On the Ergodic Capacity of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS)-Aided MIMO Channels

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a promising technique to enhance the system spectral efficiency. This paper investigates the ergodic channel capacity (ECC) of an RIS-aided multiple-input multiple-output channel under the assumption that the transmitter-RIS, RIS-receiver, and transmitter-receiver channels contain deterministic line-of-sight paths. Novel expressions are derived to characterize the upper and lower bounds of the ECC. To unveil more system insights, asymptotic analyses are performed to the system ECC in the limit of large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and number of reflecting elements (REs). Theoretical analyses suggest that the RIS's deployment can shape the ECC curve by influencing its high-SNR power offset and the ECC can get improved by increasing the number of REs.

Capacity Scaling Law in Massive MIMO with Antenna Selection

Antenna selection is capable of handling the cost and complexity issues in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. The sum-rate capacity of a multiuser massive MIMO uplink channel is characterized under the Nakagami fading. A mathematically tractable sum-rate capacity upper bound is derived for the considered system. Moreover, for a sufficiently large base station (BS) antenna number, a deterministic equivalent (DE) of the sum-rate bound is derived. Based on this DE, the sum-rate capacity is shown to grow double logarithmically with the number of BS antennas. The validity of the analytical result is confirmed by numerical experiments.

Integrated Sensing and Communications: A Mutual Information-Based Framework

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is potentially capable of circumventing the limitations of existing frequency-division sensing and communications (FDSAC) techniques. Hence, it has recently attracted significant attention. This article aims to propose a unified analytical framework for ISAC from a mutual information (MI) perspective. Based on the proposed framework, the sensing performance and the communication performance are evaluated by the sensing MI and the communication MI, respectively. The unity of this framework is originated from the fact that the sensing and communication (S\&C) performance metrics, i.e., the S\&C MI, have the similar physical and mathematical properties as well as the same unit of measurement. Based on this framework, the S\&C performance of downlink and uplink ISAC systems is investigated and compared with that of FDSAC systems. Along each considered system settings, numerical results are provided to demonstrate the superiority of ISAC over conventional FDSAC designs. Finally, promising open research directions are provided in the context of MI-based ISAC.

Lens Antenna Arrays-Assisted mmWave MU-MIMO Uplink Transmission: Joint Beam Selection and Phase-Only Beamforming Design

This paper considers a lens antenna array-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system. The base station's beam selection matrix and user terminals' phase-only beamformers are jointly designed with the aim of maximizing the uplink sum rate. In order to deal with the formulated mixed-integer optimization problem, a penalty dual decomposition (PDD)-based iterative algorithm is developed via capitalizing on the weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE), block coordinate descent (BCD), and minorization-maximization (MM) techniques. Moreover, a low-complexity sequential optimization (SO)-based algorithm is proposed at the cost of a slight sum rate performance loss. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed methods can achieve higher sum rates than state-of-the-art methods.

Some Discussions on PHY Security in DF Relay

Physical layer (PHY) security in decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems is discussed. Based on the types of wiretap links, the secrecy performance of three typical secure DF relay models is analyzed. Different from conventional works in this field, rigorous derivations of the secrecy channel capacity are provided from an information-theoretic perspective. Meanwhile, closed-form expressions are derived to characterize the secrecy outage probability (SOP). For the sake of unveiling more system insights, asymptotic analyses are performed on the SOP for a sufficiently large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The analytical results are validated by computer simulations and are in excellent agreement.

Performance of Downlink and Uplink Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC) Systems

This letter analyzes the fundamental performance of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems. For downlink and uplink ISAC, the diversity orders are analyzed to evaluate the communication rate (CR) and the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) slopes are unveiled for the CR as well as the sensing rate (SR). Furthermore, the achievable downlink and uplink CR-SR regions are characterized. It is shown that ISAC can provide more degrees of freedom for both the CR and the SR than conventional frequency-division sensing and communications systems where isolated frequency bands are used for sensing and communications, respectively.

On the Performance of Uplink ISAC Systems

This letter analyzes the performance of uplink integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems where communication users (CUs) and radar targets (RTs) share the same frequency band. A non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) protocol is adopted in the communication procedure of the ISAC system. Novel expressions are derived to characterize the outage probability, ergodic communication rate, and sensing rate. Besides, the diversity order and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) slope are unveiled to gain further insights. It is found that when achieving the same communication rate, the ISAC system enjoys a higher sensing rate than the conventional frequency-division sensing and communications (FDSAC) system where CUs and RTs share isolated bands. All the results are validated by numerical simulations and are in excellent agreement.

This paper analyzes the performance of a multiuser integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, where nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is exploited to mitigate inter-user interference. Closed-form expressions are derived to evaluate the outage probability, ergodic communication rate, and sensing rate. Furthermore, asymptotic analyses are carried out to unveil diversity orders and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) slopes of the considered NOMA-ISAC system. As the further advance, the achievable sensing-communication rate region of ISAC is characterized. It is proved that ISAC system is capable of achieving a larger rate region than the conventional frequency-division sensing and communications (FDSAC) system.

A Concise Tutorial on Approximate Message Passing

High-dimensional signal recovery of standard linear regression is a key challenge in many engineering fields, such as, communications, compressed sensing, and image processing. The approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm proposed by Donoho \textit{et al} is a computational efficient method to such problems, which can attain Bayes-optimal performance in independent identical distributed (IID) sub-Gaussian random matrices region. A significant feature of AMP is that the dynamical behavior of AMP can be fully predicted by a scalar equation termed station evolution (SE). Although AMP is optimal in IID sub-Gaussian random matrices, AMP may fail to converge when measurement matrix is beyond IID sub-Gaussian. To extend the region of random measurement matrix, an expectation propagation (EP)-related algorithm orthogonal AMP (OAMP) was proposed, which shares the same algorithm with EP, expectation consistent (EC), and vector AMP (VAMP). This paper aims at giving a review for those algorithms. We begin with the worst case, i.e., least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) inference problem, and then give the detailed derivation of AMP derived from message passing. Also, in the Bayes-optimal setting, we give the Bayes-optimal AMP which has a slight difference from AMP for LASSO. In addition, we review some AMP-related algorithms: OAMP, VAMP, and Memory AMP (MAMP), which can be applied to more general random matrices.

A Lightweight Dual-Domain Attention Framework for Sparse-View CT Reconstruction

Computed Tomography (CT) plays an essential role in clinical diagnosis. Due to the adverse effects of radiation on patients, the radiation dose is expected to be reduced as low as possible. Sparse sampling is an effective way, but it will lead to severe artifacts on the reconstructed CT image, thus sparse-view CT image reconstruction has been a prevailing and challenging research area. With the popularity of mobile devices, the requirements for lightweight and real-time networks are increasing rapidly. In this paper, we design a novel lightweight network called CAGAN, and propose a dual-domain reconstruction pipeline for parallel beam sparse-view CT. CAGAN is an adversarial auto-encoder, combining the Coordinate Attention unit, which preserves the spatial information of features. Also, the application of Shuffle Blocks reduces the parameters by a quarter without sacrificing its performance. In the Radon domain, the CAGAN learns the mapping between the interpolated data and fringe-free projection data. After the restored Radon data is reconstructed to an image, the image is sent into the second CAGAN trained for recovering the details, so that a high-quality image is obtained. Experiments indicate that the CAGAN strikes an excellent balance between model complexity and performance, and our pipeline outperforms the DD-Net and the DuDoNet.

MMSE Bound for MIMO Channel

Detailed derivations of two bounds of the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) of complex-valued multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are proposed for performance evaluation. Particularly, the lower bound is derived based on a genie-aided MMSE estimator, whereas the upper bound is derived based on a maximum-likelihood (ML) estimator. Using the famous relationship between the mutual information (MI) and MMSE, two bounds for the MI are also derived, based on which we discuss the asymptotic behaviours of the average MI in the high-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Theoretical analyses suggest that the average MI will converge its maximum as the SNR increases and the diversity order is the same as receive antenna number.

Asymptotic Average Mutual Information Over Finite Input Mixture Gamma Distributed Channels

This letter establishes a unified analytical framework to study the asymptotic average mutual information (AMI) of mixture gamma (MG) distributed fading channels driven by finite input signals in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. It is found that the AMI converges to some constant as the average SNR increases and its rate of convergence (ROC) is determined by the coding gain and diversity order. Moreover, the derived results are used to investigate the asymptotic optimal power allocation policy of a bank of parallel fading channels having finite inputs. It is suggested that in the high SNR region, the sub-channel with a lower coding gain or diversity order should be allocated with more power. Finally, numerical results are provided to collaborate the theoretical analyses.

Asynchronous Massive Access in Multi-cell Wireless Networks Using Reed-Muller Codes

Providing connectivity to a massive number of devices is a key challenge in 5G wireless systems. In particular, it is crucial to develop efficient methods for active device identification and message decoding in a multi-cell network with fading, path loss, and delay uncertainties. This paper presents such a scheme using second-order Reed-Muller (RM) sequences and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). For given positive integer $m$, a codebook is generated with up to $2^{m(m+3)/2}$ codewords of length $2^m$, where each codeword is a unique RM sequence determined by a matrix-vector pair with binary entries. This allows every device to send $m(m + 3)/2$ bits of information where an arbitrary number of these bits can be used to represent the identity of a node, and the remaining bits represent a message. There can be up to $2^{m(m+3)/2}$ different identities. Using an iterative algorithm, an access point can estimate the matrix-vector pairs of each nearby device, as long as not too many devices transmit in the same frame. It is shown that both the computational complexity and the error performance of the proposed algorithm exceed another state-of-the-art algorithm. The device identification and message decoding scheme developed in this work can serve as the basis for grant-free massive access for billions of devices with hundreds of simultaneously active devices in each cell.

Replica Analysis for Generalized Linear Regression with IID Row Prior

Different from a typical independent identically distributed (IID) element assumption, this paper studies the estimation of IID row random matrix for the generalized linear model constructed by a linear mixing space and a row-wise mapping channel. The objective inference problem arises in many engineering fields, such as wireless communications, compressed sensing, and phase retrieval. We apply the replica method from statistical mechanics to analyze the exact minimum mean square error (MMSE) under the Bayes-optimal setting, in which the explicit replica symmetric solution of the exact MMSE estimator is obtained. Meanwhile, the input-output mutual information relation between the objective model and the equivalent single-vector system is established. To estimate the signal, we also propose a computationally efficient message passing based algorithm on expectation propagation (EP) perspective and analyze its dynamics. We verify that the asymptotic MSE of proposed algorithm predicted by its state evolution (SE) matches perfectly the exact MMSE estimator predicted by the replica method. That indicates, the optimal MSE error can be attained by the proposed algorithm if it has a unique fixed point.

Multi-Layer Bilinear Generalized Approximate Message Passing

In this paper, we extend the bilinear generalized approximate message passing (BiG-AMP) approach, originally proposed for high-dimensional generalized bilinear regression, to the multi-layer case for the handling of cascaded problem such as matrix-factorization problem arising in relay communication among others. Assuming statistically independent matrix entries with known priors, the new algorithm called ML-BiGAMP could approximate the general sum-product loopy belief propagation (LBP) in the high-dimensional limit enjoying a substantial reduction in computational complexity. We demonstrate that, in large system limit, the asymptotic MSE performance of ML-BiGAMP could be fully characterized via a set of simple one-dimensional equations termed state evolution (SE). We establish that the asymptotic MSE predicted by ML-BiGAMP' SE matches perfectly the exact MMSE predicted by the replica method, which is well known to be Bayes-optimal but infeasible in practice. This consistency indicates that the ML-BiGAMP may still retain the same Bayes-optimal performance as the MMSE estimator in high-dimensional applications, although ML-BiGAMP's computational burden is far lower. As an illustrative example of the general ML-BiGAMP, we provide a detector design that could estimate the channel fading and the data symbols jointly with high precision for the two-hop amplify-and-forward relay communication systems.

Expectation-Maximization-Aided Hybrid Generalized Expectation Consistent for Sparse Signal Reconstruction

The reconstruction of sparse signal is an active area of research. Different from a typical i.i.d. assumption, this paper considers a non-independent prior of group structure. For this more practical setup, we propose EM-aided HyGEC, a new algorithm to address the stability issue and the hyper-parameter issue facing the other algorithms. The instability problem results from the ill condition of the transform matrix, while the unavailability of the hyper-parameters is a ground truth that their values are not known beforehand. The proposed algorithm is built on the paradigm of HyGAMP (proposed by Rangan et al.) but we replace its inner engine, the GAMP, by a matrix-insensitive alternative, the GEC, so that the first issue is solved. For the second issue, we take expectation-maximization as an outer loop, and together with the inner engine HyGEC, we learn the value of the hyper-parameters. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is also verified by means of numerical simulations.

Real-Time Limited-View CT Inpainting and Reconstruction with Dual Domain Based on Spatial Information

Low-dose Computed Tomography is a common issue in reality. Current reduction, sparse sampling and limited-view scanning can all cause it. Between them, limited-view CT is general in the industry due to inevitable mechanical and physical limitation. However, limited-view CT can cause serious imaging problem on account of its massive information loss. Thus, we should effectively utilize the scant prior information to perform completion. It is an undeniable fact that CT imaging slices are extremely dense, which leads to high continuity between successive images. We realized that fully exploit the spatial correlation between consecutive frames can significantly improve restoration results in video inpainting. Inspired by this, we propose a deep learning-based three-stage algorithm that hoist limited-view CT imaging quality based on spatial information. In stage one, to better utilize prior information in the Radon domain, we design an adversarial autoencoder to complement the Radon data. In the second stage, a model is built to perform inpainting based on spatial continuity in the image domain. At this point, we have roughly restored the imaging, while its texture still needs to be finely repaired. Hence, we propose a model to accurately restore the image in stage three, and finally achieve an ideal inpainting result. In addition, we adopt FBP instead of SART-TV to make our algorithm more suitable for real-time use. In the experiment, we restore and reconstruct the Radon data that has been cut the rear one-third part, they achieve PSNR of 40.209, SSIM of 0.943, while precisely present the texture.

A Lightweight Structure Aimed to Utilize Spatial Correlation for Sparse-View CT Reconstruction

Sparse-view computed tomography (CT) is known as a widely used approach to reduce radiation dose while accelerating imaging through lowered projection views and correlated calculations. However, its severe imaging noise and streaking artifacts turn out to be a major issue in the low dose protocol. In this paper, we propose a dual-domain deep learning-based method that breaks through the limitations of currently prevailing algorithms that merely process single image slices. Since the scanned object usually contains a high degree of spatial continuity, the obtained consecutive imaging slices embody rich information that is largely unexplored. Therefore, we establish a cascade model named LS-AAE which aims to tackle the above problem. In addition, in order to adapt to the social trend of lightweight medical care, our model adopts the inverted residual with linear bottleneck in the module design to make it mobile and lightweight (reduce model parameters to one-eighth of its original) without sacrificing its performance. In our experiments, sparse sampling is conducted at intervals of 4°, 8° and 16°, which appears to be a challenging sparsity that few scholars have attempted before. Nevertheless, our method still exhibits its robustness and achieves the state-of-the-art performance by reaching the PSNR of 40.305 and the SSIM of 0.948, while ensuring high model mobility. Particularly, it still exceeds other current methods when the sampling rate is one-fourth of them, thereby demonstrating its remarkable superiority.
