Doppler-induced continuous spectral broadening of ultraviolet lasers

We propose a compact scheme based on ultrafast-rotating phase plates (URPPs) to achieve continuous spectral broadening of ultraviolet lasers. The rapid rotation elements behave as a random oscillator which induces Doppler frequency shift into the ultraviolet lasers. As an example, for a disk-shaped phase plate, with the beam acting on the edge at a radius of 10 cm, a rotation frequency of 1 kHz, and a phase-element size of 10 nm, the continuous spectral broadening reaches 0.07%. Further increasing the rotation speed or reducing the phase-element can lead to greater spectral broadening. When multiple URPPs are arranged in series, the superimposed spatiotemporal modulation further enhances the continuous spectral broadening and achieves more effective speckle smoothing. The scheme is applicable to broadening the independent spectrum of optical frequency combs as well as to the mitigation of laser-plasma instabilities in inertial fusion energy.

Effects of laser-plasma parameters on sub-nanosecond evolution of cross-beam energy transfer

Cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) between two lasers is investigated through theoretical analysis and two-dimensional hybrid simulations over sub-nanosecond to nanosecond timescales and millimeter spatial scales. A finite frequency-difference range for CBET development is derived. Ion acoustic wave (IAW) damping is found to broaden this range while reducing the growth rate of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). CBET exhibits distinct nonlinear behaviors across different laser-intensity regimes. Denoting $I_{14}=1\times 10^{14} \mathrm{W/cm^2}$ for a laser wavelength of $351 \mathrm{nm}$, at moderate intensities ($1<I/I_{14}<8$), CBET grows weakly and saturates at a low level due to pump depletion. In the strongly coupled SBS regime ($I/I_{14} \gtrsim 8$), harmonic IAW and nonlinear wave-particle interactions emerge. The generation of harmonic IAW reduces the normal IAW mode, while ion-trapping-induced spectral broadening of normal IAW mode causes frequency mismatch, leading to nonlinear reduction of CBET. After the saturation of harmonic mode, ion trapping broadens harmonic IAW spectrum and weakens it, triggering a secondary growth stage of CBET. After approximately $60 \mathrm{ps}$, CBET approaches quasi-steady-state. The maximum total energy transfer occurs at a frequency difference below the linear matching condition due to the trapping-induced IAW redshift. Based on these two intensity regimes, piecewise scalings of the quasi-saturated total energy transfer rate with $I/I_{14}$ are obtained and shown to be robust against spot size. Speckle effects reduce high-intensity overlap and thus the energy transfer rate. The effects of plasma temperature, density, and flow velocity on CBET are also examined.

Control of laser-plasma instabilities by non-collinear polychromatic light

Normal broadband lasers with collinear polychromatic components have immense potential for mitigating laser plasma instabilities (LPIs). However, the projection complexity of collinear polychromatic light (CPL) is a significant challenge owing to the demand for a large bandwidth and beamlet number. Here, we propose a theoretical LPI model and optical design for non-collinear polychromatic light (NCPL), which has a small angle $\sim4^\circ$ and large frequency difference $\sim$1\% between the double-color beamlets. LPI models of the NCPL demonstrate a decoupling threshold for the shared daughter waves under a multibeam configuration. Compared with the CPL, the wavevector couplings are further reduced by the introduced angle. Therefore, both the growth rate and saturation level of LPIs are greatly reduced by using the NCPL. The two- and three-dimensional simulation results indicate that the NCPL reduces the absolute and convective decoupling thresholds of the CPL and is sufficient to effectively mitigate the reflectivity, hot-electron generation, and intensity of cross-beam energy transfer. An optical design for the efficient generation of ultraviolet NCPL has been presented based on the unsaturated optical parametric amplification and non-collinear sum-frequency generation.

Non-line-of-sight polarized single-scatter propagation model for noncoplanar geometries

The classical model of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) single-scatter propagation for coplanar geometries was recently extended to include noncoplanar geometries; the calculation processes in the extended model are partly based on the Cartesian coordinate system and are somewhat complicated. A new NLOS single-scatter propagation model for noncoplanar geometries is presented based only on the prolate spheroidal coordinate system, which can be considered as the simplified version of the extended model mentioned above. Similar to the polarization-extension of the Monte-Carlo-based multiple-scatter model, the new single-scatter model for noncoplanar geometries is also extended to take polarization into account; the polarized single-scatter model is validated by the Monte-Carlo-based polarized model, results show perfect match. The theoretical feasibility of a 2-polarization UV communication link is validated based on the polarized single-scatter model.
