Interaction-induced interference for two independent Bose-Einstein condensates

After removing the double-well potential trapping two initially independent Bose condensates, the density expectation value is calculated when both the exchange symmetry of identical bosons and interatomic interaction are considered. The density expectation value and evolution equations are obtained based on both the first-quantization and second-quantization methods. When the interatomic interaction is considered carefully, after the overlapping of two initially independent condensates, it is shown that there is a nonzero interference term in the density expectation value. It is found that the calculated density expectation value with this model agrees with the interference pattern observed in the experiment by Andrews (Science 275, 637 (1997)). The nonzero interference term in the density expectation value physically arises from the exchange symmetry of identical bosons and interatomic interaction which make two initially independent condensates become coherent after the overlapping. For two initially independent condensates, our researches show that there is an interaction-induced coherence process.

Josephson effect and quantum merging of two Bose superfluids

We consider the Josephson effect when two independent Bose superfluids are weakly connected. In the presence of interparticle interaction and based on the calculations of the one-particle density matrix of the whole system, we find that the one-particle density matrix can be factorized which satisfies the general criterion of Bose superfluid proposed by Penrose and Onsager. By introducing an effective order parameter for the whole system, our researches show that there is Josephson effect for two independent Bose superfluids.

Interference of Bose-Einstein condensates and entangled single-atom state in a spin-dependent optical lattice

We present a theoretical model to investigate the interference of an array of Bose-Einstein condensates loaded in a one-dimensional spin-dependent optical lattice, which is based on an assumption that for the atoms in the entangled single-atom state between the internal and the external degrees of freedom each atom interferes only with itself. Our theoretical results agree well with the interference patterns observed in a recent experiment by Mandel et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 010407 (2003)]. In addition, an experimental suggestion of nonuniform phase distribution is proposed to test further our theoretical model and prediction. The present work shows that the entanglement of a single atom is sufficient for the interference of the condensates confined in a spin-dependent optical lattice and this interference is irrelevant with the phases of individual condensates, i.e., this interference arises only between each condensate and itself and there is no interference effect between two arbitrary different condensates.

Ultracold two-component Fermi gases with a magnetic field gradient near a Feshbach resonance

We study theoretically the ultracold two-component Fermi gases when a gradient magnetic field is used to tune the scattering length between atoms. For Li6 at the narrow resonance B0=543.25G, it is shown that the gases would be in a coexistence of the regimes of BCS, BEC and unitarity limit with the present experimental technique. In the case of thermal and chemical equilibrium, we investigate the density distribution of the gases and show that a double peak of the density distribution can give us a clear evidence for the coexistence of BCS, BEC and unitarity limit.

Interference effects between two initially independent Bose-condensed gases

When two initially independent Bose-condensed gases are allowed to overlap, we investigate the density expectation value of the whole system by using the second quantization method. In the presence of interatomic interaction, based on the exact expression of the density expectation value, it is found that there is a nonzero interference term in the density expectation value of the whole system. The evolution of the density expectation value is shown for different coupling constants. The present work shows clearly that there is an interaction-induced coherence process between two initially independent condensates.

Thermodynamic properties and phase transition of strongly interacting two-component Fermi gases

The thermodynamic properties of two-component Fermi gases with divergent scattering length is investigated and the transition temperature for the emergence of a stable dimeric gas is obtained by a simple theoretical model where the unique property of the dimers (i.e. fermionic atom pairs) with divergent scattering length is considered. Below the transition temperature, through the investigation of the overall entropy for the mixture gas of fermionic atoms and dimers, we calculate the relation between the energy and temperature of the system. In the limit of zero temperature, based on the chemical equilibrium condition, the fraction of the dimers is investigated and the role of the dimers in the collective excitations of the system is also discussed. It is found that our theoretical results agree with the condensate fraction, collective excitations, transition temperature and heat capacity investigated by the recent experiments about the strongly interacting two-component Fermi gases.

Dimers of ultracold two-component Fermi gases on magnetic-field Feshbach resonance

At the location of a magnetic-field Feshbach resonance, a mixture gas of fermionic atoms and dimers of fermionic atom pairs is investigated in the unitarity limit where the absolute value of the scattering length is much larger than the mean distance between atoms. The dynamic equilibrium of the mixture gases is characterized by the minimum of the Gibbs free energy. For the fermionic atoms and dimers with divergent scattering length, it is found that the fraction of the dimers based on a very simple theory agrees with the high fraction of zero-momentum molecules observed in a recent experiment (M. W. Zwierlein et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 120403 (2004)). The dimeric gas can be also used to interpret the frequency of the radial breathing mode observed in the experiment by J. Kinast et al (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 150402 (2004)).

Condensate fraction of molecules for a spin mixture of ultracold fermionic atoms

The condensate fraction of molecules for ultracold Fermi gases is investigated for the magnetic field below the Feshbach resonant magnetic field. Assuming that there is no loss of particles and energy during the adiabatic magnetic-field sweep, a simple theory is used to interpret the measured condensate fraction in the experiments by JILA group (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 040403 (2004)) and MIT group (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 120403 (2004)). Our theory shows that the condensate fraction of molecules is dependent on the initial condition of the system and especially on the process of the magnetic-field sweep.

Anomalous particle-number fluctuations in a three-dimensional interacting Bose-Einstein condensate

The particle-number fluctuations originated from collective excitations are investigated for a three-dimensional, repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a harmonic trap. The contribution due to the quantum depletion of the condensate is calculated and the explicit expression of the coefficient in the formulas denoting the particle-number fluctuations is given. The results show that the particle-number fluctuations of the condensate follow the law $<δN_0^2> \sim N^{22/15}$ and the fluctuations vanish when temperature approaches to the BEC critical temperature.

Phase diffusion of Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional optical lattice

We investigate the phase diffusion of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in the combined potential of a magnetic trap and a one-dimensional optical lattice. We show that the phase diffusion of the condensate in the whole optical lattice is evident and can be measured from the interference pattern of expanding subcondensates after the optical lattice is switched off. The maximum density of the interference pattern decreases significantly due to the mixing of the phase diffusion appearing in different subcondensates. This suggests a way to detect experimentally the notable phase diffusion of BECs.

Interference pattern of Bose-condensed gas in a 2D optical lattice

For the Bose-condensed gas confined in a magnetic trap and in a two-dimensional optical lattice, the non-uniform distribution of atoms in different lattice sites is considered based on Gross-Pitaevskii equation. A propagator method is used to investigate the time evolution of 2D interference patterns after (i)only the optical lattice is swithed off, and (ii)both the optical lattice and the magnetic trap are swithed off. An analytical description on the motion of side peaks in the interference patterns is presented by using the density distribution in a momentum space.

Anomalous fluctuations of two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the particle-number fluctuations due to the collective excitations created in a two-dimensional (2D) and a quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) at low temperature. We find that the fluctuations display an anomalous behavior, i. e. for the 2D BEC they are proportional to $N^2$, where $N$ is the total number of particles. For the quasi-2D BEC, the particle-number fluctuations are proportional not only to $N^2$ but also to the square root of the trapping frequency in the strongly-confined direction.

Evolution of a coherent array of Bose-Einstein Condensates in a magnetic trap

We investigate the evolution process of the interference pattern for a coherent array of Bose-Einstein condensates in a magnetic trap after the optical lattices are switched off. It is shown that there is a decay and revival of the density oscillation for the condensates confined in the magnetic trap. We find that, due to the confinement of the magnetic trap, the interference effect is much stronger than that of the experiment induced by Pedri et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett, {\bf 87}, 220401), where the magnetic trap is switched off too. The interaction correction to the interference effect is also discussed for the density distribution of the central peak.

Wave function of string and membrane and spacetime geometry

A first-quantized string (and membrane) theory is developed here by using a general wave function of the string (and membrane), analogously to the first-quantized quantum theory of a point particle. From the general wave function of the string (and membrane), the properties of the string (and membrane) such as its relation to Bosons, Fermions and spacetime are investigated. The string and membrane wave functions are found to be very useful and we can deduce Klein-Gordon equation, Dirac equation and the fundamental property of the spacetime from this new starting point.

Phase diffusion of Bose-Einstein Condensation close to zero temperature

The correlation function of the quantum fluctuations due to collective excitations is calculated and used to investigate the phase diffusion of a Bose-Einstein condensate close to zero temperature. It is shown that the phase diffusion time of the condensate is much longer than the result obtained by assuming that the correlation time of the quantum fluctuations is infinity.
