Constructions of block MDS LDPC codes from punctured circulant matrices

Low density parity check (LDPC) codes, initially discovered by Gallager, exhibit excellent performance in iterative decoding, approaching the Shannon limit. MDS array codes, with favorable algebraic structures, are codes suitable for decoding large burst errors. The Blaum-Roth (BR) code, an MDS array code similar to the Reed-Solomon (RS) code but has a parity-check matrix prone to $4$-cycles. Fossorier proposed constructing quasi-cyclic LDPC codes from circulant permutation matrices but are not MDS array codes. This paper aims to construct codes that possess both the block MDS property and have no $4$-cycles in the Tanner graph of their parity-check matrices, namely the so-called block MDS LDPC codes. Non-binary block MDS QC codes were first constructed by [Tauz {\it et al. }IEEE ITW, 2025] using circulant shift matrices. We first generate a family of block MDS codes over $\F_2$ from punctured circulant permutation matrices. Second, we construct a family of block MDS LDPC codes from circulant matrices with column weight $> 1$ (CM$(t)$). Additionally, we present the Moore determinant formula for CM$(t)$s and a sufficient condition to avoid $4$-cycles in CM\((t)\)-QC LDPC codes' Tanner graphs for $t> 1$. We also point out the non-existence of binary block MDS CPM-QC LDPC codes. Compared to the codes constructed in [Li {\it et al. }IEEE TIT, 2023] and [Xiao {\it et al. }IEEE TCOM, 2021], our block MDS LDPC codes show enhanced random-error-correction at a similar code length and rate. Meanwhile, these codes can effectively combat burst errors when considered as array codes. Both of our two types of constructions for block MDS LDPC codes are applicable to the scenario of the binary field.

A universal scaling law for active diffusion in complex media

Using granular experiments and computer simulations, we investigate the long-time diffusion of active tracers in a broad class of complex media composed of frozen obstacles of diverse structures. By introducing a dimensionless persistence length $Q = v_d \tau_r / d_t$, we propose a modified scaling relation that independently collapses experimental and simulation results across active and passive particles, diverse media, and distinct propulsion mechanisms. Our results reveal a universal active diffusion-structure relation that holds across both equilibrium and nonequilibrium regimes, providing a simple predictive framework for active diffusion in complex environments.

Some bounds on the cardinality of the $b$-symbol weight spectrum of codes

The size of the Hamming distance spectrum of a code has received great attention in recent research. The main objective of this paper is to extend these significant theories to the $b$-symbol distance spectrum. We examine this question for various types of codes, including unrestricted codes, additive codes, linear codes, and cyclic codes, successively. For the first three cases, we determine the maximum size of the $b$-symbol distance spectra of these codes smoothly. For the case of cyclic codes, we introduce three approaches to characterize the upper bound for the cardinality of the $b$-symbol weight spectrum of cyclic codes, namely the period distribution approach, the primitive idempotent approach, and the $b$-symbol weight formula approach. As two by-products of this paper, the maximum number of symplectic weights of linear codes is determined, and a basic inequality among the parameters $[n,k,d_H(\C)]_q$ of cyclic codes is provided.

Moirai: Towards Optimal Placement for Distributed Inference on Heterogeneous Devices

The escalating size of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) has spurred a growing research interest in hosting and serving DNN models across multiple devices. A number of studies have been reported to partition a DNN model across devices, providing device placement solutions. The methods appeared in the literature, however, either suffer from poor placement performance due to the exponential search space or miss an optimal placement as a consequence of the reduced search space with limited heuristics. Moreover, these methods have ignored the runtime inter-operator optimization of a computation graph when coarsening the graph, which degrades the end-to-end inference performance. This paper presents Moirai that better exploits runtime inter-operator fusion in a model to render a coarsened computation graph, reducing the search space while maintaining the inter-operator optimization provided by inference backends. Moirai also generalizes the device placement algorithm from multiple perspectives by considering inference constraints and device heterogeneity.Extensive experimental evaluation with 11 large DNNs demonstrates that Moirai outperforms the state-of-the-art counterparts, i.e., Placeto, m-SCT, and GETF, up to 4.28$\times$ in reduction of the end-to-end inference latency. Cyclic codes from low differentially uniform functions

Cyclic codes have many applications in consumer electronics, communication and data storage systems due to their efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. An efficient approach to constructing cyclic codes is the sequence approach. In their articles [Discrete Math. 321, 2014] and [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 27(4), 2013], Ding and Zhou constructed several classes of cyclic codes from almost perfect nonlinear (APN) functions and planar functions over finite fields and presented some open problems on cyclic codes from highly nonlinear functions. This article focuses on these exciting works by investigating new insights in this research direction. Specifically, its objective is twofold. The first is to provide a complement with some former results and present correct proofs and statements on some known ones on the cyclic codes from the APN functions. The second is studying the cyclic codes from some known functions processing low differential uniformity. Along with this article, we shall provide answers to some open problems presented in the literature. The first one concerns Open Problem 1, proposed by Ding and Zhou in Discrete Math. 321, 2014. The two others are Open Problems 5.16 and 5.25, raised by Ding in [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 27(4), 2013].

The b-symbol weight distribution of irreducible cyclic codes and related consequences

The $b$-symbol read channel is motivated by the limitations of the reading process in high density data storage systems. The corresponding new metric is a generalization of the Hamming metric known as the $b$-symbol weight metric and has become an important object in coding theory. In this paper, the general $b$-symbol weight enumerator formula for irreducible cyclic codes is presented by using the Gaussian period and a new invariant $\#U(b,j,N_1)$. The related $b$-symbol weight hierarchies $\{d_1(\C),d_2(\C),\ldots,d_K(\C)\}$ ($K=\dim(\C)$) are given for some cases. The shortened codes which are optimal from some classes of irreducible cyclic codes are given, where the shorten set $\mathcal{T}$ is the complementary set of $b$-symbol support of some codeword with the minimal $b$-symbol weight.

Dual-CLVSA: a Novel Deep Learning Approach to Predict Financial Markets with Sentiment Measurements

It is a challenging task to predict financial markets. The complexity of this task is mainly due to the interaction between financial markets and market participants, who are not able to keep rational all the time, and often affected by emotions such as fear and ecstasy. Based on the state-of-the-art approach particularly for financial market predictions, a hybrid convolutional LSTM Based variational sequence-to-sequence model with attention (CLVSA), we propose a novel deep learning approach, named dual-CLVSA, to predict financial market movement with both trading data and the corresponding social sentiment measurements, each through a separate sequence-to-sequence channel. We evaluate the performance of our approach with backtesting on historical trading data of SPDR SP 500 Trust ETF over eight years. The experiment results show that dual-CLVSA can effectively fuse the two types of data, and verify that sentiment measurements are not only informative for financial market predictions, but they also contain extra profitable features to boost the performance of our predicting system.

The b-symbol weight hierarchy of the Kasami codes

The symbol-pair read channel was first proposed by Cassuto and Blaum. Later, Yaakobi et al. generalized it to the $b$-symbol read channel. It is motivated by the limitations of the reading process in high density data storage systems. One main task in $b$-symbol coding theory is to determine the $b$-symbol weight hierarchy of codes. In this paper, we study the $b$-symbol weight hierarchy of the Kasami codes, which are well known for their applications to construct sequences with optimal correlation magnitudes. The complete symbol-pair weight distribution of the Kasami codes is determined.

Complete b-symbol weight distribution of some irreducible cyclic codes

Recently, $b$-symbol codes are proposed to protect against $b$-symbol errors in $b$-symbol read channels. It is an interesting subject of study to consider the complete $b$-symbol weight distribution of cyclic codes since $b$-symbol metric is a generalization for Hamming metric. The complete $b$-symbol Hamming weight distribution of irreducible codes is known in only a few cases. In this paper, we give a complete $b$-symbol Hamming weight distribution of a class of irreducible codes with two nonzero $b$-symbol Hamming weights.

The connections among Hamming metric, $b$-symbol metric, and $r$-th generalized Hamming metric

The $r$-th generalized Hamming metric and the $b$-symbol metric are two different generalizations of Hamming metric. The former is used on the wire-tap channel of Type II, and the latter is motivated by the limitations of the reading process in high-density data storage systems and applied to a read channel that outputs overlapping symbols. In this paper, we study the connections among the three metrics (that is, Hamming metric, $b$-symbol metric, and $r$-th generalized Hamming metric) mentioned above and give a conjecture about the $b$-symbol Griesmer Bound for cyclic codes. %Furthermore, we explore the combinatorial function of the size of the $b$-symbol weight set of a code $C$.

The $q$-ary antiprimitive BCH codes

It is well-known that cyclic codes have efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In recent years, antiprimitive BCH codes have attracted a lot of attention. The objective of this paper is to study BCH codes of this type over finite fields and analyse their parameters. Some lower bounds on the minimum distance of antiprimitive BCH codes are given. The BCH codes presented in this paper have good parameters in general, containing many optimal linear codes. In particular, two open problems about the minimum distance of BCH codes of this type are partially solved in this paper.

CLVSA: A Convolutional LSTM Based Variational Sequence-to-Sequence Model with Attention for Predicting Trends of Financial Markets

Financial markets are a complex dynamical system. The complexity comes from the interaction between a market and its participants, in other words, the integrated outcome of activities of the entire participants determines the markets trend, while the markets trend affects activities of participants. These interwoven interactions make financial markets keep evolving. Inspired by stochastic recurrent models that successfully capture variability observed in natural sequential data such as speech and video, we propose CLVSA, a hybrid model that consists of stochastic recurrent networks, the sequence-to-sequence architecture, the self- and inter-attention mechanism, and convolutional LSTM units to capture variationally underlying features in raw financial trading data. Our model outperforms basic models, such as convolutional neural network, vanilla LSTM network, and sequence-to-sequence model with attention, based on backtesting results of six futures from January 2010 to December 2017. Our experimental results show that, by introducing an approximate posterior, CLVSA takes advantage of an extra regularizer based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence to prevent itself from overfitting traps.

MixSearch: Searching for Domain Generalized Medical Image Segmentation Architectures

Considering the scarcity of medical data, most datasets in medical image analysis are an order of magnitude smaller than those of natural images. However, most Network Architecture Search (NAS) approaches in medical images focused on specific datasets and did not take into account the generalization ability of the learned architectures on unseen datasets as well as different domains. In this paper, we address this point by proposing to search for generalizable U-shape architectures on a composited dataset that mixes medical images from multiple segmentation tasks and domains creatively, which is named MixSearch. Specifically, we propose a novel approach to mix multiple small-scale datasets from multiple domains and segmentation tasks to produce a large-scale dataset. Then, a novel weaved encoder-decoder structure is designed to search for a generalized segmentation network in both cell-level and network-level. The network produced by the proposed MixSearch framework achieves state-of-the-art results compared with advanced encoder-decoder networks across various datasets.

Ultimate Photo-Thermo-Acoustic Efficiency of Graphene Aerogels

The ability to generate, amplify, mix, and modulate sound with no harmonic distortion in a passive opto-acoustic device would revolutionize the field of acoustics. The photo-thermo-acoustic (PTA) effect allows to transduce light into sound without any bulk electro-mechanically moving parts and electrical connections, as for conventional loudspeakers. Also, PTA devices can be integrated with standard silicon complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication techniques. Here, we demonstrate that the ultimate PTA efficiency of graphene aerogels, depending on their particular thermal and optical properties, can be experimentally achieved by reducing their mass density. Furthermore, we illustrate that the aerogels behave as an omnidirectional point-source throughout the audible range with no harmonic distortion. This research represents a breakthrough for audio-visual consumer technologies and it could pave the way to novel opto-acoustic sensing devices.

Dynamics of quasi-static collapse process of a binary granular column

The dynamical behavior of the column that made up binary granular beads is investigated systematically by tracking the displacement of particles in the collapse process. An experimental setup is first devised to control the quasi-static collapse of a granular column, and then observe the trajectories of tracer particles by using an industrial camera controlled by the image acquisition program. It is found that there exist two zones in column: a sliding region in which particles are moving in a layered structure; a static region within which particles are stationary. According to this analytical result, a dynamical model is developed to predict the trajectory evolution of particles in the space-time. The calculating result for the trajectories of particles on the selected layers is well consistent with the experimental observation.

Optimal three-weight cubic codes

In this paper, we construct an infinite family of three-weight binary codes from linear codes over the ring $R=\mathbb{F}_2+v\mathbb{F}_2+v^2\mathbb{F}_2$, where $v^3=1.$ These codes are defined as trace codes. They have the algebraic structure of abelian codes. Their Lee weight distributions are computed by employing character sums. The three-weight binary linear codes which we construct are shown to be optimal when $m$ is odd and $m>1$. They are cubic, that is to say quasi-cyclic of co-index three. An application to secret sharing schemes is given.

On self-dual and LCD double circulant and double negacirculant codes over $\mathbb{F}_q + u\mathbb{F}_q$

Double circulant codes of length $2n$ over the semilocal ring $R = \mathbb{F}_q + u\mathbb{F}_q,\, u^2=u,$ are studied when $q$ is an odd prime power, and $-1$ is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q.$ Double negacirculant codes of length $2n$ are studied over $R$ when $n$ is even and $q$ is an odd prime power. Exact enumeration of self-dual and LCD such codes for given length $2n$ is given. Employing a duality-preserving Gray map, self-dual and LCD codes of length $4n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ are constructed. Using random coding and the Artin conjecture, the relative distance of these codes is bounded below. The parameters of examples of the modest length are computed. Several such codes are optimal.

How many weights can a linear code have ?

We study the combinatorial function $L(k,q),$ the maximum number of nonzero weights a linear code of dimension $k$ over $\F_q$ can have. We determine it completely for $q=2,$ and for $k=2,$ and provide upper and lower bounds in the general case when both $k$ and $q$ are $\ge 3.$ A refinement $L(n,k,q),$ as well as nonlinear analogues $N(M,q)$ and $N(n,M,q),$ are also introduced and studied.
