proposed algorithm. Extensive experiments are conducted on both real-world and synthetic workloads to evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of the algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that DCBB delivers near-optimal solutions with a convergence rate that is much faster than those of the other search-based algorithms evaluated. In particular, DCBB yields the optimal solution for a real-world workload with an execution time that is an order of magnitude shorter than that required by the original branch-and-bound (BB) algorithm.

Reference-Frame-Independent Quantum Key Distribution Using Fewer States

Reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution (RFI QKD) protocol can reduce the requirement on the alignment of reference frames in practical systems. However, comparing with the Bennett-Brassard (BB84) QKD protocol, the main drawback of RFI QKD is that Alice needs to prepare six encoding states in the three mutually unbiased bases (X, Y, and Z), and Bob also needs to measures the quantum state with such three bases. Here, we show that the RFI QKD protocol can be secured in the case where Alice sends fewer states. In particular, we find that transmitting three states (two eigenstates of the Z basis and one of the eigenstates in the X basis) is sufficient to obtain the comparable secret key rates and the covered distances, even when the security against coherent attacks with statistical fluctuations of finite-key size is considered. Finally, a proof-of-principle experiment based on time-bin encoding is demonstrated to show the feasibility of our scheme, and its merit to simplify the experimental setup.

Galois Hulls of Linear Codes over Finite Fields

The $\ell$-Galois hull $h_{\ell}(C)$ of an $[n,k]$ linear code $C$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is the intersection of $C$ and $C^{{\bot}_{\ell}}$, where $C^{\bot_{\ell}}$ denotes the $\ell$-Galois dual of $C$ which introduced by Fan and Zhang (2017). The $\ell$- Galois LCD code is a linear code $C$ with $h_{\ell}(C) = 0$. In this paper, we show that the dimension of the $\ell$-Galois hull of a linear code is invariant under permutation equivalence and we provide a method to calculate the dimension of the $\ell$-Galois hull by the generator matrix of the code. Moreover, we obtain that the dimension of the $\ell$-Galois hulls of ternary codes are also invariant under monomial equivalence. %The dimension of $l$-Galois hull of a code is not invariant under monomial equivalence if $q>4$. We show that every $[n,k]$ linear code over $\mathbb F_{q}$ is monomial equivalent to an $\ell$-Galois LCD code for any $q>4$. We conclude that if there exists an $[n,k]$ linear code over $\mathbb F_{q}$ for any $q>4$, then there exists an $\ell$-Galois LCD code with the same parameters for any $0\le \ell\le e-1$, where $q=p^e$ for some prime $p$. As an application, we characterize the $\ell$-Galois hull of matrix product codes over finite fields.

$σ$-self-orthogonal constacyclic codes of length $p^s$ over $\mathbb F_{p^m}+u\mathbb F_{p^m}$

In this paper, we study the $σ$-self-orthogonality of constacyclic codes of length $p^s$ over the finite commutative chain ring $\mathbb F_{p^m} + u \mathbb F_{p^m}$, where $u^2=0$ and $σ$ is a ring automorphism of $\mathbb F_{p^m} + u \mathbb F_{p^m}$. First, we obtain the structure of $σ$-dual code of a $λ$-constacyclic code of length $p^s$ over $\mathbb F_{p^m} + u \mathbb F_{p^m}$. Then, the necessary and sufficient conditions for a $λ$-constacyclic code to be $σ$-self-orthogonal are provided. In particular, we determine the $σ$-self-dual constacyclic codes of length $p^s$ over $\mathbb F_{p^m} + u \mathbb F_{p^m}$. Finally, we extend the results to constacyclic codes of length $2 p^s$.

Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution based on polarization multiplexing

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) is proved to be able to eliminate all potential detector side channel attacks. Combining with the reference frame independent (RFI) scheme, the complexity of practical system can be reduced because of the unnecessary alignment for reference frame. Here, based on polarization multiplexing, we propose a time-bin encoding structure, and experimentally demonstrate the RFI-MDI-QKD protocol. Thanks to this, two of the four Bell states can be distinguished, whereas only one is used to generate the secure key in previous RFI-MDI-QKD experiments. As far as we know, this is the first demonstration for RFI-MDI-QKD protocol with clock rate of 50 MHz and distance of more than hundred kilometers between legitimate parties Alice and Bob. In asymptotic case, we experimentally compare RFI-MDI-QKD protocol with the original MDI-QKD protocol at the transmission distance of 160 km, when the different misalignments of the reference frame are deployed. By considering observables and statistical fluctuations jointly, four-intensity decoy-state RFI-MDI-QKD protocol with biased bases is experimentally achieved at the transmission distance of 100km and 120km. The results show the robustness of our scheme, and the key rate of RFI-MDI-QKD can be improved obviously under a large misalignment of the reference frame.

Optimal Estimation of Sensor Biases for Asynchronous Multi-Sensor Data Fusion

An important step in a multi-sensor surveillance system is to estimate sensor biases from their noisy asynchronous measurements. This estimation problem is computationally challenging due to the highly nonlinear transformation between the global and local coordinate systems as well as the measurement asynchrony from different sensors. In this paper, we propose a novel nonlinear least squares (LS) formulation for the problem by assuming the existence of a reference target moving with an (unknown) constant velocity. We also propose an efficient block coordinate decent (BCD) optimization algorithm, with a judicious initialization, to solve the problem. The proposed BCD algorithm alternately updates the range and azimuth bias estimates by solving linear least squares problems and semidefinite programs (SDPs). In the absence of measurement noise, the proposed algorithm is guaranteed to find the global solution of the problem and the true biases. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms the existing approaches in terms of the root mean square error (RMSE).

Two-Weight and a Few Weights Trace Codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}+u\mathbb{F}_{q}$

Let $p$ be a prime number, $q=p^s$ for a positive integer $s$. For any positive divisor $e$ of $q-1$, we construct an infinite family codes of size $q^{2m}$ with few Lee-weight. These codes are defined as trace codes over the ring $R=\mathbb{F}_q + u\mathbb{F}_q$, $u^2 = 0$. Using Gauss sums, their Lee weight distributions are provided. When $\gcd(e,m)=1$, we obtain an infinite family of two-weight codes over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ which meet the Griesmer bound. Moreover, when $\gcd(e,m)=2, 3$ or $4$ we construct new infinite family codes with at most five-weight.

Some Repeated-Root Constacyclic Codes over Galois Rings

Codes over Galois rings have been studied extensively during the last three decades. Negacyclic codes over $GR(2^a,m)$ of length $2^s$ have been characterized: the ring $\mathcal{R}_2(a,m,-1)= \frac{GR(2^a,m)[x]}{\langle x^{2^s}+1\rangle}$ is a chain ring. Furthermore, these results have been generalized to $λ$-constacyclic codes for any unit $λ$ of the form $4z-1$, $z\in GR(2^a, m)$. In this paper, we study more general cases and investigate all cases where $\mathcal{R}_p(a,m,γ)= \frac{GR(p^a,m)[x]}{\langle x^{p^s}-γ\rangle}$ is a chain ring. In particular, necessary and sufficient conditions for the ring $\mathcal{R}_p(a,m,γ)$ to be a chain ring are obtained. In addition, by using this structure we investigate all $γ$-constacyclic codes over $GR(p^a,m)$ when $\mathcal{R}_p(a,m,γ)$ is a chain ring. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of self-orthogonal and self-dual $γ$-constacyclic codes are also provided. Among others, for any prime $p$, the structure of $\mathcal{R}_p(a,m,γ)=\frac{GR(p^a,m)[x]}{\langle x^{p^s}-γ\rangle}$ is used to establish the Hamming and homogeneous distances of $γ$-constacyclic codes.
