DMAF-Net: An Effective Modality Rebalancing Framework for Incomplete Multi-Modal Medical Image Segmentation

Incomplete multi-modal medical image segmentation faces critical challenges from modality imbalance, including imbalanced modality missing rates and heterogeneous modality contributions. Due to their reliance on idealized assumptions of complete modality availability, existing methods fail to dynamically balance contributions and neglect the structural relationships between modalities, resulting in suboptimal performance in real-world clinical scenarios. To address these limitations, we propose a novel model, named Dynamic Modality-Aware Fusion Network (DMAF-Net). The DMAF-Net adopts three key ideas. First, it introduces a Dynamic Modality-Aware Fusion (DMAF) module to suppress missing-modality interference by combining transformer attention with adaptive masking and weight modality contributions dynamically through attention maps. Second, it designs a synergistic Relation Distillation and Prototype Distillation framework to enforce global-local feature alignment via covariance consistency and masked graph attention, while ensuring semantic consistency through cross-modal class-specific prototype alignment. Third, it presents a Dynamic Training Monitoring (DTM) strategy to stabilize optimization under imbalanced missing rates by tracking distillation gaps in real-time, and to balance convergence speeds across modalities by adaptively reweighting losses and scaling gradients. Extensive experiments on BraTS2020 and MyoPS2020 demonstrate that DMAF-Net outperforms existing methods for incomplete multi-modal medical image segmentation. DSSAU-Net:U-Shaped Hybrid Network for Pubic Symphysis and Fetal Head Segmentation

In the childbirth process, traditional methods involve invasive vaginal examinations, but research has shown that these methods are both subjective and inaccurate. Ultrasound-assisted diagnosis offers an objective yet effective way to assess fetal head position via two key parameters: Angle of Progression (AoP) and Head-Symphysis Distance (HSD), calculated by segmenting the fetal head (FH) and pubic symphysis (PS), which aids clinicians in ensuring a smooth delivery process. Therefore, accurate segmentation of FH and PS is crucial. In this work, we propose a sparse self-attention network architecture with good performance and high computational efficiency, named DSSAU-Net, for the segmentation of FH and PS. Specifically, we stack varying numbers of Dual Sparse Selection Attention (DSSA) blocks at each stage to form a symmetric U-shaped encoder-decoder network architecture. For a given query, DSSA is designed to explicitly perform one sparse token selection at both the region and pixel levels, respectively, which is beneficial for further reducing computational complexity while extracting the most relevant features. To compensate for the information loss during the upsampling process, skip connections with convolutions are designed. Additionally, multiscale feature fusion is employed to enrich the model's global and local information. The performance of DSSAU-Net has been validated using the Intrapartum Ultrasound Grand Challenge (IUGC) 2024 \textit{test set} provided by the organizer in the MICCAI IUGC 2024 competition\footnote{\href{https://codalab.lisn.upsaclay.fr/competitions/18413\#learn\_the\_details}{https://codalab.lisn.upsaclay.fr/competitions/18413\#learn\_the\_details}}, where we win the fourth place on the tasks of classification and segmentation, demonstrating its effectiveness. The codes will be available at https://github.com/XiaZunhui/DSSAU-Net.

Structural distortion induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in monolayer CrI3 at van der Waals heterostructures

The van der Waals (vdW) magnetic heterostructures provide flexible ways to realize particular magnetic properties that possess both scientific and practical significance. Here, by firstprinciples calculation, we predict strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs) by constructing CrI3/Metal vdW heterostructures. The underlaying mechanisms are ascribed the large spin-orbital coupling (SOC) of the I atom and the structural distortion in CrI3 layer caused by interlayer interaction. This is different from the traditional way that deposit magnetic films on substrate to generate DMI, wherein DMI is dominated by interlayer hybridization and large SOC of substrates. In addition, both Heisenberg exchange and magnetic anisotropy are modulated dramatically, such as Heisenberg exchange is nearly doubled on Au(111), and the out-of-plane magnetism is enhanced by 88% on Ir(111). Our work may provide a experimentally accessible strategy to induce DMI in vdW magnetic materials, which will be helpful to the design of spintronics devices.

Large Intrinsic Valley Polarization and High Curie Temperature in Stable Two-dimensional Ferrovalley YX$_2$(X=I,Br and Cl)

Ferrovalley materials with spontaneous valley polarization are crucial to valleytronic application. Based on first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that two-dimensional (2D) YX$_2$(X= I, Br,and Cl) in 2H structure constitute a series of promising ferrovalley semiconductors with large spontaneous valley polarization and high Curie temperature. Our calculations reveal that YX$_2$ are dynamically and thermally stable 2D ferromagnetic semiconductors with a Curie temperature above 200 K. Due to the natural noncentrosymmetric structure, intrinsic ferromagnetic order and strong spin orbital coupling, the large spontaneous valley polarizations of 108.98, 57.70 and 22.35 meV are also predicted in single-layer YX$_2$(X = I, Br and Cl),respectively. The anomalous valley Hall effect is also proposed based on the valley contrasting Berry curvature. Moreover, the ferromagnetism and valley polarization are found to be effectively tuning by applying a biaxial strain. Interestingly, the suppressed valley physics of YBr$_2$ and YCl$_2$ can be switched on via applying a moderate compression strain. The present findings promise YX$_2$ as competitive candidates for the further experimental studies and practical applications in valleytronics.

Revealing the Underlying Mechanisms of Stacking Order and Interlayer Magnetism in Bilayer CrBr$_3$

Aiming to clarify the mechanisms governing the interlayer magnetic coupling, we have investigated the stacking energy and interlayer magnetism of bilayer CrBr$_3$ systemically. The magnetic ground states of bilayer CrBr$_3$ with different R-type and H-type stacking orders are established, which is found to be in good agreement with recent experiment (Science $\mathbf{366}$,983(2019)).Further analyses indicate that the stacking energy is mainly determined by the Coulomb interaction between the interlayer nearest-neighbor Br-Br atoms. While interlayer magnetism can be understood by a competition between super-super-exchange interactions involving $t_{2g}$-$t_{2g}$ and $t_{2g}$-$e_g$ orbitals and semi-covalent exchange interactions of $e_g$-$e_g$ orbitals. Our studies give an insightful understanding for stacking order and interlayer magnetism of bilayer CrBr$_3$, which should be useful to understand quantum confinement effect of other layered magnets in two-dimensional limit.

Engineering the ligand states by surface functionalization: A new way to enhance the ferromagnetism of CrI3

The newly discovered 2D magnetic materials provide new opportunities for basic physics and device applications. However, their low Curie temperature (TC) is a common weakness. In this paper, by combining magnetic Hamiltonian, Wannier functions and first-principle calculations, we systematically study the magnetic properties of monolayer CrI3 functionalized by halogen. The magnetic exchange coupling (EX) and magnetic anisotropy (MA) are found to increase significantly by X (X=F, Cl and Br) atom adsorption, and increase along with the coverage of X atom. In the frame work of superexchange theory, the enhanced EX can be ascribed to the reduced energy difference and increased hopping strength between Cr d and I p orbitals, due to the states of I ligand are engineered by X adatom. Besides, the X adatom may provide additional ferromagnetic superexchange channel. Finally, the CrI3 that one side is fully adsorbed by F atoms is found to be a room temperature ferromagnetic semiconductor with TC=650 K. Our results not only give an insightful understanding for the enhancement of ferromagnetism of CrI3 by atom adsorption, but also propose a promising way to improve the ferromagnetism of 2D magnetic materials.

Spin-dependent Schottky barriers and vacancy-induced spin-selective Ohmic contacts in magnetic vdW heterostructures

The 2D ferromagnets, such as CrX3 (X=Cl, Br and I), have been attracting extensive attentions since they provide novel platforms to fundamental physics and device applications. Integrating CrX3 with other electrodes and substrates is an essential step to their device realization. Therefore, it is important to understand the interfacial properties between CrX3 and other 2D materials. As an illustrative example, we have investigated the heterostructures between CrX3 and graphene (CrX3/Gr) from firstprinciples. We find unique Schottky contacts type with strongly spin-dependent barriers in CrX3/Gr. This can be understood by synergistic effects between the exchange splitting of semiconductor band of CrX3 and interlayer charge transfer. The spinasymmetry of Schottky barriers may result in different tunneling rates of spin-up and down electrons, and then lead to spin-polarized current, namely spin-filter (SF) effect. Moreover, by introducing X vacancy into CrX3/Gr, an Ohmic contact forms in spin-up direction. It may enhance the transport of spin-up electrons, and improve SF effect. Our systematic study reveals the unique interfacial properties of CrX3/Gr, and provides a theoretical view to the understanding and designing of spintronics device based on magnetic vdW heterostructures.

The Enhanced Ferromagnetism of Single-Layer CrX3 (X=Br and I) by Van der Waals Engineering

The recent experimental discovery of intrinsic ferromagnetism in single-layer CrI3 opens a new avenue to low-dimensional spintronics. However, the low Curie temperature Tc=45 K is still a large obstacle to its realistic device application. In this work, we demonstrate that the Tc and magnetic moment of CrX3(X=Br, I) can be enhanced simultaneously by coupling them to buckled two-dimensional Mene (M=Si, Ge) to form magnetic van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. Our first-principles calculations reveal that n-doping of CrX3, induced by a significant spin-dependent interlayer charge transfer from Mene, is responsible for its drastic enhancement of Tc and magnetic moment. Furthermore, the diversified electronic properties including halfmetallicity and semi-conductivity with configuration dependent energy gap are also predicted in this novel vdW heterostructure, implying their broad potential applications in spintronics. Our study suggests that the vdW engineering may be an efficient way to tune the magnetic properties of 2D magnets, and the Mene_CrX3 magnetic vdW heterostructures are wonderful candidates in spintronics and nanoelectronics device.

Trust Exploitation and Attention Competition: A Game Theoretical Model

The proliferation of Social Network Sites (SNSs) has greatly reformed the way of information dissemination, but also provided a new venue for hosts with impure motivations to disseminate malicious information. Social trust is the basis for information dissemination in SNSs. Malicious hosts judiciously and dynamically make the balance between maintaining its social trust and selfishly maximizing its malicious gain over a long time-span. Studying the optimal response strategies for each malicious host could assist to design the best system maneuver so as to achieve the targeted level of overall malicious activities. In this paper, we propose an interaction-based social trust model, and formulate the maximization of long-term malicious gains of multiple competing hosts as a non-cooperative differential game. Through rigorous analysis, optimal response strategies are identified and the best system maneuver mechanism is presented. Extensive numerical studies further verify the analytical results.

Optimal CSMA-based Wireless Communication with Worst-case Delay and Non-uniform Sizes

Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA) protocols have been shown to reach the full capacity region for data communication in wireless networks, with polynomial complexity. However, current literature achieves the throughput optimality with an exponential delay scaling with the network size, even in a simplified scenario for transmission jobs with uniform sizes. Although CSMA protocols with order-optimal average delay have been proposed for specific topologies, no existing work can provide worst-case delay guarantee for each job in general network settings, not to mention the case when the jobs have non-uniform lengths while the throughput optimality is still targeted. In this paper, we tackle on this issue by proposing a two-timescale CSMA-based data communication protocol with dynamic decisions on rate control, link scheduling, job transmission and dropping in polynomial complexity. Through rigorous analysis, we demonstrate that the proposed protocol can achieve a throughput utility arbitrarily close to its offline optima for jobs with non-uniform sizes and worst-case delay guarantees, with a tradeoff of longer maximum allowable delay.

Virtual Machine Trading in a Federation of Clouds: Individual Profit and Social Welfare Maximization

By sharing resources among different cloud providers, the paradigm of federated clouds exploits temporal availability of resources and geographical diversity of operational costs for efficient job service. While interoperability issues across different cloud platforms in a cloud federation have been extensively studied, fundamental questions on cloud economics remain: When and how should a cloud trade resources (e.g., virtual machines) with others, such that its net profit is maximized over the long run, while a close-to-optimal social welfare in the entire federation can also be guaranteed? To answer this question, a number of important, inter-related decisions, including job scheduling, server provisioning and resource pricing, should be dynamically and jointly made, while the long-term profit optimality is pursued. In this work, we design efficient algorithms for inter-cloud virtual machine (VM) trading and scheduling in a cloud federation. For VM transactions among clouds, we design a double-auction based mechanism that is strategyproof, individual rational, ex-post budget balanced, and efficient to execute over time. Closely combined with the auction mechanism is a dynamic VM trading and scheduling algorithm, which carefully decides the true valuations of VMs in the auction, optimally schedules stochastic job arrivals with different SLAs onto the VMs, and judiciously turns on and off servers based on the current electricity prices. Through rigorous analysis, we show that each individual cloud, by carrying out the dynamic algorithm in the online double auction, can achieve a time-averaged profit arbitrarily close to the offline optimum. Asymptotic optimality in social welfare is also achieved under homogeneous cloud settings. We carry out trace-driven simulations to examine the effectiveness of our algorithms and the achievable social welfare under heterogeneous cloud settings.
