Search for Light Dark Matter-Electron Scatterings in the PandaX-II Experiment

We report constraints on light dark matter through its interactions with shell electrons in the PandaX-II liquid xenon detector with a total 46.9 tonne$\cdot$day exposure. To effectively search for these very low energy electron recoils, ionization-only signals are selected from the data. 1821 candidates are identified within ionization signal range between 50 to 75 photoelectrons, corresponding to a mean electronic recoil energy from 0.08 to 0.15 keV. The 90% C.L. exclusion limit on the scattering cross section between the dark matter and electron is calculated based on Poisson statistics. Under the assumption of point interaction, we provide the world's most stringent limit within the dark matter mass range from 15 to 30 $\rm MeV/c^2$, with the corresponding cross section from $2.5\times10^{-37}$ to $3.1\times10^{-38}$ cm$^2$.

Determination of responses of liquid xenon to low energy electron and nuclear recoils using the PandaX-II detector

We report a systematic determination of the responses of PandaX-II, a dual phase xenon time projection chamber detector, to low energy recoils. The electron recoil (ER) and nuclear recoil (NR) responses are calibrated, respectively, with injected tritiated methane or $^{220}$Rn source, and with $^{241}$Am-Be neutron source, within an energy range from $1-25$ keV (ER) and $4-80$ keV (NR), under the two drift fields of 400 and 317 V/cm. An empirical model is used to fit the light yield and charge yield for both types of recoils. The best fit models can well describe the calibration data. The systematic uncertainties of the fitted models are obtained via statistical comparison against the data.

The action of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the torus on the Kauffman bracket skein module of the 3-twist knot complement

We determine the action of the Kauffman bracket skein algebra of the torus on the Kauffman bracket skein module of the complement of the 3-twist knot. The point is to study the relationship between knot complements and their boundary tori, an idea that has proved very fruitful in knot theory. We place this idea in the context of Chern-Simons theory, where such actions arose in connection with the computation of the noncommutative version of the A-polynomial that was defined by Frohman, Gelca and Lofaro, but they can also be interpreted as quantum mechanical systems. Our goal is to exhibit a detailed example in a part of Chern-Simons theory where examples are scarce.

Internal Calibration of the PandaX-II Detector with Radon Gaseous Sources

We have developed a low-energy electron recoil (ER) calibration method with $^{220}$Rn for the PandaX-II detector. $^{220}$Rn, emanated from natural thorium compounds, was fed into the detector through the xenon purification system. From 2017 to 2019, we performed three dedicated calibration campaigns with different radon sources. We studied the detector response to $α$, $β$, and $γ$ particles with focus on low energy ER events. During the runs in 2017 and 2018, the amount of radioactivity of $^{222}$Rn were on the order of 1\% of that of $^{220}$Rn and thorium particulate contamination was negligible, especially in 2018. We also measured the background contribution from $^{214}$Pb for the first time in PandaX-II with the help from a $^{222}$Rn injection. Calibration strategy with $^{220}$Rn and $^{222}$Rn will be implemented in the upcoming PandaX-4T experiment and can be useful for other xenon-based detectors as well.

Results of Dark Matter Search using the Full PandaX-II Exposure

We report the dark matter search results obtained using the full 132 ton$\cdot$day exposure of the PandaX-II experiment, including all data from March 2016 to August 2018. No significant excess of events is identified above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions. The lowest 90% confidence level exclusion on the spin-independent cross section is $2.2\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ at a WIMP mass of 30 GeV/$c^2$.

Outlier-robust Kalman Filter in the Presence of Correlated Measurements

We consider the robust filtering problem for a state-space model with outliers in correlated measurements. We propose a new robust filtering framework to further improve the robustness of conventional robust filters. Specifically, the measurement fitting error is processed separately during the reweighting procedure, which differs from existing solutions where a jointly processed scheme is involved. Simulation results reveal that, under the same setup, the proposed method outperforms the existing robust filter when the outlier-contaminated measurements are correlated, while it has the same performance as the existing one in the presence of uncorrelated measurements since these two types of robust filters are equivalent under such a circumstance.

Distance Encoding: Design Provably More Powerful Neural Networks for Graph Representation Learning

Learning representations of sets of nodes in a graph is crucial for applications ranging from node-role discovery to link prediction and molecule classification. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved great success in graph representation learning. However, expressive power of GNNs is limited by the 1-Weisfeiler-Lehman (WL) test and thus GNNs generate identical representations for graph substructures that may in fact be very different. More powerful GNNs, proposed recently by mimicking higher-order-WL tests, only focus on representing entire graphs and they are computationally inefficient as they cannot utilize sparsity of the underlying graph. Here we propose and mathematically analyze a general class of structure-related features, termed Distance Encoding (DE). DE assists GNNs in representing any set of nodes, while providing strictly more expressive power than the 1-WL test. DE captures the distance between the node set whose representation is to be learned and each node in the graph. To capture the distance DE can apply various graph-distance measures such as shortest path distance or generalized PageRank scores. We propose two ways for GNNs to use DEs (1) as extra node features, and (2) as controllers of message aggregation in GNNs. Both approaches can utilize the sparse structure of the underlying graph, which leads to computational efficiency and scalability. We also prove that DE can distinguish node sets embedded in almost all regular graphs where traditional GNNs always fail. We evaluate DE on three tasks over six real networks: structural role prediction, link prediction, and triangle prediction. Results show that our models outperform GNNs without DE by up-to 15\% in accuracy and AUROC. Furthermore, our models also significantly outperform other state-of-the-art methods especially designed for the above tasks.

MAT: Motion-Aware Multi-Object Tracking

Modern multi-object tracking (MOT) systems usually model the trajectories by associating per-frame detections. However, when camera motion, fast motion, and occlusion challenges occur, it is difficult to ensure long-range tracking or even the tracklet purity, especially for small objects. Although re-identification is often employed, due to noisy partial-detections, similar appearance, and lack of temporal-spatial constraints, it is not only unreliable and time-consuming, but still cannot address the false negatives for occluded and blurred objects. In this paper, we propose an enhanced MOT paradigm, namely Motion-Aware Tracker (MAT), focusing more on various motion patterns of different objects. The rigid camera motion and nonrigid pedestrian motion are blended compatibly to form the integrated motion localization module. Meanwhile, we introduce the dynamic reconnection context module, which aims to balance the robustness of long-range motion-based reconnection, and includes the cyclic pseudo-observation updating strategy to smoothly fill in the tracking fragments caused by occlusion or blur. Additionally, the 3D integral image module is presented to efficiently cut useless track-detection association connections with temporal-spatial constraints. Extensive experiments on MOT16 and MOT17 challenging benchmarks demonstrate that our MAT approach can achieve the superior performance by a large margin with high efficiency, in contrast to other state-of-the-art trackers.

Hyperbolicity in 2D transition metal ditellurides induced by electronic bands nesting

Naturally occurring hyperbolic plasmonic media is rare, and was only recently observed in the 1T$'$ phase of WTe$_2$. We elucidate on the physical origin of this strong infrared hyperbolic response, and attribute it to band-nested anisotropic interband transitions. Such phenomenon does not occur in general anisotropic materials, at least not in their pristine state. However, band-nested anisotropic interband transitions can in principle be induced via proper electronic band nesting. We illustrate this principle and demonstrate a topological elliptic-to-hyperbolic transition in MoTe$_2$ via strain engineering, which is otherwise non-hyperbolic.

Outlier-robust Kalman filters with mixture correntropy

We consider the robust filtering problem for a nonlinear state-space model with outliers in measurements. To improve the robustness of the traditional Kalman filtering algorithm, we propose in this work two robust filters based on mixture correntropy, especially the double-Gaussian mixture correntropy and Laplace-Gaussian mixture correntropy. We have formulated the robust filtering problem by adopting the mixture correntropy induced cost to replace the quadratic one in the conventional Kalman filter for measurement fitting errors. In addition, a tradeoff weight coefficient is introduced to make sure the proposed approaches can provide reasonable state estimates in scenarios where measurement fitting errors are small. The formulated robust filtering problems are iteratively solved by utilizing the cubature Kalman filtering framework with a reweighted measurement covariance. Numerical results show that the proposed methods can achieve a performance improvement over existing robust solutions.

Refinements in Motion and Appearance for Online Multi-Object Tracking

Modern multi-object tracking (MOT) system usually involves separated modules, such as motion model for location and appearance model for data association. However, the compatible problems within both motion and appearance models are always ignored. In this paper, a general architecture named as MIF is presented by seamlessly blending the Motion integration, three-dimensional(3D) Integral image and adaptive appearance feature Fusion. Since the uncertain pedestrian and camera motions are usually handled separately, the integrated motion model is designed using our defined intension of camera motion. Specifically, a 3D integral image based spatial blocking method is presented to efficiently cut useless connections between trajectories and candidates with spatial constraints. Then the appearance model and visibility prediction are jointly built. Considering scale, pose and visibility, the appearance features are adaptively fused to overcome the feature misalignment problem. Our MIF based tracker (MIFT) achieves the state-of-the-art accuracy with 60.1 MOTA on both MOT16&17 challenges.

Unifying Graph Convolutional Neural Networks and Label Propagation

Label Propagation (LPA) and Graph Convolutional Neural Networks (GCN) are both message passing algorithms on graphs. Both solve the task of node classification but LPA propagates node label information across the edges of the graph, while GCN propagates and transforms node feature information. However, while conceptually similar, theoretical relation between LPA and GCN has not yet been investigated. Here we study the relationship between LPA and GCN in terms of two aspects: (1) feature/label smoothing where we analyze how the feature/label of one node is spread over its neighbors; And, (2) feature/label influence of how much the initial feature/label of one node influences the final feature/label of another node. Based on our theoretical analysis, we propose an end-to-end model that unifies GCN and LPA for node classification. In our unified model, edge weights are learnable, and the LPA serves as regularization to assist the GCN in learning proper edge weights that lead to improved classification performance. Our model can also be seen as learning attention weights based on node labels, which is more task-oriented than existing feature-based attention models. In a number of experiments on real-world graphs, our model shows superiority over state-of-the-art GCN-based methods in terms of node classification accuracy.

Multi-mode conversion via two-dimensional refractive-index perturbation on a silicon waveguide

Mode-division multiplexing offers a promising solution to increase the data capacity for optical communications. Waveguide mode conversion is essential for on-chip mode-division multiplexing. Previously reported mode converters have been limited to the conversion from a fundamental mode to one particular high-order mode. It is challenging to simultaneously satisfy the phase matching conditions during multiple mode conversion processes. Here, we propose a scalable design method that overcomes this limitation and realizes the simultaneous conversion of multiple modes via an all-dielectric two-dimensional metastructure on a silicon waveguide by shallow etching with hexagonal patterns. As an example, we experimentally demonstrate a multi-mode converter that simultaneously converts the TEi modes to the TEi+3 (i = 0, 1, 2) modes. The length of the multi-mode converter is 16.2 micron. The TE0-TE3, TE1-TE4, and TE2-TE5 mode conversions exhibit low insertion losses (0.4 to 1.0 dB) and reasonable crosstalk values (-14.1 to -16.5 dB) at 1538 nm.

An Improved Evaluation of the Neutron Background in the PandaX-II Experiment

In dark matter direct detection experiments, neutron is a serious source of background, which can mimic the dark matter-nucleus scattering signals. In this paper, we present an improved evaluation of the neutron background in the PandaX-II dark matter experiment by a novel approach. Instead of fully relying on the Monte Carlo simulation, the overall neutron background is determined from the neutron-induced high energy signals in the data. In addition, the probability of producing a dark-matter-like background per neutron is evaluated with a complete Monte Carlo generator, where the correlated emission of neutron(s) and $γ$(s) in the ($α$, n) reactions and spontaneous fissions is taken into consideration. With this method, the neutron backgrounds in the Run 9 (26-ton-day) and Run 10 (28-ton-day) data sets of PandaX-II are estimated to be 0.66$\pm$0.24 and 0.47$\pm$0.25 events, respectively.

Agent-based opinion formation modeling in social network: a perspective of social psychology

Most previous works on opinion modeling lack the simultaneous study of individual mental activity and group behavior. This paper is motivated to propose an agent-based online opinion formation model based on attitude change theory, group behavior theory and evolutionary game theory in the perspective of sociology and psychology. In this model, there are three factors influencing the persuasion process, including credibility of the leaders, characteristic of the recipient, and group environment. The proposed model is applied to Twitter to analyze the influence of topic type, parameter changing, and opinion leaders on opinion formation. Experimental results show that the opinion evolution of controversial topic shows greater uncertainty and sustainability. The ratio of benefit to cost has a significant impact on opinion formation and a moderate ratio will result in the longest relaxation time or most unified global opinions. Furthermore, celebrities with a large number of followers are more capable of influencing public opinion than experts. This paper enriches the researches on opinion formation modeling, and the results provide managerial insights for business on public relations and market prediction.

Ultra-Compact Coupling Structures for Heterogeneously Integrated Silicon Lasers

Due to the inherent in-direct bandgap nature of Silicon, heterogeneous integration of semiconductor lasers on Silicon on Insulator (SOI) is crucial for next-generation on-chip optical interconnects. Compact, high-efficient and high-tolerant couplers between III-V light source and silicon chips have been the challenge for photonic integrated circuit (PIC). Here, we redesign the taper adiabatic coupler with the total coupling length of only 4 μm, and propose another two novel slot coupler and bridge-SWG coupler with both coupling length of 7 μm, to heterogeneously integrate III-V lasers and silicon chips. We study theoretically the optical mode coupling process through the redesigned taper coupler, the final coupling results match well with the simulation in 3D-FDTD. The three compact couplers represent fundamental TE mode coupling efficiencies all over 90%, even 95.7% for bridge-SWG coupler, to the best of our knowledge, are also the shortest coupling structures (7 um). Moreover, these coupling structures also possess excellent fabrication tolerance.

Searching for Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay of $^{136}$Xe with PandaX-II Liquid Xenon Detector

We report the Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) search results from PandaX-II dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber. The total live time used in this analysis is 403.1 days from June 2016 to August 2018. With NLDBD-optimized event selection criteria, we obtain a fiducial mass of 219 kg of natural xenon. The accumulated xenon exposure is 242 kg$\cdot$yr, or equivalently 22.2 kg$\cdot$yr of $^{136}$Xe exposure. At the region around $^{136}$Xe decay Q-value of 2458 keV, the energy resolution of PandaX-II is 4.2%. We find no evidence of NLDBD in PandaX-II and establish a lower limit for decay half-life of 2.4 $ \times 10^{23} $ yr at the 90% confidence level, which corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ββ} < (1.3 - 3.5)$ eV. This is the first NLDBD result reported from a dual-phase xenon experiment.

AdaShift: Decorrelation and Convergence of Adaptive Learning Rate Methods

Adam is shown not being able to converge to the optimal solution in certain cases. Researchers recently propose several algorithms to avoid the issue of non-convergence of Adam, but their efficiency turns out to be unsatisfactory in practice. In this paper, we provide new insight into the non-convergence issue of Adam as well as other adaptive learning rate methods. We argue that there exists an inappropriate correlation between gradient $g_t$ and the second-moment term $v_t$ in Adam ($t$ is the timestep), which results in that a large gradient is likely to have small step size while a small gradient may have a large step size. We demonstrate that such biased step sizes are the fundamental cause of non-convergence of Adam, and we further prove that decorrelating $v_t$ and $g_t$ will lead to unbiased step size for each gradient, thus solving the non-convergence problem of Adam. Finally, we propose AdaShift, a novel adaptive learning rate method that decorrelates $v_t$ and $g_t$ by temporal shifting, i.e., using temporally shifted gradient $g_{t-n}$ to calculate $v_t$. The experiment results demonstrate that AdaShift is able to address the non-convergence issue of Adam, while still maintaining a competitive performance with Adam in terms of both training speed and generalization.
